Maaan, how could a person *not* give Granville Island 5 stars? It's an island, people. It does what it do, and do it does well. You don't need to be loaded with dollah bills to enjoy this place -- instead you can just wander. Window shop. Stop to smell the roses (and not even those proverbial ones). Visit some artist studios. Sample some almond bark. Head to Emily Carr library and peruse. Sit on a bench and enjoy.

And if you happen to have even just a coupla colourful bills to lay down, grab a loaf o' bread, a few fresh veggies, a lil' bit o stinky cheese, and maybe even some cured meat (if you're so inclined, which I am. Always) and cop your pretty lil' self a spot on the hill and pic the nic outta this place.

    It's Granville Island. It's great.

    Funkiest place ever:

    - Sitting on the chairs outside the Public Market enjoying lunch and street musicians on a sunny day while the seagulls eye your food intensely and are willing to fight for scraps.

    - The cement trucks coming out of the big scary factory are painted like a strawberry or a bunch of asparagus. Not so scary now.

    - There is a little entrance into the Kids Market for little humans. Don't worry, giant children like me are also welcomed. I've actually never bought anything from the Kids Market, but it's my favourite place to browse... and enjoy the impromptu puppet show the bf puts on.

    - Improv Centre is good random fun. Emphasis on random. Right up my alley though.

    - Emily Carr will sometimes have student exhibits in their lobby area. Errr, just too artsy fartsy for me.

    - The myriad of shops and studios showcasing their interesting trinkets and dealios. My favourite is the guy blowing glass. He must get hot in the summer time.

    - The Sandbar Restaurant and its claim to fame - the cougar hangout. No, the SPCA will not be involved. [Disclaimer - can't personally testify as to how true this is.]

    - The water park has 3 fire hydrants. Now THAT is funky.

    Good place,

The thing I like about Granville Island is you don't have to have money to go have a nice day here, even if your broke its nice to browse and if its nice out you can usually see a busker or 2 to watch. Not even to mention the views.

Great spot to kill some time.  Lots of local artists, lots of great food, unique and independent shops, and although a bit touristy some really excellent prices during the post-Christmas season.   Put it on your short list, especially considering the free parking.  I imagine it is great during the summer.

Great place to visit.  Great place to people watch.  It's a very market-y area.  And despite the heavy traffic, Granville Island is still very clean.

And there are tons of things to buy here.  A few things to do.  You can hang out at the bar and watch the boats go by.

    Have some Gelato or Coffee.

Take a mini tour of the aquabus.

Hang out and watch the street performers...

    I like Granville Island!

Home to artists, tourists and locals alike, Granville Island is one of Vancouver's must-see spots for any first-time visitor. You'll find this unique community tucked beneath the Granville Street bridge, and it's complete with a bustling market, artist studios, gift shops, theatres, street performers, and the Kids Only market, which is heaven for children (and adults who are still kids at heart). There truly is something for everyone, and there's just nowhere else in the city quite like it.

Vancouver's most prestigious and well-respected art school, Emily Carr, is located on Granville Island. This combined with the presence of a few of the city's best theatres, there's definitely an abundance of artsy folk here. If you're looking for modern, edgy art you likely won't find it (although Commercial Drive and Main Street have it in spades). If you're  looking for West Coast native artwork, pottery or woodwork, you've found the right place.

If you're planning on visiting Granville Island, be sure to come during the daytime, as many of the businesses and studios close around 6pm during most of the year. Parking can be a royal pain in the ass, so it's best to take public transit if at all possible. If you're feeling especially adventurous, a great way to make the trip is via the Aquabus, which has a stop right beside the Granville Island Market. I just can't get enough of those little rainbow-coloured boats!

Granville Island is a must visit for any tourist to Vancouver. It trumps Seattle's Pike Place Market anyday except we don't have a guy that throws a salmon around for show.

There's so much to do on the Island, you can easily spend the whole day with a wide array of activities. You can browse through the public market, shop for arts and crafts, buy fresh fish and produce, enjoy nice seafood dinner, drink a local brew, watch theatre performance, rent a boat, etc.

If you are the brave type, you can rent a kayak from one of the marinas on the west side of the Island. Ecomarine Ocean Kayak Centre offers a 3 hour lesson for $76.

