So far, so good.
For reasons that may or may not include laziness, I hardly venture down this stretch of Main.
But after my dinner stop here for a girls' gab session, I think I'm well on my way to becoming a creature of Habit!
Right off the bat, I was charmed by its unpretentious vintage ambiance. Major brownie pts.
Menu features comfort food fare with Oceanwise & locally sourced ingredients. No reinventing the wheel here.
After much indecision, we all ordered the same thing. Either great minds think alike or I have equally lazy friends.
Habit burger ($13):
caramelized onions on thick-cut bacon on behemoth beef patty. A titanic flanked by a sea of delicious fries to boot. Skinny jeans beware.

YOU RUINED MY BIRTHDAY!!
Okay so it's not as dramatic as it sounds but I'm still a little irritated 4 months later. We arrived at 215 (Brunch is till 230!) and were too late for brunch so they gave us the lunch menu. Wow, what non interesting choices of food!! yawnnnn. It was basically tapas but pricey and half the amount. Don't come here for lunch, it's not the place to be.
However, THE BRUNCH here is amazing even though it doesn't leave you full- I am in love with their brunch menu. Try their perogies, they are to die for! The staff is a bit rude, seems like they don't want to be there. Makes me want to do their job, maybe they'll even crack a smile. I even had to get up and grab the coffee pot because we'd been waiting there with no one coming around for 15 mins, as our waitress sat the behind the bar. -

Came here for a friend's birthday dinner and it is indeed unpretentious place but there is nothing on the menu that calls me. The price just doesn't justify it.. they charge $7 for a slice of strawberry and rhubarb pie. I had carrot and brie pierogies, and they are OK. Next door - Cascade is where I would go next time.

First off I've only had brunch here and the food is decent but the service is not so much. We were seated promptly but no one came to get our drink order in. After about 10mins we flagged down one of the servers for a coffee and tea. Then 'our' server came and asked us what we wanted. Throughout the whole meal we kept having to ask for coffee and water refills because our server barely checked up on us even though she passed by our table constantly. And even after asking, she would forget and we'd have to ask again a few minutes later. It really wasn't that busy considering there were 3 of them on the floor to maybe 10 tables seated? I didn't end up tipping her well although I did tip, and she gave me a really bad look and a sarcastic thank-you. Maybe you should try doing your job better next time and I will recognize it, if there will even be a next time.

Came here for weekend brunch and LOVED IT - big chunky seasoned potatoes, fresh flavourful ingredients. My mouth is watering as I'm writing this. With food this good, and affordable prices, I'm surprised there wasn't a lineup out the door.

Don't come for the service, which is hit or miss. Food is decent and the decor is nice. I had a great experience the first time and then came back for the last time for brunch. Burnt toast, children running around and inattentive staff. Spend your money elsewhere.

We go here for dinner about once or twice a month, and always recommend Habit to friends. Their food is savoury, delicious, and can be considered comfort-food but never too heavy. They have an incredible whiskey list, and their wines and beers are well-chosen too. Our favourites are the beet salad, tuna casserole (with seared albacore tuna on top, so good), flat bread, and mussels.
Why the four stars instead of five? They change their menu quite frequently so our favourites often end up changed, and sometimes not for the better (in our opinion) - so we get cranky...BUT, we always come back and are always willing to try something new because we know this restaurant is great.
Their brunch is very good too, though $4 orange juice is a bit pricey. -

Oooh, i'm torn. 4 or 5 stars?
This cozy little establishment would be a great place for a date. Or, as I did, a place to catch up with a couple lovely ladies.
When a menu, though fairly small as it was, has me saying aloud, "ooh, I want to try that... no wait, that.... ooooh, that looks good, too, " then I know I may have to make a return visit. When the ordered food turns out to be pretty damn delicious, then I know for sure I will be coming back. Our table has the tuna salad, the special clam pasta and the gnocchi. We each tried a bit of each other's. And it was all very enjoyable. I really want some more of that gnocchi. So tender.
With very reasonable prices for such a trendy neighbourhood, I wasn't worried about having to count out pennies to pay for my meal, and managed to get dinner plus a couple glasses of wine for under $30 with tax and tip.
We had a server with a sweet attitude. She was helpful, chatty (but not overly so) and pleasant. She also looked awesome and like she could kick my ass at the same time. She was a refreshing change from the many cookie cutter waitresses out there. -

Three words...beer/whiskey specials!!!!
Whoa! What a great idea! Except when you get it you keep thinking you are having one drink when indeed you are having two. So 2 rounds really equals 4 drinks...which is great also! Oh, except it's monday, and I wasn't really planning on drinking tonight...oh but what fun we are having!! And the server is awesome and thinks i'm like 10 years younger than i am...i love him! Oh it's 11pm now and i am buzzed. Didn't mean to do that. But I love everyone!!!! It's fun at Habit with beer/whiskey specials!!

