I want to make sweet, sweet love to Half Price Books.

This is a great store. I've never sold any books or CDs to Half Price Books, but I have purchased books from there.

They have a great selection of titles. I really only poke around in the fiction section, but they have all types of books. They also sell CDs and DVDs.

For being used, I thought the condition of the books was very good. You could tell the books had been read, though probably only once. And since I usually put a lot of wear and tear on the books I read since I carry them around in my purse all day, it probably makes more sense for me to read used books since I'm going to beat them up anyway.

And of course, my favorite thing about Half Price Books is the price! Everything really is half-off. Like, a paperback book that cost $15 new would cost $7 at Half Price Books. You really can't beat that for gently used books.

I would definitely check this place out if you love owning books but don't want to spend an arm and a leg.

I love this place! All the books are half off any other store you go to. They don't necessarily have everything you might need in stock because most of the books are second hand items but they're in great condition regardless.

They also have some textbooks and encyclopedias for great prices. The staff is very helpful as well and are kind most of the time. I love this place!!! It also lets you sell your books :]

Great place, fun to hang out and browse, and awesome prices on everything.

It was also nice to sell all of my EX's stuff after we broke up!  The $150 I got for his books and DVD's made me feel much better.   It was a nice way to cleanse my house of his memories and make a few bucks at the same time.   :-)

Oh, moving. One of the few redeeming qualities of moving is that you end up purging a lot of stuff you didn't need.

Like my old textbooks from college.

We headed off to Half Price Books a few weeks back to sell some books we no longer had a use for. We brought in a big ass bag of books and walked out with $20.

Other than books, this place carried video game paraphernalia, calendars (DON'T FORGET THE KITTEN CALENDARS) and other miscellaneous items.

A nice find in the 'burbs.

Half Price Books is a giant castle of books, CDs and movies. Great popular and obscure titles and even better prices. Everything is like "Half Price".
Knowing that HPB buys your old books, dvds and cds I went in to sell some. I brought my giant bag into the buying area and waited for about 10 minutes for an evaluation. The buyer told me I would get about $70 for my stuff and I excepted. I took the voucher to the cashier and got my money and left HPB without buying a thing. I needed the money. I now know where to go when I am strapped for cash.

I like the idea of Half Price Books. Recycle, reuse, and reading. Whenever I have been in this place it has been relatively quiet, busy, and full of books. The selection of books I would say is actually pretty decent. They do have dvd's, vcr tapes, and cds as well.

I just sold them a good bit of books and dvd's. I was expecting a bit of a better price for the like new condition mix of books and dvd's I gave them (I might have got $10 or more at least on one of the dvd sets for one) but it did save me the work of putting it up on Amazon, Ebay or the like and the service was overall nice, helpful, and efficient. It took about ten or fifteen minutes for them to calculate the worth and you have to stay in the store while they do it...I would recommend this place.

I love Half Price Books!  Anytime I go to Half Price, I make sure I take my reading glasses (insert age joke here), pull up a stool and have plenty of time to browse.  They have a really good selection of used CD's (they also have new CDs) at great prices.  Now I know, this is the digital age and all, but why pay .99 per song, when I can go to Half Price and find CD's for as low as $1.00 that are full of songs I like...then I can just upload them!  Sometimes I'll find great multi-disc compilations at under $10, sometimes for $5 - SCORE!

Another bonus is that they sell toys...not just any toys, cool little collectible toys.. I found (and purchased) a really nice Speed Racer Racer X car, a Wonder Woman figure and have also seen other really cute items.  As for the books, I usually look for cookbooks, sometimes I will find something in the spiritual section (a la James Van Praagh).  I also buy journals from time to time as they have unique/cute graphic covers and are usually sold at really low prices.

This location is nearest to me, but anytime we are in the vicinity of any Half Price Books, we try to make it a point to stop by to try to find new music.  Ya never know what your gonna find!!

This is one of my all-time favorite bookstores! They have great prices, coupons, fairly nice staff, and it's usually not super crowded. The clearance section is my favorite -- books are between $1-3 and they don't just sell crap that you'd never want to read.

Also, they have awesome metal signs that I've adorned my kitchen with. :) I just wish there was one closer to Logan Square!

Half Price comes very close to being the perfect utilitarian used bookstore.  You pay used prices, but enjoy the physical shopping benefits of a chain--a clean, clearly labelled, well organized facility.  It's like the best of both worlds.  Plus, their staff are great.

