This review might bite. It might bite me in the butt. Because after I complete this review for Miranda's, I might never be able to get an appointment with her.

    *sigh*

Yes. She is THAT good. That I have to recommend her with 5 stars despite my selfish desire to keep her to myself. Because she is amazing and literally saved my scalp.

    *

I can be as crunchy granola as the next fabulous knee-high-socks-and-engineer-boot-wearing Gen Xer. But when it comes to my beauty, particularly my hair, I don't compromise a thing. I enhance my color and have to have hair that gets me compliments *all the time*. Compliments for hair that I simply tousle with my fingers before leaving the house.

But (dum dum DAH!) a few years ago, I developed an allergy to typical hair salon coloring. Yes, that's right: an allergic reaction--to my hair.

Have you ever had hives. On your flipping scalp?! An itch that won't stop?!! Under the hair on your head?!!!

UGH. It was a serious nightmare. One that I endured repeatedly for vanity. But no more.

I found Miranda. She uses all organic products but even more astoundingly, she uses a hair color that works without reactivity even on chemical sensitives like me. Miranda says that it is the brand that hospitals recommend to patients that come in for extreme allergic reactions to hair dye.

And OMG (yeah, I just wrote O.M.G.), she can cut hair. She can color AND she can cut. My cute 30s era inspired hair-do with its avant garde flair looks good for 6 weeks.

    6+ weeks!

And I get compliments on my cut and color up to the day I go in to have her style my hair again. Every time.

Reasonably priced. Funky space in the basement of her home. It's a family centric location and a one-woman show-- please don't be a jerk if you experience random delays caused by other clients.

So: now you know. And I swear I will fight you with knives in order to get in to see her.

    (kidding!

    sorta.)

Miranda employs an eco-conscious work ethic and maintains the highest quality products that give her customers long lasting, beautiful and - most importantly - healthy hair. I could not have been happier with my time spent at Miranda's!

Lovely Miranda is so friendly, she takes you just how you are.  No snooty salon vibe here.  She listens well, but somehow also manages to read between the lines and figure out what you *really* want.  And she delivers:  she seems to know intuitively what will work for you and your hair type.  It's a talent, and a rare one at that.

I found Miranda through the many incredible reviews on livejournal (do people still use it?!) over 5 years ago. I haven't been to anyone since. In fact, i refuse! I went from a very conservative cut to cutting my incredibly long hair into an asymmetrical buzz cut and fully colouring my entire head of hair into any colour imaginable. Miranda has never disappointed me, and given me everything I had asked. It's come to the point where I would show up, tell her what colour I'd like my hair to be and a vague description of what I'd like and give her full creative reign. Over the years, I've received so many compliments on my hair all thanks to Miranda!!

Not only is Miranda a master at her hair cutting and colour art, she is a wonderful and loving woman! You can see that she's a genuine, amazingly environmentally friendly and an all around great lady.

You haven't experienced a great cut and colour until you've had Miranda. Just go to her, you'll never regret it! Period.

Miranda HAS moved... so don't do what I did and go bang on the door of 67A  Claremont Street. It was the middle of the day, so there was nobody home, but this definitely contributed to my confusion. Her new place is 2 minutes away, so it's not a big deal.

I have an ingrained fear of bad haircuts, even though I've seen pretty much the same stylist in Calgary for about 12+ years. So as many a time before, I scoured Yelp in search of a hair saviour. Yes! Mirandasaviour! I have to add, what really made my mind up was checking out her Flickr gallery link (even though many pics are old) from her website. Serious talent.

Usually I'm not too into the organic THING, but I figure if a hairstylist believes it's better not to slather chemicals onto my head, it may be wise not to.

Whiz-bang-snippy-snippy-DONE. And I had perfect hair. I should add that I'm horrible at explaining what I want, too. Incredibly vague. 'Well... I have thin hair so I would like layers... and I want to keep most of the length... and I want bangs. Yep.' Apparently this is enough to yield an awesome cut.

If I wanted colour, she would be my go-to gal, also.

    Seriously, what gives?

How the hell does she do it?

I'm used to spending hours in a salon.  In Tokyo I once spent SIX hours getting my hair done (to be fair it was a cut, low lites, high lites, and straight perm).

I came to Miranda because my hair had literally grown into a Jew-fro over night (or so it felt like that).  She gives it a few snip snips, puts me under the dryer, and I walk out with PERFECT hair.

And, even more importantly than the day of hair is that when I washed it and styled* it myself, it looked great.  I freakin' love Miranda!

    -----------
*by styled I mean spritzed some leave in conditioner and curl stuff and watched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels while eating 1.5 pounds of baby carrots.  It's a shame no one will share my hair glory.

Miranda is just awesome. She works out of her home, but it's a really great space, set up just like any salon, only with a lot less people (so it's nice and cozy!). Sure, you might run into her husband, cat or children, but that just makes it more fun in my opinion.

Her entire salon is eco-friendly and vegan-friendly. She offers 'regular' hair dye/highlights/etc as well as more fun colors like hot pink, deep purple, and bright blue. And she rocks at figuring out what cuts might look good on you. I've gone a few times not knowing what the heck I wanted and walked out with a fabulous cut which I immediately got multiple 'your hair looks great!' comments from strangers on the street.

Seriously, give her a call or email, she's great!

I stumbled on to the miracle that is Miranda through the Toronto Livejournal community and they have rarely steered me wrong. Miranda is just awesome.

I've had too many run ins with stylists that think they know best and ignore what I ask for or let me do something ridiculous or ignore what I ask for and do something ridiculous without telling me. Miranda is completely different. She listens, advises, and makes whatever you ask for look awesome.

For example, I came to her one time after a spur of the moment mistake cut somewhere else and said "they cut all the edginess out" - she knew what I meant, and 15 minutes later I walked out with edginess restored and a strong resolve never to stray again.

One day, when I'm more adventurous and have a less conservative job, I might just let her put some pink or purple streaks in my hair. I've seen her colour work on other clients and it's the most vibrant rainbow-type colours I've ever seen. Miranda really knows her stuff. When I was having a weird scalp issue, she sat down with me to figure out what was causing it and gave me a few products to help me out and suggested a bunch of things that helped me resolve it.

To top it off, Miranda's just a pretty cool person. Be aware that her hair studio is in her basement and you may encounter her cat, dog, and/or children during your visit. And if any of those things freak you out, get over it, because she's worth it.

I love Miranda. She is a great hairstylist and an all-round great person. She works out of her home salon, though she might be moving. She is also  very concerned about natural products and being eco-friendly. One more vote for Miranda!
