This was recommended to us by the hotel staff, and we went there every day while in Vancouver. I miss it. I want to go back to Vancouver just for Granville Island.
The people are friendly (I'm from NE USA so everywhere else is friendlier by comparison -HA!) and the produce is fresh and reasonably priced. We got some absolutely delicious cheeses and meats, and one of the bakeries sells an almond croissant that I still dream about... I think it was Stuart's bakery.
I also really enjoyed the artisans who had stands - and the artists varied from one day to the next. Unique and distinctive jewelry, photography, accessories, etc. Evidently the vendors vary daily/weekly.
Just go there - it is a part of visiting Vancouver, a lovely and delightful city with equally lovely and delightful people.

Oh Granville Island Market, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. No seriously, I'm gonna count them:

    1) by food.  so many delicious, fresh options at their many restaurants, delis, butchers, fish stores, vegetable stands... the list goes on. If you want an unusual ingredient, Granville Island is a good place to go

    2) by art.  art galleries abound at Granville Island, from pottery to painting to jewellery, there's always something pretty to look at. And even if you can't afford anything (like me) it's still a lot of fun to peruse

    3) by theatre. Granville Island has several theatres, including the arts club, and so there's always bound to be a good play on.

    4) by location. Granville Island is beautiful- it's situated on the water, which makes it a romantic date spot, or a wonderful family outing.

How do I not love thee?
    1) by cost. Everything is more expensive at Granville Island (although you can score some deals on food items there, which are about the same cost as Safeway, but much, much better). You're guaranteed to find overpriced items there, so buyer's beware.

Overall, get thyself to Granville Island and enjoy a wander around a city landmark.

I'm a Seattleite, and we're trying to milk the function and appeal of our own well-known public market down here. Pike Place Market is quite the historical and social centerpiece for our downtown, and our tourist trade. So the comparisons are inescapable in my mind, and they were certainly invited by at least one merchant this morning when she found out where I live.

Assessing it purely as a market, Granville Island wins easily over Pike Place.
For historical and culinary appeal, Pike Place takes the overall vote, with so many good restaurants in such a quirky old setting.

First, I'll say that the street signage on the way in could have been more helpful to those of us navigating purely by use of paper maps. We zig-zagged and doubled back a little bit, but that's not the Market's fault. We could have planned ahead and mapped out a route for ourselves.

Once you get in, you have to hustle for parking and keep your eyes open, but it's probably not as bad (and certainly not as spendy) as Pike Place. Inside, this place is what a market should be. It's purpose-built, which has to help. The crowds move easily, and the cases and stalls easily display their wares to you without impeding the flow of foot traffic.

The vendors here are a nice mix of all the culinary delights--butchers, cheesemongers, bakers, producers, chocolatiers, and so on. Getting through all the bakeries alone could take a year, and ten pants sizes. I found great meats and chocolates, and the friends with me found amazing pastries, produce, and pasta. We barely touched the wine, and ignored the housewares and other specialty items. Just coming here for the groceries would be worth countless repeat visits. Every vendor we spoke to was cheerful and knowledgable, and everybody seemed to have something for sale that made me want to take a bunch home.

I can't recommend the Granville Island Public Market as a good place to eat. For the past couple of years a large part of the indoor seating has been blocked off for "remodelling", but I've never seen any progress made on that project. As it stands currently, there are literally more food vendors than indoor tables.

Yesterday my fiancée and I went to Granville Island to stock up on spices and decided to eat some lunch while there. We both ordered food and walked the entire food court area looking for seating. After about fifteen minutes we gave up and decided to eat outside.

I took three or four steps outside before getting attacked by two or three enormous seagulls, some of the largest I've ever seen. One flew straight at my face, and the other landed on my arm knocking my plate over. These are some of the largest gulls I've ever seen in my life, and it's no wonder. Numerous vendors sell pouches of bird food with the explicit purpose of encouraging you to go outside and feed them.

