Granville Island has a great selection of fruits and vegetables at fair prices. With Three Fish Markets on site you likely to get some of the best fish available in the area on any given day. I like the fish market in the centre of the stalls but all three have worked for me over the years.

For more then 10 years I met Mike V of J Beethoven Corned Beef  when I shop at the market because we are both from New York City, we have something to chat about. For a few different reasons I have never once bought Corned Beef from him directly and Mike still always makes time to chat with me.

PS I have had J Beethoven Corned Beer and I recommend it.

this is probably the biggest draw on the island.  the atmosphere is similar to the ferry building in sf.  a mix of produce, seafood, food vendors, artisans, etc.  pricey.  seems oriented to tourists.

i thought it was ok.  i didnt see a lot that was particularly unique to vancouver.  seafood was local but almost all produce was from california's central valley.  in terms of grocery items, im not sure what this place has over a standard supermarket.  they're getting their food from the same sources.  i suppose i would go again for the market atmosphere and maybe have a meal on the waterfront.

The Public Market is home to a few gems. Here, you can get fresh fruit, fresh baked goods, fresh fish, fresh meat, fresh donuts... This is where you can come to get some really great fresh food. Most of it is local, but you'll also find some imported stuff too, making for great variety. There are tons of handmade clothing, accessories, and jewelry. There's something for everyone here! And it's definitely of the best quality.

The downsides? It gets so packed full of people that it can get a little overwhelming. It's tough to stop and look because everyone is trying to get through. One would hope that a "market" would be relatively inexpensive... but it's not. You'll probably find better quality everything here, compared to a Nesters/Save-On/Safeway... but unless you drive (which looks like a real headache when I see cars sitting in gridlock trying to get around), it just isn't convenient enough for me to take a boat every time I need to get groceries.

This is a great place to hang out on weekends though!

Many comparisons to Pike Place Market in Seattle....
I'd say I probably prefer the Seattle one. Both are good mind you.

There are more local vendors squeezed in here and this is an easy place to get lost for a few hours whilst in Vancouver.

I cycled round from Stanley Park which is a fair ride but it's a nice ride. Riding back not so much!

Now this is a cool place to spend your day as a tourist. There's so much to eat and the view of Downtown from the outside dock is stunning. Out of all the Public Markets that I've been to (which isn't very many), this is by far the best one.

We arrived here one morning as a pit stop before we made our way back to Seattle. I love how Granville Island is it's own little island and the public market is for tourists and locals alike. Parking was a little crazy but once you settled into a spot, the building with the public market will surely amaze you. I walked in and there's so much stuff in there. Plenty of food and souvenirs to keep you entertained for a few hours. The food court had so much variety from a wide range of cultures and I got to try perogis for the first time. Unfortunately, I wasn't really a fan of them. I wish I could've tried all the food and desserts they had here, but my stomach and our timing wouldn't allow it.

You must must MUST go outside onto the dock to see the view of Downtown. It's breathtakingly beautiful and Vancouver has unique buildings that make-up their Downtown unlike any other city I've ever seen.

So much fun, grab a little water taxi (AQUA BUS) and spend some time wandering around this public market while visiting Vancouver.  So what if it is super touristy, it's worth it.

Tons of different vendors selling fresh produce and breads and meats.  It goes on and on. Craft vendors and food stalls as well if you're hungry.  Even if you're not, you'll wind up eating something here.

    Check it out!

Most places you can't buy flowers, fresh fish, hand-crafted marionettes, herbal medicine (resisted putting quotes on that!), and mall-quality Chinese food all in one place, and if there's another nearby I doubt you get the same frottage opportunities as Granville Island Market in the summer. Plus the island is in some weird governmental grey area, which I like.
But if you're ever around here after dark, look through the windows, watch the floor for a minute, and prepare to never be comfortable again. It's like Ben up in that motherfucker.

I know, 2 stars - that's kind of stingy, right?

Well here's the problem. Just two days before I had my first experience at Pike's Place Market in Seattle.

    Enough said.

