If you have a layover in Vancouver for a few hours and you want to taste Vancouver's infamous sushi (or something close to it) come here. Otherwise go to a better place outside of the airport!
Airline attendants eat here all the time and actually have their own separate seating area. If it wasn't for all my wait times betwen flights I probably would never come here.
They serve Japanese sushi, and Chinese dimsum (highly over-priced, but again, if you aren't leaving the airport you dont have a choice). I usually end up getting a bento box of some sort. One time I ordered the Shoyu ramen. I recommend you do not order it. It wasn't anything special.
Actually neither is the rest of the menu, but if you need to rest your feet and you dont feel like food court fare, this is the place.
I only gave this place 3 stars because I actually frequent this place a lot, but not because I want to, but because there aren't many sit down options in YVR. -

When you see more people eating those disgusting egg salad sandwiches from the adjacent Tim Hortons, it is a warning. Never knew a veggie rice bowl could be so bad. Think veggies microwaved too long. In a city known for Asian food, you'd think Vancouver could put on a better face for it's tourists. The city/province seems to put a lot of money into having a good looking airport with skytrain, but having to choose b/n Hanami's and egg salad sandwiches is not helping me want to stay around.

Hanami Asian Cuisine is located in the Vancouver International Airport. I had a connecting flight from Calgary to California, which I had to wait 2 hours in Vancouver for my next flight out.
After going through security, I was pretty hungry! I was looking to see where my gate was when I saw Hanami. I still had a hour and my gate very close so I decided to give it a try. I only ordered a container of sweet n' sour pork. The lady filled the styrofoam container, I paid and went to sit down.
When I first dug in, it was soggy. I found the sweet n' sour pork to be tasteless and majorly soaked in sauce. It seemed that she filled the container mostly with sauce instead of the meat AND it was a ridiculous ~$8 just for the one item.
All the other items looked as if they sat under the heat lamp for hours!
Yes this place is "convenient" but is definitley not worth your coin. -

This was the most disgusting Japanese food I have ever had. $12 for a bento box of bag salad (that i expected), soggy pork goyza, gristly pork teriyaki (i guess it was teriyaki) over rice, and a few hunks of cali roll.
Truly, I would go make myself throw up, if I knew how to make it happen. It's even grosser sitting in my stomach than it was eating it. YUK -

This is one of those weird entities of a restaurant that really only gets the business as it is the closest thing to the international departures/customs gate. Located right at YVR, this place serves Chinese and Japanese food. I would usually be against going to these combo style restaurants, but usually it is a guest who is leaving our beautiful city, that this is the choice venue.
They serve dim sum and sushi if you choose to have this combination of food, it is odd, but killing two birds with one stone is this style of place. The food is alright, and a better place to have food than the airport food court if you want a quieter seating arrangement.
The area is big, as it is needed for people with luggage planning to go onto their next destination. The service is pretty prompt, as the excuse of "I have to catch a flight" is pretty valid in this venue. If you are thinking of Asian, before you catch that next plane, and knowing that most airplane food is probably not going to be up to par with your palate, fill yourself here before you get into your tight seat for 5+ hours of flight! -

Located in the Vancouver airport. Not bad for an airport food place. It's like a little sushi and Panda Express place all-in-one. Near gate 84.
The orange chicken was too much like a sweet & sour chicken rather than orange sauce. But the beef with mushrooms wasn't bad. And they can do noodles well (while hot). A few different types - the beef chow fun was worth the wait for the new batch. And gyoza can be a side, which I can appreciate. -

There are two Hanamis at YVR. The only reason I know this is we were delayed at YVR for three hours on Monday night so we ended up eating at the one before security. I guess the one *in* the terminal is the one that has the random Chinese food as well? The one near the checkin area just has a standard Japanese menu and sushi boats.
We each had a faux-donburi: rice + teriyaki something + tempura something (no way am I risking airport sushi before a flight). My teriyaki beef was actually fairly decent, but the tempura was completely bland and unseasoned, and my boyfriend's chicken teriyaki was pretty gristly.
Eh, it's airport food. Keep your expectations low and it might work for you. -

Certainly not the best japanese or dim sum you will have, but if you're a captive audience and stuck in the airport it will certainly do. We have had the sushi and the bento boxes from here, and both are average for the real world - but above average for airport food. It's nice to be able to sit down and have a drink with your meal as well. A lot of the airport staff eat here. The quality and service are consistent, and if in the airport we would recommend it.

