Review from M. Y.

I think this is the best Thai restaurant I've been to in the GVA. I went on a Monday evening so it may explain the friendly and speedy service my friend and I received.
The ambience was really nice-- the restaurant had a decorative and oriental feel. The seating area is quite small but well spaced. The hostess let me choose my own seat. The washroom was clean but did not meet the aesthetic expectations the restaurant decor had set up.
The menu was beautiful and labelled well; it included the name and descriptions, as well as a numbering system to make ordering easier.
My friend and I ate a set menu that included an appetizer, entree, and dessert. It was really kind of them to let us substitute the entree option for other dishes that we wanted (we just had to pay the difference). My friend and I shared a saucy seafood platter (G7B) and a stir fried then baked vegetarian plate. The appetizer consisted of a spicy prawn kebab and a spring roll for each of us and the dessert was vanilla ice cream. The appetizer was delicious! The prawn extremely tender. The ice cream was a bit on the icy side though.
Overall, I would come again! -

I'm a big fan of their tom yum and gai yaang (the most tender and moist bbq chicken!).
The best time to come here is during lunch when their specials are $7.50 for curry, rice and appy. -

Decent That Place... If they have Thai in the title, they mean business.
Have you evey noticed that most Thai restaurants have Thai in the title? Thai House, Lhy Thai, Thai Palace (old and gone), Chili Club Thai (changed their name)... Some of the newer ones don't and I probably bypass them because I don't know they're a Thai restaurant... like Pink Elephant. Wouldn't have guessed.
Anyhoo, back to my story: so I came here for lunch with a friend and about a week late came back for dinner with a bigger group. Both times were pretty good. Of course lunch was faster, but dinner was s-l-o-w.
Okay, lunch first. We came here during lunch on a weekday. We came here because next door was jam packed. I work, so I can spend all day waiting for sushi. So we came here. As we walk in, not really sure which way to go because of the bench seating. Walk right, not sure... walk left... ah, workerbees. All the tables are full, so we wait HK dim sum style near a table and eye them till they leave. Just kidding, they were leaving. The staff separates the table of four into two and we sit down. Harold and Maude (or mother and son, I ain't judging) sit down at the table next to us.
They have lunch specials, so I order the Pad Thai. My friend orders the green curry. The food comes out really fast. Nice surprise that my dish has little scallops in it. The dish had a nice flavour and was huge, so I took the rest back to the office for lunch the next day. They were really attentive for a busy lunch and my water glass was refilled numerous time.
Now onto dinner. We made reservations on a Friday night and showed up early. They seated us on the same side as a massive party. I am guessing the food was super slow because of them. My husband and I ordered way too much food for our tiny little table. We ordered the beef lettuce wraps, the pork spring rolls and some chicken curry noodles. I would have been happy with just the lettuce wraps and spring rolls. You can't go wrong with those. I was not a big fan of the noodles. I didn't order them, so I don't know the name of it. It had chicken, it had coconut milk and noodles. I would have rather had the Pad Thai again.
The service was okay, but really slow. At one point, we had been trying so hard to get our server's attention because I wanted more water, pop, anything... she did come back to ask if we wanted dessert. I did. We ordered the deep fried bananas with ice cream. The bananas were hard and not that sweet... they seemed like plantains. -

Review from Simon K.
I have eaten at this location many times before, and as of last Friday due to service I was outraged. Me and a friend were looking for a close place to eat while we were at Metrotown shopping, and decided to use the 'Entertainment Book' Android application, as I have this coupon book. I set the application to search in the area for places that were able to be redeemed by mobile app coupon. The closest place was Green Basil. The food is ok, knowing the history of the place and it is opened up by people who used to work at Thai House so you know it's going to be affordable, and middle of the range in what your expectations are going to be.
On this night, there seemed to be many tables reserved, but no one else showing up. The male working there (I think he was a manager of some sorts) asked if we were going to be fast... What does this mean, are you telling me to eat and get out, fine, I can do that, and I was planning to do this anyways. When I sat down and looked at the menu, me and my friend were ready to order, and I showed the mobile application to the waitress server there. She quickly glanced at it, and without even looking into it, dimissed it, and rudely raised her voice in a rude town and said "we have never had this option". I told her to look at the application on my phone, it says, "redeem on phone", she dimissed me still. I asked to speak to a manager, and she still said, "no you cannot speak to my manager!".
I do not usually raise my voice back in a public place, but on this night it was well warranted. Note to whoever runs Green Basil, if a customer wants to speak to manager, you allow it, and to brush me off like this in the manner and fashion the way that it was down made me wonder why in hell's earth I even waited, and used to say good things about your place. Your food is not that good, a tad better than Thai House, but if we are talking about service, and this woman who was working here, definitely decided to shaft me with the tone she decided to use, I am happy to take my business elsewhere!
Next time, look at what your company is offering, and listen before what comes out of your mouth, to the server, and also the management there. I found better and cheaper, with much more friendly service in the food court of Crystal Mall! Thank you for making the decision for me. -

