Review from Michael P.
Burnaby, BC
As much as I love living in the Burnaby Heights, it is safe for me to say that the diversity in cuisines are limited.
When I first saw the 'open' sign on Hakkaku's window, I was excited because there are no other ramen places in this area. The first three attempts I made to eat here were a failure. Twice because they close between 3-5pm and I was off school around 4pm, and the third because they were on vacation. Fourth attempt was certainly the charm in my case.
Their ramen selection was straight forward. Select your soup base and you'll be served the corresponding toppings listed on the menu. They do, however, offer the option of 'rich' or 'regular' soup, the shoulder or belly of Japanese-style pork (chashu), and extra noodles (if requested).
The noodles were the typical ramen-style egg noodles with the generic toppings (onion, vegetables, corn, egg, etc.). In Japan, the soup base is the most important aspect of any bowl of ramen - this is what sets apart the good from the bad. Hakkaku failed to deliver a broth to satisfy my ramen expectation. More specifically, it lacked flavour and was almost bland with pieces of pork fat floating on top.
Their gyozas, however, were pan fried to perfection.
I wouldn't mind returning to Hakkaku because it's convenient, but if I wanted an authentic bowl of ramen, I'd make my way downtown or to West Broadway.
Parking is available on the street at certain hours and also along the side streets.