I'm not usually one to complain in forums like this, but this was a very scary experience and I think it's important to warn others about it. Especially if you have small children, do not come here to eat. There's hardly any indoor seating, and the birds outside are an aggressive and dangerous menace.

Wow. OK. Again, how have I not reviewed this yet!?

This is my go-to place. For anything. If i feel like trying a new weird fruit, picking up amazing meats (Oyama), breads (Terra), having a coffee (JJB), grabbing some fresh fish (several) or just wandering and trying something new. It's also where I bring visitors, especially anyone interested in food. We pick up local delicacies, wine, go home and FEAST! What better introduction to Vancouver!! And my dad bought a wicked cap at the hat shop last time we were here and still happened to be wearing it...8 years later!!

It's also perfect place for a date...oysters, roasted garlic (ya that's right, if you can't take the heat get outta da kitchen), booze, fresh pastas...sigh. So good.

The produce in here does not get any fresher than this.

Granville Island Public Market is kind of like an indoor farmer's market.  There's a ton of little stores here selling all kinds of things like flowers, fruits, meats, coffee, clothes, ice cream, etc.

It's a nice place to walk around to do all your grocery shopping.  I like this place because it's airy and clean.

A lovely place to while away the morning, afternoon, or evening.  It's situated on Granville Island, nestled close to the boats and features tons of fresh produce and locally-made and locally-sourced foodstuffs.  One can also find handmade soaps, jewellery, and crafts while listening to the busker of the day; today was hurdy-gurdy day which was a nice change from the ubiquitous jingling bells on the radio and in the shops heard all day leading up to Christmas!

GI Public Market is like Pike Place in Seattle, yes.  However, I prefer GI's market to Pike Place because 1) I'm Canadian, so duh, my loyalties will lie with GI, 2) GI's market is cleaner (no weird sewer smells), and 3) people seem friendlier.  Products offered in both markets are similar and are at similar price-points (i.e., on the spendier side), but it's so fun to check out all the different stalls and sample lots of different food!  Definitely check out Chocolatas for yummy chocolates.

One tip: the market is very busy and when buying lunch or a snack, be prepared to eat standing up as the seating is quite limited.

The fact that this public market is on a small island one of its key selling points. To get there, you can take a scenic walk across one of the bridges (Granville, Burrard) or hop on the Aquabus ferry.

The indoor market is a combination of a farmer's market (fresh produce and flowers), international food court and specialty food vendors (several butchers, fresh seafood, bakers, coffee, tea, gourmet cheese, wine). I saw some samples but not many. They offer market tours led by chefs.

Food-wise you can find fresh pasta, bagels, Indian, pierogi, savory meat pies, chocolates, donuts, etc. The spread at Oyama Sausage (cured meats, pate, sliders) was particularly tempting. The market also features artisan crafts, e.g., jewelry, soap, toys, and so forth. There are places to sit inside and out to enjoy your treats.

And yes, there's even fro-yo at The Milkman.

    Open daily.

IM IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE! This is my favorite place on Earth. I think I came here every day. There is such a wide variety of EVERYTHING! You can buy every type of ingredient that you would need for a full meal. From fruits and vegetables to meats and cheeses. There is a place inside that makes soup and then freezes it so all you have to do is take it home and thaw it out. I think im too excited to write a review for this place...it's HEAVEN!

Another place which could be a great deal cheaper.

Most of the stalls are overpriced. And some of them are even more expensive than wholefoods - which does not make sense at all.

If you are looking to walk around and look at some good produce, meat, cheese, and seafood or are looking for some really high quality products and dont care too much about price hen this is the place to go.

5 stars because when I do go, I don't look at the prices.

This is essentially the Pike Place Market equivalent in Vancouver. However, I found Granville to be just okay. It lacks the X-factor that Pike Place holds, which would be local flavor. Nothing here that I saw along the lines of a Rachel the Pig, Pike Place Market Gum Wall or Pike Place Fish Market. Though I see that they have many performance venues and artisan shops that makes the gap between these markets respectably close.

