Sunday morning, Sun-run... Couldn't make my way to Mary's... tsk tsk tsk...
For all of you who values technicality or practicality of food, rather than the soul of it, stay away from here. We do not need you anyways... I am not a big fan of wanna be attitude; gastro-pub, gourmet diner or we are fine dining quality, but we are a hole in the wall... They usually lack originality and character, looks fake, smells fake.. Much like high school girl with a Louis Vuitton hand bag on Granville strip...
Mary's diner is my favourite diner in town. Everything is what it is supposed to be; rock'n'roll is playing in the background, girl's and the boy's look like diner servers, one of the cooks has pink hair, margarine smell comes off my toast, the coffee is weak, portions are huge, milk shakes are the best in town, omelettes and scrambles are slightly over cooked, awesome burgers, dry turkey club, King's and Monroe's pictures all over the walls, bloody mary still on the menu (yes.....yessss....), cheap beer, gunky gravy, HP bottles on the table, worn down leather booths, over sized hot-dogs, coney fries that makes you reek of cumin for the rest of your day, the tiles, awkward couples, happy people... mostly... I had my best weekend mornings here, sitting in the back, left alone, afraid to take my shades off, still half cut, staring at my macbook, watching people and the world going by behind the large glass doors.
People love things for what they are, it will make you a happier person.

Stepping into Hamburger Mary's is like taking a step back into the 1950's in terms of both decor and good food.
It's not pretentious; it's just good grub, including several items that could be called "comfort food." I've eaten there several times, and never been disappointed.
Mainly, I just go there for the burgers. I've eaten their low-carb burger platter a couple of times and also sampled their "wild" burger. They rotate different types of "wild" game meat (that is, farmed game) sometimes serving ostrich, other times bison and occasionally some other types of meat.
The low carb burger is a burger patty without the bun and instead of the usual fries or salad options, you have a choice of veggies, cottage cheese, and a few other low carb (or probably, to be more accurate, "smart carb") menu choices.
Burgers are not all they offer.
A friend of mine recently sampled the blue plate special (yep, they still have'em, there), a combination of very tasty roast pork in a zesty barbecue sauce, mashed potatoes, a good mix of veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and red peppers) that were cooked just right - tender-crisp, not soggy and overcooked. You can always tell a good restaurant by how it cooks its veggies.
The Caesar salad I had with my wild burger was okay, but nothing to write home about.
Their milkshakes are the real deal. I had a small orange creamsicle shake - and I'm glad I chose the "small" one! It was very creamy, very tasty and very filling.
The diner is also licensed and offers drink specials each day.
The decor is pretty cool...old James Dean movie posters, street signs like "Marilyn Monroe Place" and "James Dean Drive" adorn the walls. Plus they have a real juke box.
The fact I've been back there on more than one occasion probably speaks volumes about the food and service you get there.Listed in: Restaurants Where I LOVE to…

Review from Quan H.
My friend brought me here after 1.5 hours of swimming. It was 11pm. Whatever calories I burned for doing those 50 laps was instantly nullified after 3 sips of the mint chocolate milkshake. I'm not a fan of milkshakes, cuz they remind me of melted ice cream, and I like mine frozen, thanks. But he insisted on me trying. There were 3 of us. I ordered the coney fries, one ordered the veggie burger, and the other ordered the patty something... looked like a burger with grilled sandwich bread.
When the food came, I was surprised at how big the portion of fries were. I just stared at the plate and the waitress must've noticed cuz she asked if something was wrong. "The portion is too big!" [Like I'll ever say that] But maybe that's how much $7 is worth. I couldn't think straight after swimming, ok?! The fries were really good, even at the late hour, and generous heaps of beef and shredded cheese. I had a bite of the veggie burger, and that bite told me that I wouldn't mind turning vegetarian :O Didn't get to try the other dish.
Ambiance. It was dark in there, so I couldn't get a good picture with my crappy no-flash phone. I did notice a jukebox; so awesome :D It's been a while since I've been to a diner. Lovin' the retro~
The food I had was ok. It wasn't a WOW/inspired experience, but I'd come back here to try the other stuff on the menu. Mayhaps if I ever feel like eating fries ever again... ;) -

