Review from Jonathan S.
York, ON
At the risk of paraphrasing grossly, British celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal often speaks in terms of sense memories. He believes that we love our favourite foods as much as we do because of associations with some happy event in our past.
Greg's ice cream confirms and challenges this notion at the same time.
Throughout university, Greg's was my first stop following my last exam of the term. A scoop of his darkest chocolate, maybe something coffee flavoured, occasionally something fruity-a cup provided comfort when I feared flunking physics, and buoyed me when I thought I'd aced English.
Greg's was archetypal ice cream; butterfat delivering pure flavour, the way I remembered ice cream as a child. Others can have their sundaes and toppings; for me it was all about the ice cream itself, without empty sugar or the distraction of random crunchy bits. If I felt bold, I'd turn the works into a malted milk, and remember sitting on the deck in my early-80s short shorts at a plastic kiddie table in the middle of summer, even though outside it was December.
How then to explain my love for flavours like Guinness, or Grape-nut (a horrid breakfast cereal when not consumed as ice cream), or Greg's signature roasted marshmallow? I was never much for camping, unless I was out to impress a girl; and surely there's more to sense-memories than the mere joy of caramelization. Or maybe thw whole damned lot just tastes awesome.
Just go. And enjoy. -
Review from Maheen M.
Greg's ice cream was the place to grab a delicious frozen treat if you were in the Annex area. My visit last night I was disappointed that the prices went up and portion sizes went down. The roasted marshmallow ice cream is still fabulous as ever but I was truly saddened with my scoop size. My single scoop looked like a half scoop. My SO did enjoy his Lemon Meringue ice cream. For two single scoop it was about $9. I had I known this I would have prefer us to get a pint of Hagen Daaz and indulged ice cream at home. Luckily, we were able to hang out in the shop and enjoy our ice cream with our friends.
Oh well - it is worth the trip for the unique flavours. Apparently, Greg's has a second location in the distillery district. -
Review from Dishan W.
When I first got here, everyone at UofT would rave about Greg's and I would say it is for good reason, they are open late, carry numerous flavours , have big serving sizes and taste good (very very sweet). Not a fan of annoying line ups, price and lack of seating especially if you're forced outside with ice cream when it's cold outside.
Staff treat you fine and some of their featured flavours do sound exciting. I recommend Greg's over most other ice cream parlours in the area, but I doubt it has the claim as the best ice cream in Toronto.Listed in: My November 30

Hands down, the best roasted marshmallow ice cream EVER :) They are incredibly generous with their portions too. I usually get the smallest size, and I can barely ever finish it. Although, to be honest, there is no such thing as too much ice cream, is there?:)
I love its location, I love the variety of flavours they have. Truly one of Toronto's gems :) -
Review from Lauren M.
It's worth a trip here just to try Roasted Marshmallow. It is SO delicious. Anyone who grew up going to the cottage or even summer camp and roasted marshmallows over a campfire can surely appreciate this unique ice cream flavour.
It's quite rich so stick to a small portion (ha, ha, I know, right?) -
Review from Fern H.
Small ice cream shop with unique and yummy flavors.
I think the toasted marshmellow flavor is a love/hate thing. I happen to crave it fortnightly.
After thinking about it for most of the summer, I finally caved and snuck over on a lunch break. I got the half scoop which is exactly the right portion size for me. Cost - $3.00 even.
Shop is serviced by U of T students scooping their way through university.
On the off chance that they are sold out of toasted marshmellow, I have also tried sweet cream and stout flavors.
Seating is limited so grab your cone or cup to go.Listed in: Downtown Lunching

So, I graduated!! I was in Toronto for 4 years... and living pretty close to Greg's ice cream but shamefully... never have tried their famous ice-cream!!
so I decided to one day, walk in... by myself to try their roasted marshmallow flavor.
oh..
god d ness!!
its YUMMY!! I like it! -