Ok, maybe not enough, but I was expecting the same joy of finding several local vendors with Vancouver/Canadian delights I could take home to my family and friends without spending a fortune. The variety paled in comparison to the Seattle market and everything was so expensive. I bought the standard maple syrup and got out of there. The surrounding stores around the main market are ok for window shopping, but this place is not really for tourists.

I'm a Seattleite, and we're trying to milk the function and appeal of our own well-known public market down here. Pike Place Market is quite the historical and social centerpiece for our downtown, and our tourist trade. So the comparisons are inescapable in my mind, and they were certainly invited by at least one merchant this morning when she found out where I live.

Assessing it purely as a market, Granville Island wins easily over Pike Place.
For historical and culinary appeal, Pike Place takes the overall vote, with so many good restaurants in such a quirky old setting.

First, I'll say that the street signage on the way in could have been more helpful to those of us navigating purely by use of paper maps. We zig-zagged and doubled back a little bit, but that's not the Market's fault. We could have planned ahead and mapped out a route for ourselves.

Once you get in, you have to hustle for parking and keep your eyes open, but it's probably not as bad (and certainly not as spendy) as Pike Place. Inside, this place is what a market should be. It's purpose-built, which has to help. The crowds move easily, and the cases and stalls easily display their wares to you without impeding the flow of foot traffic.

The vendors here are a nice mix of all the culinary delights--butchers, cheesemongers, bakers, producers, chocolatiers, and so on. Getting through all the bakeries alone could take a year, and ten pants sizes. I found great meats and chocolates, and the friends with me found amazing pastries, produce, and pasta. We barely touched the wine, and ignored the housewares and other specialty items. Just coming here for the groceries would be worth countless repeat visits. Every vendor we spoke to was cheerful and knowledgable, and everybody seemed to have something for sale that made me want to take a bunch home.

Fresh foods, fruits, fish, seafood, veggies, big choice of Italian pasta and ravioli, delicious baked goods, plenty of different breads, pastry, local chocolates, donuts, homemade crepes, organic coffee and so on. There is an area for warm food too. There are many shops and artist studios for buying gifts. Really there is for everybody something. Special organic pizzas freshly baked in a wood-fired oven made us weak. So we enjoyed the tasty vegetarian and the seafood one. We spent 3 hours in the market. We made a break and enjoyed organic coffee with different tasty local pastry. We couldn't eat other delicious foods because our stomachs didn't allow it:-( Granville Island is kind of peninsula and hence the market is located in a beautiful location including the False Creek area with an amazing view on Vancouver downtown. There are interesting street entertainers and musicians to watch. Sometimes the market is crowded because of tourists like us^^ but the local people who goes there too are very friendly. Some goods are pricey otherwise in general the prices are on average.

Wow. OK. Again, how have I not reviewed this yet!?

This is my go-to place. For anything. If i feel like trying a new weird fruit, picking up amazing meats (Oyama), breads (Terra), having a coffee (JJB), grabbing some fresh fish (several) or just wandering and trying something new. It's also where I bring visitors, especially anyone interested in food. We pick up local delicacies, wine, go home and FEAST! What better introduction to Vancouver!! And my dad bought a wicked cap at the hat shop last time we were here and still happened to be wearing it...8 years later!!

It's also perfect place for a date...oysters, roasted garlic (ya that's right, if you can't take the heat get outta da kitchen), booze, fresh pastas...sigh. So good.

Oh Granville Island Market, how do I love thee, let me count the ways. No seriously, I'm gonna count them:

    1) by food.  so many delicious, fresh options at their many restaurants, delis, butchers, fish stores, vegetable stands... the list goes on. If you want an unusual ingredient, Granville Island is a good place to go

    2) by art.  art galleries abound at Granville Island, from pottery to painting to jewellery, there's always something pretty to look at. And even if you can't afford anything (like me) it's still a lot of fun to peruse

    3) by theatre. Granville Island has several theatres, including the arts club, and so there's always bound to be a good play on.

    4) by location. Granville Island is beautiful- it's situated on the water, which makes it a romantic date spot, or a wonderful family outing.

How do I not love thee?
    1) by cost. Everything is more expensive at Granville Island (although you can score some deals on food items there, which are about the same cost as Safeway, but much, much better). You're guaranteed to find overpriced items there, so buyer's beware.