I often come here when I am looking for a specific title.  Two of the last four times, I've found it.  That is one of the advantages of size and organization.  But effective table, aisle-end and shelf-top displays make it a great browsing experience, too.  I've made several interesting finds that way.  And you'll never spend too much either, even for new books.  Fiction is a strength, but they have many other well stocked sections.

Always check out the "Old and Interesting" cart:  like a little slice of that other kind of awesome used bookstore, the dim, creaky, crotchety-ownered basement space full of dusty hardcover treasures.  All of these items are priced between one and five dollars.  I have made some incredible discoveries on that cart, the greatest of which was a complete six-volume set of A Thousand Nights and a Night (aka The Arabian Nights) translated by Sir Richard Burton.  It was a 1962 reprinting of the 1934 Heritage Press edition.  A few years ago, I looked all over creation for a complete Burton Arabian Nights but had given up hope.  Imagine finding it here, at a store where these types of books aren't even their strength.  And the three tomes were only $3 apiece!  It just goes to show that you never know what you might find if you take a little extra time and effort to dig.

I haven't bought any CDs or DVDs, and selection on the games isn't nearly as broad as on the movies or books, but I always find at least one PC or old Xbox game for cheap whenever I want one.  Maybe it turns out to be a crappy game, but for five bucks, your risk is low.

Plus they buy.  I've only sold stuff once, but it seemed like a reasonable offer--$8 for six various books in good to very good condition.  I don't get rid of very many books, but perhaps I'll try them again to sell some magazines, DVDs, and video games.  And in the meantime I'll keep going back for those specific-book missions and occasional aimless browsing.

I love Half Price Books.  I can spend hours digging through the clearance vinyl records, used DVDs, and of course books.

As the name of the store suggests, all the books are half off the publisher's list price.  Most of the vinyl records are between $2 and $10, but the clearance records are all below $1, with many being a quarter.  There is no organization of these clearance records at all, but that's half the fun... dig in and see what surprises you can find.

Staff are always friendly and the store runs specials often, offering 50% off on special days, etc.

I love to read and I love to recycle. This place makes it perfect to do both, plus it is a very short drive from our place.

In the far back corner by the restrooms, they have a remarkable clearance area. This is one of the areas I first browse whenever I go here. you can find all kinds of books for $1-$3, which is a great deal in my humble opinion. They do have an excellent selection of books and the stock is constantly changing so it pays to frequent this place.

The staff here is always friendly and relatively quick. They do a good job of keeping the shelves organized and the place looking neat and tidy.

Every New Year's, I purge a bunch of my unwanted books, CDs, and magazines. It always feels so cleansing to get rid of excess stuff, and because I secretly live in fear of being a hoarder, I love to get rid of as much stuff as possible. That's what I get for watching a marathon of "Hoarders" on tv.

I had 4 big boxes of stuff to sell. As others have mentioned, they will buy your used stuff, but there's no real consistency with how much they will offer you. My feeling is just that I'm happy to unload my stuff.  Any amount is better than nothing and worth it to me, as long as it covers my minimal gas and travel time.

I got more than I expected for my stuff, so that was a pleasant surprise, and the employees were more cheerful this time than usual.

They have a ton of books, games, calendars, CDs, etc., at very reasonable prices, so you're sure to find something. SInce my goal was to purge and not binge, I was good and did not buy anything this time.

Last things first- Their dumpster is filled constantly with books in great shape that simply couldn't be sold or stocked. Translate- free books. As in books that cost nothing. If you halved their price, it would be half of nothing. That's a pretty good deal.

For slightly less amazing deals (but come on, two bucks for a book is still pretty damn good) you can actually walk inside and browse the towers of books. While I've yet to stumble across a mint first edition Salinger, I have found plenty of stuff that I've loved. The only economic downside to this store is that they are forcing me to spend precious capitol on more bookshelves. Maybe it's time to move out of my parents house so I have more room for books. See, now look, now I have to come up with rent money and bookshelf money, not to mention all the new expenses I'll be taking on- toilet paper money, toothpaste money, heat, gas, etc... Oh book.  Oh half-priced books. Oh free books.

Recently found them here in IL and was somewhat excited to find a place to purchase half-price books; Visited for the first time last week and picked up a few things; Was told that there would be 20% additional off for Memorial weekend - thought, "Great, I'll be able to pick up a few more things that I'd been looking at and save quite a bit of money."

Well, came back Memorial weekend and what did I find? - They'd raised the prices of those books to the point where even the 20% off still made it more expensive than last week; This is in reference to their hard-cover books as those have prices and the paperbacks are strictly 50% off the cover price.  I can't believe they actually did that - change the prices on their most popular hard-covers in anticipation of a "sale/holiday."  Bums...

