"Have a good night and thank you for choosing Halsey St. Grille."
These were the exact words spoken as the man who delivered my food left my door 7 minutes ago.
I placed my order on Eat24 at 6:19p and my bell rang at 6:43p. I was concerned after reading all reviews, but am pleasantly surprised. The delivery man told me that they ran out of sweet ice tea and was ready to reimburse me, but I told him to keep it and add it to the cash tip I gave him.
So far so good. I have yet to open the bag, check and eat my food. I'll keep you posted. -

They're alright, okay, I'll give them a shout.
Good lunch-kind-of-food. The staff there are friendly for the most part, and most of the items they have are pretty well prepared. The turkey legs are divine, and so is the mac-n-cheese. Sometimes they have red velvet cake (ugh, it's a must!) - so so good.
The banana pudding dessert is kind of diabetes inducing, so I'd stay away.
Good price though, less than $10 for a plate (main dish with two sides) which for solid food and solid service for NYC on a budget is pretty damn good. Bring cash! -
Review from Lauren S.
Honestly, I would give it 1.5 stars....I have good reason.
Tonight I was in the neighborhood, and since I've been meaning to try this place for quite awhile, I thought I'd finally check it out. Halsey Street Grill is a little "to-go" jawn basically consisting of a kitchen with prepared food behind a plexiglass partition on steam tables. Patrons stand/line-up on the walk-in side, and the people in the kitchen have you yell what you want over the partition after you read off the chalkboard menu. I like the chalkboard menu because that way if they're out of something, it won't be on the menu (hopefully). The prices were reasonable and there were a decent amount of choices. There aren't any tables (that I saw) to sit and eat, but there's a small waiting area. It's chaotic.
The Food
--------------
First, I've had good soul food....really good soul food. So the bar is set high. After tasting my food, I'd have to say, this ain't it. I'm kinda mad at the fact that I have to call it, because I wanted to like this place a lot, and it's sad, because it's the closest real soul food place to my crib...but I'd have to say I'd rather take the train to Foster's or the City. It's better for my belly to not be a fan anyway.
I wouldn't use the word bad though to describe their food. Some aspects were decent (bbq chicken, mac-n-cheese), Others were below average (dry fried chicken with sub-par crispiness), and some I could make better in my sleep (yams)....
The itis I got actually put me in a coma for 4 hours...I fell asleep mid-typing on facebook after eating....it was intense...but that's gonna happen
How They Operate
--------------------------
The main reason for the 1.5 stars was how when I placed my order, I kept getting interrupted by an employee who had arrived to help with the chaos that this place is, to find "to go" orders literally filled, bagged and stacked high on some shelving in the corner waiting to go out....some for over an hour. I honestly didn't blame her for wringing her hands and exclaiming over and over again at the madness that stacking to-go orders on a bookshelf near the benches is. At least someone sees something wrong with this picture. When I looked over to see what she was so excited about, my eyes pretty much buldged out of my head, and I almost let out a "wtf"!
Not only is this obviously indicative of poor-zero management and/or being understaffed, it's probably dangerous for the food to sit out that long, not to mention all of the hungry and probably frustrated people waiting. Seeing as I've read about their being a frequent delay in delivery, and now seeing what goes on in the place, I'm shocked that it's still this bad and nothing has been done to address the situation.
Also, they're out of printed menus. I think the phones were ringing off the hook with "where's my food" complaints while new orders were coming in that were going to be set on the bookshelves after being filled......
Words To The Owners....
-----------------------------------
Get it together, Halsey St. Grill. You need a good manager who has enough staff and a good, organized system. We need you in the neighborhood, and we need you to step up the food a little more, so please...I hope you read these reviews and do what ya gotta do, cuz we want you to suceed. Until then, I'll be eating my soul food West Indian style since I live in Crown Heights, or I'll take the train to Fosters. -