My recommendations for Granville Island: go to JJ Beans for coffee, grab your favorite pastry at Stuarts Bakery or bread at La Baguette et L'echalote, go for a mini cruise in Aquabus and end the night with a honey lager at Granville Island Brewing.

Granville Island is funky cool place, somewhat like a bustling flea market with everything from food stalls to posters to jewelry, knick-knacks, and lots of First Nations art. I must say it was a little confusing figuring out how to get there and where to park. I thought I'd be able to use my navigation on my iPhone until I realized I'd have to pay out the rear to have my iPhone turned on in a foreign country. That was my first mistake!

My second mistake was thinking there were tons and tons of tourist activities to do in Vancouver, therefor causing me to rush through Granville Island. Don't make this mistake! Vancouver is an extremely beautiful place but as far as sightseeing activities go, I found it somewhat limiting!

My third mistake was going to the Sandbar for lunch on Granville Island. Re: Sandbar review. I should have planned to eat lunch/snack my way through the food stalls and just grab a drink on the patio at the Sandbar. After a full lunch at the Sandbar, all I could do was lust after the food stall finds!

Since these are all user errors, I will not penalize Granville Island itself. The only real complaint about GI is that I didn't find really anything of value other than the food. Most of the souvenirs were the same as anywhere else in Vancouver. There was nothing especially unique. And the same thing can be said of the jewelry and other items. For such a quirky, neat place, I expected to find a lot more unique treasures.

This has to one of the greatest gems Vancouver has to offer.

There is something for everyone here, from the public market, restaurants, cafes, shopping, and people watching.
I love coming down here and playing food tourist for a few hours. Some of the best butchers, bakers, and fish mongers can be found here.
If you're not looking for that, you've got wine merchants, candy makers, broom makers, umbrella makers, and hammock makers. And if you still haven't found what you're looking for, keep exploring and you'll come across something wonderful.

After working up a thirst exploring take a load off and take a tour at the Granville Island Brewery. Learn a little about the beer making process and kick back with a couple refreshing samples at the end.

If you've got a lazy dog dangling Sunday on your hands, you should spend it down at Granville Island.

This is an excellent place to visit when in Vancouver. I stopped off here on my bike and wasn't disappointed.

There's plenty to see here from local unique stores to the amazing Public Market which was packed to the rafters. There's food to eat immediately, food to buy and food you don't necessarily recognize. It's all good.

There's also plenty to see/do when you have a spare weekend day with nothing in particular planned. It ate up a good few hours for me!

    A Tourist's Must! and a Local's Treat!

Been to the world reknowed Pike Place's Market in Seattle? Had a good time? Visit Vancouver's Granville Island and you've set an all new world records high for Best Market!

The Market itself: Tons of plump over sized cherries and berries, and whatever else is in season! Meats, Fish, Cheese, baked goods, flowers.. omgosh the list is never ending! What differentiates this from other World Reknown markets? THE VIEW! THE CABIN FEEL! THE VARIETY! THE CLEANLINESS! haha sorry.. i think i'm getting overly excited :P
The Don'ts - Wouldn't recommend going to eat/eat at the food court there, as they charge a premium for being in the Market, and the food is less than medicore. If you're hungry.. and want to eat there.. whats recommended are the baked goods/desserts/pot pies/ and gelatos! Don't eat chinese or indian there :(

Don't sell yourself short while you visit. So go explore! You'll be able to find The Kids Market, Water park, Little boutiques, Restaurants, Standup Comedy Show, Street artists, Cute floating homes.. and much more!!

    TIP: Don't forget your camera!

Like many locals, I grew up going to Granville Island for the Children's Festival and to entertain relatives from out of town. This place is a tourist attraction for a reason. The market is beautiful, and there is something for everyone (produce, flowers, bakeries, delis, seafood, candy, coffee, artisan stalls, etc). After you explore the market, be sure to explore some of the other local artisan shops and art galleries on the Island.

Granville Island is very kid friendly. The have one of the best toy shops around and a great water park that is open in the summer as well. There is also a large assortment of street performers at any given time who are always sure to entertain.

If it's nice out, you can grab food at the Market and then sit by the water and watch kayakers, seagulls, and boats go by.

There is also a ton of nightlife on Granville Island, including the infamous and amazing Granville Island Brewery, the Arts Club Theatre (where there is always an entertaining play showing), and numerous restaurants as well.

