Ahoy, matey!
A friend in Seattle raved about sugaring. I combed through Yelp and decided on Habit. I booked my appointment online and decided on Amanda, based on my time availability and what Yelpers had to say. If you are booking online, you will be asked to enter your card information. But don't worry, they will not charge. Unless perhaps you cancel without notification?
A few days prior to my appointment, I received a friendly email reminder about my scheduled appointment. You will also be emailed the door code to enter Habit.
So here I am with a light breakfast in my tummy with two ibuprofens in my system. I traveled BART and Muni for one hour to get here. Bring it.
I enter the door code into the padlock, walk upstairs. Dead silence. Is anyone here? I poke my head through one open door and in the next open door, I see a cute blonde. Her name is Amanda...and she will be ripping my pubic hair out at 10am on a Saturday.
She walks me into a nautical-themed room. The decor is breathtaking with ships galore. And if you couldn't tell I enjoy nautical stuff, peep my helm tattoo. I undress and she gives me the 101 on sugaring. I am excited and terrified. My palms are clammy.
Amanda is friendly and chatty but not overly so. If you make any noise to indicate a more painful hair removal spot, she always asks if you're okay. Although I asked for sugaring, she does use a mix of hard and strip wax, depending on area and hair strength. I definitely appreciate that. After all is done, I want to give her a big hug. Gosh, would that be weird?!
Amanda gave me a warm wet towel to wipe down any leftover wax (barely any) and a cloth with (I believe to be) coconut oil. All in all, a SUPER experience. I will have to return if I am back in San Francisco!Listed in: Va-Jay-Jay

I found Habit through my very helpful friends on Yelp. I have been going to the lovely ladies of Habit now for almost 4 years. Not only is the decor super chic, think hipster meets cozy but they are very good at what they do. Oh and you can book online so there is no awkward phone calls from work "cough, cough. I need a cough, bikini wax."
I have been to all of the ladies but Anna is my favorite. She is funny and sweet and genuinely cares about each person that comes through the door. I actually look forward to seeing her each month (usually you don't look forward to getting your hair ripped out).
I have referred several friends here too and now I am recommending you go ;-) you will be happy you did! -

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Amy. I've never had as an amazing sugaring job as with her. It's ALMOST painless...as close as it'll ever be to painless, I think. I mean, it's always going to hurt to get your woohoo de-shagged, but I mean, she does it in a way where you just don't freaking notice that she's all deshagging you.
I also love how nice and friendly she is as she's taking care of the goods. She's a great conversationalist and even gave me a much needed pep talk and I'm really appreciative of it.
If you've never been sugared, hell if you have ever been sugared to, you need to get your goods over to Amy and have her take care of you...she'll do a fabulous job! -

A place is really only as good as its people and since Anna Crowley is a gem, habit Rocks! I first met Anna years ago through a random appointment I made at a previous business and immediately loved her down to earth warm presence and found her raw humor delightful. I also can't forget to mention that her perfectionist nature is entirely appreciated - you'll always walk out perfectly semetrical. ;) other than that, Habit has a great ambiance and they make it super easy to make appointments online.

All the gals are great, but Anna is by far my favorite - she's sweet, funny and genuine. I don't live at all close to the location, but she's so good it's worth the commute. -

I'm a regular here and would not get my bikini wax anywhere else in the city. Totally worth the trek out to the Marina.
I can't speak for any of the other ladies, but Amy is a lovely person, and very good at what she does. It's one of the only places in town that I've found that does sugaring. This method is waay less painful than regular ol' hot wax, and is made of natural ingredients.
Plus, they give you delicious, fruity cocktails beforehand that definitely help ease the pain. -

I just moved to SF and I just went for the first for a brazilian wax with Carrie. I had a wonderful experience, her waxing technique is perfect! We talked throughout the whole session and she made me feel comfortable.
I would definately recommend her!!
The place is very cosy and quiet . Hardly arrived, you feel already relaxed.
I recommend Habit to anyone. -

My friend recommended Habit to me over two years ago and I couldn't be more thankful. I have eyebrowarexia. I am obsessed with having the best eyebrows around. I was the girl that used to put holes in my eyebrow, get them over-waxed or let them grow too long-- needless to say it was a hot mess. I need a savior. Lucky for me Amanda saved my face. Literally. She's helped me learn to not touch my brows, grow them and trim them at the same time, and maintain them to perfection. She is amazing and I can't say more wonderful things about her. Everyone at Habit is fantastic, but Amanda has been my go-to eyebrow girl and I couldn't be more thankful.