Maybe they shouldn't offer delivery service? Their food Is good but the delivery leaves a horrible taste in my mouth!
We ordered and the food took an hour and a half to come. It came cold and had to be reheated. The owner was not able to provide me with a satisfactory solution when I called to complain. He said that there was no way he could do something for every customer (that really makes me want to spend my money there) and he would not offer me any type of credit. -
Review from Clyde N.
It started off so great....what happened? Did they just get comfortable and slacked? I've gotten food from Halsey Street Grill a few times since my last review (most recently was ordered online through seamless). And the quality has gotten progressively worse each time.
Let me start off with the good. Customer service is still great. They treat you like you're the only customer in the world and are very, very respectful. Also, not sure about the other reviews but delivery wait time was not that long. ~25min. But that could've just been my experience.
The bad. Let's just use my most recent time: I ordered Pork rib tips with rice and peas (requesting gravy on the rice), cole slaw and potato salad. My gf ordered the fried chicken with mac n cheese and french fries.
1) Rib tips were fatty and undesirable
2) I'm not sure what kind of "gravy" they used, but my rice came out wet and gloppy with some kind of clear substance
3) They had neither cole slaw nor potato salad. (I'll let this one slide, I understand you run out of food sometimes). So I was called up and given options to replace it with. I chose....
4) Collard Greens (which were extremely salty) and Mac n Cheese (which was dry and definitely not easy on the mouth)
5) The fried chicken was extremely dry. It was as if it was made a few hrs ago and just popped back in the microwave.
6) The french fries were under cooked, yet dark brown and oily. Which leads me to believe they were either left out chillin' all day or fried in some really disgusting and old oil.
All-in-all, I really don't want to give up on this place. But I will be giving them a break.I'll order again in a few months and evaluate again. But if I get the same results, then I definitely will not be back,1 Previous Review: Show all »

No. No. Hell to the damn no. I ordered food from here via http://Eat24.com at 7:15pm. My food was delivered at 8:22 pm. Not so bad, given that I planned to wait for fifty years for my food based on the other reviews I read.
I ordered fried whiting and shrimp with fries and a side of Mac and cheese -_- If my stomach had arms and hands, it would have punched me in the face for trying to eat it.
I waited for over an hour for this food just so that I wouldn't have to get out of the bed. Y'all, that food was so bad to me, that I had to get my butt up, get dressed, & drive to this place to return this stuff. Oh Lord.
The only reason I do not give this place 1 star, is because the customer service was impeccable. I asked for my money back and no one gave me a hard time at all! Great people...I don't want that food, though. -

Ordered for delivery. Be prepared to wait an hour or more!
I ordered BBQ Chicken breast, mac n' cheese and candied yams.
Mac n' Cheese and Yams were perfect! Chicken was average. It was perfectly glazed and easy on the eye..but not so easy on the mouth. It was a bit on the dry side and a bit hard.
The delivery guy is friendly and so are the order takers..4 stars for customer service. It's extremely refreshing to NOT have to deal with attitude from ppl in "Customer Service" positions for once.. :) -

The BBQ chicken, Mac and cheese and yams are my favs! Delivery varies....I've had it come very early and also very late but I must say the delivery guys are always very pleasant which keeps me ordering from them...I wasn't too fond of the peach cobbler...pls change that recipe :(

Disappointed. I frequent Halsey Street Grill, usually getting the catfish or tilapia with some combination of fries, mac n cheese, yams, greens which is usually pretty tasty and served in generous portions. I tried the delivery service through Seamless and it took an HOUR AND A HALF for my food to arrive, though Seamless estimates 30-45 minutes. Not cool. Not to mention that I wanted banana pudding but they were out so had to substitute peach cobbler. If you're going to have a delivery service either do it right (hire another delivery guy) or don't do it at all.

I finally found a place that has not been taken over by people from out of town who now call Brooklyn home. This is a local restaurant where actual local (born and raised in Bed-Stuy) people eat.
The food was very good from the bbq chicken to the beef ribs. The food was fresh and well seasoned. The side dishes were also very good. The collard greens were a little salty but still tasty. The food is affordable and nice size portions.
I definitely recommend this place and just hope it does not get too gentrified. -
Review from R.L. W.