A Lunch Review:
I made it there just before the rush hit. And boy did it hit. I think the place was at least 80% full. Basically they have a simple lunch menu at $7.50 which includes a good sized dish with rice, soup and a vegetarian spring roll.
Actually there are two menu's, one is $7.50 combos, and the other one is a bit more.
I ordered from the $7.50 menu and they have 3 dishes of each Chicken, Beef and Pork. Then they vary from stir-fried to curry.
I'd say the quality is "dinner" quality because this is one of those restaurants that both lunch and dinner is good, as opposed to the restaurants that make "lunch" quality food and only really have a lunch crowd.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Edward L.
Came here on the advice of a friend. It really is hard to get decent Thai food in Vancouver.
The place is nice and clean, with an upscale feel about it. Staff were friendly. Parking is free if you go a block north.
They have a Lunch menu for 1100-1500. It comes with soup and spring roll.
I had the #24M tiger prawns with red curry paste and coconut rice ($9.95). I asked for it to be "3 peppers" spicy, but honestly, it was mild. My friend had the "1 pepper" curry and I couldn't even tell it was curry. Maybe this place had a ton of really weaksauce customers or something.
The soup was some bland cabbage soup. Being a Thai place, you'd think they'd give you tom yum. Nope.
The spring roll actually wasn't bad. The dipping sauce is pretty good.
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this place. Frankly, the food was quite disappointing. I will try elsewhere next time. -

I moved East earlier this year, and I recently discovered that I can get delivery from Green Basil! Their web site is a little ambiguous about it, but they definitely do deliver and the food is every bit as good as in the restaurant. :)
Their lunch specials are great, but if you really want to experience Green Basil you need to go for dinner and order off of the "real" menu - the lunch stuff is just a sample of what they can do.1 Previous Review: Show all »

For lunch, you definitley get a huge plate of food for under $10 and the food is decent. However, you do not get much meat in your dish as you would like.
I ordered the curry chicken rice and I only got 4 pieces of chicken. Yes, I counted. -
Review from Kat S.
Super cute Thai place with a nice decor, wonderful staff and good food.
I love that this place is always clean, and as Inga mentioned, the staff are well groomed and pleasant. The service is quick, but you don't feel rushed.
The lunch specials are definitely the way to go, though I have yet to go on a weekday when they are cheaper. Dinner last night was delicious, though not cheap. The prices aren't bad, but they lose a star for charging extra for plain rice and $3.95 for Thai iced tea.
The food is quite mild, and even though we asked for one dish mild and one medium, they both tasted as though neither had any spice. For some reason I keep dining with spice wimps, so if I go by myself again I will ask for it hot.
I appreciate the fact that you can get pretty much any dish (obviously not their special where the main is "lived crab" (that must mean past-tense... as in it was alive?)) made vegetarian. Their cashew and chili sauce dish is delish, and their curries are very creamy. The portions are pretty big when ordering for dinner, so that's nice.
If you are a tofu fan, get the deep fried tofu with peanut sauce as an appy. It's really good. -

One word: LUNCH SPECIAL! Okay, that's two words, but you get my drift.
For $7 you get a massive plate of food with rice on the side and a spring roll and a bowl of soup to start. Eating this much for lunch should be a crime.
Their lunch menu switches over to being a dinner menu at 3pm, so make sure you get there early! I arrived slightly before the switch time and they were still happy to give me the lunch special price. I ordered their yellow curry and it was massive. I ended up taking most of it home. I was already full from the soup and spring roll.
Service was quick - our food came out really fast. Definitely will be back to try more of their specials! -