Pleasantly surprised with this place. Came here because many other options were closed on Easter Sunday.
For the whiskey lovers, this place is fantastic. They've got a full page of whiskeys for you to choose from. For people who love the beer, they've got a decent selection as well, but not as much as guilt & co. After that, the alcohol selection dwindles. This definitely isn't a wine place. the food is good and their desserts were delicious. They were very accommodating to our party of 8. It wasn't noisy and we were comfortable the whole evening. Their shoestring fries are good. The winter spice creme brulee was so yummy!
Overall a decent place on the Main strip.Listed in: 30 Day Review Challenge

Dropped into Habit with one other after a long...long...long day of work. The lights are dim and the ambiance is cozy. Given that it was later in the night, we scored a nice big, comfy booth table, which was a truly welcome change from the hard chair I had been perched on before arriving.
Their special of the day was a perogie plate, the perogies being potato & caramelized onion, served with braised cabbage, roasted cauliflower, and a chive sour cream. A side of sausage, for those meat inclined, is optional. We ordered the special in lieu of the regular carrot and brie perogies, as well as an order of the beet salad. I'm only just now getting into beets, and I'm trying to make up for many years of a beetless life. Besides, the beet salad had goat cheese, and everything is better with goat cheese.
Habit offers a fantastic Beer & Whiskey special, which I reluctantly passed on to order a glass of wine. They have a long list of Canadian whiskys, a varied beer selection, decent list of wines, and a handful of cocktail options.
The service was a strange combination of helpful but indifferent, which I didn't mind. Food and drinks came out a touch on the slow side, especially given the relative lack of diners. The food was good when it did come out, although they were a bit heavy-handed with the dressing on the salad. I'd say I'm a fan of their menu - it offers enough variety that non-meat eaters are not relegated to eating the one "token" vegetarian item, and many of the items are conducive to sharing. Would return!Listed in: Dates are Great

Just got back from Habit tonight with a few friends.
Kudos to our server! She was amazing, friendly and for that I say I would come back. Plus honestly, I love their lamp shades and their cozy, warm and interesting decor. With Glowing Red Mounted Plastic Deer head on the wall to the water colour dog painting, that is oddly familiar of psychiatric what-does-this-look-like ink blots, and the dark brown banquette seating, it can definitely be a great place to meet with friends, chill on their outdoor seating, or après dinner time dinner.
So why did I don this place with 3 stars? well like I said, Server was awesome, food was lacking. I ordered the Tomato Salad, and descriptively sounded awesome, panko breaded goat cheese, mixed greens, tomatoes and radishes; side fries and my friends got the burger that is a harmonized patty of beef and pork and bacon, with generous onion serving - it seemed to have the makings of a beautiful simple dish. Unfortunately tonight, it seemed that seasoning was off.
My salad was overdressed, my fries were over salted. I took to wiping the salt off, which sucks, but i wanted to keep my throat from drying up from the salt.
So although I'm writing to you about it, it was either an off day or it was just salty as all heck all the time. So that extra star was purely for the server, who was witty and fun, and overall the atmosphere seemed pretty awesome to just drink and chill. They had a shot and a beer special for the low price of $8! -

I love Habit. No fancy words needed, no literary flourishes, I just love it. If it was a man, I would marry it.
Smoked seared albacore tuna with sesame dressing = heaven on earth.
Burger with bacon and blue cheese = I'm in VIP heaven on earth.
Their charming staff won my heart with their sense of humour and giggles. Their low lighting, cosy leather booths and loungey feel made me want to take a date here and spend all night feeding them poutine, oysters and lamb brochettes. This is Canadian comfort food at its finest. -
Review from Trudi C.
Me and the boyfriend managed to snag the last table in here on a busy Friday evening, woo hoo! We'd been meaning to try this for ages, and with no definite plan, why not? I was immediately struck at how loud it was in there - sitting next to my boyfriend, we could barely hear each other over the noise of chatter and music. Everyone was having a good time in there, which means they were all extra loud ;)
A ton of drinks, though none that really appealed to me (perhaps as I like everything to be super sweet). Had a nice glass of Merlot though. For dinner, I had the butternut gnocchi with asparagus and a small salad, which was delicious, but I was starving at the time, and so not enough. I am a bit of a pig ;)
So it seems cool, will prob try out again at some point. -
Review from George H.
I really enjoy this place. It has good food, great ambiance, reasonable brunches, patio space, and best of all... cheap drinks! Their daily beer & whiskey special is my go to choice, whatever the beer and whiskey. The two just go so well together!
Their pulled pork poutine is pretty great cuz they use skinny fries which allows for more crispy exteriors then thicker cut fries. Also their gravy is quite spectacular.
I hope that they start to open later but I guess that would mean they would be in competition with their sister bar right beside them: Cascade. -
Review from Barry M.
Couldn't think of a think to improve. The perogies were delicious (almost a meal to themselves), and the mac and cheese was surprisingly good.
And they had a whisky that tasted like vanilla and chocolate. -

