Yeah, this is probably the best independent bookstore in town. They're very clear that they're about a solid base in classic and comtemporary literature, but with great support for local and national Canadian authors. Many Governor General Award and Booker Prize winners do readings and signings at Greenwoods when they're in town.
The staff reads what they sell and can guide you in selecting and enjoying books that you might not otherwise hear of. That's what an independent is all about.
Let's face it. You can get your "Movie-tie-in" Novelizations at Superstore. Come to Greenwoods for a book. -

I love bookstores. I REALLY love bookstores. If you look at my reviews, there are already several reviews of other bookstores in the city.
I've been in Greenwoods' several times, and while I feel it's incredibly important to support the little guy, every time I go in here I'm disappointed.
Not the selection necessarily, but the people who work there. I've worked retail, and while I know many customers (like me) don't like to be hounded by salesclerks, I at least like to get a smile and maybe a hello when I walk in, like they're glad to see me. I don't get that here. Pretty much ever. I don't know if I'm wearing the wrong thing, or I don't look cool enough, or literary enough, or what. I'm trying to get published too, so if it's the last one, then I'm really pi**ed.
But if I'm spending my money somewhere, I like to think that they're happy I'm visiting them instead of going somewhere else. And Greenwoods' just really doesn't seem to care one way or another. I'll go in if I'm in the neighborhood, hitting Planet Organic or Bulk Barn or something, but I usually don't spend much, just because of the snotty vibe I get from them.
Sorry Greenwoods folk if that sounds harsh, but next time I come in, maybe get your employees to smile or say hi instead of chatting at the front desk the entire time I browse. Maybe you'll change my mind. -

I go in occasionally if I can't deal with the "Chapters" crowd. I am usually the only customer in the store. It is nice and quiet and nobody is drinking coffee around you. There are no screaming kids and homeless people just looking for the bathroom. I get my book, calendar or notepad and get the heck out. I like their sale table. They encourage you to use your own shopping bag, but won't chastise you for getting their plastic bags.
"Are you a member"? NO. That's O.K. They don't pester you about it.
If I need help remembering the book title, they just read my mind and get it for me. Very capable. Nice. That's all I want. -

You'll have to walk off Whyte a bit to find Greenwoods' Bookshoppe, but this fine independent book store is worth the exercise and your consideration. They have a great selection and do a much better job at showcasing Canadian authors (and subjects) than its nearby corporate competitor (Chapters). And based on my limited Edmonton experiences, only Audrey's compares.
It's clear that the folks at Greenwood's love books and I haven't noticed any real snobbishness. I particularly appreciate spacious layout, the children's section and the comfortable browsing accommodations. -

Greenwood's is an independent book store that offers a great selection. If you are particularly supportive of Canadian authors then you will love this place because they display many.
They have a huge variety of books and they have books on pretty much every subject you could think of. They also provide seating for anyone that wants to sit down and read comfortably.
The staff is quite knowledgeable when it comes to books and know where everything is kept. If you are looking for something specific just ask them and they usually know what they have and don't have. Greenwood's is a really good book store and doesn't get enough credit. -

I'm so glad Greenwoods is close to my place, it's the best quality independent bookstore I've been to so far. While I like to go to Chapters once in awhile to browse through the books, I think it's a better idea to come to Greenwoods if I need to buy something, because it's an independent and local shop, and it's always good to support the little guys!
Greenwoods has books on every subject, including yoga, Aboriginal, Canadian photography, and gay and lesbian categories. There's something for everyone here. Their fiction section is a kind of small, so if they don't have what I'm looking for, I'll probably go to Audrey's. But it's still great here. All the different sections are laid out in an organized manner, and the signs are in big print so it's easy to spot which you're looking for. They have tables and seats throughout the store too, so you can sit and relax with a book for awhile.
The kids' section is really cool, located in a cozy corner away from the adults' section. There's a small table with little chairs and puzzles for kids to sit and play while parents browse through books. They have lots of babies and toddlers' toys in addition to all the different kids' books.
And if you're a fan of the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer, they have free buttons, bookmarks, and posters right now. Hurry while there's still some left! -

I really like this bookstore. It is great for supporting Canadian authors. They have a very vast selection of subjects.
My only issue with this bookstore is that I feel the staff are somewhat snobby. They empathize that they sell "fine literature" and if you make the mistake of asking for something that is not deemed as "fine literature" you will get a dirty look and a "umm NO", not the mention a couple awkward minutes. That being said, if you ask for something that does qualify as "fine literature" they are very helpful and they will help you find what you need.
If you are looking for Canadian authors or fine literature, this is the place to be. If you are looking for a Harlequin romance or something that qualifies as less-than-fine-literature, don't bother asking. Save your embarrassment and go to Chapters. -

If I can't find it second-hand, I come here. If they don't have it, the staff can probably bring it in. This is a place that makes supporting local business easy because of the service and selection.