Overall, get thyself to Granville Island and enjoy a wander around a city landmark.

If you come from a city like Chicago where indoor public markets don't exist, you'll start to appreciate Granville Island Public Market a lot more. I mean, what not to like about it? Beautiful local produce, meat, seafood, flowers, and plants are available all year round. The market is also packed with food artisans, exotic and hard to find products, bakeries, and cheeses. Stay away from what I call the fast food aisle though. I think you'll know what I mean when you're there.

Yes, it's touristy and yes, it's might be pricier than your regular grocery store. BUT it's the kind of place you want to spend your weekend in. It's laidback, unpretentious, and not overly commercialized to a point where I would feel people are coming to get my money. One of my ideal weekend in Vancouver is to be at the public market browsing the stalls, and enjoying a scoop of gelato while getting some sun outside, next to False Creek. Most definitely check this place out if you're in town!

So...torrential rain and two unprepared travelers (read: broken umbrella, no rain jackets) derailed much of our Vancouver plans but still led us to Granville Island Public Market. Great place, though I'm sure in the summer or in nicer weather the crowds could drive folks away.

We found parking close by and walked around the various buildings, sipping our coffee drinks while "oohing" and "aahing" at a few distinct places. The prices seemed a bit more than what I'm used to at a public market, so buyer beware.

Lots of food options, though we were there so early coffee and fruit were all we needed (though we did stop to sample the salsa). The photography shop was great and stepping outside provides a great view of the waterway and downtown.

Gripe: Parking was a touch on the expensive side, and we found in paying over the 1 hour mark (but less than 2) you don't receive additional time -- just an hour (we had just enough Canadian coinage to cover what we thought would be 90 minutes). Grrr.

Good to know: some vendors take American as well as Canadian money; just ask!

The produce in here does not get any fresher than this.

Granville Island Public Market is kind of like an indoor farmer's market.  There's a ton of little stores here selling all kinds of things like flowers, fruits, meats, coffee, clothes, ice cream, etc.

It's a nice place to walk around to do all your grocery shopping.  I like this place because it's airy and clean.

This was recommended to us by the hotel staff, and we went there every day while in Vancouver. I miss it. I want to go back to Vancouver just for Granville Island.
The people are friendly (I'm from NE USA so everywhere else is friendlier by comparison -HA!) and the produce is fresh and reasonably priced. We got some absolutely delicious cheeses and meats, and one of the bakeries sells an almond croissant that I still dream about... I think it was Stuart's bakery.
I also really enjoyed the artisans who had stands - and the artists varied from one day to the next. Unique and distinctive jewelry, photography, accessories, etc. Evidently the vendors vary daily/weekly.
Just go there - it is a part of visiting Vancouver, a lovely and delightful city with equally lovely and delightful people.

A lovely place to while away the morning, afternoon, or evening.  It's situated on Granville Island, nestled close to the boats and features tons of fresh produce and locally-made and locally-sourced foodstuffs.  One can also find handmade soaps, jewellery, and crafts while listening to the busker of the day; today was hurdy-gurdy day which was a nice change from the ubiquitous jingling bells on the radio and in the shops heard all day leading up to Christmas!

GI Public Market is like Pike Place in Seattle, yes.  However, I prefer GI's market to Pike Place because 1) I'm Canadian, so duh, my loyalties will lie with GI, 2) GI's market is cleaner (no weird sewer smells), and 3) people seem friendlier.  Products offered in both markets are similar and are at similar price-points (i.e., on the spendier side), but it's so fun to check out all the different stalls and sample lots of different food!  Definitely check out Chocolatas for yummy chocolates.

One tip: the market is very busy and when buying lunch or a snack, be prepared to eat standing up as the seating is quite limited.

The fact that this public market is on a small island one of its key selling points. To get there, you can take a scenic walk across one of the bridges (Granville, Burrard) or hop on the Aquabus ferry.

The indoor market is a combination of a farmer's market (fresh produce and flowers), international food court and specialty food vendors (several butchers, fresh seafood, bakers, coffee, tea, gourmet cheese, wine). I saw some samples but not many. They offer market tours led by chefs.