A constant favourite for summer and all year long. I'm afraid I've raved about it too much over the years and now they're running out of my favourite flavours!
Worst flavour - Roasted Marshmallow. Seriously don't have it. Please. Let me have all of it. Stop finishing up my favourite flavour :)
Second worst flavour- CoffeeToffee. Tried with when RM was unavailable (no thanks to people like you reading this) and it was like having an espresso in icecream form. Not to be tried late night.
Other flavours that are supposed to be really bad as well- Sweet Cream and Green Tea
Try it out if you must but don't be in line in front of me when I'm on a RM crave. -

Went here on a particularly hot day and another example of yelpers being spot on!
Sampled the mango and the citrus berry but ended up settling on the berry as I've been over loading on mangos lately... Blame that on my south east Asian heritage.
Found the flavor to be well balanced between the sweetness of the berries and the tartness of the citrus could have gone a bit less on the sweetness but then again it's ice cream so I'm not going to deduct for that
The serving portions for this treat are generous as a single scoop was enough to satisfy both my wallet and my summer heat tooth!
Wish they would expand and start accepting cards and maybe even a loyalty card?
One last note not sure if it's normal but the cashier asked me to pay with a smaller bill when I offered a 20 if that is normal hopefully it changes if not, I guess I'll have to go again some time! -
Review from Joanne S.
Toronto, ON
The portions are huge, the service is friendly and the ice cream is so creamy I felt like I was sucking on the teat of a cow. A cow that produces green tea and roasted marshmallow flavoured creamy milk.
So maybe I didn't like the roasted marshmallow, too much of the roasted flavour and not enough of the marshmallow. The roasted flavour, however, was not artificial tasting but not so delicious for me. The green tea was excellent, no bitter after taste like at some places.
You get two scoops for something like 5 bucks and the scoops are huge and creamy. I can't wait to try more adventurous flavours as I'll definitely be back!
Oh and they only accept cash! Also I used the word "creamy" a lot, so you should have some idea of what you're in for! -

I went to Greg's Ice Cream before I read all these reviews and did not even this is such a popular ice cream parlour.
As usual I let my adventurous food crawl companion pick the ice cream flavours and he did a marvelous job!
Indian Summer
- creamy based with corn and spice, tasted ok but there are too many whole kennel of corn, if they have mashed up into smaller pieces I might have enjoy that more
Stout
- for sure ice cream for adults like me does not have a sweet tooth. Though it is creamy and smooth, there is this bitterness of dark beers and the sweet smell of alcohol. I have a feeling of indulging on the foaming Guinness' beer head at an Irish Pub
I am kind of glad that Roasted Marshmallow flavour is not available on that day since I don't think I would have enjoy its excessive sweetness.
We were there on this Sunny Autumn afternoon and no line ups! Wondering who is going to be eating ice cream when it is -15C in the winter. -
Review from susan c.
I ordered a small cone which yielded two massive C-cup-sized scoops of Green Tea and Greg's signature Roasted Marshmallow ($4). For a visual of how top heavy this cone was, think of Tori Spelling post-boob job.
While I enjoyed the Roasted Marshmallow flavor, I found the ice cream to be so rich and excessively creamy it was like licking a ball of sweet butter. I like my green tea ice cream intensely green and chock full of matcha. Greg's version, a mere celadon in color, was pretty weak.
Greg's is OK given the dearth of choices in the neighborhood but not worth waiting for in those insane line-ups. However, given a choice between Greg's or Baskin Robbins down the street, I'd choose Greg's.Listed in: Chill Out

Review from Johnathan N.
Brampton, ON
Greg's does precisely one thing: they make tasty ice cream. They get reasonably funky with the flavours, and my recommendation to you is to come looking for that. Vanilla at Greg's, while good, is sort of a waste.
The selection rotates daily, but my perennial favourite remains the Cinnamon ice cream. It will seem so obvious to you in retrospect, even if you're making a face right now. The Coffee Toffee is also a stalwart companion and, if you can get it through your head to try, the PB&J flavour is exactly PB&J, in ice cream form.
I think the Stout is the only flavour I haven't really loved, though being a lover of stout beers, it could just be that my brain got confused. If you're feeling more conservative but still want to let Greg's show its stuff, try the Malted Vanilla or the Pistachio. -