I've been told that this is a West End staple. And I do like the old-school 50s diner vibe they have going on. And I did like their food. But we had the worst service.
It wasn't bad that the guy rang my credit card up for our entire check, even AFTER my friend paid for his part of the meal first. Whatever, fine, he's scatter brained.
It was that when he had brought our food earlier, he knocked over my full cup of water. On me. And you know what he said? "It's just water." Yeah, it's just water, but your clumsy ass just got my entire lap wet, and you can't even fake your sincerity in apologizing? He laughed.
Hey, how about I throw a glass of ice cold water in YOUR lap, then make you go outside in the cold while you're still wet and see how you feel. What if it had been coffee? Or someone in a really pissy mood that day? He's lucky all I did was glare and silently curse him.
Now, the food. My friend couldn't decide between the pulled pork and the Canucks burger, and I couldn't decide at all, so we ordered both and split it.
The burger was really dry. It comes with guacamole (painstakingly not authentic and not at all spicy, more like creamy, in fact) and Swiss cheese.
The pulled pork was pretty decent. Full of flavor. Half the sandwich was wet because you know, he spilled the water, but I sucked it up. It's a very messy sandwich. Also came with coleslaw in it, but the meat was too overpowering for me to even taste it.
The fries were meh. Not cold but neither hot nor warm. They were just there.
I'm willing to look past certain things at my experiences in restaurants -- to a point. Not this one. If I do happen to come here though, I'll be sure to ask for another waiter if it happens to be the same one. -

Okay, I don't know if they hired a different cook for breakfast time or what, but I recently went back here at 9am for breakfast and it was actually amazing.
Perfectly cooked hash-browns, not too greasy at all. I wanted pancakes with eggs which wasn't one of the set menu items, but the waitress hooked me up. I'm kind of tempted to go back for dinner now.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Open until 3am?? What. 5-stars right there.
On my second attempt at fulfilling my poutine craving at Belle Poutine-- and finding it closed (Nooooooooo), I went for second best: Cow Sandwich.
The decor in here is SO tacky it's good. If you don't know what I mean, you just don't get it man.
I ordered the first burger on the menu (usually the "classic" with the least frills) with fries, with beer. And I declare, it was good. The patty was big, and I recall telling my friend, "My, this burger is mighty good" or something to that effect. I was too full to have many fries but the few I had were good.
Service was nice :) Very welcoming, relaxed atmosphere... kind of like going to your cool aunt's.
Comfort food + Beer + Open at wee hours = LOVE. -

I came here new Years day with a bunch of friends with a pretty wicked hangover. I can tell you that nothing cures my hangover better then greasy food and a milkshake!
Staff was pretty friendly, I have to hand it to them as they were VERY busy at the time and were handling the crowed well considering.
Food was kind-of slow, but expected due to the amount of people. When I got it though, it was quite tasty. Milkshake was VERY good, one of the best milkshakes I've had to date.
Also, I LOVED their hash browns, very tasty! Not bland, overcooked or undercooked...they were perfect. -

I haven't been here in years even though I live in the area and walk by it daily. But yet again Melriches was packed!!! Ugh. This morning I was reminded why. Breakfast was ALL cold, eggs had shells in them, pataoes were stale yet tasty. I asked for my check plate not even half eaten sorry eating shells is not a pleasant feeling. She asked if it was ok I said eggs had shells and the whole breakfast was cold. She brought me a bill didn't even comp the coffee. Don't ask if you don't care. JUST DON'T ASK. The funny thing is I'm not picky. Just wanted some grub. Had she just given me the bill and not asked I wouldn't have bothered writing this. Don't waste your money!

