This is a super cool bar on Bishop with live music and good looking people. In Montreal, one can have a hard time finding a place that's off the beaten path of douche-baggery, especially right ON the path of douche-baggery, (i.e. Ste- Catherine) but it's nice to know that amidst the "clubs" with covers and strip bars with striped shirts, there exists a place for fans of good music and good people.
Definitely gonna make Grumpy's a routine tour stop. -

My friend said, "I know this place called Grumpy's." I said, "Let's go there, I've never been."
We snaked our way in through the mid to late 30s crowd and sat down at the bar. Almost immediately, some horrid creature of a woman grabbed my friend's shoulder and yelled at us to fuck off for no reason. We laughed. Then we ordered a couple of rounds.
It was dark as hell in there. The atmosphere reminded me a little of that of the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars. The bartender was friendly and charismatic, some of the other patrons were friendly as well, but still, a lot of the patrons were also creeps. Me and my friend are in our mid to late 20s and we were clearly the youngest people in there. More than once some old witch from an old tree would barge into us and then tell us something inappropriate, which we partially enjoyed. Some of our neighbours at the bar were a couple of lone sad sacks consistently whispering, "Another beer, another shot, another beer, another shot," to the bartender. There was a live band playing some interesting music, which progressively got louder and louder over the course of their set so that it became exponentially more difficult to communicate with my friend. I noticed that nearly 90% of the clientele were standing and chatting. It was pretty crowded and I was glad I had a seat. A seat at the bar was prime real estate and the moment my friend went to the bathroom a horde of people asked me if they could sit at his seat. I indicated that his coat was there and shook my head with delight. Because I am a jerk. A round for two gentlemen cost approximately $11 if I recall correctly, so it didn't necessarily break the bank (especially not for some pints of local St-Ambroise), but it wasn't incredibly cheap either.
Anyway, the Mos Eisley Cantina isn't the greatest place on earth but it ain't bad either. I'll probably make a friendly trip there on occasion (to the chagrin of their more elderly customers). -

Grumpys is a fun basement bar where the locals were hanging out on this night. Our waitress at Hurley's recommended this place to us for cheaper beers $6? and live music. No music on this night, but there was an old fashioned trivia show. We watched the locals play for a bit before moving on. "M" wants to beleive he liked it here but "A" remembers it correctly. We left and "M" said "I don't think I got that place. Wish the bartender made a better vodka seltzer so that will cost another star.

A great little dive located in the heart of Montreal. Take a few steps down from the street into the bar; which is dark and dingy. There is usually a live band playing. The crowd is mid 20 to late 30 somethings. Typical Irish-dive bar atmosphere. Reasonable prices for the city. Enjoy a beer, cider or shot with friends and then hop on to the next dive.

A dark, little basement bar, Grumpy's seem to be most fit for a quick stopover pint. This just doesn't strike me as a destination bar. Don't get me wrong, the bartender is nice and there was live music (and some dude playing a hockey stick-cum-musical instrument), but aside from that there is not too much going on in here.
Standard prices for drinks, standard levels of cleanliness for a pub and standard patrons for a establishment close to downtown and McGill.
If you are looking for a quiet, hole in the wall this might be your place. If you are looking for something a little more animated, wander up the street. -

What a great little place. A friend and I recently visited Montreal and spent two of our three nights here. A super cozy, neighborhood joint.
After spending almost $40 on two rounds of beer at some awful sports bar up the road, we followed a quartet of musicians into Grumpy's. The music was excellent, though I can't figure out exactly how the band worked. Whatever. A French horn. I'm sold.
The bartender was extremely friendly and I have a sneaking suspicion that a round or two was on him, though I was beyond math when we stumbled out of there. -

Casual venue with $4 pints of beer. Nothing fancy but the people are really nice that work there and they seem to have a lot of regular customers who all know each other. On Sunday we hit Trivia night after being upstairs at Comedyworks. That was my first trivia night at a pub and it was fun. Last night after the improv we popped down for a beer and there was a good jazz band playing. Not too loud that you couldn't talk though. Totally chill place with cheap drinks and nice people is A-OK for me.