As I sit in my house which is 4 blocks away from this restaurant, my stomach is growling and has become angry with me. Now I love the fish here and I DO NOT RECOMMEND ordering for delivery. It took them a hour and 1/2 to deliver two fish dinners to me. After 50 minutes of waiting I called to tell them that I will pick the food up (being that they're only 4 blocks away from me and the reason I got delivery is why everyone else get delivery because I was hungry and lazy) but they told me it had already gone out. It took another 40 minutes for it to arrive. That's ridiculous!!! If you can't handle delivery then don't offer it.
Another reason not to order delivery is that they'll give you anything they want. I ordered Ice-T and I received this nasty, tasteless, red water with a bunch of sugar that they called Fruit Punch. I called and asked them if they ran out of Sweet Tea and they said yes. I expressed to them (angrily) that they just can't give me anything they want. So I'm officially done with this place! I'm from the south, I can catch my own fish, scale it, clean it, gut it, season it and fry it up myself! This was my 2nd bad experience with them and I'm OFFICIALLY DONE!! -

I finally found a place in my area with decent food but of course there is always a catch!...I ordered my food at 4:00pm and it is now 6:09pm...Im not sure this restaurant likes to make money... This is the second time Ive waited for my food for over an hour... Not to mention no one called me to give a friendly headups that it was behind... I really hate that it is a black owned establishment because I rather take my business elsewhere... I cant support the people that dont support themselves!

After reading all the reviews I really hoped that my first experience with Halsey Street Grill would be a great one. I wish I could say it was was but sadly it wasn't. Last night I ordered a fried whiting dinner with collard greens, mac n' cheese, potato salad and iced tea on http://seamless.com and the confirmation email arrived at 5:35 pm giving me a delivery time of 35-45 minutes (okay, I've heard about the wait -no problem) but 20 minutes later a call comes in....Me: "Hello?" - HSG: " Yes, this is Halsey Street Grill, you placed an order with us?" - Me: "Yes?" - HSG: "We ran out of potato salad dear, would you like to pick another side order?" - Me: "Are all the prices the same for side orders? I don't have a menu in front of..." - HSG (cutting me off): " The prices are all the same I just need you to pick one" - Me (taken aback): "Okay another mac n cheese" - HSG (Abrubtly): "Okay" CLICK!
Needless to say at this point I'm a little annoyed with the caller's attitude however I let it go so I could enjoy my food which arrived in a little under an hour (okay, good sign) I opened my bag to check out the whiting right away which was delicious! My mac n' cheese was so-so and a bit dry. The collard greens were just okay and looked like I had the portion from the bottom of the pot (you could see all the seasoning piled up on top of the greens). I sipped my ice tea which was really nasty and nothing but brown sugar water!!! THEN IT HIT ME...WHERE'S MY OTHER SIDE ORDER OF MAC N' CHEESE?
So I call HSG... Me: " Hi, I just placed an order for..., I just received it and I am missing my side order of mac n' cheese" - HSG: " We ran out of mac n' cheese" - Me: "Sir you called me because you ran out of potato salad and told me to pick something else, you didn't know then that you ran out of mac n' cheese?" - HSG: " No not at the time" - Me: "Okay, so will I receive some sort of credit since it was already paid f..." - HSG (cutting me off again): "Listen, call back tomorrow and ask for Victor"... At this point I hung up.
PEOPLE let me just say this, I am all for supporting businesses, especially black owned businesses BUT if the food is just okay and the customer service sucks then my support will go elsewhere. If your portions are huge and your customer service sucks my support will go elsewhere...Good customer service counts! I will not call Victor, no need. I'll let that go! Will I try them again? Hmmm, maybe some time in the future if they're not closed. (Not trying to be mean, just saying) -

The Mac n Cheese was slam'n!!!! I also had the greens, bbq chicken, and candied yams. The yams were not candied, and the greens were basic.
The food was delivered it took 45min to an hour. I was prepared for that based on previous Yelp reviews. It was worth the wait.
Over all 4 stars. -

YOOOOO!!! Shout out to Ras R for your review! I swear I was JUST about to say the exact same thing! Just what u said has happened to me about three times AND they always forget a side or give the wrong side...I actually went in an spoke with the "owner/manager" face to face and told him I love their food but their delivery and phone service is horrible! he just nonchalantly said with a laugh "heeeeey baby! If you want good food, sometimes you gotta wait!" WTF?!?!? (Be sure to peep the photo I took that day by the way.)
PLUS they are known to run out of whiting early in the day...this is what they're supposed to be known for...jus sayin -

This review is waaaaay overdue...my bad
I want to give them six stars.
The food was absolutely AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I had BBQ chicken that was sooo smokey and dripping with sauce, I was in heaven. The best cabbage I've had outside my home and some really fabulous candied yams.
I also had the fruit punch which was a perfect finish to my meal.
Thank you Halsey Street Grill for being so close to home and being so damn good!
See you soon!!!!Listed in: You gon' eat yo' cornbread?