This is one of my fav place for delicious and creamy thai food.
I am a huge fan of thier soup, any of them, to start.
Then my friends and I always order the seafood hotpot and lamb curry with coconut rice.
Just thinking of the delicious sauces makes me want to go right now.
I tried this place because I had a coupon, and now I keep coming back. The prices are reasonable but the food is superb! -

This place really shocked me. I've heard about green basil before, and I finally came here yesterday for dinner. Prices were decent - around $11.95-15.95. The food came very fast - and it tasted awesome! I had green curry? with eggplants and chicken (#26) - very tasty. I also ordered noodles - can't remember the name of it, but I think it was number 42. It has three peppers beside it (spicy) and it tasted awesome! I really liked everything about it. Though it was a little oily, I still really enjoyed it. I also ordered a bowl of rice - very expensive. $1.75/bowl and trust me, the bowl wasn't big.
Overall, it's worth a try. Most likely, you'll enjoy it too!
While you're at it, I suggest trying this iced tea drink - a unique blend of tea, milk and syrup. -

4 stars for quick service
3.5 stars for ambiance but tables are truly a little too close together for intimate conversation
3 stars for food
Was there for lunch. It's a great place to grab a quick bite if you live or work in the area! The restaurant was packed for Friday lunch so it's pretty popular. Altho IMO, I have tasted better Thai foods in Vancouver.
I still recommend this Thai place for lunch because they had good selection for the lunch specials and the service was fast. Place is clean and reasonably priced.
I found their spices to be a bit more Chinese rather than Thai for my beef dish. I liked their egg roll...it is a big deal that I ate the whole roll since I try to refrain from all deep fried foods these days.
This was only my first time there and I only tried 1 dish so need to sample more foods to give more feedbacks.
Been to many Thai places so I am a bit pickier and thus I only give this place 3 stars. I would still give this place another chance for the lamb curry and may update with more stars if I like :) Stay tuned! -

A friend of mine strongly recommended this little Thai place some time ago. Three of us today were really hungry, and craving for some Thai food, so we follow the recommendation and ended up in the front of Green Basil.
The decor is OK, nothing really to rave about it, but I felt comfortable. It was about 6 pm, and we don't have a reservation, so we waited for about half hour. Not bad, consider it was a Friday afternoon.
I really surprised that they have a full wine menu, and a huge, huge bar at the back. Not many Thai places that I have been to offer a good selection of liquor like they did.
We ordered Tom Kah Goong, added coconut milk makes it less sour for us compare with Tom Yum Goong. We loved it, everything is in balance, and the little bit sourness made us want more food. Little note here is the waitress. She brought two big bowl of soup at once, one for us and one for another table, She came to our table, with one hand holding on the other sour, and another hand started serving sour for us. Although there are spills on the table, but impressive balance and concentration, :D.
We also had Gaaeng Pha Naeng, it is a thick curry (spicy level: 3 peppers) with sea food. It was very good, you gotta try it if you love curry.
Another dish is Para Ram Gai, chicken with peanut sauce served on lettuce and spinach. Chicken is OK, nice and tender, with strong peanut sauce flavor. I'm not a big fan of spinach, I don't think there is enough seasoning, so it is really bland and tasteless.
The last one is huge disappointment. Bplaa Laad Phrik, it's a fish on a pan with fire heated down below. I don't think the fish is really fresh, the bad fish smell was just waaaay to much. Each of us tried it once, and leaved it on the side and never toughed again.
I will give it 4 star if they have a better fish for us. -
Review from Gina I.
Pretty standard thai menu, I'd say. I was craving Tom Kha Goong and I got it. The soup itself was spicy and full of flavour.. just how I like it. But I really wish they put straw mushrooms in the soup instead of BIG CHUNKS of white mushrooms.. Sigh.
Next up was some Pad Thai. It was good but realllly saucy. I had mine with scallops and prawn, good stuff. And then we had a coconut with pork and chunks of coconut and that was really good.
For the amount we paid (entertainment coupon!) I'd say it's a pretty good place, though I've had better Thai food before.. 4 stars because the service is pretty damn good. -