Good Chinese food!
I haven't tried the sushi or Japanese dishes, so I have no comment on that.
It's located in a perfect spot to have a last meal with an International passenger after they've checked in. It's literally JUST before Security.
We ordered some dim sum-type dishes to share, but what I remember most is the Chow Mein. It's the crispy kind of noodles! Yay! -

Although we absolutely loved the vast majority of food in Vancouver, the XX International Airport has yet to join in the foodie haven that is the rest of the city. Traveling internationally with the prospect of greater wait times, longer travel overall and/or the potential for delays, travelers of other airports have been known to receive a wide variety of yummy options. Not so at Vancouver airport: paucity of choices aside (alternatives literally included Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Burger King, and a dozen-seating bar offering ~2 types of sandwiches and unmemorable snacks), my co-traveler made the grave error of eating at Hanami Asian Cuisine, which should be rated a -1.
Greasy, tasteless food aside, this Asian café served mystery meat and managed to shock and gross out several random diners when a server accepted a mixed up order from a customer who had walked away--and dumped the contents into the main serving container. A few middle-aged ladies from separate traveling parties expressed their great dismay at shut-down worthy lapse in hygiene/cleanliness standards that went on in front of paying customers; one woman even asked for the manager's name, threatening to file a report to local food inspectors. Hearing this, I thanked my lucky stars for not ordering sushi.
Not privy to this conversation, a family at the next table complained at getting a tiny serving of dumplings (I got only 3 as well) and the unpleasantness of the meal-to-cost ratio overall. Though with a continued feeling of hunger and barely halfway into the meal, I finished my beverage and walked away in dismay. For a city with so much incredible Asian cuisine, Hanami ears negative stars in my book. As my quotable partner noted in response to my wistful thinking of eating at Starbucks instead: "I'd rather eat 3-day old [café] sandwiches than here again!" How true. Avoid this place at all cost!!! -

The quality of food is not too bad and the service is good. However, it really pisses me off when I order maki, sushi, or sashmi and they do not bring the pickled ginger with the order. Even though I got the Wasbi, I would still like to have the ginger with it.
I would have given this place an extra star, but I've decided to penalize places that try to trim down on condiments. -

I'm finding that airlport food is getting better these days, but sometimes you find a place stuck in the dark ages. Hanami looks like one of those mall food places, but it still doesn't live up to that billing. The Bento box I had consisted of Chicken Teriyaki that I couldn't tell if it was fried/grilled/microwaved, Gyoza that was fried yesterday, California roll that was... um... how do I put it... smooshy, rice swimming in teriyaki sauce, and a salad.
I know, I know. I bet you're saying, "What the (expletive) were you expecting (expletive)-bag?" Well honestly, not much. In retrospect I should have gone for the pre-made sandwiches at the bar. Or maybe the greasy fried fish 'n chips or salsbury steak and eggs at the "seafood" place. Oh (expletive) me... -

If you have 15 minutes to spare while you are at Vancouver airport, grab some take-out at Hanami. If you have 45 mins or so, then sit and relax a little bit! Their service is fast, their food is good and the prices are reasonable, especially if you order one of their lunch sets.
This restaurant is tucked away beside the International departures area but it's a nice little place. I usually get the chicken or beef teriyaki bento boxes because they come with a lot of food! I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes for take-out but if I have time I like sitting down to eat here. They Dynamite and California rolls are huge! The food comes quickly, but you never feel rushed.
Don't order the ramen - both times I've ordered it because I wanted something warm and comforting and have been disappointed. The noodles the mushy "instant" kind you can buy at T&T, and the toppings looked like they have been sitting in a fridge for hours and microwaved warm again.
On one occasion I was planning a hotel room get-together in Vancouver. I phoned ahead and my sushi party tray was ready for me when my flight landed! -

Usual airport asian comfort food. Gets the job done.

given the choice between this place, the deli-where-sandwiches-go-to-die, and the donut place, hanami is not that bad. the ma-po tofu is edible, and the best of the bunch. the veggie chow mein was passable until I encountered a hair. the egg rolls fried in rancid oil and stuffed with the minimum of cabbage were inedible.

The cashier lady was very rude, not friendly at all. She's a middle aged Chinese lady with flaring nostrils. I was really craving for some noodle soup and Hanami was the only Asian place at this airport. I tried ordering udon and she said only selling sushi right now because the kitchen is not open yet, while mean mugging. She didnt tell me what time it was going to open so I had to ask. She looked even more pissed off when I asked. She obviously did not want any business! Plus I dont think she's a morning person. But I was desperate so I waited until they opened and got my noodle soup. The food quality was mediocre, with small portions. And the fact that the service was bad made it worse.

Usually food in the airport is hit or miss. Mostly misses. But Hanami was quite delicious. I got a sushi tray (nigiri of salmon and yellowtail) and then a 2 course combo (tofu and curry chicken). It was just all so delicious! The tofu has a nice silky texture to it, and the curry chicken sauce was delicious. And yes, I ate it all. I was that hungry.

Not your typical Japanese Restaurant. Was there early and chose the Chinese menu. The prices were good and the quality and quantity was excellent. Ordered from the Dim Sum menu.