Mmmmmm.....where do I start?!!
My boyfriend and I had dinner from here last week. I had the smothered pork chop with greens and macaroni and cheese. He had fried chicken with the same sides.
Oh my goodness!!! The pork chop was delicious, the greens were out of this world and the mac-n-cheese was as good as it always should be. But the highlight of my meal, both when I had it fresh and when I ate the leftovers two days later, was the gravy. My mouth is watering just thinking about that gravy! Had I known how delicious the gravy was, I would have requested it on top of everything I ordered. So good! (This is seriously the most passionate review I've written ever? Or maybe just in a long, long time...)
My boyfriend also enjoyed his meal. The chicken was fried fresh, just the way he likes it. We had to wait for it, but we're down with waiting for good food.
This is definitely one of my new, go-to-delivery spots. -

5.....
$5......
$5 holla, every, every day!
The lunch special is literally called the $5 holla!! Chicken(your choice of bbq, baked, or fried) with 2 sides, hold the biscuit. The shine from those collards, the sweet sauce glistening from that bbq chicken and the way that mac and cheese was being prepared and put in the oven (damn, if I only went about 40 minutes later) was enough to make me wanna do a crazy stunt move and bust thru that glass!
Okay, down to business. No jokes, in all seriousness and I kid you not, that bbq chicken tastes like it came straight off the smoker. It had just the right amount of char on it and that sauce was so doggone good. It was just sweet enough which was a great accompaniment with the salty collards and sweet buttery corn (my 2 sides of choice).
And you know I had to get me some sweet tea, y'all. I was expecting a 16oz foam cup, but my man brought out the chinese food container iced tea (you know what the hell I'm talking about). Perfectly sweetened and your girl got perfectly sleepy after that. Actually, I did sink down in my chair at work for a quick second.
Shoot, I wanna do it again tomorrow. -
Review from Donna A.
Saturday night at home on the couch, no incentive to make anything to eat, and definitely no incentive to have a healthy meal. It's Saturday lazy day for goodness sake. Check Seamless and want to try something new. Oooh. Halsey Street Grill menu has lots of fried goodness including a heavenly combo of shrimp, whiting, coleslaw and fries for $21. Might as well throw in some mac and cheese, it is lazy Saturday after all. Thirty minutes later food arrives, fills bellies, and adds to stage III of lazy Saturday: Post food coma.

This review is only based on a delivery order:
After deciding that Friday night was dedicated to sitting on the couch, watching movies and not leaving the house, I set out to figure out what the meal of the night would be without me cooking. After surfing http://seamless.com, I came across Halsey Street Grill. I had my heart set on a fried feast...That was until my trainer sent me a text as I prepared to press the submit button and reminded me that the next day was a weigh-in day. Seriously, does he have hidden cameras in my apartment?! Urgh, recalculating. As I scanned the menu again, I came across the somewhat less exciting steamed meal option: tilapia, shrimp and veggies + I decided to add a side of mac n' cheese, but promised myself to only eat half of it (hey, a girl's gotta have treats). It took more than an hour for delivery, which was a bit over the estimated time provided. Once the food arrived, I was immediately happy. The steamed seafood was in the equivalent of a vat of butter, but very tasty. Let's face it, that vat added to the tastiness of the meal. I will order from here again and be sure to factor some extra time in for the long delivery and I'll do it with my cell phone powered off so as not to risk any interuptions from ordering fried feasts. -

