Greekfest, this isn't easy for me, so I'm just going to say it, and hope for the best: I love you.  From the first moment I saw your beautiful self, with so much to offer, I knew what I felt was real.  Now that I've known you for a few years, my affection has only grown stronger with time.  There are so many wonderful things about you, I don't even know where to start.  You're an excellent cook, you love music and dancing (you've got some amazing moves), and you always show me a great time.  The tour you took me on of your gorgeous (inside and out) Greek Orthodox church was very interesting from a historical perspective, not to mention visually stunning.  And we always have a fun time shopping together, winding our way through the selection of local vendors selling a variety Greek items, from spices and oils to clothing.  And you even like children!  The carnival games you provide offer fun for the whole family.  Most of all I enjoy listening to the live music you play, and the lively dance performances that grace your  stage.

I think we should announce our love to the world and get married.  Just don't tell my fiance, he might get a little jealous.

I feel like I've missed out on the awesomeness that the other reviewers are gushing about. My experience with the greek fest was anything but fun.

We went on sunday afternoon. By the time we got there, they had run out of all food except for salad. There were some desserts, but without the main course what's the point?
Outside, there was one lonely booth selling some interesting things, and a poorly lit stage with a band playing in the corner of a tent. The kids' area looked like it had been set up by the kids themselves. Needless to say we didn't stick around; if the tickets weren't free, we would have asked for our money back.

It's hard to imagine that Greekfest has been happening for 25 years!

From a small celebration of Greek living, it has grown to become the premiere cultural festival in the Halifax area.  For four days (starting this year - previous years were three days only), all things Greek converge on the grounds of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church.

We've been going to Greekfest for about five years, maybe six.  Even just five years ago, the event was much more subdued than what it has grown to be in the last two or three years.  Originally, there was basically food and Greek-themed entertainment - dancing, bands, a DJ dropping Greek tunes.

These days, Greekfest has become a full-fledged destination attraction.  Entering the grounds leads you through a small vendor's court with everything from Greek tea, spices and olive oils (the European Pantry usually has a booth here) to fun games for the kiddos.

Next comes the food.  Generally, there's a full lamb on the roast, although we've never bought tickets on it.   Our tastes run towards either the souvlaki and donairs available in the beer tent, or the full Greek platter from just inside the church basement.  A dessert buffet is also set up on the far side of the basement, with Greek coffee available at the far end, just before the exit to the patio.

Greekfest is an opportunity to come together with strangers and celebrate the arrival of summer.  Sharing tables is mandatory, as there's never enough seating to go around.  (If you're smart, one of the adults will take the kids to find seats, while the other waits in line for food - or beer!)

Here's a tip:  in past years, one paid admission got you entrance for all days of the festival.  Another tip:  park at the Halifax Shopping Centre Annex and take the shuttle bus that runs twice an hour.  Parking is absolutely insane near the church grounds, and the dedicated boys (and girls!)  in blue are handy with their ticket books.