I can stop gushing about my wonderful experience with Bronwyn at Habit!
Iv'e had my eyebrows and bikini waxed before but this was my first experience with sugaring and going "all the way". As you can imagine, I was beyond terrified but Bronwyn made me feel right at ease from the moment I stepped into door. She offered me a drink (or two) and explained every step of the sugaring process. Even though I held my towel like a security blanket the whole time, I loved that Bronwyn understood my apprehension and worked with me until at the end I felt like an old pro!
I love the quirky decorations and overall relaxing atmosphere. I would definately recommend the sugaring as it was at pain free as much as hair removal goes. Habit just made a lifetime client out of me! -

Everything is great, the people, the location the service, amazing. Anna is awesome!!!!!!! She's so nice, helpful, easy to talk to and easy to work with.
Now for the long boring rant about how I found Wax Habit.
When I first moved from NY I was worried about finding new doctors, dentists and a good wax place. Luckily my old roommate recommended Wax Habit and I will never go anywhere else again. Anna is amazing, I thought my girl in NY was good, but Anna is incredibly nice, really helpful and the products they use do not hurt my skin! I LOVE the online booking system too, so easy.
So happy I found Wax Habit but especially Anna, she has helped make my transition here as smooth as it could possible be :-) -

Wax on Wax Off.
I went in for the first time for a brow wax, and was lead into one of the rooms. I'm asked (politely) to take off my pants and skivvies and climb on the table. My response, "I have to take off my underwear for a brow wax?" Her response " Oh well that's not right is it, could you imagine how surprised you'd be?" No s**t. I would have murdered you.
This was followed by instant laughter, an unnecessary apology, and a bonding moment. Once we established my name is very similar to another brazilian wax client who was coming in later it was all good. For the record, they DO have their appointments together ( Online system! check out the website) and they were ready for me and my brow-ness.
The place looks like an Anthropologie catalog, the waiting room has crazy coffee table books, and most importantly, it's very clean. I don't let anyone touch me if the place looks like Marla's apartment from Fight Club.
Amy knew what she was doing. Very meticulous, and she seemed to really enjoy her profession. I found out some interesting facts about my brows too, like how they grow down because of my mexican father. Neat. More importanly I learned how to maintain them so I don't look like my mexican father. Double neat.
Fun fact : My skin is very sensitive, and after getting the sugar wax, I had the least amount of irritation I've ever had. Also, tell them if your skin is sensitve, they will do all they can to help you.
I recommend this place if you look like Bert from Sesame Street or Gerald Sampson. -

AMY is amazing. I've been getting brazilian waxes for the past 4 years now and I've finally decided to get sugared ! Most people say sugaring is less painful than waxing, and I highly disagree. I mean c'mon, at the end of the day you're still yanking out the hairs on your nani, you can't paint a pretty picture with that. BUT, the good news is, every time you go back, your hair is finer and it hurts less than the time before.
Amy is extremely knowledgable and knows her sh*t. We talked throughout the whole session and she made me feel really comfortable. I'm excited for this new found treatment because sugaring is known to lead to permanent hair removal !
I will definitely be back to "get my taco sugared." -

I went to to Habit for the first time last week and had a great brow and lip wax from Amanda. She took time to carefully analyze my eyebrows and came up with a great plan to let them grow a bit with her assistance. In addition to doing a great job, she was very personable and friendly without being annoying. The space is great too! I'll definitely be coming back soon.

As the current mayor of Habit (on Four Square), I can say with experience that Amanda is amazing at her job. I've been going to her for the last eight years for all sorts of waxing treatments, and besides her great technique, there is an ease she has and puts you at when you're in some very vulnerable and compromising positions. Not only will you get great results, but you're guaranteed for some great conversation as well. Give it a whirl!

I am SO happy Amy has brought Sugaring to San Francisco! I've been Sugaring for over a year now and I will never go back to waxing. Amy is absolutely amazing at what she does and the results are super good.
Habit is a really cute spot, and between the salon atmosphere and the friendly estheticians, you feel really comfortable- which is important when you're in such a compromising position...
I'm thrilled Amy and Sugaring are in the Bay! I recommend Habit (and Amy) to anyone looking for an enjoyable hair removal experience. -

Amanda was out today, so I met Amy for the first time, and had my first sugaring. She was very informative and likable, and my eyebrows look great (though they still belong to Amanda).
Sugaring is definitely less painful than a waxing, I think I'm going to make it a "habit."
It isn't, however, a perfect method - there are still parts of my face that do *not* like having hair removed, I'm spending the afternoon indoors with a tube of benadryl and salicylic acid. Bottom line - sugaring isn't everything I had hoped it would be - not their fault at all. It does come close to perfection - my eyebrows were much less red than usual, and the Brazilian was a breeze. I had an amazing experience at Habit. The ambiance of the place is great, they even hand you a cocktail when you show up! It's quiet, relaxing and clean but not in a typical spa way where you feel like you're in a medical clinic. I had a wax with Bronwyn and it was the best bikini wax I've ever had. She does an incredibly thorough job and it even hurt less than usual. She's a very nice person on top of it. I left my appointment more relaxed than i'd been all day! I will most definitely comeback to Habit and I'd love to try more of the services they have to offer!