Review from Namit M.
Above standard Thai fare.
We ordered:
Beef Salad with Lime = it was pretty decent although prefer the colder version of the salad.
Lettuce wraps with Ostrich: Kudos to GB for carrying Ostrich meat. It is one of the most under rated meats out there. It was cooked to perfection although the lettuce was wilted.
Green Curry w chicken: The only weak link of the night, it was adequate and the curry was somewhat thicker than should be. Might try the red curry next time.
Service was pleasant and fast. All in all decent but not great. -
Review from A K.
this place was recommened by the hotel staff and i can surely say we didnt repent in visiting the place and having the dinner there. The place is easy to find and ambaience is good. The staff is friendly. I had the thai fried rice chicken and it was different to see that in US wherever i had the chicken its always in big pieces but here it was more of like ground chicken but the quantity and spice level is really good. We also ordered the veg fried rice/red curry. In the appetizers we had the tom yum soup and lattice wraps both came out as per the expectation. The other thing i found to be different was that there was no Soy sauce and when i asked for it the waitress was little surprised, which is pretty common to have in US, may be its the VC.
In all i will say if you are around VC and near this area and craving for thai this place is worth trying. -

Love this place for weekday lunch.
Summary:
Lunch specials = $6.95 includes small soup, rameken of salad, spring roll and entree. There are at least a dozen nice choices of entree.
Service is super quick... and the serving staff are clean, well groomed, plentiful and not a belly ring in site...
The place is clean and PACKED at lunch.
The coconut full of curry was delish, the cashew chicken entree is spicy and fresh and yummy, the half pineapple laden with chicken pineapple rice was great and my friends raved about the prawns, although sometimes the prawns are fresh, somtimes frozen.
This is a "close to the office" favourite. -
Review from Megan S.
Lunch is the thing to do here- with cheap options that will leave you stuffed. The whole lunch menu is 6.95 and I'd say there's over 20 options on that menu. I've opted for the sweet and sour chicken- not a very daring dish, but it was quite good. Many of the dishes are signified as spicy, but that's not too uncommon for thai. The vegetables in my dish had a great texture, and were not overcooked.
Service was good. I had a few water refills without having to ask. I will go again- probably for lunch! -

Came here after on a Saturday night during the Olympics. The food was okay, liked the look of the place, normally priced food (around 10-17 dollars per entree), decent portion size, and bad service.
Everyone who works here are Chinese and constantly speak Cantonese. Plus everytime someone comes in that looks of Asian descent they seem to try and speak Cantonese to them too. They left the TV on and we stayed a bit longer (10:30 ish) chatting, all the while the waitress was giving my boyfriend dirty looks (no, not the sexual kind).
The restaurant looks clean, liked the decor, the colours. No chipped plates or cups in sight. Did not like the fact that we were so close to another table though.. we were sitting next to some extremely Chinese people.
We were eating with another couple, they ordered a fresh fruit fried rice or something, and what looked like peppered beef or chicken. They said it was decent, nothing to brag about. The boyfriend had a yellow curry with a side of rice, said it was just okay. I had the phak vegetable tom yum soup.. which was okay. It just had lots of random vegetable pieces floating around in it (a snowpea, a tomato, cabbage, etc). I also had the phak vegetable lettuce wrap. I'm used to the Chinese version of this.. so it's different for me. First time I ordered a "Thai" lettuce wrap, I liked it. Tasted good, ingredients looked fresh. I would order it again since the lettuce wrap normally doesn't have a vegetarian option to it, nice change.
Anyways, I might come back for a lunch, seeing their lunch special. I wouldn't especially recommend it, but it's not horrid either. -

I found the decor in this restaurant to be very classy. It had a modern edge with a bit of a formal flair to it.
The food was prepared surprisingly fast. I think it took less than 10 minutes (maybe only 5!) from the time we ordered to when we were served. It tasted delicious and the portions were very generous.
I liked that they marked spicy items on the menu by putting a number of chili peppers next to it depending on how spicy it was. This helped me pick what to order without having to worry about an unpleasant surprise (I can't handle spice at all). -

My 2nd time there. Food was ok. I've tasted many better and more authentic Thai food in town. I have to disclose that my pork satay was not fully cooked last time I went. I didn't realize until I tasted a weird taste and can't had to chew more forcefully. The waitress was good to bring back another one plus an extra one for free. We also had the prawn with mushrooms and veggies with peanut sauce. The dish kept turning watery as we ate. Probably from the washed mushrooms. The water didn't mix with the peanut sauce and oil floating on it so it tasted weird. I probably won't go back again as there are better choices.