OKAY! I wonder if the girl at the counter ever gets tired of asking CUP or CONE? The street seating allows for around 5 while inside allows 8 or so. I wonder what happens when it rains and every customer battles for real estate inside this tiny Ice Cream only spot.
I shouldn't say Ice Cream only as there are Sundae, Shakes, Floats, Soft Drinks, and Bottled Water. Asking if I can try 2 flavours, I was given the choice of Small($3.95) or Medium($4.79). You should know what I got by now.
Roasted Marshmallow was Toasty Burnt as Chris P said and left that aftertaste that almost made Water($1.75) mandatory. You know when you burn something on your toaster oven and can't get the smell out for days? White Chocolate actually tasted like Marshmallow as it wasn't as SOLID state as the Roasted Marshmallow, it was much softer and airy.
The PORTION size in my opinion is A-OK as some other Gelato places has slightly smaller but they offer 3 flavours in one cup. Greg my boy, I give you 0.5 *Stars* more because you played "Over the Rainbow" and other songs of that era that is so easy to relax to.Listed in: Desserts - Frozen

I appreciate that these guys are open acceptably late (midnight during the summer) and that they run a no nonsense shop with a rotation of flavours. Cinnamon ice cream (first discovered at Ed's) is a must and the quality here is outstanding. Lemon Meringue is also decent but not a good choice to mix with the cinnamon. Roasted Marshmallow was also quite good but not a first pick.
Since the official website is sorely lacking in both practicality and critical information, I'll spare you the trouble: though the address says Spadina, it's actually on Bloor just west of it on the south side, and scoops range in price from $3-5, cash only and most likely to go.Listed in: Jammin' With Gelato

Review from Andy O.
Well... first off: I have never eaten ice cream that TASTED bad, so for me having chunks and creative flavors is essential if an ice cream shop wants to occupy a special place in my heart.
At Greg's, there are unfortunately no such things. Almost no extraordinary creations and almost all of the flavors are perfectly smooth.
So to me, it is just average ice cream and thus not worth revisiting. I get more of a kick out of some Häagen Dazs Strawberry Cheesecake, Pecan Caramel and whatnot. -
Review from Chris P.
The good:
- The staff are on the ball and can pump people through at an amazing rate.
- Their summer hours are actually late, not like other places extended summer hours
- The mint chip ice cream is a good twist on the standard mint chocolate chip flavour
The bad:
- Cash only
- The toasted marshmallow was more like burnt marshmallow. Though, seeing everyone elses comments about it, maybe I just got a bad batch.
- There isn't really any seating, but the sidewalks are very wide here so you can loiter and not worry about getting in someones way. -

So worth it.
Shared three scoops ($6) of ice cream with a friend:
Roasted Marshmallow (juuuust right),
Strawberry (passable), and
Sweet Cream (like whipped cream but ice cream)
was so. worth. it.
Sampled Ginger Peach (this is good! the balance is between the two is lovely.) and Pistachio (standard but yummy!)
Gotta come back to try the other flavours! Maybe even in the winter, :D. -
Review from Marie F.
I was walking around in the Annex in the blistering sun and then it hit me... it's officially ice cream season! Excited by this realization I quickly whipped out my iPhone and used my trusty Yelp app to find the nearing ice cream shop. (Yelp HQ I accept payment for my shameless plugs in the form of shoes!)
Greg's ice cream was the first on the list and I was excited to try a non-Laura Secord/Baskin Robins/Dairy Queen joint. I liked that they had a good mix of classic flavors (chocolate, vanilla, etc...) with a few funkier options (Strawberry yogurt, marshmallow and coconut).
At $4 a cup, I though it would be more worth it to go for a less traditional flavour. I got one small scoop of coconut ice cream in a cup and it was yummy... mmmm coconut! Not only did it taste homemade but also there were pieces of fresh shredded coconut in the ice cream.
My only complaint would be the wait time. When I went it was super busy and since there is only one guy doing both the scooping and the cash I waited about 7 minutes for my scoop. FYI it's cash only -
Review from Paul F.
Never thought of toasted marshmellow as a flavor I would dream about but this stuff was great- I could taste the camp fire- I got a double and mixed the marshmellow with chocolate to create my own s'more- If only I had a gram cracker cone- this place should not be missed- it was a hot night and the ice cream was the perfect ending. Enjoy.