I love that you book appointments online! I was able to find the perfect time to get a bikini wax the same day I signed up. And the place is wonderful. The waxing room was decorated with old boat pieces, coral, and antique pictures. It felt like I was at a friend's house instead of getting a wax.
Overall, it was a great experience. Very quick, comfortable, and almost pain free. -

Just moved to Cow Hollow this month and found this place using Yelp. I don't think I will ever go anywhere else in SF for my brazilian wax. The Habit is clean, the ambiance is great and your wax comes with a complimentary glass of win - could you ask for anything more?
Jenny was absolutely amazing! She made me feel comfortable instantly, was quick and made the process practically painless. I will definitely be back in a few weeks -

What makes Habit a great place to get a bikini wax are two of their estheticians: Jenny and Anna. Both of them really know how to put you at ease and make a painful and somewhat awkward experience as comfortable as possible. They are very professional and a pleasure to chat with.
I would highly recommend both of them, and in doing so, I probably won't be able to get an appointment anymore. ;-) -

I cannot say enough nice things about Amanda at Habit!
I got to what I thought was my appointment a bit early as it was my first time. I was greeted by a lovely woman in a lovely reception area. She said, "Hi! Carrie?" I said, "No, I'm not Carrie, but I think I'm supposed to be getting waxed by a woman named Carrie... Are you Carrie?". She wasn't Carrie either, she took me right into the office area where we sorted out that I was having a blonde appointment when I booked the appointment as I had booked if for exactly a week after I had meant to. This was very sad news for me since I was scheduled to head out of town the following day and was really in need of her services. Since it was around the end of the day, Amanda offered to wax me after she was finished with the real Carrie who had come in for her appointment in the mean time. I took her up on her offer and she got me a glass of wine to enjoy while I waited.
Her waxing technique is impeccable! I have been waxed before, but never as well. Add in Amanda's outstanding personality, overwhelming generosity, and the sparkling conversation that took my mind off the fact that she was ripping hair out of my body and you have the best waxing experience ever.
I whole-heatedly recommend Amanda at Habit. -

Bronwyn is amazing. I have been getting my eyebrows waxed for 10 years and she is BY FAR THE BEST. She took the time to re-shape my brows and seemed like she really cared how they turned out. She spend over 30 minutes working on them. SHE IS AWESOME.

After a friend's referral to check out Amy and her "sugaring," I decided to check it out. I've been a waxer for years, so when my friend explained that sugaring was better for my skin, can lead to permanent hair loss AND that it was less painful, how could I not? I'm so glad I did...I'm obsessed!
Habit's main door can be easy to miss if you're not paying attention, but once you're inside and head up the staircase it's a super cute place. Amy couldn't have been better! She was so sweet and walked me through the process making me feel really comfortable the whole time. Turns out, my friend wasn't lying about the pain--it's still hair removal so it's not completely painless, but it really was just, maybe, a fraction of what waxing is! (Because it's not pulling your skin too!)
Long story short, it's a little more pricey than where I used to go for waxing, but it's absolutely worth it and I'll definitely be going back in a few weeks! -

I was born with a Frida Kahlo unibrow, so it is imperative that I get it waxed on a regular basis. Thanks to Daily Candy SF, I found Carrie, the best waxist in San Francisco! Carrie is great because she provides sound guy advice while shaping your brows. She also puts pressure on your skin after every rip and pull, which helps to minimize the pain. If you don't have a high threshold for pain, she will offer you wine so you can booze it up before your waxing. I always leave Habit with two (not one!) perfect-looking brows!
I miss you Carrie! I'll make sure to book an appointment with you the next time I'm up north! -