I know the whole "take advantage of Memorial weekend shopping" is just business and all, but I find it a little disingenuous.

Selection at this location is also "not-that-great."

You can find Clinton's "My Life" for $2 in the clearance section.

    I LOVE this place.

I haven't sold any books back, but I hear you practically get next to nothing though.

When I get there, I go straight to the back corner where the clearance items are and browse. I almost never leave without buying a few things. The clearance items are like $1-3!

They also have computer software and movies too.

It's also organized fairly well in there and the staff is really nice.

I went to the store a few days ago, ended up spending almost an hour browsing.
    1. most CDs are $5.95. If you love 90s Rock, this place is for you. There are tons of CDs from the 90s Alternative era.
    2. A lot of books are overpriced. If you want literature, it's affordable. If you want books that are on the New York Best Seller's list now, they're still about $7-$8. Too much for a paperback, in my opinion.
    3. There are current magazines and some past issues. Most (past) magazines are between $1-$2
    4. They're open until 8 on Sunday.
    5. DVDs are overpriced. Way over priced.
    6.. They buy your stuff.

I will definitely come back, for CDs, literature, and old magazines.

You can sell books, dvds, vhs's, cd's, vinyls, the list goes on. But more importantly you can buy them here. It's pretty much like a Disc Replay but with more to offer category wise. If you're looking for a specific VHS or DVD you can't find here I would recommend you go to Disc Replay, there's one in Village Crossing so you won't have to go far.

If you ARE looking to sell here, (or at DR) you'll find that you won't be paid very much at all. In fact, you're probably better off selling your items online, but if you'd like to get instant cash this is a great place to go. I've found some awesome vinyls here, as well as a really cute calender that even though it was later in the year I still managed to get a huge kick out of (AND IT WAS ONLY A DOLLAR) and as a lover of inexpensive things, I was happy to shop here.

Sometimes you'll find old games as well as odds and ends. The staff is friendly but quiet (as I like it) and the store itself smells a bit funky, but it's forgiven.

I give 5 stars for Half price books. You save alot of money on books that costs alot in other book stores.

And you can find some interesting things not available in some stores.

They also have good selection of CD and DVD movies as well.

I also got rid of some books I don't need. And it helped me organize my books at home.

Five stars for the prices and selection, but minus two stars for the service.

I've been coming here since shortly after the store opened and a large portion of my book collection is from Half Price. Usually I pick up at least one or two of their regular "half price" items and about seven clearance items from that great corner in the back. Many of my books get resold right back to them. You won't make a profit, but the few extra dollars are handy and it helps clear some room on your shelves for new titles.

The staff there is, well, not so great. It's clearly a total drag for them to be there. I've been in retail for over ten years now myself and I will be the first to say that customers can be a pain and some days I just don't feel like doing the job... but it's my job and the customers (who are not, as some may think, always right) are why I get paid. Someone who is shopping in my store is there to purchase things, not to be treated like a burden. Half Price employees: you're in a bookstore, not across the street at Wal-Mart... stop the glares, the heavy sighs and learn to just say "hello".

So yes, stop in for the selection and the deals, don't bother asking for help, and say "hello" to your cashier, even though they likely won't respond.

What the heck, I have to admit I've had great luck with certain sections of this store over the last few months. Especially when it comes to their magazine and clearance sections.

I'll still say the same as I did on my original review about their non-PC video game offerings as my original review(prefering GameStop or Disc Replay), and that I'm still trying to crack what they pay the most for when it comes to used items. Finally, I'll agree with others that the staff has gotten better as of late. Not giving it a true 5 stars, but it's improved enough for me as of late that I'm rounding up.

One Man's Junk is Another Man's Treasure!

If you're looking to sell a large quantity of books, DVDs, CDS and even VHS tapes, this is a good place worth checking out.

The return isn't the greatest, but it's not bad either if you're too impatient like me and don't want to deal with selling & shipping on ebay.

There's a separate counter opposite the register where employees do nothing but prepare quotes for those looking to sell. You do have to stay in the store while your quote is getting prepared. I've sold more than 2 boxes at a time 3 times now and I've never waited for longer than 20 minutes.

    Here's how I did:

    * 3 boxes of books - $60

    * 1 box of CDs and 1 box of VHS tapes - $66 for the CDs. $6 for the VHS tapes.

    * 1 box of CDs and 1 box of VHS tapes - $70 for the CDs, $6 for the VHS tapes.

As you can see, you get near nothing for the VHS tapes (which they'll tell you upfront).

