Review from Melanie C.
Oakville, ON
I'm frequently in this neighbourhood for lunch or dinner and almost always stop into H&H before or after my meal. Definitely not the cleanest grocery store, but I can find a lot of my authentic Chinese items here.
In particular, I visit H&H for asian pears, lychees, Chinese vegetables (like bok choy), fresh tofu, frozen dumplings, soya milk and, of course, Pocky and White Rabbit candy. You should know your prices before shopping at H&H - some items are priced cheaper than most stores, but others are priced much higher than the competition.
At the front to your right, they have a housewares section - vases, oriental dishes, teapots, etc. They won't necessarily have boxes for these fragile items, so be prepared to haul them away in just a couple of layers of newspaper.
The regular grocery area is in the center of the store. Produce section to the very left, with some bamboo plants for sale at the very front left. If you're hungry, there's usually some sampling going on at the back, centre. You'll find the butchers section towards the back on the left, and the seafood section just behind that.
At the very back (and to the left, past the seafood section) of the supermarket there's a prepared food station. You can pick up some meats or noodle dishes. If you're lucky and they haven't already sold out, you can pick up 7 spring rolls for $1! (I kid you not!)
Everyone employed by H&H seems to be in a hurry. Don't expect great service at any of their counters.
The parking lot is always busy and there are runaway shopping carts everywhere, so I usually park a bit farther (in the next section of the plaza) and walk over.
Lots to look at if you're a browser, so give yourself plenty of time. Be warned that this place is pretty authentic, so some staff may not speak English. Also, you just might see the ugliest fish ever.