Ok, so I feel like the high school outcast who is raggin on the prom queen but here goes. This is not for the faint of heart...
Some things I noticed about Carrie over several visits:
- She is averse to touching you and makes you pull your own skin apart when waxing. Can't she just wear gloves? If you're paying $60 for 10 minutes of pain, you think she'd do all the work. And I am the kind of person who showers before a wax!
- There was bleeding. Is that normal? Shouldn't three different kinds of fancy wax prevent that?
- I had to wait 10-20 minutes on 3 of 4 appointments.
- The last time I came she spent 5 minutes on me, and I didn't realize until I got home that she was skimpy and missed the sides down below on my bikini wax.
I saw Amanda once and she was good, and more friendly then Carrie, but still painful. She charged me extra for what turned out to be a "modified bikini" where some places would have just charged me for a bikini for the same amount of hair off. That was fine, just unexpected.
Pros: You can book online. Carrie and Amanda are decent at what they do. That place waxes all of the Marina so you can expect it to be a crowd favorite.
Cons: They are not the best. I don't find Carrie to be that friendly or that comforting or that careful. Amanda, I would have to try again to make a fair judgement. I think my friends still see her so that's a good sign.
Maybe I am still mourning over my old aesthetician who moved away, but that's my 2 cents... -

"Wax on, Wax off," but only at Habit.
Since my move to SF I have been a slave to Yelp for its guidance on where to go for most everything. Suffice to say, my grooming has slacked. So I chose Habit from the Yelpers and had an appointment with Carrie.
The entire experience was so delightful. Carrie was amazing, her groom room is crazy chic cool, and the waxing was almost a secondary element to our chatting and super hip atmosphere.
When I left, it took all my good manners not to pull down my pants to unsuspecting bystanders and show them Carrie's amazing handy work. So instead, I called all my friends and let them know that this is the place to get a party in your pants. I definitely have an extra bounce in my step. -

One of the most difficult parts of moving is finding new aestheticians. I was referred to Habit and am so thankful that I was. I have super sensitive skin and usually break out after having my eyebrows done....not with Carrie. The girl is awesome! She'll have you laughing all the way through your Brazilian. Highly recommended.

Coach Carrie! Team Hairless!
I was going write that Carrie is the Mr Miyagi of waxing...Wax on, Wax off....calming, inspiring and amusing with every rip, tear and pull of your body hair...However she is much cooler than that!
She's the hair removal coach that can transform you from beast to bare or saint to slut and make you laugh throughout the painful process.

I don't think I would have ever written a review of Habit, but Mike L.'s review both cracked the ice and cracked me up:
"I'm a guy.
I went to Habit to get my back waxed.
And I fucking loved it."
I've seen Carrie somewhere between 5 and 10 times and Amanda once (she was great too - just settled into a pattern) and I actually look forward to it. Well, except for the brutal, agonizing pain -- which can be ameliorated by boozing up in advance or availing yourself of the free wine (and sometimes vodka). A tip: try to avoid caffeine in advance of your appointment.
The decor is fabulous and makes me feel slightly cooler just for showing up, the salt water taffy is a welcome reward at the end and I feel like a get a two-for-one deal since Carrie is a decent therapist as well. -

Best Brazilian wax i have had yet. i just moved to SF and getting finding a new person I trust for Brazilians is never easy. Amy was awesome. I did the sugaring method. Every hair is gone and it does not make the skin red like waxing does. The cool thing is, sugaring will make your hair grow back less and less. I will be back. It is a really adorable little place too !

Habit was booked, so I strayed back to international orange, and remembered why habit is the best place in town for waxing:
1) the booze
2) Carrie and Amanda; if it didn't seem slightly pervy, I would totally ask them to go get cocktails and talk smack
3) Carrie says it's the special wax she uses (although it could just be the booze - ibuprofen combo I like to rock), but I swear it doesn't hurt as much as other places

Going to Habit is like sneaking into a friend's cooler older sister's bedroom and reading all her Flipside magazines while trying on the awesome boots she got from Shellys with the skull and crossbone buckles. Then she bursts in stinking of clove cigarettes and thrift store incense and tries to hit your friend with her backpack, but you both run out laughing and screaming.
Except when running out of Habit, your junk is all smooth and soft. -

I still love Habit. I still love Carrie. I decided to write an update, though, because I had a wax with Amanda for the first time today, and she is also way awesome! I must admit that I booked with Amanda because Carrie didn't have space on her docket for Brazilians this week (at least not by the time I booked), and since I am going to Mexico next week, it was somewhat of an urgent matter. But, since she's also an aesthetician at Habit, I was fully confident walking in that Amanda would do an excellent job. And, of course, in the spirit of Habit, she gave me a thorough and all-things-considered-not-that-painful wax. She's also really funny and nice, so talking to her definitely took my mind off of...things.
I can now confidently endorse both Carrie and Amanda. (I'm sure Anna is great, too, but I have not gotten to meet her yet).Listed in: How to be a Princess