Review from Jeannette W.
I read about this place in Frommer's and being the ice cream fanatic that I am, this was another place on my Toronto must-do list. I wish I had read up on this place in yelp first, because then I would have known beforehand that the address is, in fact, very misleading. When I located the address, I found it belonged to a Jewish Community Center. So I asked two nice guys standing in front of the main entrance where Greg's was, and they said right around the corner in the same building, and lo and behold, there it was, with a line out the door.
There were some unusual choices, like stout, but I settled on maple cream (I am in Canada after all) and malt chip. I thought the malt chip had good malt flavor, reminiscent of Ovaltine from my childhood, but the maple cream had a very weak maple flavor and since I am used to maple nut ice cream this paled in comparison.
But I have to confess that I am an ice cream snob, living in the San Francisco Bay Area which is the home of boutique gourmet ice cream. All in all, I thought the ice cream was fine, but nothing extraordinary. And it was fun to explore a local shop with such a long history. -
Review from David R.
You'll get the two basic requirements of an ice cream shop in here--great ice cream and smiles. I hate going to an ice cream or candy store or some such place and being met with indifference or rudeness. The two kids working Greg's on Sunday afternoon were cheerful and pleasant.
And you can't beat the product. I tried the coconut and the maple walnut (both excellent) but went with the maltball crunch....mmm. That was some really good stuff. Two sticky thumbs up on the ice cream. Oh, and a small is two scoops for only $3.85. -
Review from Tammy Y.

There's a reason why White Squirrel and even that strange crepe place on Queen West promote the fact that they carry Greg's Ice Cream... and it is this: because they are the freaking bomb of all bombastic ice cream.
To be fair, yes, it's true, sometimes their ice cream is a little too melty and yes, you could pay a smidge less for something you're going to inhale in about 10 minutes. However, there is no denying that for those 10 minutes, you are in sweet tooth heaven.
Step into Greg's and there is nothing there to suggest that this place is anything special, except for maybe the consistent line-up out the door. The flavours rotate regularly, but if you are lucky enough to be there when they have their signature "Roasted Marshmellow" flavour, or another favourite, Lavender, be sure to get a scoop of that!
TIP: order a single scoop and you can get 2 flavours. Turns out their single scoop is really two. :) -
Review from Terry P.
Fantastic ice cream. Yesterday my friend and I shared a large, which is 3 scoops, and comes to almost $6. I would never go to Greg's without having the Roasted Marshmallow, and we also had Banana Chocolate Chunk, and Chocolate Frost. The Roasted Marshmallow is amazing and it is not unusual for me to moan in delight while I eat it ("ice-cream-gasm"). It tastes exactly like actual roasted marshmallows, except of course, it's cold..and ice cream...so it's deliciously confusing. It's hard to believe that a Greg's employee is out somewhere roasting marshmallows over a fire, but it certainly tastes like it. The banana chocolate chunk had a powerful fresh banana taste. The chocolate frost was a chocolate malt type flavour - good but not amazing. I've heard the green tea ice cream is great, and hope to try it next time.
Service is always friendly by the way, even at busy times. -
Review from Matthew S.
Toronto, ON
Decent ice cream, but certainly not amazing. Although they make their ice cream in store, I'd say it's about on par with the better mass produced stuff like Baskin-Robbins. Prices are on the high side of reasonable.
They have a rotating selection of about 15 flavours, some classics and some a little more interesting. Unfortunately, the interesting flavours I tasted (Lemon Meringue and Roasted Marshmallow) weren't done very well and I wouldn't recommend them. In the end I went with Chocolate Toffee and Coffee Toffee, which were both good.
My main complaint is that they were super stingy with their scoops. I ordered a medium cup and the cup was literally a third empty. Very disappointing. Hopefully this was just a one-time mistake by the server.
Check Greg's out if you're in the area, but it's certainly not worth going out of your way for. -
Review from Eleanor W.
Best Ice cream I've ever had. It could be apocolyptic winter outside and there will still be at least a handful of people waiting in line inside Gregs. During the summer the line snakes around the block. Best to buy a litre and enjoy it at home (there are only two tables inside!)
Best flavors: Roasted Marshmallow, Sweet Cream, Coffee Toffee -
Review from Sapna G.
Calgary, AB
Some of the best ice cream in all of Canada, however some of the most expensive as well.
But then again, the ice cream *IS* churned fresh daily. And then again, Greg's has flavours I haven't even seen in my dreams. And then again, Greg's changes their flavours daily so that regular patrons never get bored. Pffft, as if ice cream could ever be boring.
Anyone who has lived in Toronto has fo' sure heard of Greg's, and this isn't the case for no reason. You owe it to yourself to have it at least once in this lifetime so jot this one down on that bucket list. -
Review from G K.
Mississauga, ON
By far the best ice cream in the city. Greg's usually has a staple of flavors including coffee toffee, roasted marshmallow, trail mix, green tea as well as more classic flavors like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. For $5.40 you get two huge scoops and your choice of two flavors of ice cream.
I visit far too often and have sampled most flavors. RM, CT and Peanut Butter and Jam top my personal list but pop in around the holidays when they have cool flavors like pumpkin (halloween) and and candy cane (christmas).
Truly a Toronto institution and its central location at Spadina and Bloor makes it easily accessible for the ice cream lover. Stop reading, start eating! -

