Hipsters: what are they good for? Besides propping up the suspender and skinny tie market, not much. The blessing in unflattering disguise of skinny jeans is that natural selection may play a role in reproduction. Lotta hipsters at Halo. Also a lot of former hipsters now graduated to young professional status, or "yuppsters". A dance floor filled with people swaying ironically to ironic dance remixes of Vampire Weekend and such. But nevertheless I had fun: funky decor, relaxed older crowd, good downtown location. Just need to find some darker-rimmed glasses for next time.

So I made my most recent visit to Halo Lounge a couple of Saturdays ago. The trip to Halo was preceded by a Passion Party and pre-drinking at one of my best friend's apartments (it was her birthday). After losing count of sour appletinis and losing track of the time, someone suggested we make our way to the bars. After all, we were all wearing shimmery pheromone spray to attract men, so we may as well go out and find ourselves some men.
We took the train from Grandin Station to Corona (yes, you read that correctly - one stop) and stumbled down the stairs to Halo. Cover plus coat check came to more money than I had for just myself, yet somehow Mia and I were both able to check our coats and make our way into the club. Huh.
My friends tell me that we did a tequila shot as soon as we got into the bar. I'll take their word for it.
We spent some time on the dance floor, making our way through the crowd of hipsters to get more drinks from the bar, and dancing some more.
My time at Halo didn't last long (I, uh, wasn't feeling that well), nor was it especially memorable, but that's not Halo's fault.
Music was good, the bar felt full, no major problems. I would visit again. -

Halo is a little bit of a hole-in-the-wall as far as location goes, and the entrance is blocked off by a set of stairs going somewhere else in the complex. If you didn't know where it was, you'd probably walk right by it.
This is by far the coolest club I've been to in Edmonton. The place is pretty small but they somehow manage to jam-pack the seats in. Not in a claustrophobic way; many groups can be comfortably seated. The place has an eerie red glow to it and makes you feel like you're in a science fiction novel. Oddly enough, this is the kind of place I'd bring my laptop to to work on a paper. Lots of chatter and throbbing music to tune out any distractions. And based on the chill crowd, I don't think anyone would mind.
The music is of the techno/trance variety which I enjoy, but it can sometimes be hard to dance to (for me anyway.) My one complaint is that the dance floor is pretty tiny. You can usually make it on, though, so it's not a huge deal.
If you're looking for a chill place to dance and share some drinks, this is it. -

I really do not like bars, but I don't mind Halo. This is mainly because I actually like the music they play. They completely stray away from Top 40 and focus more on indie, electro, or old pop like Jackson Five. They play music you can really dance to like CSS, New Young Pony Club, or older brit pop.
This bar definitely has the whole "mod" thing going on. I would say that it's a bit pretentious, maybe trying a little too hard to capture a certain vibe, rather than just letting it happen.
Halo is fairly small, and there's not a lot of room on the dance floor, but I'm not sure if enough people would show up to fill a bigger area. Whenever I go here, it's always fun, and I get to dance to awesome music that I love! -

Halo is one of the better bars in Edmonton because it's small and chilled out. When I walked in for the first time and saw the lush red lighting inside I felt like I was walking into a Hippie's room (the kind you see in the movies, black lights, smoke filled, lava lamps, etc) but it wasn't quite like that. It doesn't play you're regular hip hop music, that is standard in clubs, it plays more electro and house. The dance floor is really small but I enjoy just standing around and chatting with friend's while having a drink.
The best way I can describe Halo this, it is the wanting to be different twin brother of Fluid. If you haven't been to Fluid you probably won't understand, but they are both tiny with small dance floors, have a specific colored lighting and are great for hanging out. They just play different types of music. -

This fabulous little bar in downtown Edmonton is definitely a "different" bar.
The place is in a basement, which made me think it would be dark and dingy and stinky. Well, it is dark. Dark Red.
This place glows in a bright red aura and the bar is always full. I always enjoy coming here because it has such a good atmosphere. The music is different (At one point, I caught myself dancing to a remixed version of ABC's by the Jackson 5) and it fits with the mood of this cool bar.
I will be going back to this basement hang out again and again. -

Halo's interior is gorgeous; very James Bond/Clockwork Orange and true to its modernist ideals. I've admittedly had some great times here, but it's usually been due to Stella Artois-influenced hipster-watching (when is that guy gonna take off his sunglasses?).
While Halo's weekly Friday mod night is easily one of the best DJ nights in the city, it seems primarily geared towards getting wasted 20-year-olds to dance to the songs they already know and hear week after week after week... after week.
Case in point: request Hitsville UK, you get London Calling. Request Safe European Home, you get London Calling. Request Straight To Hell, you either a) get London Calling or b) get excited because you think you're finally getting Straight To Hell until the beat kicks in and you realize it's just that overplayed M.I.A. song with the Clash sample.
And the Clash aren't the only victims of that failsafe technique - you can tell it's almost the end of the night when Love Will Tear Us Apart and the Beatles' Revolution come over the speakers.
I know it's Friday night and many people don't want to have to think, they just want to pay the cover charge, get drunk, and dance to the familiar. But others are looking for that moment when the DJ throws on a really killer song they've never heard before and are completely blown away. I KNOW these Mod Night DJ's have it in them to do that to me - I see them at the record fairs and wonder what little secrets they have hiding in their collections. Maybe we'll never find out. -

Halo is a very chill lounge and dance club that draws an older crowd that many of the Whyte Ave. bars. It's hip and stylin', and has a small dance floor where you can groove to techno beats from local and visiting djs. It has Mod Club Fridays featuring Brit-pop, Indie rock and new wave. I recently reserved a booth here for a friend's stagette. The owner was extremely accommodating and even put us on the guest list and gave us free cover. There are booths, pub-style tables, a bar and upper level lounge area with a great view of the dance floor. My only complaint is the floor is quite small. When it's packed, there's not much room to shake your bootie. Next door is the Red Star pub, so if you need a change of scene you can just pop over. It's fun to people watch here. There are lots of really hip dressers. You can get away with jeans and a tee or go glam if the mood strikes. Anything goes.