Review from Eon C.
The nicest guy in the world (who happened to be the worst dressed) gave me perfect directions to a place where I could get a "scrumptious map", followed by a cold breakfast and terrible orange juice, possibly spoiled.
If it wasn't for the fact that the pretty cool manager at the time (the badly dressed guy I referred to earlier) was pretty damn entertaining with his mannerisms, we would have left without paying.
We didn't even bother looking for that map. Maybe the burgers are good, but the breakfast was terrible.
I don't know how the place is now, but my visit in 2004 was not worth a repeat trip. -
Review from Linzi M.
Well the service at Hamburger Mary's didn't exactly cupid its way into my heart. Hell to the no. I guess when you are eating on Davie you can expect to get bitchy, queenie wait staff. Except I've eaten on Davie and haven't had anyone roll their eyes when we are ordering, be rude, brusque and generally shirty.
Bitch, please. I am paying you to serve me and I did not order a side of snarky attitude. If you hate your job, that is not my problem. if you are understaffed, say so, do not roll your eyes at my friend when she is deciding. Fair enough, he refilled the coffee and the water several times but still, be nice.
And the food. Well it wasn't great. The pulled pork was bad. But I heard reports the chilli and the French onion soup were good. The milkshake was more like a melted icecream sundae.
I would only ever come back here if it was 2am and I was ravenous with hunger.
HOWEVER, the jukebox plays a host of 90s and early 00 classics. Awesome. -
Review from Robin M.
Strange things can happen at Hamburger Mary's at 2 in the morning. Entertaining to be sure, this joint is open 20 whole hours every single day (that's 365 a year, people). I don't know about the average person, but a very very late night (or early morning, depending) in a 50s (ish) style diner located smack dab in the middle of the gay village sounds like a pretty great time to me.
Some sad, some outrageous, some just looking for a late-night bite to eat, the characters you'll find hanging in the booths of Mary's in the wee hours of the morning are guaranteed for entertainment value. But the food? Meh, it's never been wow-worthy. I mean, it's okay; but just. The burger is fine, the fries are adequate... you know, underwhelming.
But, whatevah - it's all about the milkshake anyway. -
Review from Scott H.
I used to live in this area and loved it. Being back there, not so much. Nevertheless Hamburger Mary's remains a stalwart in the area and it hasn't changed which is a good thing.
For breakfast, HM has the best potato hashbrowns in the city. Crispy with a bit of rosemary, they're perfect. Eggs/Bacon/Toast for 699, that's pretty good.
For lunch, their chocolate shake and burgers rock. But the shake is 6.50. That's almost the same as a breakfast, which is ridiculous. It is a great shake (and large) but that cost is goofy.
I've always like HM and ate there often. I should likely give it a 4 as it's consistently good, with decent service, good location and great food, but the cost of that shake borders on madness. I'm crazy for shakes, but not that crazy. -
Review from Cody S.
We came here to have a late bite and a milkshake. I was happy all the way through.
The place is open almost all of the time. It is the perfect joint to have a burger and milkshake....you don't always have to remember the food. Remember that memories don't always have to involve the quality of the food but the quality of the service and friends you have around you. I am happy to say that Hamburger Mary's is a must on Davie and I hope that it remains that way.Listed in: Davie Street Hangouts

Vancouver, BC
I think Hamburger Mary should think about what it means to be a diner. I've been to many diners in Vancouver where non-breakfast/burger items on the menu were also good. This isn't the case with HM.
The only good things here are the milkshakes, burgers and breakfasts. The price of their milkshakes is unreasonably high given that some are flavoured with a simulated syrup (ie: the Baileys) -- you'd think for that price they would just dump a shot in.
I was there last week with my wife and because it was during the dinner hour we decided to try the "Specialties" on the menu. She ordered the Winnipeg Style Perogies and I ordered the Hot Turkey Sandwich.
The perogies where drenched in chili, not topped, drenched. I'm not sure if the cook was near the bottom of the pot and just wanted to get rid of that batch so a new one could be heated up or what. It seemed pointless to even have the sour cream on the side since the only thing you could taste was the chili.
My hot turkey sandwich was horrible. It's not hard to make good turkey gravy if you start with the right ingredients especially when there's already a freakin roasted turkey done in-house (allegedly). I'm pretty sure the gravy came out of a pouch. The turkey itself was dry and no amount of pouch gravy could bring it back. It was all placed on three...THREE slices of bread next to mash potatoes. I understand two, but three?! I've had better hot turkey sandwiches in questionable dives in the middle of Nowhere, USA. There's no excuse for this kind of quality in the middle of Vancouver.
As for the service, we had to ask for cutlery after our plates came, my request to hold the cranberry sauce was ignored (thank goodness it was in its own little cup and not clumped in with the gravy), and when we were done with our meals our plates weren't cleared until we had left the restaurant (presumably) even though it was really apparent because we had placed our used napkins onto the plates and the waitress had been to our table once after we had asked for our bill.
I think HM's customers would be better served by just having burgers, milkshakes and breakfasts on their menu. If not, then a "best enjoyed while drunk" disclaimer should be added under their specialty items. -