The fried catfish was well seasoned and delicious. Their macaroni isn't creamy, but the ground pepper sets it off and it's also pretty good. Candied yams were good. I'd recommend the smothered pork chops - they're so flavorful and the gravy was perfect. you get two - one of mine was a bit overcooked, so I will caution them next time I order. But fast delivery... very nice... and great prices.
They weren't very patient with me on the phone though, lol... but I can live with that. Definitely my new delivery spot in bedstuy when I want some real soul food. -
Review from Jasi B.
I had the $5 lunch special with the i'macutegirl hookup, cause jerk chicken and mac and cheese are definitely not included in the special.
Both were great. Like really really really great. Like damn, I"m mad this ain't really on the special. The jerk chicken is boneless breast, spicy and tangy, oh so good. The mac and cheese is your traditional soul food baked macaroni and cheese with just enough creaminess. The rice and peas was cool too.
So then I had one of my hair clients order delievry while I was doing their hair. Except they don't answer they phone when their busy so we ordered GrubHub, which really doesn't reflect what they may or may not have in the restaurant. Such as BBQ chicken white meat, which we did pay the extra $1 for but did not receive. Them onion rings is regular ol' Pathmark frozen onion rings...take them off the menu. I don't know that I would actually order delivery again, but I do live two blocks away, touche.
So the following day I went back and had the catfish sandwich which for $5 was huuuuuge. Like amazingly huge. And it was definitely well seasoned and crispy but something about it was just off...like I tasted fried egg. Egg in the batter? Not beat all the way? Too much? IDK, it wasn't to the point where I didn't like it, I enjoyed it but that after taste was bugging me. I'll try it again one day..
Somehow this veered to a not so postive review lol
Not true.
Just don't do delivery and you'll be a happy camper.
Or order on grub-hub and pick up your order.
Just don't have them actually deliver it.
And I don't really like eggs....but otherwise the cat fish was delish. -

Really excellent fried chicken, with an amazingly crispy skin and a coating that had a great homemade texture. Very good baked Mac and cheese, also with a fine crunchy topping. Fried N'awlins shrimp were well-seasoned and golden. Fries were less successful, limp and underdone, and the greens were just OK. Delivery came much faster than I expected.

Delicious food!! All I have to say is the fried whiting is becoming addictive! I love it. Some of the best I ever tasted! That is all I really get when I go. Starting to wish this place wasn't so close to me because I want to go every day!
The mac and cheese is yummy also. -

Well, being that I'm not a meat eater, I don't know how many people this review will matter to, but after a few visits to the Halsey St. Grill, I just had to do it. Now, I use to eat meat, but only gave it up about four years ago. My business partner loves meat and raves about Halsey St. Grill, but I'll leave that for her review. But I will say that EVERYTHING looks good. Niiiice & juicy!!!!!
So, by now, the staff knows that I'm just into the veggies, When my partner & I went the other day, although they had their standard array of collard greens, corn & string beans, I was asked if I would like some roasted vegetables instead (corn, broccoli & white potatoe), to which I happily said yes to, with my only request being no salt. He said that it would be about 15 or 20 minutes, and I was more than happy to wait. Especially since it's been an almost impossible task to go to some of the local restaurants and get a vegetable plate that is as satisfying as their non veggie plate. Either because of the less that exciting taste or the tiny portion. None of which existed here.
When he brought my plate to me, it smelled good, looked good, and tasted even better. Oh, I can't forget the portion. I just looked at it for a few moments, and even took a picture. On top of that, it was actually corn on the cob cut into nice edible pieces.
My partner looked at me because she could tell how excited I was about the journey I was about to embark on. Aaaand she has seen my disappointment in other restaurants, so she was just about as happy as I was. Now it was time to take a bite, and Oh My Goodness!!!!! It was soooo DELICIOUS and PERFECTLY seasoned!!!!! I sat in the back where they have some seating and I took my time and enjoyed EVERY bite.
I went back a few days later and had some collard greens, string beans, candied yams and corn, and they did it again. They gave me portions like I was at home, and it tasted like I was at my family reunion.
So although you probably won't be going there for just their vegetables, you could. As a matter of fact, I'm going back today. If you don't feel like cooking, Halsey St. Grill has some home cooking for ya!!!!! Absolutely guaranteed!!!!! -

This is my second time ordering from this restaurant. The first time i ate here my face looked like this -_-. Today i decided to give it a second try and i must say Wow!! The BBQ sauce on the cold dry chicken was great. The oily rice and peas was okay. The cabbage was pretty good. The homemade fruit punch syrup and water was sweet. I think they added too much syrup. But hey what do you expect from a restaurant that is 3 mins away by car, 10 mins away by bus and bike and 20mins walking distance to bring my food 1 hour late and no the delivery guy did not walk. I would rather drink tap water from the bathroom sink to stop my stomach from talking than to order from here again. Today was a shame on me moment. (Gave one star for the BBQ sauce and one star for the cabbage. I should have just gave a half a star each but i want to be nice.)

