I've never actually sat down inside this restaurant, but I get their food to go whenever I'm craving curry. The Ambleside location has a patio with a view that is probably nice in the summer. The awesome thing about Handi, is they actually know what hot is. I asked for hot, like "Indian hot", this one time, and I was actually sweating through my entire meal. If you like spicy food like I do, that is a good thing. Their naan is also delicious.
FYI:
Health benefits associated with spicy foods: they may lower the risk of cancer, they increase metabolic rate- which can help burn off fat, they improve digestion, and may lower high blood pressure! -

BEST Indian food I've had in all of Vancouver (at the West Van Location). I eat out at least 3 times a week and have tried most restaurants in West Van and Downtown ... this one's a winner.
Can't beat the food, the service is friendly (not fine dining but it works), and the setting is beautiful. -

This is my favorite Indian restaurant in all of Vancouver.. and i have been to India before so i can say this with some level of taste experience.
I have been going here for years and it's always great. I love the Palak Paneer, Daal, Veg Jalferzi, and the Malia Kafta. The appetizers are all great but you really don't need them because the curry is so filling. There naan is fresh and delicious.
The locations is fantastic, especially in the summer upstairs on the deck over looking Ambelside beach. -

This place really deserves 4.5 stars. When thinking about patios and good food, this was one of the first places that came up (from a friend's mouth, not mind).
Not having traditional Indian food in the two years I've lived here (excluding Vij's - FUSION), I was excited to check it out... and I do love indian food.. so what's been taking me so long??? probably all the other local and delicious establishments everyone tells me about!
Walking upstairs to a full patio, we were lucky to reserve one of the last tables on the deck.... Although not everyone got the same view, I was pretty blown away. Being able to look out into the burrard inlet and not having any traffic in the way or loud noises to disrupt the scenery, the location was already 5 stars.
The service was extremely courteous with every waitor and waitress offering to help. We ordered 4 dishes to share:
1. butter chicken (staple)
2. chicken in a white cashnew nut sauce
3. lamb, slightly spicy recommended by our waiter
4. lamb with spinach.
We were given cone-shaped crisps to dip in mind and tamarind (?) sauce... can't remember if the latter was correct. One was sweet and one was spicy, good combinations and definitely a good start to our night.
The main courses came out FAST!.. less than 10 minutes I think and everything was bubbling in their little pots, heated with a tea light at the bottom. With a plate of assorted naan, the four of us dug into to a fabulous meal. Everything tasted different and you could distinguish the different flavours for each dish... which was extremely important to me. I hate ordering two things that claim to be completely different but there is really nothing unique in taste. The food really lived up to my expectations.
The sauce was so delicious that we ordered two more orders of naan and ate to the point that we were all experiencing food coma.... wait 5 minutes if you will feel it!
I was extremely impressed with everything throughout the night... if it was not a hot day, I would probably not come back because the interior is nothing special. Get a surprise on the Handi patio - it's definitely worth it! -

I really enjoyed their patio on a nice sunny evening. Nice and spacious with lots of shade if that's what you like. The servers were all very polite and helpful in describing the different dishes and the food was also very good. Love the little cone papad they give you before your food, they're perfect for dipping. The prices were average for an Indian restaurant, but combined with the groupon they had, it was a great meal at a great price.

Indian food isn't my all time favorite but I like it enough.. so I took a friend here to pop his Indian dinner cherry with a little bit of reluctance. Indian food is pretty heavy so you don't want to go balls out.. but I was starved all day so we end up ordering lots of food. We were asking the waiter if we should get chicken or vegetable samosas as starters and he gave a long "NOOOOOOOOOOOO" response to the chicken. What's that about?? Why not chicken?? Must be pretty bad if the worker refuse to eat it themselves? Im scared! So on we go to main course.. butter chicken and eggplant in gravy.. jeebus was it heavy. Last time I ate here, I dont remember the sauce being this bad. WOOF. Eggplant dish was recommended but probably an opportunity for the waiter to upsell because it wasnt great. Basmati rice was undercooked and hard, Indian beer was just ok. Im glad I ordered the naan, you cant really go wrong with naan. I left feeling sluggish and not sexy.. weird to put it that way but Indian food is just not sexy. My stomach is still mad at me this morning, doing acrobatic moves and doing the splits like the godfather of soul himself... she also told me to sleep with one eye open..
The view from the patio seating is pretty sweet.. maybe I should pack my own dinner and eat on their patio next time I come..Listed in: Food with a View

Terrible service!! This is the one on Dunbar Street. I'm afraid they are busy only because there is nothing else in the neighbourhood. Excellent mango lasse, I'll say that much but the staff and owners didn't really seem to care about the customer too much. Please send your money at a restaurant with better customer service!

Our 'to go' butter chicken and chicken tikka masala was dessert-like, to die for, unbelievable. Beautiful, tender chicken in the richest, most delicious sauces that you could eat as soup! The curries have an amazing smokey taste to them, too. Naan bread is so fresh and soft...melts in your mouth!

The food here is good. We love the Dahl Handi. The ambience is standard, nothing special. The service is ok at the restaurant, but multiple times when we asked for our leftovers to be packed they didn't pack it all. Even the next time when I specifically requested that they pack everything, including the rice & bread, they left some out and only packed some of one of the leftover curry dishes. :(