Wahhh!
I really, really, really wanted to love this place, but I don't even really like this place.
When my boyfriend and I moved into the neighborhood, it was one of the first places I wanted to try, it looked so cute and the menu looked pretty good.
We have tried it a few different times and for various meals. Everything was just okay. The only things that was good was the breakfast, and Joes down the street does it better with a larger selection and better prices.
Alas, I have given up on this place. Frown. -
Review from Haedis L.
Overall I would give this place 3.5 stars.
If you are going to get a milkshake this place definitely rates a 5! They have the milkshakes down to a science and they are the best I have had in the city so far.
However for normal food it's been consistently meh. If you are againt chain restauraunts than this place is a step-up from Denny's a mere block away.
My boyfriend ordered the deluxe grilled cheese sandwich with fries and it was all right. Edible but not terribly. Tasty but not delicious. You know the deal!
The fries were crispy and had that homemade-potato-fry charm going for it, but it still came up a bit bland. The sandwich actually seemed to have too many veggies in it which ultimately ended up overpowering the grilled cheesy goodness that should be there. The onions didn't seem as cooked as I would have liked and the tomato's were unripe and a tad bland. The mushrooms were delish though! Maybe a delux cheese + mushroom blend would have been good?
The pancake and french toast I ordered were meh, again so-so. The pancakes tasted like they were from a box and the french toast wasn't anything to write home about.
But even if the food is mediocre there is something about the ambience that I love, something that Davie would be missing if Mary's wasn't around. The servers have been friendly in both my encounters and the decor is comforting.
Come here for a milkshake! -
Review from Trish R.
Finding myself craving a traditional turkey dinner on Thanksgiving (two weeks ago), I searched Yelp and found out about H Mary's annual dinner special.
Wow, were we ever impressed! For $17, the dinner special included turkey dinner with all the trimmings, coffee or tea, and a slice of pumpkin pie. YUMMY!
The turkey dinner had a generous portion of perfectly cooked roast turkey nestled over a huge mound of perfectly seasoned stuffing. The mashed potatoes were plain but good, and the gravy wasn't the rich homemade gravy I was craving (it was probably fresh turkey pan drippings augmented with prefab gravy mix) but that didn't seem to matter. The mashed turnips were a little too bitter (I like my mashed turnips mixed with mashed carrots to take the edge off the bitter turnip); the mashed squash was nice, and the cooked carrots were perfect in butter and dill. They added a little bowl of harcourt beets (diced beets in sweet sauce), and a huge slice of fresh cooked ham. Garnished with a few tablespoons of cranberry sauce... and voila! A traditional English Thanksgiving feast!
The coffee was decent, and the pumpkin pie was bakery fresh. So grateful to have found out about the special and will definitely go back and try something else sometime soon! -

Not as good as I remember.
Back in the day, Hamburger Mary's was a frequent stop for my crew and I. Open 20 hours, being downtown and a good alternative to Denny's - it was a good spot to hit after drinking on Granville for some greazy burgers. Hell - it was fun to come here for a random 2AM milkshake craving. And I still like the campy 50's diner flair in the middle of Davie.
However, it's been years since I've been here ever since I stopped frequenting the Granville Strip - I keep getting older and they keep getting douchier.
My chili cheese burger was underwhelming - the chili wasn't bad, but the patty was pretty dry. Also, the fries were pretty soggy. What happened? I didn't mind the high-ish $9+ price point when food was good - but I've had better $4 burger/fries at ghetto greasy spoons.

I went after a couple years' absence, and was surprised at the thin crowd. The food was good - they even accommodated my gluten-free request. But the service! You could grow wrinkles waiting for someone to take your order or refill your glass. I rarely do this, but felt I had to leave a tip that reflected my displeasure.

Open 20 hours a day, this is a good alternative to Denny's for late night post party eats.
It was almost closing time, but the friendly lady server still sat us and served us.
They have your typical diner fare, all day breakfast, and all kinds of burgers. Lamb, salmon, bison....
I wasn't feeling like a burger, so I got an order of Winnipeg Perogies: cheese perogies topped with house made beef chili and broiled cheese with sour cream. I got the side order' portion. My friends got a clam chowder and a side of fries.
Food came quickly, despite the place being almost full. My perogies weren't bad. The portion was just the right size, and the chili was tasty. Add cheese and sour cream and being 3am, it was just what I needed. -