Food vendors and eateries are primarily housed in one building and I found the selection to be not as large. Though there are some shops here that Pike Place does not have an equivalent for like Oyama Sausage Company with its selection of pate and Zara's Deli with its selection of fresh pastas and other Italian deli offerings. And places like Laurelle's with items like meat pies that are not the easiest to find in Seattle.

I think Pike Place Market is better overall, but there are a number of places here with some interesting finds that make it worth a visit.

P.S. Parking is a bit scarce here. But there are several places on Granville Island that you can park for free for three hours. You need to look for green signage. There are also pay lots here too with signs colored in blue with pay/payant on them to tell you this. Also, there are many pedestrians walking around without awareness of cars, so be on the lookout if you are a driver. And head's up if you are a pedestrian!

Looking for some sort of organic yogurt? Or maybe some fresh tomatillos? What about some fresh and local fruits and veggies? Oh, and maybe a bottle of wine to go. Everything and anything is pretty much located at the market! There's even a bagel place! (Score!)

I'm in LOVE with Duso's Italian Foods at the market! There are so many types of pastas, along with yummy cheeses your conventional supermarket lacks.

The place can get extremely crowded with tourists though. It's like walking through the hallways at school when people are trying to migrate from one class to another. (Not pleasant. And usually really stuffy and hot in the Summer months.)

Best of all, you can eat your Spanakopita or your slice of pizza right by the water after you leave the market! Just watch out for those Seagulls... Sometimes they are devils in disguise.

I love going to the Granville Island Public Market!

Fresh produce, quality meats, specialty products and seriously the best cheesecake you will ever eat (ever!). This place has a little something for everyone. Just walking around and window shopping (stand shopping?) is a delightful experience. It can be a bit on the pricey side at times, but alas, it's worth the experience.

What a great place! I've been here many times, but it's always a pleasure. It's pricey I gotta say, but everything is fresh and mostly local...delicious cheeses, artisan breads and pastries, fresh deli, fruits, veggies...nom nom nom nom...
You have to visit this place!
Woke up this morning (with a slight hangover, I gotta admit; don't judge me) and it's sunny outside (I thought I was still dreaming, since sun doesn't visit often anymore;/)...anyways, I decided to meet my friend for lunch at Edible at the Market on Granville Island (what a great place!)...afterwards we browsed through the market and spent our weekly budget on all the goodies over there...but it was so worth it, and I'll so do it again! Right now I am enjoying some brie with strawberry preserves, a glass of wine and crackers (all from BC), I know, awesome...

There's a ton of food choices in the cafeteria too just in case you need to refuel before shopping a little bit more.

A must-do for any tourist in Vancouver. I know I'll definitely be back here on my next trip to Van-City!

Fantastic! The afternoon started with an awesome mini boat cab ride out to the island docks. Great views of the bridges at sunset.

The vendors here are lovely especially the artists. Beautifully crafted Native Indian arts and crafts.

The food looks outstanding. My favorites were the specialty artisan pastas and raviolis, wow what outstanding flavorful options!

There are numerous restaurants by the water to dine at.

Only downfall, this place is NOT cheap.

I haven't been here in a long time, but I love a public market because of the variety of what you can find here.  There are a lot of everything, but I didn't find anything that really stood out.  The produce prices are fairly reasonable and comparable to other supermarkets in the area.

But I really love Granville Island for the artisans and the things they make here.  It's a melting pot of media, styles, and influences.

I think I should just live on Granville island. I mean, it's got everything a person could ever need -- fresh fruit and veggies, butchers and fish mongers, flower shops and bakeries, coffee and art supplies, books and clothes, a community centre, galleries and restaurants, even a school!

Ah, but I suppose they don't really allow that do they? Instead I'll just have to hop back on the aquabus and wait until my next visit...

Lucky for me, Granville island isn't only a weekend destination. No, the variety and quality offered here dictate that it be an almost daily one.

