I think this place has one of the best sushi out there. Fish is extremely fresh and specially if u like things like Uni, u can not go wrong here. Service is also very good. Prices are decent, and the only problem is that the place is a little so small. Otherwise this is THE BEST sushi on north shore for sure.

Hands down, best Japanese food on the North Shore.  Don't bother with Sushi Bella, Zen Sushi and any of the other crappy sushi joints around.  Hamaei serves real authentic Japanese food and super fresh sushi.  They have an extensive menu with the usual suspects (teriyaki, tempura, noodles, gyoza etc) plus a specials menu with a wide variety of authentic Japanese food.  The sushi chefs are amazing and they have a good selection of sushi each night.  The roll combo is a great value as it gets you three different rolls for $11.95.

Also, don't forget to come here for lunch!! You can get some great lunch boxes for under $10.  Or spend a little bit more and get the daily special which comes with a variety of yummy offerings.

Dropped in for some take-away.  Super friendly service, food ready in under 15 minutes and very tasty even after driving home.  New fav sushi place in North Van.

This place looks like a really ordinary sushi place on the outside but you realize it isn't your typical sushi restaurant when you get inside. The menu comes with a full two pages with specials. These tend to be things you won't find at a lot of other sushi restaurants. Prices are pretty reasonable overall. Maybe a bit more expensive than normal but not by much.

This is the best authentic Japanese restaurant in North Shore.
You can taste how much they care in their green tea.
Japanese chefs offer great selections of fresh fish daily.  Lunch menu is great and gets you full with not so much spent.  Too bad they are not open for lunch on weekends!  Reservation is recommended to beat the line up.

Best In Vancouver....Although I don't get off the North Shore so at least in North Vancouver. If you are looking for authentic JAPANESE then this is your place.

    Two words: queasy and frightening.

I usually trust my Japanese friend when it comes to sushi joints, but I was shocked by Hamaei. Why it's so popular is a mystery to me.

We went there for dinner on a weeknight, and all the tables filled up shortly after we arrived. When we left, there were even people waiting! Japanese, Caucasian, Chinese, and  Iranian customers, families with young children, men in sweatpants, hippies wearing Birkenstocks, women dressed in business suits.

Did none of these people see the black mould (I kid you not) on the carpet near the windows, or the stains on the menus? My menu even came with a hair. I thought I was being punked. The bottom of my sauce dish was greyish brown with grime. The wall beside our table was dirty. The pot of tea being brought around by the server was badly, badly stained. And yes, I even saw a little fly buzzing around in early April.

The food could have been okay - I'm not sure because I was so grossed out by the time it came, that I felt physically queasy.

New sushi restaurant in Westview Shopping Centre. It is Japanese owned and the menu and taste is authentic. My only qualms about this place is that the service is very slow.. but they have real-crab california rolls and things of that nature, which will run you a pretty penny but it is worth checking out and deciding for yourself.

Very fresh fish; real crab meat in the California rolls; good sushi rice that was not too sweet; very nice halibut sashimi the day I was there.  Also they comped us with this very impressive-looking fried shrimp head that was crunchy and fun to eat.

Hamaei is our favourite Japanese restaurant on the North Shore.  The food is always very fresh and the service is excellent.  Hamaei is a run by Takash and Yuko, a husband/wife team, who do their very best to ensure that you have a wonderful meal.  My favourites are their unagi and spider rolls, tuna and sockeye salmon sashimi and their grilled black cod.  They can get quite busy on Fridays and Saturdays, so it is best to make a reservation.  We love the place so much that we head there most Friday nights.