Oh Mary.
I know it may slip your mind when its 4am and you and you're friends are drunk and exhausted, but if you're stumbling up Davie street, please, oh PLEASE, keep walking past Denny's. Yes, you're hungry, yes you want bacon, who doesn't? But one more block down is some GOOD food. So please keep going.
A block past Denny's is Hamburger Mary's. A bonus for me no matter the restaurant, they serve breakfast all day. And by all day I mean allllll dayyyyyyy. They boast being open 23 hours a day. Don't ask me when that one hour is, I have yet to see it.
The staff have been there forever and get super grumpy if you try seating yourself so allow them to do so. They are attentative and quick, or maybe they are slow and rude, who knows, but they are better than Denny's.
Their Mary's Breakfast Sandwich is to die for. They have an amazing sausage patty that is making me hungry right now just thinking about it. The breakfast sandwich, is tomato, egg, sausage and cheese on an English muffin with hashbrowns on the side. Can you say heaven? They do it just right, and its something like $7. Nice.
I used to be a big fan of the Westender Breakfast which is pretty much everything, but after having the waffles a few times sober I've really lost my taste for them. They are too crispy and very toaster like. Everything else in that combo is delicious though.
This time I didn't forget the non-breakfast fare! This is a great place to get a burger, or a sandwich. They have good burgers including a bison burger. And with a hot turkey sandwich I'm not sure you can go wrong. Also a big selling point is they're gigantic milkshakes. This place is a 50's dinner and they don't forget the milkshakes, or the juke box.
All in all, I'm not making this place my one and only breakfast or late night spot, but when I'm thinking 3am bacon, this is where I'm heading. So it being hard to get your bill at the end of the meal or the fact that the food isn't out of this world is over ruled by the fact that they happily serve me at 5 am and it's not Denny's. -
Review from Behr S.
Mary, Mary quite contrary, could your service be any worse?
After waiting 40 minutes to be seated once our names had been taken down...and mind you, the place was barely full...to being sat at what must have been by far the smallest table in the place, getting shit service (it took an additional 20 minutes before the waitress even came to the table, not to mention...she got our drink orders wrong) and then having our bill fucked up....thank gawd the burger was at least delicious (and is the reason you got 2 stars instead of 1).
You would think, that during Pride weekend (2009), your service would be spot-on....go figure. -

Hamburger Mary's is this old fashioned diner along Davie Street right in the middle of the Davie Village. The place has appeal for someone that is looking for a decent meal at some local eatery that is hot and filling.
I paid just a bit more for a burger here than some of the other burger joints but I knew I was going to get served at my table and I was going to eat with real cutlery. Their is good variety in the choices of burgers, sandwiches and other breakfast and dinner meals on the menu.
So far I've been there 3 times and I have had no real big problems with eating there but given that the restaurant is in the David Village I have not been there at the odd times that is open to experience what happens when all the local color is there. -

Review from Reena M.
The service was pretty good, the food was okay. Considering a lot of it was things that I could make better than them, I had to give them 2 stars. I ordered the French toast, which wasn't thatttt great. But it was edible. The egg was sticking out too much in the sides. The hashbrowns were good but only because i felt nostalgic eating them, thinking back to my first year at UBC living in the Totem Park residence and eating at the cafeteria there. THey had those hashbrowns every morning. I'm pretty sure that's where my freshman 15 came from.
Everything else was alright.. not mind blowing. And price was alright... but not inexpensive, in my opinion. Esp. considering I could have made it at home.
The fact that they're open super late though is quite an appealing factor. I'd choose to go here over Denny's any day.Listed in: The Morning After...brunchity…

My friend brought me here when we found out Twisted Fork was closed for brunch.
This joint is your typical dinner fare. In NYC we have tons of diners, so I am almost immune to diner food. I expect a certain bare minimum quality, and as long as it is satisfied, I am happy. That was the case here at Hamburger Mary's. Decent food, that was a tad bit expensive. I didn't try their hamburger or milkshakes, but what I did try hit the spot.
I would come back the next time I am craving diner food. If I do, I will definitely try the recommendations, a milk shake, a hamburger, and some french onion soup!
P.S
I came here with two friends. We ordered the Turkey club, the house soup, and the french onion soup.
The Turkey club was done well, and tasted just as good as I expected. The house soup was bland and non remarkable. The French onion soup was a winner. I could easily come back and order it again. -

