- grassroots provides conscious shoppers an opportunity to buy chemical-free, and natural cleaning products (in addition to a number of random products)
- if you show up with your own refillable containers (or use empty ones they provide), they've got bulk cleaning supplies like dish detergent, laundry detergent, toiler cleaner, glass cleaner (aka vinegar), etc. it's a little more expensive than standard commercial stuff, but it's worth it.
- i'll admit it. i'm not a tree hugger. but i do like the environment. and animals. and trees. and stuff. -

I'd come here if I didn't have anywhere else to go to find what I wanted for an eco-friendly and/or organic alternative.
It's a store with stuff that you can't find in other health food stores, but they don't have the space to carry the range and variety needed.
I like it, but I think their stuff is somewhat overpriced, even for being eco-friendly or organic, because I can get the same items cheaper elsewhere (just wander up and down Bloor, you'll find one or two other alternatives). -

I first went to this store because I heard they were the only place in the city that sold Simple's eco-friendly sneakers (which they do). In fact, they just got in Simple's fall boots and they are super cool.
But the store is much more than just a hemp clothing/eco-shoe shop. They sell environmental products ranging from recyclable notepads and paper, paraben-free and biodegradable soaps and lotions to natural fiber towels...the list goes on.
Best of all though is the "Wall of Soaps" at the back of the store where you can bring in your old empty bottles and refill from their bulk supply (this includes dish washing liquid, laundry soap, hand soap...). Just think about how much plastic that saves! -

Lately, every which way I turn I hear claims of sustainable living products here, or environmentally friendly stuff there, and I try, like many to do my part. I bike; I sort my recycling and reusable goods; I buy local...yet I tend to feel I don't do enough. A store called Grassroots gave me a big complex about this and maybe that isn't such a bad thing...
Located in the very vibrant Annex community, Grassroots has EVERYTHING you can think of when it comes to environmental products. I can't afford a lot of the things in this store, but I do enjoy browsing and learning about the many eco-safe alternatives out there.
For instance, did you know that a bedroom free of toxic chemicals and allergy causing bacteria makes for a better and more healthful nights sleep? Bed sheets are often processed and dyed with chemicals and bleaches that can harm a person's slumber, and Grassroots has toxic and chemical free bedding. Very cool.
There are also beauty and bath products, solar power gadgets, books, and cleaning products that all provide alternatives to chemical and energy inefficient housewares. The one thing I do go out of my way to buy at Grassroots is the Druid Citronella Spray/Cream that is the perfect to ward of mosquitos and keep that awful Deet taste and smell away. Sure, you'll smell like citronella all weekend on the campground, but you will not have ONE bite!
Certain things are definitely pricey such as the personal care items like deodorants, shampoos and "ladies products." When comparing the price of these to the grocery store, your wallet will stretch a bit. I guess it all depends on what you'd like to compromise.
Grassroots is more than just a store. They have a great buzz around them that gets people talking and have many events that surround awareness of being environmentally conscious. And, on weekends, bikers get a free breakfast! -

There are some things you just don't even think it's possible to find a green alternative for. Then you go to Grassroots and feel like a bit of a jackass. Honestly, this store will open your eyes as to the types of items you buy and use every day and what their potential impact on the environment is.
While I don't tend to overdo it with the earth-friendly items because of a few personal views on the subject and the associated overall cost with such, I do find that there are some things which are just as good to buy that are earth friendly. And this is usually the first stop I will make. For one thing, products using recycled materials are often cheaper, as are bulk items like soaps. Also, I find a lot of items are much better if you have any kind of skin sensitivities like I do, and that's where natural products are also much preferable. We can't all be heroes with every single purchase, but little choices make a difference too. And that's what Grassroots really represents.