If you want to rock a garage sale this summer, you'd get more by selling CDs for $1 each, and VHS tapes for 50 cents a piece. I'm preparing to move and just wanted to recycle this stuff.

The coolest part? They take EVERYTHING you bring to sell. They do not pick and choose what they want to buy and send you home with crap you don't really want.

The bookstore is lovely. They have a great selection of cards, calendars, journals and a great selection of kids books. My favorite part is looking through their DVD overstock clearance selection. Pretty recent movies all priced at $3. It's cheaper than renting at Blockbuster!

One of the ongoing processes in my life is decluttering.  For reasons too complicated to go into now, four years ago I was left to deal with almost two hundred and fifty years worth of collections and clutter, and  when I moved from a much larger space into my current digs, even the stuff I felt I could find space for proved to be too much.  And so, I've been paying regular visits to HPB with, literally, dozens of boxes of books and other media.

I'm not going to try to tell you that they pay well for your used books because I've found that the average is about $1 per volume or less.  If you're selling, go in there with the understanding that they're doing for you what you don't have the time or energy to do for yourself, and you'll feel a whole lot better about being told "Twenty dollars" for two boxes of books.

If you're buying, the selection is almost wholly recent publications.  You will rarely find a book more than 5 years old there, which means that even at half price or less, they're not going to compete with some of the folks who sell on http://amazon.com for a penny a book (They make up for it on shipping.)  But there's a lot to be said for browsing in a bookstore amongst like-minded people; it's what keeps me going to local bookstores when I could more easily and economically order online.

In addition to books you'll also find CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, audio books, computer software, video games and a lot of other miscellaneous stuff that's kind of fun to poke through.  There's a bargain corner way in the back, and while the place is always jumping (A great sign, IMO) you can almost always find a place to sit down and look at a book.

I almost never go in there without selling something and buying something else, which I find very satisfying.  It makes me feel as if I belong to some sort of brother/sisterhood of The Book.  And the staff is so pleasant, so casual and yet competent that they reinforce that feeling.  I walk in there and feel at home.  How many bookstores can you say that about these days?

The only thing wrong with it is that there's no coffee house within walking distance.  And if you're a book person, you probably want to sit down and pore over your books almost as soon as you buy them.  Or you want somewhere to go to talk about books with that person you met in the store over an old Nero Wolfe mystery.  Or you met an old friend there and want to go someplace to sit down and catch up.  Books and coffee, a natural combination.

Not that it's HPB's fault.  I'm just sayin'.

What I like about Half Price Books is that you can really find some hidden gems. For example, on my first trip there, I found an original Balderdash board game for less than $5. I was so excited!!!

I've also sold a few of my DVDs and books. Got $25. Not a ton of money, but better than letting them take up space and collect dust.

It's worth at least one trip. You won't be disappointed if you are into books or movies! They have some Blu Ray discs but mainly have DVDs and even some VHS sets.

Best part about Half Price Books is that they have a solid selection of True Crime books for me to pretend to read while I'm staring at women. Nothing beats taking cover behind a worn copy of "Zodiac" or "The Hillside Strangler" or "The Night Stalker" while making an innocent person feel uncomfortable.

As for the shopping, it's like any used bookstore - hit or miss. I got a  Smiths CD there for 9 bucks. That was cool. I bought a bunch of books about Turkey and Russia on the cheap there, too. The fiction/literature section is really big. I scored a copy of Chaim Potok's "The Book of Lights" in hardcover for maybe 6 bucks. It's worth a visit every two weeks.

I usually have a wonderful experience here and buy far much more than I intended to when I walked into the place.  If you like a certain author that has been around for a while, this should be your first stop.  Also, they have an aisle of all sorts of gift-type things.  Note cards, journals, games, etc.  I have gotten some very unique gifts in that aisle!!
When selling, they are totally inconsistent (and I know this depends on what you're selling).  They do go through your stuff relatively quick and you can browse while waiting.
Staff has always been great except one dude - I think he has been there since they opened this location. He is a mid-to late-30's Asian man and a real jag.  EVERY time I am in there and deal with him, he is rude (once to the point where I was embarassed.......for him).  I don't know what it is, but it has happened multiple times.
All in all though, great place.

have a good selection of kids books (most in great condition) and kids DVDs.Although they sell a lot of used books, the place doesn't have that musty smell and all, that places which sell used books can have.Be sure to come in around Dec. to get their free calendar that has coupons for every month, so you can save even more on your purchases. It's a fun place to just come in and check out, since you never know what kind of stuff they're going to get next.