This place is conveniently located at the busy end of Bloor by the Loblaws. (I covertly parked there, walked through the other exit to Greg's but then my guilty conscience tricked me into buying a cauliflower head)
Anyways, so you can find parking, and this was on a hot muggy weekend. Perfect for icecream. Based on the recommendations, went with the small size cone, (two scoops), one sweet cream and the other roasted marshmellow. Both were good, not mind altering like others have reported. The roasted marshmellow was interestingly tasty, a kind of mystery flavor that you can't put your finger on.
The coffee toffee I was okay with, too much coffee. The rocky road was decent. The coconut chocolate chip was yummy but I love coconut.
Overall, I'm giving the slight edge to Ed's real scoop. A bit creamier and more choices. Let the debate begin! Who's got the better ice cream? My vote is in. -

I bought Greg's Ice Cream at Pusateries a couple months ago and loved it!
I didnt know they actually had a icecream parlour tho.
I stumbled across this place a month ago and keep walking past it not sure if I should go in.
Finally yesterday my friend and I were walking down bloor st. and decided to give it a try!
Not many flavours to choose from I think around 10? But what they did have we liked. I got Coffee Toffee and my friend got Chocolate Rockyroad.
It was around 4$ for a Small w/2 scoops.
It was deffinitly worth it!
Sooo Yummy!

Review from Amy D.
Ice cream is great on a hot summer day but lets face it, there is never a wrong time of the year to indulge. I have been to Ed's many times and i love it, but i wanted to explore other parlors, which lead me to Gregs. For $5.40 you can choose 2 flavours which is a bargain, but if you select the wrong flavour to pair it with, it can be disastrous. So i opted for just one flavour, the heavily reviewed Burnt Marshmallow. One lick of this icy treat and i was flooded with many great memories of campfires. There was no hint of artificial flavouring in this ice cream, it was straight up authentic and was so creamy. Gregs doesnt have the trendy location has other ice cream joints, but it is definitely a neighborhood joint.

Review from Bijan V.
Greg`s Ice Cream is a unique Ice Cream place in Toronto. They make their ice cream in the store!! No more crazy processed machine made crap, they make it themselves and it tastes AMAZING.
They have new flavours every few weeks (or is it everyday) to keep you coming back but I know many people who drive all the way from Richmond Hill just to buy a litre tub to take home.
A must try is their Roasted Marshmallow flavour!! Sooooo goood mmmm I want ice cream now -
Review from Dardana M.