Ah the smell of fresh strawberrues and abundance of bright colors to appeal to the weary traveller.   Think Farmer's Market indoors. This was a short walk in the artsy district of Granville Isle with two preschoolers in tow.
Food court choices were limited and I ended up just getting a pb and j on a bagel!
There was a nice bakery that I found after the fact, but it was too late.

This Public Market is the best aspect of Granville Island and should not be missed by any self-respecting foodie.

Please, do yourself a favor and seek out a stall that sells Honey Crisp Apples* from New Zealand. This is the first time I have had one of these, and they are THE BEST Apples I have ever tasted. In texture and in taste it is very similar to a cross between an apple and a pear. Juicy yet crisp and light.

If you are keen on taking advantage of sampling local foods you should not miss one place that sells all types of smoked salmon jerky. I only wish I would have stuffed my suitcase with this stuff.

The food court is also not bad, and I thoroughly enjoyed my fish and chips from one of the vendors.

Lastly, don't neglect your sweet tooth.  While there are many avenues to satisfy you sweet desires, I will be forever attached to Terra Breads (see my earlier review of this place).

Lot's of beautiful fruits, foods, and other cool stuff here. Just bring your appetite and sample until your heart is content.

I can just say this place is incredibly overwhelming, with all the selections of fresh produce, fish/seafood, cheeses, and food stalls for bakeries, chocolatiers, florists, and many varieties of prepared hot and cold foods. Had I more time during my first visit last weekend, I would have ventured into trying the fresh produce; instead, I grabbed a sock-eye salmon roll (à la fresh spring roll in a rice wrapper-style with noodles and veggies) from the Fraser Valley Fruit Bar & Salads stall, as well as a little butter tart from the Stuart Bakery.

The only thing lacking is more inside seating for those wanting to have some eats on-site; on good-weather days, there's more to be had outside, and even at that, it was crowded. So yes, I definitely need to make another visit to Granville Island Public Market.

Vancouver - this is where our love affair began. When I first moved to this city, I lived right near here and I still get that warm, falling-in-love-with-you glow every time I go.
Granville Island is just wonderful, and at any time of year. The Public Market is just part of its loveliness - you can literally find anything you want here - you can do your grocery shopping, grab some amazing coffee, pastries and other delicious goodies, books, clothing...or you can even catch a play or check out the student gallery at Emily Carr.
My personal favourites, which I must MUST hit up every time I come are: Paper Ya - which I have already reviewed and which I will re-state makes my little nerd heart glow, the chocolate/fudge kiosk in the grocery area (they make the best things to nosh on while perusing the rest of the island), and the vintage hat store, the wares of which I always lust after but can rarely afford!
If you come to Vancouver as a visitor this place is a must - I honestly feel this place captures the soul of the city better than anywhere else. And hey...almost four years and we're still going strong ;) Love you Vancouver!

What an incredible public market! My boyfriend and I scouted out places we wanted to hit in Vancouver on our two day trip and I am SO HAPPY we made our way over here

Now, we both have IQ's of 40 and couldn't find how to get off the busy street and under the bridge to get to Granville Market for about 20 minutes. BE careful with the strange hilly streets under/by/through the bridge.

Once you get there, parking can be tricky, but we both lived in LA for 4 years so we knew how to be mavericks. You have to be aggressive and take anything you can find.

Once you get parked and walking through, this place is so incredible! The have plenty of overpriced restaurants/fun kid interactive activities outside of the indoor market. Street entertainers and crowds to follow. There is a lot of magic in the indoor public market as well.

Such fresh fruits, vegetables, pastries, breads, ethnically/nationally based foods. I felt like I was back in Europe when we walked through here. Coffee shops, dessert carts, florists. Richard and I didn't even have money to buy everything and we had a great time walking around.

It will be crowded though so hold your purse and makeout with your neighbor. I will absolutely come back next time I go to Vancouver.

There's always something to do here! but i agree with Charlie C! Parking can be a bitch on the weekends!! so go on the weekdays!