Not a place for looking for a specific title so much as a wonderful spot to pick up adult and children's books at rock bottom prices.  We just "discovered" this store recently and like the other reviewers, we are hooked.  Very pleasant staff, too.

In case you have trouble finding it, it's in the Village Crossing Shopping Plaza near Dick's Sporting Goods.

This place is my nirvana. I have  never come in here and not found the book I'm looking for.  Whether it's a fairly new release, something older, or even something entirely obscure, I've found it here.  Prices are pretty reasonable, and if you sell things back, you can usually get your money's worth.  The $1 rack often has some great choices.

Great selection of cookbooks, which was super helpful when I was ordered onto a low cholesterol diet.  The staff is either really friendly or abrupt, there does not seem to be an in between. When I can't find something locally, I will come here. It's worth the drive.

heading off to India and needed some Hindi translation books so that I wouldn't be completely lost. was going to B&N but since i was in the area I decided to stop in and to check out HPB and they had exactly what I needed for...HALF the price of what I was going to pay. AWESOME deals on an audio+book and a "learn hindi" book...a great deal!!

My sister told me about this place and I decided to give it a try.  We brought in books, cd's, VHS/DVD movies and video games and gear.  They bought it all at a fair price! The best part is that unlike those places that will just take the best of your stuff and make you haul home the rest, HPB took it all so we went home with empty bags and cash!
It was pretty busy on a weekend so we had to wander around the store for almost an hour while they priced our haul.  They seemed to have a great selection and provided comfy chairs to hang out in.  As for the selection-they didn't have the two items I was hoping for but the selection seemed decent-especially for kids books and self help items.  You could really save some money.
If you're looking to make money on selling or save money on buying-this is the place!

I've shopped here a bunch of times.  Usually a good selection of just about any genre you're looking for.  Really found some good deals in their cookbook section, well below half price.   Fiction novels have a decent selection and there's pretty good turnover.

Note that your trade-in's (books, DVDs, CDs, etc.) yield next to nothing, my first and last time I got something less than $0.50 per item in credit.  Ever since, I just donate to Salvation Army and take the tax break.

The staff is usually friendly and helpful.

A place for real book nerds, which is good if you are one.  Also will find some human oddities tottering about the place, the types profiled on one of those Hoarder programs.  Worthwhile.

Really great concept, execution and location.  I first discovered this chain in my teeny hometown and was very excited to see one here in Chicagoland.
I appreciate the consistency between stores.  Items are easy to find, well organized, and the staff is super nice.  They have a great selection that seems to change frequently. I ALWAYS buy lots of books when I stop by.
Check the front by the cash registers for deals on electronic thingys you might need- Ipod power cords, headphones, book lights etc., usually on sale for just a couple bucks.

I never miss the clearance section, the magazine section and the $1-$3 book section.  Obviously my library is overflowing!  The best part is that I can get rid of my unwanted books here too and they always take everything!

Some books are older, some have been read before. All are in good shape, and many quality hard covered reference books for under $10.
They buy your old books, so no more listing things with e-bay & shipping them for $1.00.
The only problem is that because the books are so cheap, we wind up spending the same amount on books, but leave with an arm load.

I can spend hours looking around Half Price Books, and no matter how often I go, I will find something interesting. They have such a great selection that is always changing. You really never know what you will find. I am a big comic book reader and I always find good deals on back issues. They also have great prices on DVD's, music (CD's and LP's), and even board games.

I definitely recommend signing up for their email newsletter as well. You get awesome coupons in the mail and notified when they have their big sales (usually around holidays, everything in the store is 20% off).

I had alot of books. I needed to purge. So I brought at least 4 boxes of my former kickass books over to see I could get.

Very nice spacious browsing space. You drop off your books at the counter, and while they take inventory to generate an estimate, the store is your "waiting room," and you go back to the counter when they page you.

They only gave me about 10 bucks, but I needed to purge. I had alot of books.

So the name of the store basically tells you what you can find here.... books for half the price! They have a great selection of books here.. and definitely go check out the clearance section where you can find books are $1-$3., including former bestsellers that they have too many copies of and just need to get rid of.

You can sell your books here too, but although they don't give much, its still great to get rid of the books you never plan to read again.  I did not want to deal with selling on ebay and it felt like a waste to just toss them so I was super happy when I remembered that this place lets you sell your books too!  I needed to get rid of all these books I've had since my teeny bopper days  (and no longer care to have to take up precious storage space) and dropped off 2 huge bags and got about 20 bucks (not that much I guess) but I was able to get a few books I've been wanting to read with that money so it worked out great!