As a Portland resident, we sought a neighborhood that would mimic the neighborhood we live in. We definitely found "The Pearl" of Vancouver (Yaletown). Yawn. Overpriced, generic, trendy, yuppy.
We also did some browsing on Main St, where we stumbled upon Habit.
Habit just might be located on the "Hawthorne" of Vancouver; this trendy little brunch bar (is that a thing?!) held up pretty well against my local places. They strive to keep it local. My food (the BLTA) was outstanding, the best meal of the trip, hands down. I don't mind trendy or even pricey if it's for the right reasons. You've got to do it up right, woo me away from my money.
I was enticed by the Mimosa Bento where you could create your own cocktail at your table.
This place was really cool. Outside seating was an unconventional arrangement, meters abounded nearby and it was neat you could pay the parking by phone with your Visa. Effortless, delicious dining.
Three words: trendy, ironic, "bar-unch" (yup, that just happened.) -

Habit is my favourite breakfast spot on Main.
This is a lazy review, but just trust me. They serve quality coffee from JJ Bean and my mouth waters at the thought of their eggs benedict with avocado and back bacon. The breakfast potatoes also have a unique and explosive flavour.
Just don't come here if you have somewhere to be after. Seriously, this place is sloooowwww. I question if the cook has to wait for the chicken to first lay eggs because I don't understand how it can take that long to fry up a breakfast. -

Perhaps the most amusing part is we were treated with a helping of good waitress bad waitress - too brilliant to be orchestrated but consider this: Have a grumpy passive aggressive server seat you, take your drink orders and leave you to rot. THEN, send over a nice, smiley love to tell you that oops! There was some confusion but you're in HER section. She's Mary Poppins next to sour puss and her tip skyrockets. That or they have some adorable sweetheart servers and at least one grouch (both times we were served by darlings). Hot sauce, yes. Milk replacements and veggie friendly options, yes. Tasty tasty meat options, yes.

My friend and I headed over here on Tuesday night for Music Bingo (I've never played and I've been curious for a while). Unfortunately, not enough people showed up to actually play Music Bingo (this is bound to happen when it's a lovely sunny day outside), but to make up for it, they gave us a free drink and a complimentary (and hilarious) mug, which I thought was a lovely gesture. Heads up, the music bingo cards cost $1 a piece. I didn't notice this on the website, so if you ever head over here for music bingo, bring some loonies.
Service was excellent and the food was very good (I had the Habit Burger and the Beer and Whiskey special). Lots of interesting drink specials (they have cocktails in a bento box that you then assemble and shake yourself) and the poutine looked very appealing.
It was more of a family joint than I was expecting - not exactly a bar scene. Great for double dates or a casual night out. -

I like Habit and the sister restaurants, but service is not near average. I went several time just after reopening after the fire and then not for awhile. Last Friday was maybe my last time, 6 people arriving 5 minutes apart (3 then 2 then me) me last and nobody had drinks when I arrived, then 15 minutes later nobody had drinks and I flagged down server and ordered a glass of wine, then the others drinks arrived after 10 more minutes, mine followed 10 minutes later, this place is small and had 3 servers wandering around. When my wine arrived we ordered appies and dinner (we were not letting the server leave without the whole order) most also ordered a second cocktail. We had lively conversation for 20-30 minutes a drink would show up then another then the server apologized for the slow kitchen service, 20 minutes later everything arrived appies and mains and the finial drinks. Then the server came over and offered another drink for free for the slow service, well everybody was at their limit so nobody ordered another drink, nice gesture wrong time, plus nobody wanted to see how long it would take. On a walk past the kitchen I saw 4-5 working away so it wasn't short of staff and there was bartender, so short of being managed or not managed from next door they have a problem.
Now the food OK, my mussels were very good (sort of), the ones that opened were very good, I peeked into the 30% that didn't open and they had been dead before cooking, that's why if it doesn't open don't open and eat it, they had mixed fresh stock with old dead stock or were being ripped off by their supplier and are not smart enough to know, or were ripping me of, at that point we paid including a small tip and left. I won't be going back. -