So first off, I'm not local; Hell...I'm not even from the country, but I know a damn fine burger and Mary's has one.
Let me tell you about the sad affairs called the American hamburger: cheap meat, skimpy half-assed toppings, stale ass bun and lots of condiments to cover that crap up. If you want a good burger in LA, and not follow the hipster In-N-Out crowd, you have to find a joint and very few people will let you in on their Burger Illuminati.
Hamburger Mary's is a good burger...a mighty fine one, in fact. So good, they give you a slather of BBQ sauce and that's all you need. I'm a bleu cheese acolyte...I live for the funk and Mary's brought the funk so strong that I thought Booty's Collins was in the kitchen.Mushrooms? Swimming in it! Look, I can't describe it enough: just gander at the pic.
15 bucks total for 2 days worth of grub...please, that's unheard of in LA. When you want quality, you better pull out that twenty and kiss it good-bye.
You see that, Angelinos? That is what a burger looks like. Not that lame @$&! we get...and I'm calling shenanigans.
It's in the West End/Davies Village but if you're a regular at WeHo, then it's no big deal. Good food, excellent service, and colorful people to watch in a diner atmosphere. You better watch out, Vancouver; when I come back, I'm bringing friends with me and we're going to invade your burger joints and your hospitals. -

Hamburger Mary's is a staple in just about any gaybourhood. The interesting thing is that they are all quite different from each other. When I think Hamburger Mary's, I think (veggie) burgers. I guess that's because my first Hamburger Mary's experience was in Washington, DC. I'd go there after marathon training and inhale a huge veggie burger. Mmm.
I never thought of Hamburger Mary's as a place for brunch, until I was there yesterday. One nice thing is that you can order french toast and waffles together, you know, in case you have a hard time deciding. Unfortunately, I wasn't blow away by either, but the home fries are amazing (I ate them off of my wife's plate much to her dismay). If I ever come back for brunch again, I'll order a plateful and skip the waffles and french toast altogether. -

Coming here after a long night out is customary. After all, what else is open at 3am (besides Dennys)? Exactly - so Hamburger Mary's it is!
Their nachos are so yummy - covered in cheese and veggies. The staff is super friendly - although I've seen them get annoyed at a few drunk patrons every now and again. And honestly, I feel that nothing taste better than the water here... that may also be because of the WHEN i usually go to Hamburger Mary's. I don't think I've ever been there when the sun was out! -

Hamburger Mary's isn't particularly notable for its food. I mean it's a chain, it's a diner, nothing is too out of the ordinary. But it automatically earns its weight in stars by consistently being open late and being a much better than Denny's option for the bleary-eyed drunk who's looking for a late night meal.
I think what's most notable is that, not only does their service not slip in the wee hours, I think it gets better. Hamburger Mary's is a fun place to be at 1:30 am. The atmosphere is fun, the food is quick and the servers are capable and friendly. Compared to The Naam and Denny's , both of which get more unfriendly as the night wears on, this is a bit of a miracle.
So yes, while it might not be much to look at in the daylight, you definitely can't beat Hamburger Mary's when it comes to late night downtown eats. -

I haven't actually had the Vancouver-famous milkshakes yet, but the all-day breakfast is the cheap treat on the menu. While the prices are for the most part $8 and up for standard fare, the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff make Hamburger Mary's a fine experience in the west end.
The 60's motif really adds a splash of charm to the place, but the staff don't overdo it so the restaurant isn't overly hokey.
While I've always enjoyed my time at Hamburger Mary's, I would have liked a few more vegetarian options on the menu. While I realize that many of you are probably thinking that I should know better than to expect vegetarian food at a hamburger joint, this *is* Vancouver and there are a lot of herbivores in the west-end community.
You'll enjoy your time there. Have a milkshake for me. -

Hamburger Mary's is a step up from your average diner, but still maintains that 1950s style charm- with added flair. Unlike the restaurant chain in the USA, there is no buxom woman in a wig to serve you dinner here; our server, not a bad looking chap, was far less flamboyant.
You can get typical diner fare here- although some of it has been adapted to west-coast tastes (vegetarian options, etc.) and it's some of the best as well. Good burgers here, although I wasn't too fond of the barbeque sauce. If you're like me, and appreciate a good strawberry milkshake, this is absolutely the place to be- we actually ordered another.
Hamburger Mary's is located at Davie and Bute in the West End, and is a neighbourhood fixture. -