Review from Kal B.
first off, i love this place cuz its only a few minutes from home.. its located on Kingsway across from Metrotown (lines up with Superstore)
and i may be biased cuz i've had many good memories here.. the place i bring good friends and family if we need something close by and i know there won't be much of a wait
i love that this place has a sharp and clean-cut atmosphere.. its not like your old school typical thai place.. like the thai house by save-on in metrotown which looks run down with its decor, and dirty aquariums
i almost always get the same servers.. they must work lunch to close everyday.. they are kind and attentive
the one thing that surprises me about this place is their wine list.. usually i don't have wine with thai at other places, but they have a decent list and the prices are cheap! you can get a decent okanagan wine in the low 20's so i usually say 'don't mind if i do!'
i've been here once for lunch.. and although the menu is limited compared to dinner, the prices are super low (6.95) per dish
their dinner menu is great and a lot of choices are 'mainstream' so its a good place to bring guests that aren't too too adventurous but are willing to try.. they won't be disappointed as they walk away with their tummies filled with a hearty and satisfying meal
some things to try include (mostly CLASSICs): chicken coconut curry, chicken cashew with veggies, Tom Yum soup, shrimp cakes, Gaaeng Mat Sa Man (my current fave! its a sweet curry with ground peanuts, potato, onions and coconut milk), the stir fried sambal prawns and the sauce that they are draped in are good but i'm friggin' lazy so i hate having to take the skin off the prawns (i know i'm not the only one!), and the Phat Thai pretty standard. Their seafood is well prepared as well so i would recommend it in any of their dishes. I love anything that comes with a sauce or curry cuz after the good stuff (chicken, etc) is gone you can still drape it over your rice and enjoy every last drop!
They have a chili ranking system beside their dishes but i found that even 3 or 4 chilies are not that bad and i'm not just saying that cuz i love spicy food or something cuz i don't like it when it overpowers the dish and your mouth is on fire for the whole night.. their version of spicy is like the 'hot sauce' at taco time.. its a 97 parts water: 3 parts tobasco version of hot
SAVERS' TIP: i always see a 2for1 coupon for this place in the georgia straight every week.. and they are also in the ent book.. so you can get a superb meal for 2 for under 30 bucks total (2 entrees and drinks).. hands down you can't beat that for the quality of food and experience -

Love going to Green Basil, particularly for their lunch special which is just $6.95 for soup, salad, spring roll, an entree and rice. Their yellow curry with potato and pineapple is fantastic, along with the pineapple fried rice. Their version of Swimming Rama (chicken with spinach and peanut sauce) is a little on the cheap side, as they use mostly lettuce with a layer of spinach on top, presumably to save money. Overall, though, this is my Thai restaurant of choice in the Metrotown neighbourhood.

I've been to the Green Basil for lunch MANY times and a few times for dinner.
They have $6.95 lunch menu that includes a main dish, coconut rice, hot & sour soup, a vegetarian spring roll and house salad.
Good meal for that price. It can get busy during the lunch hour but the service is still good. Waiter will come by to fill water glasses and check to make sure everything is OK.
My favorite is the Green Curry Chicken with eggplants in coconut milk.
It may be spicy for some people, but I like spicy foods.
The chicken with cashews and Thai chili sauce is pretty good, too.
Both of these are on the lunch menu but can also be ordered as full size plates on the dinner menu. The cost is between $10 - $15 on the dinner menu.
My friends and I also tried the seafood combo appetizer platter (cost is about $21). This includes shrimp cakes, fish cakes, calamari and breaded shrimp. I have to say these were a disappointment. They weren't terrible but they aren't a MUST have. Not at that price.
For dinner we ordered the Bammei Rommitr (stir fried egg noodles with cabbage, bean sprouts and beef). This was OK. It's a safe item to order for those who can't handle the spicyness of Thai food.
Fresh Fruit Fried rice was served in a pineapple. Cute. One of my friends really liked it. Me, not so much. But I don't really like fruit in my hot meals. Again, this is a dish for the spice-a-phobe.
Pad Thai is OK. It's just a noodle dish without alot of other things going on so I find it kind of plain. Not exciting. However, I have friends who order this every time we go to the Green Basil.
Go for lunch. It's worth the $6.95 ! -

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. All the food was really good and we felt really good afterwards too. The only thing I would comment on is that it wasn't the best service there. We went in for dinner and it took them a while to take our order and we were constantly trying to get someones attention. But we would definitely go back.