Squash Gnocchi, steak frites, Carrot Brie Perogies and Mushroom soup. A pint of beer from the tap and it all made for a very good solid meal.
I loved my vegetarian dishes. The Kale was something I could eat alot of and the gnocchi was yummy. The Perogies (more carbs, uggggh) was worth the try. Unfortunately the one stuck on the bottom got all squished out, but the flavours were quite delish and subtle. Loved the tender cooked sweet onions.
Steak Frites, wasn't my dish, but it was ordered and considered by that individual as so so but better then average.
For me, the service was friendly and well spaced and we arrived there before the rush. So I think we were lucky in that sense.
The poor bloke next to me was one of those guys who only eats his meat hard like shoe leather. He complained that his burger was too pink, but interestingly the whole patty was pink, the way it was marinated or something and he had it cookded longer and it was still pink. I guess the burgers come like that. I wanted to ask him to just give it up and let me eat it.
It looked really good.
I would have to try it next time, next visit to the Habit and make one of that!
This was was a welcome scenario for us coming from Richmond.
It felt hip and trendy and had cool viibes.
3.5 stars, very very good. -

They also have an awesome deal on the beer and whiskey special.
Just go there for the lounge atmosphere to chill and enjoy. But don't expect great service as some servers can even have a bit of an attitude but it's all good for me. I can totally have fun with the servers with attitude and even crack some good jokes.
Enjoyed the place and would go back again for the beer and whiskey special! -

Inattentive service is not a good habit for a service establishment to have. IMO the service at Habit has not improved one iota since my last visit. In fact, it may just have gotten worse.
We wandered over whilst waiting on our table @ Cafeteria. It was still nice out so we decided to sit outside on the patio and people watch. After being sat with menus and greeted by our server we waited. And waited. And waited. In fact, we waited so long that I almost got up and left (a girl can't wait THAT long for a beverage). More waiting was involved for Round #2 and even more waiting for the cheque and oh mother help me! for the change.
That's an awful lot of waiting. Next time, I'll take my business elsewhere and have THEM wait on ME there.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

My friend ordered the same thing--the burger--and we both loved it. Four thumbs up. Bacon, melted cheddar, mound of fries with aioli. Super-yum.
I know our fickle town seems to have gone off Habit, and others have posted some pretty lukewarm reviews, but let's just remember. This is a fickle town where restaurants are concerned, very much into flavour-of-the-month. And everyone wants to be a food critic. -

I'm really curious why this place doesn't get better reviews.
I've been going to this place since it opened- it's an old favourite for a small group of friends.
This is kinda the epitome of a double date sorta place. Intimate bench seating sorta style, dimly lit, small share plates and divine desserts. Creme Brulee is a MUST here.
The food is SO good that I won't frown upon ordering the perogies (I'm one of those kinda girls- I hate ordering things I think I can make easily at home)- but believe me- there's nothing here that is bad.
the ambience is kinda interesting-ikea. The walls: I had to touch them and see what they were all about the first time I came here. haha..you should try too.
Everything is SO cozy that I could lounge here for hours on end with good conversation
The service is also gracious and excellent and I love just chatting it up with the awesome staff.
(PS: This place really does only deserve a solid 4/5, but I feel like I have to overcompensate for the lack of stars.. I'm not quite sure how you could ever rate this place less than 4 stars unless you just didnt' understand the "HABIT concept" of share a-la-carte plates) -

Habit is back with a vengeance! Not sure when this restaurant re-opened but we met some friends there after dinner about 2 weeks ago. It was after 9pm - but there were still people waiting for tables. Luckily our party of people snagged a semi-circle booth earlier on. Didn't have any food as we had dinner earlier on. Food looked good; menu has changed a bit since it was last opened - i don't remember seeing the Moroccan Spiced Wings (sniff sniff).
Nevertheless, we did enjoy a couple of adult beverages. They had a fresh sheet with featured cocktails. I order the Tequila Sunrise and was presented with a mini tray - a martini shaker, and shots of all the ingredients and instructions. It was a DIY cocktail! How cute!
Had great fun! Would definitely go back to try the new menuListed in: The Good Customer's Review

