This place is totally fantastic. I wandered in off Roncesvalles a few months ago, having been drawn in by the amazing transformation of the old Venus Florist place! It's stunning inside, and they've created a really relaxing and inspired vibe. In my experience, haircuts here take a long time and maybe cost a bit more than I'm used to paying, but are worth every penny.
I've never had my hair cut before like it's *my* hair -- it was a new experience! I have fine, wavy hair, and in the past at other salons what normally happened was that was straightened and cut beautifully into a style that I could never reproduce without straightening my hair (and even then, not, because I couldn't straighten it as well as the stylist). Now it just looks great wavy! I seriously just wash and condition it, put some stuff in there and am ready to go. My friends and family have commented that it's the best haircut ever. I've only ever worked with Lisa, who is lovely, but from the looks of it, everyone in there knows their stuff.
This place is a new Roncesvalles gem. It's independently owned and run, and is worth checking it out on Google Streetview to see what the place *used* to look like before you go in, so that you can see the extent of the transformation. Keep it up, ladies and men!! -

Toronto's best named salon has moved!
I had an appointment to see my favourite stylist at Grateful Dead's new location in the Roncesvalles Village. The size of the new salon is about the same as their former one with a few decor differences.
The owner did a wonderful job creating a comfortable and beautiful space - check out the velvet skull heads wallpaper on the back wall! So cute!
Apart from that, it's the same nice staff going, great work; now in a great neighbourhood!Listed in: My locals

I've gone here twice now on the recommendation of a friend of mine. I'm not a fan of over styled hair, now do I want something super high maintenance. Both times I went, I left with a cool haircut that didn't look freshly cut and has grown out pretty well.
The other reviewers have given a pretty good description of the insides so I'll spare you.
The one thing that did surprise me the first I went was the lack of small talk from the stylist. At first I found it odd, but then I liked not having to chat and risk inhaling hair! I'll be "heading" back soon.Listed in: Soooo Toronto (in a good way!)

I've been searching Toronto for 2 years for a new hair place to call home, and I finally found it at Grateful Head. I've been to about 4 other places in Toronto. While I liked the cuts I got at Coupe Bizarre, I couldn't stand the vibe, to cool for school employees, being moved from a stylist to a colourist, and the music. I have been to other places where the vibe is nice, but the cuts...not so much.
FINALLY Holly at Grateful Head satisfyed my needs. Thorough (hello! dying brows to match new hair colour!), great cuts, good atmosphere and great music. I love that she can look at me, say "I know exactly what I want to do", and have it turn out freaking awesome? SO worth it!Listed in: ROTDs! Holla!, Where I Get My Hair Did

Went to Grateful Head since it's around the corner from where I live and everyone seemed to be raving about it. I'm not too fussy about my hair and don't mind spending money to a cut that i'll love.
I was excited that one of the salons I had heard so many great things about was a two minute walk away from my place.
The staff generally speaking were friendly but my particular stylist seemed "too cool" for her job and for life in general. She seemed completely disinterested in colouring, cutting and styling my hair, and appeared to want to be anywhere other than where she worked.
She didn't cut my hair as asked and seemed to be rushing me through to get to her next client.
She bad-mouthed all the different people living downtown, blowing off all the "hipsters" in the neighbourhood (when from what I could tell, she herself was in the hipster mold). She bad-mouthed the photographer who had taken the pics out front of the store. She bad-mouthed various cities around Canada. She bad-mouthed various aspects and people who are a part of Toronto's scene.
It felt downright snotty, like all the mean cool girls had gotten together to cut people's hair and be snarky behind their backs later.
The colour washed out within a week to an orange colour (it was originally a dark brown) that looked cheap. This was unfortunate since the price tag for a cut and colour with tax and tip was pretty hefty.
That being said, the girls who greeted me at the counter were sweet and helpful and the space itself is quite pretty. I've considered going back to try a different stylist since maybe I just got someone on an off-day. -

I've been going to Grateful Head for about two years now. I love the salon vibe without the attitude. I've always been happy with my cut and colour, and I've gone from platinum blonde flat ironing, back to my natural dark brunette and curls. I love that there's new artwork on the walls each time I visit, they have a great selection of magazines to peruse while your colour is setting, they have stylists that know how to give great curly cuts, that sometimes the owner will surprise you with a complimentary glass of wine, and to top all that off I have discovered many new favourite bands from their playlist!

I got a pretty good cut here back in the day. The stylist was real patient and super sweet despite the fact that I was being scissor- stabbingly picky. I like their laid back vibe and their complimentary "be grateful" buttons....and they had Wanda Jackson playing. I like it.

I have been to grateful head a few times ( I am under a pseudo name here). I will not be returning. the first time I was very happy with my haircut. the second time I wasn't thrilled . I thought I wouldn't go back but then I thought well , we all have bad days.; So I returned. I HATED my cut. I will not return. I will not recommend the place. I wonder if maybe my stylist only knows one type of cut and basically gives you the same. If you do decide to go there , then I suggest you tell them up front you want to finish with a straight blow dry. I have been meek about insisting on that and i paid for it. Perhaps if they know they cant hide the cut behind curls they will give it a good cut. My hair is still not long enough to fix so I will have to wait a few more weeks. I can tell you , it wont be back to Grateful Head. .. my head was anything but Grateful.