I agree with Mike, that ice cream seems to be sort of the final frontier in this city- as far as I know, anyway. There aren't all that many vendors doing what everyone feels the need to do with coffee and paper goods and cupcakes and...falafels?
I *am* gonna shake things up a bit and say that I'm not the hugest ice cream eater. Thus, when I do partake, I want nothing but the *good stuff*. That is the only stuff that can get me. Greg's gets me. My favourite flavour is the "sweet cream" which I guess is maybe like...a more plain version of vanilla? Yeah, I'm pretty boring when it comes to this stuff.
On a somewhat related note, those photos are killing me with deliciousness. Man. -
Review from Catherine M.
ON
Invariably on hot summer nights, the line to Greg's snakes out the door and down the sidewalk. The popularity of this homemade ice cream parlor just can't be reckoned with. And frankly, there really aren't any fair contenders in that fight.
While a mild sensitivity to heavy cream means I can only indulge periodically, and that I am more apt to hit up fro-yo or gelato options first, I can happily say that I have learned that a bite or two of Greg's won't do me any real harm. The specialty flavors are out of this world and the toppings are always fresh and tasty.
The one complaint I have about Greg's is the fact that their store is so tiny and sadly devoid of outdoor seating of any kind. As such, there are about three tables which are heavily sought-after and fought over. Everyone from old people to teenyboppers lay claim to the seats in Greg's, and despite the impermanence of ice cream they sure manage to linger at those tables for a long time. Maybe the thrill of victory? The table situation isn't a problem on nice nights, but when a friend decides that Greg's is a must have on a cold, rainy October night, eating ice cream al fresca gets old, quick.
Obvs get the marshmallow, it's insane even if you don't love marshmallow with an undying passion as I do. Other flavors to watch for are the coconut, banana and sweet cream flavors.Listed in: Sweet Tooth

Thornhill, ON
I was a first timer yesterday. Service could be more streamlined especially on hot days when the line goes out the door. Service wasn't particularly quick. The ice cream tasted icey and not smooth leading me to suspect they use cheap ingredients (modified milk ingredients, different types of guar gums etc). It wasn't "creamy" as I believe ice cream should be.

We stopped by for an ice cream break since it was sooo hot today. My sis-in-law told us that they have this Stout flavor that is supposed to taste like Guinness that we had to try. Unfortunately, they didn't have that flavor today. There were a lot of people in line, but it went pretty quickly. We had 5 different orders and even tried samples and it still went by fairly quickly. I decided to go for the kiddie size (one scoop) in a sugar cone - raspberry lemon yogurt. It was very light and refreshing. Lots of raspberry seeds though.

mmmm... this was the perfect thing for such a hot day as today. My husband and I were in the neightborhood this afternoon and there was no line at all! I had a small sugar cone with the mango ice cream - 2 scoops - big - and he had the same size with banana. Both were delicious, perfect for the heat, and not too melty at all. I really liked my sugar cone too. mmmmmmmmm.

There are few things in life which are pure happiness and I would like to put forth that ice cream is one of those things. I can honestly say that I have never met anyone who didn't like ice cream. This is where Greg's Ice Cream comes into play, despite the universal love of the icy treat, there are disturbingly few independent ice cream shops who attempt to experiment with flavours and thus we end up with the measly selection that you can find at any ice cream counter. Greg's is different, they make their own ice cream and it is delicious. There are very few things that I will walk forty minutes to get, Greg's is one of those places. When you walk I can understand if you are a bit unsure of what to order, the flavours are different from your usual blend, your first instinct may be to go for the easy choice a Chocolate or Vanilla both of which I'm sure are delicious, but that would be entirely missing the point. If you have never had roasted marshmallow ice cream you have not truly lived. I don't know how they do it, but it tastes like it has just come off the campfire I would also recommend the sweet cream it's subtle and not overpoweringly sweet, but it tastes just like whipped cream and it's incredible.

We liked it! They were generous with their samples and the ice cream scoopers seemed to actually enjoy what they were doing. Even though they were probably just students they were knowledgable about the ice cream and the flavors! Its nice to hear an opinion!

Cash only. They had mostly fruity flavours when I went. Mango, raspberry lemon, cranberry, etc. I got mango and my friend had pistacio. A-ok.