Situated along the Main, Habit Lounge is the perfect neighbourhood watering hole. The place has a cool, rustic-feel: elk and deer graphics decorate the walls; wooden booths and benches line the front windows and walls; and soft, moonlight-like lamps hang from the ceiling. While distinctly modern, the strong outdoors-y theme is reminiscent of a friend's parents' basement rec room--you know, the kind where the focal point was the television with the aluminum foil served as a makeshift antenna. All that's missing is the bad, seventies-style carpet.
The food here is generally quite good, too, and reasonably priced. Served tapas-style, this place is best visited with a few friends in order to properly sample the eclectic menu. Heavy emphasis is placed on using organic products and humanely raised meat. Italian, Southeast Asian, Indian and Mediterranean flavours are sprinkled across the menu, giving the place a very international slant. -

Sad times. I read that Habit had updated their menu to allow for a tofu substitution on all of their egg breakfast dishes, but believe it or not, they STILL don't have anything vegan! The potatoes they serve with their breakfasts have milk in them, and there was no other option they could give us. There was literally nothing I could eat at this restaurant.

I've been for lunch twice now and I will go back again. I think it's great! The first time I had their tuna casserole which was delicious with mushrooms, asparagus & parmesan panko crust. The ahi tuna was sliced and on top. My sister had the carrot/brie perogies and they were also great served with a nice pile of carmelized onions. She thought they tasted like sweet potatoes, I thought they tasted like carrots...
Went on Friday and had Huevos Rancheros. Free range, sunny side up eggs, fantastic tasting black beans, smoky salsa, creme fraiche, guacamole... Highly recommended! I had a side of their turkey sausage which was also tasty. Friend had club sandwich with aged cheddar and his frites came with garlic aioli. He thanked me for picking this place and said his lunch was fabulous.
I love the decor too. It's like a retro diner and quite comfortable. -
Review from Sam L.
I've been to this place twice now - once after it first opened (the first time) and again just the other day. The first time I went, the food was ok, but barely warm and just not very good. I chalked it up to a new restaurant ironing out the kinks, but I just never went back because there are so many other better restaurants nearby. The second time I went it was for brunch with my girlfriend and I had Huevos Rancheros - I've never tasted anything so bland. A pile of lukewarm black beans over a rubbery corn tortilla topped with a fried egg and a little bit of salsa. They give you a little bit of creme fraiche and a TINY bit of guac on the side but it wasn't enough to save this steaming heap of meh. My girlfriend had the crab omelette which wasn't bad, but was also fairly bland. The service was friendly enough, but a bit slow.
I think I was more disappointed in this place than normal because I wanted to like it - having the same owners as the Cascade Room which I really like. It's strange, the Cascade, which is more of a resto-bar has better food than Habit, which is a straight up restaurant. -

I've been here multiple times for brunch, lunch, and dinner, and i've never had a bad dish. Nothing has been extremely spectacular, but i've never been unhappy with what i've ordered. I especially love their brunch items.
On a recent trip, I had dinner with a friend. She had the trout, I had the carrot and brie perogies. Both were good, as usual. Nevertheless, while i'm not a big eater, i have a friends who are, and i've heard on more than one occasion that the portion sizes are a tad too small for what you pay.
Since I usually go for brunch, I hadn't ordered cocktails prior to this recent dinner trip. I decided on the sloe gin fizz, and was pleasantly surprised when I saw that you make your own cocktails! They give you all the ingredients and you shake it yourself. What a fun concept! Though, if ordering more than two cocktails, I can see how this could be a hassle. Nevertheless, i enjoyed reading the recipe card and making my own drink.
Service has always been good. Nothing spectacular, but attentive.
All in all, it was a fun night! -

Yawn.
What's the difference between Habit and Denny's? I'm still not sure.
I've had breaky here twice and it's really just not sexy at all here. The toast was dry; the eggs were warm; the hashbrowns are greasy and the coffee is good. It's not as greasy as Bert's but, well, I never need to go back.
I loved the 80's music playing but it got too loud.
I'd suggest supper there or maybe lunch.
It's just not exciting is what I'm trying to say. -

Went there for dinner on a monday night. It was pretty busy but only 1 server on so the service was really slow. Oh except some server from cascade kept running back and forth helping people lol. Had to walk to the front to pay after waiting 15 minutes for the server to come get our cc and found him chatting with the bartender lol. It was cold in there and it didn't help that the chairs where made of plastic. It was 17$ for an 8oz steak with fries?!? Best thing on the menu looked to be some lamb meatloaf?! Do they make it with left overs from cascade? Pass on this place maybe breakfast is good there?!

Been to Habit for brekky and dinner. Have never been disappointed with the food or service. Nice to see some organic ingredients on the menu. Beverage options are good also.