Review from Taiyo O.
It's cute from outside as inside....and had an easy-comfy vibe. The staff welcomed with a warm smile (that makes real soul food!!).
Our iced tea (only $1.25) came in a large size plastic soup container and loved it for different but very practical.. The idea of a cut opening in the lit for straw.was very clever. See photo.
Collard green was tasty and I loved it! One of my friends (Southerner) said that this is how it's cooked in the south. Nicely executed Catfish complemented with well seasoned side dishes. I liked their mac&cheese. The nice crust of melting cheddar cheese made me smile. Nicely seasoned and freshly fried chicken was moist inside and crunchy out side. Yum!
This place got very busy when we were there (7:45PM). For the quality, portion, great taste and very reasonable price, MUST try! -

I take out from here probably way more than I should. Staff are always very friendly, portions are generous, and the food itself has yet to disappoint. I don't eat beef, pork or seafood, so my opinion is based on the various chicken and turkey mains (fried, grilled, baked, BBQ, etc.) and the sides (collards, corn, mac n cheese, string beans, cabbage, sweet potatoes - OMG, rice, rice n peas - had 'em all and all are delicious).
For those like me, who at times get a little skeeved out by buffet setups/food sitting and waiting to be served, there are no worries here. The place is always busy so the food rotates quickly and is always fresh. Also, it's not a "serve yourself what you like" kind of buffet where all kinds of random riff raff are coming in digging around in the food. It's behind a solid partition and only the employees serve you according to your specs (a leg or a thigh? which piece, crispy or not-so-crispy? gravy or no gravy? is that enough?). -

Takeout I can stand behind! I'm a fan for sure. Their seafood is very well spiced whether fried, broiled, or grilled. Just had the fried whiting and it was so fantastic that me and The Betrothed ate 4 pieces each in like five minutes. There was a ten for $6 special and I just knew we'd have some for at least two meals but no ma'am, didn't happen. The sides are where I have my issue but I have high standards for soul food sides. I've tried the fries, mac and cheese, greens, and cabbage. Next time I'll try the candied yams though because they do look good and I will be back anyway for the main dishes because they rock my evil socks. Customer service is awesome too which is something you don't really get much from take out spots but you definitely do here. Another bonus, they take credit cards.

I've ordered take out from this restaurant several times and they never disappointed me. The food is still piping hot when it is delivered. Everything tastes good. There was only one instance when they ran out of potato salad for my order. They called me for a substitute and gave me a slice of cake for free. It is one of my favorite Bed-Stuy establishments

Sure the wait for delivery took a while. (I think just over an hour?) But the food was SOOOO GOOOOD once it arrived. It was still warm and the portions were huge. I think we may end up ordering from them once a week- Just from now on I'll place my order on my way home from work so I don't have to wait forever. Simple solution.

Review from Tonya C.
I ordered the homemade turkey wings with yams and cabbage this past week & absolutely loved it. I was expecting small finger sized wings and instead opened the take out box to two huge turkey wings the size of pork ribs. They were so tender the meat practically fell off the bones. The cook called & said they were out of yams & asked what I'd like instead, so I was completely surprised when I open my container to find a hefty serving of yummy yams. The yams were just as tender and perfectly sweet and the cabbage reminded me of Thanksgiving at home. This truly was the closest thing I've had to a home cooked since moving to New York. Now my reason for not giving them 5 stars was because the delivery guy got lost on the way to my house then argued with me that I put my address down wrong. The getting lost part, no big deal. The swearing I don't know my own address part, not so cool. And despite having a crappy attitude and basically throwing the bag to me before walking away, I still tipped him. I will definitely eat here again, but I'm not so sure I'll be placing any orders for delivery anytime soon. Bad, bad delivery guy!!!
