I'm a local on the Sunshine Coast and I live about an hour away from the Gumboot Restaurant. It's not uncommon for me to drive all the way down the Coast just to eat here as it's my favourite restaurant. I may be a bit biased due to the fact that I'm a vegetarian, but they also have plenty of tasty-sounding dishes for omnivores, often including fresh and local seafood and, if I'm not mistaken, some funky game.
Their dishes are unique and delicious and I think very well-priced, and that's coming from a broke 20-year old with very little money to throw around. They also do half-orders of most everything, for those of you with even tighter pockets.
The atmosphere is fun and cosy, with changing artwork from local artists, and the service is usually speedy and friendly. Sometimes it can be loud but it is a popular restaurant, and for good reason!
If you're in the area, be sure to check it out; I would consider it a dining must. Afterwards, take a short stroll down to the ocean and check out the unbelievable view! No dinner here is complete without doing so!
Oh, and they make breakfast until about 2 PM, which is always a bonus in my books. -

There's casual, and then there's casual....
Met up with two friends for Sunday breakfast. The manager- who is also the main server- seemed to be in a foul mood and totally ignored us. There were only two other groups in the restaurant and both were finishing up as we arrived. We sat for 15 mins and it was only when we noticed other tables being seated and served ahead of us that I went and flagged down another waitress and asked her to take our order. The manager came and took our order like it was an annoyance to her, "Whaddya want?" were her exact words, and wouldn't even repeat it back. She should have asked me how I wanted my eggs and didn't. I had wanted the tofu scramble but it came with a plain fried egg. I was too hungry by then to send it back, having been sitting in the restaurant for almost an hour by that point.
If only the quality of service was as good as the quality of the food. The kitchen staff here do a great job, and I only ever come here for the amazing locally-grown cuisine.
The owners need to seriously reconsider their management structure. It seems to be a consistent problem with this one person. In this small community, she seems to decide she doesn't like someone and then they get poor service from then on. When I have visited and been served by the other manager, or indeed any of the other staff, the service has been great. I really question the wisdom in having someone who blatantly does not enjoy her job in such a prominent customer service position.
The restaurant now has a suggestion box, fyi, but there is no paper for it, so we wrote our suggestions on napkins.
Next time for weekend breakfast I think I'll go next door to the Gumboot Cafe, where I always get great service with a smile. -

Easter brunch. Nearly perfect.
Me: Bacon and tomato benny. Eggs perfectly poached. Potatoes mildly spiced. Hollandaise slightly smokey. Fabulous.
Mother: Brie and asparagus omelette. "It was great. Good food. Big portions. Excellent homemade bread."
Service was a bit slow, but it looked like we came in at the tail end of a heavy rush. Room was incedibly loud at times -- crashing cutlery, dropped bottle, a few loud talkers -- but maybe it was just the spot we were sitting. These are somewhat trivial complaints though, considering the intriguing menu and 5 star food. -

Tomorrow morning, I'll be trying the Gumboot Garden Cafe... but tonight, it's all about the lovely wooden tables, quiet music and a medley of conversations ranging from prime Saturday hiking to running to catch the ferry to tales from Burning Man. Ah, this is just the way I think of the Sunshine Coast.
Dining solo seems like it's a normal occurrence: with a buddha bowl at my side and a book in my hand, the restaurant feels like it could also host a family dinner, located in the same house as Creekside Salon.
With daily specials, burgers, and "hearty meals" I was in small town foodie heaven. My buddha bowl had raw and steamed veggies, brown rice, baked tofu, sesame seeds and peanut sauce. Outside of the avocado that tasted so good but felt out of place, it was perfect.
It's the only restaurant in Roberts Creek, but I have the feeling that if I was here for a week, I'd still be working my way through the robust and tasty sounding menu.Listed in: When I'm Out of Town, Weekend Getaways, Faux Meat