Granville Island is easy to reach by bus, bike, Aqua Bus (if you have kids try taking the Aqua Bus across the water from downtown, they will love it), foot (you can walk along the water to and from Kits Beach), and also car (most parking is metered during the day but free parking can be found if you are savvy).

Granville Island is one of the top attractions in Vancouver and I highly recommend checking it out.

We had a jolly good time here....great time! It was fun walking around the unique stores, but the best time was in the Public Market. It's a certain MUST DO/SEE while in Vancouver. We tried different foods, but one word of warning when going to eat outside....order the food take away or cover it well.
I was attacked by one of the aggressive sea gulls upside the head, then several more went for my plate of food. There was a collective gasp from the crowd. lol  Oh, well. The Oriental House gave me another plate for half price, which they didn't need to do, but it was very nice of them.
They had a Pierogy eatery, organics like you wouldn't believe, pastries from heaven....oh, I could go on. A fun place that my entire family enjoyed!

Give yourself several hours to explore everything here.

+ Come hungry!! Great Public Market. Huge focus on produce and food.
+ Live music and entertainers throughout the park
(TIP) You can find street parting close to 2nd Avenue right outside the Island, and can quickly walk to the island. Don't try to park inside unless you like waiting in lines of cars trying to get out the 1 bridge (for busy weekends).
+ Railspur Alley had a lot of local artist galleries, and was interesting to check out.
+ The market courtyard was a busy place to eat lunch, but had a nice view.

One of the more touristy areas of Vancouver. Reminds me of Seattle's public market but obviously not as well known. The pier area is a nice place to sit outside for lunch or just look at the bridge and boats sailing by. The only downside is parking can be a hassle especially on the weekends. There is free parking available for 1-2 hours depending on the spot.

Granville Island is a pretty dope place to chill on a sunny day. There's a whole market filled with delicious things to eat ranging from all parts of the planet to all types of cuisine. If you just want to get some local fruit and sit on the dock and chow down, you can do that too! I got myself a big old ice cream and rubbed it all over the BF's face, it was hilarious! I also bought some fresh pasta to take home for dinner and it was deeeeeelicious!

There are local buskers who play instruments and comedy acts that perform on the streets to get your toes tappin' and your wallets openin'.  The Spanish guitar player is amazing! There are plenty of artsy stores to wander into when you're just walking around, and there's a little pond with ducks and turtles that bask on the rocks.

You can drive down (but parking can be brutal) so a better idea is to take a bus, or the little walk-on ferry that costs $5 for round trip, or if you want to go back regularly you can get a booklet $18 for ten trips. Score!

What a great find on a recent visit to Vancouver!  We stopped here on the way out of town and next time need to plan on spending the entire day here! We only had a couple of hours, but managed to experience the small brewery (which wasn't our favorite), the Kid's Market and got to spend some time in the Public Market. Definitely want to bring the grandkids back to shop/hang out in the Kid's Market. I think they will feel special to have their own entrance to the Market, shops that just cater to their likes, a play area to hopefully not get lost in and bathrooms scaled to their size. The Public Market inside Granville Island was very impressive with a wide variety of wares and a fair amount of organic produce and treats, which always catches my eye. I scored on a deal for organic Portabello muchrooms at the South China Seas Trading Co. for $3.50/gram and discounts for buying larger quantities. Those are always hard to find, so of course I bought quite a few. We loved all the theatre opportunities and the diverse selection of gift shops mixed with actual industry. My hubby (who works in Aerospace) was entranced with a small machine shop that was tossed in the mix and had to drag me out in the rain to see the shop. Parking is problematic, so if you can take public transportation, that would be advisable. Some of the paystalls weren't cooperating with ours and others payments and it took some creative maneuvers to get them to accept our money. But, all in all, a very satisfying time was spent by the two wandering tourists at Granville Island and we hope to come back again!

Take a little boat over to this quaint island and enjoy small art shops, jewelry, and a covered market that offers all kinds of produce, cheeses, baked goods, and other confections. Worth at least a few hours while you're in the area. Also, there are plenty of places to sit and eat your fruit or drink your coffee.

Just so you know, I LOVE COVERED MARKETS LIKE GRANVILLE'S. Definitely one of my favorite things to do when I travel! Why doesn't every city have one of these???

    Vancouver is already pretty awesome.
The people the environment, the air, the sunlight all pretty awesome.