I love coming to the Public Market. The fresh smell of produce wafting in the air makes me want to buy everything! I particularly like going to "Armando's" for their cured meats and their homemade sausage! I always get their Chicken and Pork Longanisa! just the right amount of sweet and spicy, a little expensive but well worth it! They even got hard to find fruits such as Snake Fruit, (saayy whaaat?)  fine cheeses from around the world., freakin hot chillies from different countries,! and many different vendors selling authentic items!

Like i said! there is so much to see and do at Granville Island! watch live entertainment, see an improve show, eat gelato, you can easily spend the whole day here! you can also take the Aqua bus and explore Yaletown, or Science World. a definite "must do" i would say!

Granville Market reminds me of a smaller and less touristy version of Pike's Place. There is a ton of fresh produce, prepared foods and souvenirs. Located right under the Granville Bridge and along the water, it's the perfect setting for a nice outdoor lunch.

I'm surprised that the majority of comparisons between Granville's market and Pike Place in Seattle favor the latter.

Granville is technically smaller, but if you look at actual market stalls and ignore places selling typical American touristy trinket crap, Granville has more to offer. It's my favorite market on the West Coast and one of my favorites anywhere.

I have lived in Vancouver my whole life and my favourite place will always be Granville Island. The mix of art, shopping, theatre and food make it a world class destination in my books.

The market itself is full of delis, produce, butchers, a mini food court, coffee and tea, bakeries, hand made jewelry, crafts etc, in short it has anything you could really want in a public market.

My favourite places in the market for their freshness and quality are:

    - A la Mode (delicious homemade baked pies!)
    - Stuart's bakery (delicious and fresh baked everything)
    - Terra Breads (fresh breads with natural leavening always tasty and good for people with special dietary needs)
    - Edible BC (all BC made products. Great for gifts!!)
    - Kaisereck Deli (perhaps my favourite of all - fresh bread, veg and meat for sandwiches stacked high and great bratwursts! Plus inexpensive for a good meal)
Stock Market Soup (fresh made from scratch soups daily. get there early they sell out!)

I am sure there are others I am forgetting but these are my top places to go to when I am there.

Humongous indoor farmers market, complete with bakeries and a food court. So much to discover, a person could spend an entire day getting lost in each booth. My focus was on everything eats related. Prior to going I wish someone would have given me tips on what to hit, so I will say this:

look for the stand that has GIANT berries, and buy some of their blackberries. If you'e a landmark type person, they're right next to a coffee house that usually has a long line.

I also bought a gluten free coconut dessert from a bakery close to the fruit stand. Would have preferred to get the heads up about it not being that great, but it held me over for a bit because we had a ton of sites to see after we left.

Aside from the public market itself there are also tourist shops and street performers nearby in space outside the market area. Lots to see, lots to try. If  you're looking for tourist spots to hit, this one is on most lists, but will not disappoint.

Vancouver I will be back one day, and when I return: see ya again public market!

Very cool to walk around - lots of interesting food stands. Unfortunately they didn't have a fridge at my hotel so I couldn't buy anything to bring home.
I ate lunch at a pierogy place, can't remember the name. It's run by a few Asian ladies. I got a huge takeout container with about 20 different pierogies, 2 sausages, onions (not as caramelized as I would have liked though), sour cream and sauerkraut, and a massive beef cabbage roll (like 4"x3"x2") for $10. A great amount of food and it was all pretty tasty. I really liked the cabbage roll - it's a little strange, but the sauce it was in tasted a little bit like St-Hubert's chicken gravy, so I loved it.

Granville Island Public Market is really pretty cool, especially since part of the sign turns it in to the Pubic Market...makes you wonder what happens there at night. It is a bit like Pike Place in Seattle, but less jammed with people and a little more chill. There are lots of good shops and restaurants near the market and we found by getting there before 11:30 on a Sunday, we actually got some easy parking. Nice place to stroll and grab some fruit on a beautiful day.