Late on Saturday night/Sunday morning, I got the drunk texts "meet us at Mary's, hurry up the kitchen is closing." Since the other peeps I was with were just as famished as me after working all night, we loaded up the car and headed out.
This place sure does beat Denny's for food quality, but that doesn't say much. The food is average, I had the zoo sticks (deep fried zukes covered in batter with a ranch dressing for $7.00) and they were alright. The BF had the perogies, which again, were okay, but like Reena has pointed out in her review, these are things you could make at home. I could, if I had actually bought groceries before work and not laid in bed like a waste of hungover space all day on Saturday. However, the last time I tried to make a grilled cheese after a night at work, silly, sleep-deprived-me burnt the damn thing without even melting the cheese. The BF still ate it, which is why I know he loves me so, but sometimes its best to leave the cooking to the pros.
The place has that super cool 50's diner appeal with the jukebox in the back and fancy decor. I thought it was odd that they were in such a rush to close the kitchen when we only arrived around 3:30am, and the place was open until 4am. So what are the people who show up at 3:45am supposed to do? I guess those are the people who end up at Denny's? -

This place is up the street from us as well so we grabbed a quick breakfast on our way to the seawall for some outdoor fun. We grabbed the veggie egg scramble and the fruit cup. It came out to approximately $25 after tax and tip. Not somewhere I would seek out but not a bad place if you end up there.

I haven't been to Hamburger Mary's in a while and now I remember why. My friend and I were craving milkshakes...where does one go at 10:30pm on a Monday night that's not McDonald's? Not too many choices.
Anyway, we went here tonight and they were out of cherry (again - this had happened before) and the chocolate one was very heavy and tasted like syrup, not that chocolatey. Meh. The coffee one tasted similar to the chocolate one. Meh x 2.
Also, a street person came in and started harassing us (I'm usually pretty patient and I know there are a few weirdos on Davie but this guy was very obnoxious) and the staff didn't do anything to stop or escort him out. The guy at the table next to him took him outside and gave him who knows what to go away. Uncomfortable to say the least..
The milkshakes weren't that good ($6.50 each so not cheap either) and the weird moment with the weird dude didn't help their cause. -

It was like taking a trip back to the 50's and the 60's. Old-school decoration and atmosphere. Our server was quite friendly. The layout of their menu I found quite confusing. Finally, I settled for a good 'o burger with cheesy fries.
The fries were great, simply great; however, the burger itself was not that remarkable. Beef patty was on the dry side (what happen to good greasy goodness?) and the server told me because people are health-conscience these days... does anyone eat burgers to be healthy???!!!
Well, based on my experience: service: 3.5 star, fries: 5 stars, burger: 1.5 star.
Over all, it's not too too bad. -

Hamburger Marys- the ultimate flapjack destination!
I can't resist getting breakfast for dinner here. Their flapjacks are cheap and just right. But then I'm stuck bumming sips of milkshakes and a bite of a burger from my table mates. The milkshakes are wonderful- exactly what you would expect from a diner.
This place sees more people in the late hours, but it's a good place to go at any time of the day. -

***I'm putting this part first because I want people to read it. Regular review to follow:***
There was a chalk board on the counter and it had the daily milkshake flavours on it. The first one on the list was PB&J. Am I the last person to hear about this? And how did I not think of this before? It was freaking delicious. It must have been 750mL at least, and they made it exactly as you would expect: ice cream, milk, peanut butter, strawberry jam. The waitress told me she's been experimenting with different brands of jam because it's hard to get the peanuty buttery goodness of peanut butter and the overwhelming taste of strawberry to balance out without overpowering each other or canceling each other out. Mission accomplished. One warning: it wasn't cheap ($6.59 plus tax and tip). And yeah, you could probably make it at home for 1/30 of the cost. But I applaud the effort and creativity and I admit that as milkshakes go, it was fantastic. And milkshakes go pretty fantastic to begin with, so that's saying a lot.

Hamburger Mary's is precisely the image that comes to mind when I hear the word diner. They're open 22 hours a day. The booths and chairs are beat up from a million+ uses (although everything is much cleaner than you would expect from a place like this). They know the regular customers by name. Their menu has everything on it from burgers to seafood. And (drum roll, please).... all day breakfast (need I say more).
I had the city-style breakfast: two eggs, bacon or sausage (I had sausage), hash browns and toast. Generous portions. Tasty food. Decent price. Friendly staff. I'm glad I live so close.