Then I was taken to Granville Island and then introduced to the Granville Island Brewery... SUPER AWESOME!!!

I mostly enjoyed the open air market with the fresh staple of offerings.  It was like a food bazaar.  We need something like this in LA, with artisian stalls.

The island is a tourist spot for sure, but it didn't feel like it because it didn't disappoint or come off as a tourist trap.

I wish I could be there now, one day.

I also found a cool ethnic musical instruments store here in Granville Island.  I must return!

Granville Island is exactly what I want it to be.

It's a pleasant place to grab some local veg, meat and cheese for a picnic or every day.

It's an artist supported world where potters, painters and more come to share their works.

    It's a Vancouver icon.

It's a hub of local theatre troupes and venues.

It's my favourite place to have a drink on the patio and watch the sun set over the Burrard Street Bridge.

I love Granville Island, it is more practical than some might assume because it is quite touristy, but it is a fabulous place to get produce and meat (a bit more expensive than most markets in the city) and there is an amazing soup shop (Stock Market) and some amazing cheese and flower places.

The artist galleries throughout Granville Island are fabulous, they are absolutely the best places to get pottery in Vancouver and the haberdashery in the Net Loft is really the best place for hats I've found.

Prices are slightly higher at Granville Island, you pay for the charm but it is absolutely a must see in Vancouver.

I love Granville Island! I like walking around Granville Island on a sunny day, enjoying the waterfront, the views of the city, and the music from street performers. It is a great place to take out-of-towners.

The market is awesome -- a little on the expensive side but really nice produce, fish, chocolate & baked goods, and other assorted products. My favourite food shop is the one that sells the pate & headcheese. The other shops are really fun -- unique shops with nice items. Beadworks is fantastic (beautiful beads & great staff). Paper Ya has the cutest things! The children's pavilion is really fun too... even for a grown up!

Granville Island is an island you can drive to!

There are dozens of artists' studios where you can see glass being blown or wooden decoration being handcrafted by the actual proprietors. It's the ideal place to pick up an eclectic souvenir for your eccentric aunt.

The Public Market is a mix of fresh fruit & veggie stands (I've heard the locals come here to pick up ingredient's for tonight's dinner), cases of local meats & cheeses & a food court where the weary tourists can grab a bite. I've been here several times & remember a particular trip I took with the ladies in my family; we were craving Mexican food, so we grabbed burritos & tamales from La Tortilleria. Yes, we left SF (home of the "Mission Street Burrito") just to eat burritos in Vancouver! (FYI: their food was not so bad...)

The Wharf is a picturesque area to sip coffee from one of the vendors inside. Check out the boats & take a few pictures here.

Granville Island is a touristy destination (it reminds me of the Ferry Plaza or SF's Fisherman's Wharf) but you must visit when you're in Vancouver. You can easily spend half your day getting lost in the food, the views & the artsy scene here.

P.S. Parking (especially on the weekends) can be a bit of a battle, but there are other ways of getting to the island (Aquabus, trolley drop off, etc.)

Amazing place to wander around and kill an hour or two. Lots of different buildings to check out, each housing different restaurants and shops. When I'm in Vancouver, I actually come here usually twice, it's the first destination when I arrive, and I usually visit once more before I leave Canada. Parking can be limited, and narrow, crowded roadways make driving around the island slow-go. So just find the first parking spot, park your clunker, and the island is easily walked.(There's also public transit like the Aquabus.) Watch out for pedestrians, because some of the streets are narrow, there's no room for sidewalks, and the tourists tend to walk right in the middle of the roadway.

The public market and food hall are awesome. Fresh produce, i found some of the largest loquat's I've ever laid eyes on. I got a nutella and strawberry crepe from the crepe stall right next to the east entrance - it was really rich and awesomely delicious. I've also had lunch at the fish and chips stall in the food hall, crisp breading, and perfectly golden chips, awesome! After you get your food, you can head out to the big patio that overlooks the water and eat out there. It's really laid back and family friendly. Always tons of families and tourists out there enjoying the (hopefully, but rare) sunny days. Sometimes they have local high school show choirs performing which is nice for families and adds a local flare to the tourist trap.

Great views, neat shops, and lots of alleys to get lost in--woohoo!  I wish more had been open when we were there (some were by appointment only), but still nice for a couple hours of exploring.  You can grab lunch from the market, but it's a little pricey so you might want to just bring your food and sit outside with everyone else.