I was excited to visit this public market because I heard it was better and nicer than Pike Place and the Ferry Building... but I thought it was just okay.  There is a lot of stands, food booths, fruit stands, plants, name it, it's here... but I still felt it was a little lacking.  My highlight of food there was a place that blends whatever fresh fruit you want into a froyo, I though it was really good!  There was also a fruit stand that had a bunch of fruits that I've only seen in Thailand and I thought that was interesting too!  There are some parking that is free for 3 hours and some that are marked that you have to pay so pay attention to the signs.  We actually paid for parking even though we were parked in a free spot :(

Enjoyed a sunny spring afternoon strolling around with my son ... This market bustled with activity & had a vast array of fruits and veggies, chocolates & candies, breads & coffees ... a true delight for the senses.  My critique comes due to the fact that the produce offered at the Granville Island Public Market is more expensive than the same quality produce offered in the little market next door to my hotel!  What gives?

The street-entertainers were decent ... however, I prefer the musicians over the sword throwers, (this one guy was just pathetic.)  I mean, come on people, just because you have a microphone, a sign asking for change & a couple of daggers, doesn't mean that you're qualified to perform ... feel me?

The surrounding scenery, (i.e., the harbor & the skyline,) are just gorgeous.  There's a park for kids & my son loved that, and also enjoyed chasing the geese & pigeons around.

Terra Bread was pretty yummy, (got a chocolate chip cookie for my son & some olive bread for me,) and also there is a delicious french bakery across from the market (has a blue awning) that has amazing croissants & apple danish.  I also got some salami & cheese from a deli in there ... wish I could remember the name - it was pricey, but yummy.  Parking was pretty easy & free on a Friday afternoon, but when we went back with my husband on a Saturday, it was packed, and bumper to bumper traffic - took a while to find a spot & that one we had to pay to park in.

All in all, a really nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Advantage of this Public Market is that it's on a TINY island surrounded by a beautiful waterway while you can walk the Bridge or take the Aquabus Ferry across.  The people with Sailboats near the Docks must love this place since they can pickup Fresh Food just steps away and head on their way out to Sea.

While I didn't bring my Sailboat with me(Don't have one *sad*), I still enjoyed browsing around the Public Market with various vendor shops of Chocolate, Butchers & Delis, Fresh Seafood, Diverse Foodcourt, Coffee & Tea, Sweets, Cheeses, Specialty Shops, Fresh Fruits & Vegetables, Bakeries & Pastries.

Really fun place to go especially if your into food, culture, and wine...

there's a ferry every 5 minutes or so from aquatic park which drops you right off the market or many public bus routes- we took the 50- which go to the market.

so lots of foodie things to buy and lots of shops to eat..what could be better..just take a little sample from each! cured meats, donuts, soup, pies, fruit, smoothies, fish, oysters....

lots of souveneir shops, the theatre, a kids area and a nice little park...

It's like an orgy for your eyes!  You can walk around in circles for several hours and be content not buying a single thing.  We came here FOUR times in a week to check out the food, shops, and live music.

It's a big tourist trap, but it's also a great place to grab an Earl Grey macaroon or a few slices of salami.  The best part has to be the people playing music while you sit back and chillax.

I would recommend coming here for lunch as long as you didn't eat dinner or breakfast because there's so much to sample you really should be eating on an empty stomach!

I love this place. I come here every time I get up to Vancouver. I could spend hours just looking, smelling, touching and eating everything! So go hungry and give yourself plenty of time to explore!

This is honestly a great place to spend time, especially when the weather is beautiful, which hopefully will be sometime soon :p.

I can't remember the name of the place, but last June I went and had a Pistachio and Chocolate cannoli which also had raspberries inside of it. Oh My God! Soooooooooo delicious! I had never had a cannoli before then but wow, instantly it became my favorite dessert of all time!

Only crappy thing is that the little kiosk that sells cannoli's only does so on weekends :(. But if you ever find yourself at Granville Island Market on the weekend, GET A CANNOLI!