Oh, and speaking of, I loved the numerous places to sit and the random musicians.  There was a great cellist/harpist duo when I was there.  You could turn corners and find a whole new style of music!

This place kind of reminds me of Pike Place Market, but more covered.

I came here with my orchestra buds on the last day of our orchestra trip, as well as to pick up a late lunch.

We explored the area, and browsed food shops, snack carts, candy shops, drink stands, produce carts, ice cream and bakeries.

I decided to get a piece of 'big island' pizza from a random pizza place.  It was a generous slice.  Fresh, hot, with a soft and fluffy crust.  Probably the fluffiest crust I've ever had. The toppings were a mix of cheeses, oregano, pineapple, and Canadian bacon.  I'm a huge fan of Hawaiian pizza, and this was pretty good!

My other friends got pizza too, as well as fish & chips, Chinese food, sushi, and bubble tea.

There was a lot of entertainment going on, and it was so fun to watch it all.

    I'd come back!

If you are visiting Vancouver, you have to take the bus or boat over to Granville Island..its nice there..They have a marketplace where you can grab a bite and many restaurants and breweries for you to enjoy.

A must stop when visiting Vancouver especially if you are a foodie.  Hailing from Seattle, I describe this place as a mix of Pike Market and Seattle Center attractions crammed into one location except being a bit larger and much much cleaner.
This place is extremely attractive.  The public market is very extensive offering all sorts of goodies from cured meats like elk sausage to real Montreal style bagels.  They have ample play area for the toddlers in your group.  The wharf gives you great views of the water and of downtown Vancouver.  They also sport many arts and crafts booths and kiosks.  Parking can be challenging and some folks choose to cross False bay on the little ferry painted like a Lifesavers candy roll (red, yellow, orange, etc.)

    Beautiful waterfront...
Eclectic mix of stores, eateries, bakery, ice cream store and .. IMPROV!!! =D *love improv shows*

My friend and I went here at night...when the cityscape behind the waterfront is lit up... WOW spectacular and the bridge is beautiful!!!

An interesting thing that we saw was that one of the bakeries was passing out leftover bread to those who wanted it at the end of the day... huge crowd of people gathered there.

    Beware of birds!

Paid parking only... parking overall in Vancouver isn't great.

One of the best places to visit in Vancouver, BC.

The place is engrossed with lots of shopping, restaurants and pubs, apparently there's a brewery, lots of fruit and veggies, and delicacies available at the marketplace.

I recommend spending the whole day here. You can literally spend 4 hours alone at the Granville Market Place since there is so much to see in there! (plus the great views).

Parking is either outside where there are individual parking spots, or in the parking garage (no free parking at all on the island). If you're planning to stay the whole day here, do purchase an all-day ticket because you'll save a lot more than purchasing every hour.

Overall, if I were to come back here again, I would spend my whole day here and visit more of the stores that are surrounding the island.

Walk along the water, and get yourself a gelato. If there is an exhibit at the Emily Carr, I suggest you check that out. Although much of the things to do in Granville Island (whether it be food or shopping) is pricey, you'll enjoy having a look around.

you must check out the bakery, right in the busker square! Sit down and eat a lovely croissant while watching a performance!

Not from Vancouver, I heard a lot about this place. Never been till now. Just like St. Lawrence Market in Toronto except there's a Fishermans' Warf nearby.

Granville Island Brewery to buy beer if you're into that (I'm not, so I didn't). Some wine shops. Some touristy Native arts and crafts and souvenir stores.

Overall, Granville Island is great for tourists. Lots of people lining up at the different fast food places. Everything looked pretty good. Some of the highlights were (the über pretentious) Granville Island Tea Company, the Perogy Place (that I did not try but there was a line up), the brewery... Among other places that looked quite good. There was a fresh donut section, and a bunch of artisan products and art. The artisan products looked a bit pricey. I don't think I would go out of my way to go here very often but I enjoyed myself while I was there.

A place really worth going to though is the Fishermans' Warf. You can buy fresh/frozen fish off a boat! I got a frozen headless whole pink salmon for $8.50. That seems like a good deal. No packaging, just a white bag. Might want to bring your own bags though because there was holes in the one I got. If you're into fresh fish at a good price and don't mind going out of your way, this cash only dock is a great place to buy some fish. I'm definitely gonna go back there.