Food-wise you can find fresh pasta, bagels, Indian, pierogi, savory meat pies, chocolates, donuts, etc. The spread at Oyama Sausage (cured meats, pate, sliders) was particularly tempting. The market also features artisan crafts, e.g., jewelry, soap, toys, and so forth. There are places to sit inside and out to enjoy your treats.

And yes, there's even fro-yo at The Milkman.

    Open daily.

Hello, my dear tourist trap. I'm an Emily Carr student trapped on a tourist trap island HELP. I have this love hate relationship with this foresaken market. Depending on where you eat there is delicious food.On occasion you can get a great deal

The cool things about the market:
    -organic food
    -musicians
-local crafts and artisans such as the awesome Cascadia Soap
    -local food
    -amazing food imports

The not so cool things about the market:
-the seagulls are the size of small dogs. (DEAR TOURISTS: DON'T NOT FEED THEM. THEY WILL ATTACK YOU). I've been attacked, and witnessed many other attacks on locals, and tourists alike. Trust me, the seagulls won't starve, in fact I have never seen birds so much in need for a diet.
-The prices. $10 for a sandwich? Or $8 for some of the worst chinese food on the planet? $4 for a slice of really greasy pizza? The worst pho I've ever had?
-Asian food made here is very very awful. The chinese food is greasy, and the sushi place is awful, pho is that even pho and not beef balls and noodles in plain water?
-Not enough seating, so you may be forced to sit outside, and battle the birds for your expensive food
-It closes super early. Around 6 or 7 each day.
-The crowds. Some days especially weekends, or events on the island as more of a local resident I'm battling with the crowds to get anywhere inside.

Cool Deals/Best Places in the Market:
-The stuffed bagels from the bagel shop. Cheap filling, and delicious Around $3
-The Curry Place. The curry is OKAY. If you come to the island all the time invest in buying a tiffin, then on certain days of the week you can get  cheap refills in your metal tiffin as long as you've cleaned it yay!
-The donut shop will often have giant bags of donuts for $2-$4.
-Nons, amazing slushies, and smoothies. Emily Carr students get a discount as long as it's not a daily  special. Daily specials are also sort of cheap being around $3
    - Build a sandwich. Get a piece of bread from Terra Breads, get a small piece of cheese just from one of the delis, get some cooked salmon trimmings from the sandwich shop. Ta-da one of the few meals for you can get at the market for under $5
-Veges, and fruits. Look for bags of apples and oranges for $3-4 an snack away, and have some delicious fruit to bring home.
-The Sandich place also offers a student discount, not sure if it's only for Emily Carr students though
-The food place across from Nons that is also a bakery you can get lasanga, and other pastas eated up for there or to go and salads. You can get a meal for $3-$8. Not bad for the market
-Look out for free samples of pasta from the deli, and from the perogie place!

    Not cheap but cool anyway:
-The Burger Place across form A la monde. Not cheap but it now serves poutine, and has some of the best burgers ever
    -Stuarts, hello confectionary heaven?
-The Candy Shop. They have oddities like soap candy
-The milkman. Icecream, aloe vera juice. Yum
-Granville island Tea. It's expensive sorta, but so delicious I can't really care
-Cascadia Soap which sometimes has a booth there. Amazing soap, and skin products for fairly reasonable prices.

I'm a sucker for places with lots of food.  Add a farmer's market and I can never say no.  This reminds me of the beautiful market in Barcelona, Spain.  There's so much to see and eat here, you can easily spend most of the day here.  The food is colorful and beautiful with lots of variety.  They have handmade pastas, soups, fruits, breads, coffee, tea...everything.....I with I had a place like this at home!

Cool place, but not quite as interesting as Ferry Plaza or Pike's Place in my opinion.  Sure there are a ton of vendors and the fresh fish, meats, vegetables, and fruits are beautiful but the prepared goods and kiosks felt a little bit underwhelming.  Worth a visit, definitely to see the cheesemongers and the organic produce.

This is essentially the Pike Place Market equivalent in Vancouver. However, I found Granville to be just okay. It lacks the X-factor that Pike Place holds, which would be local flavor. Nothing here that I saw along the lines of a Rachel the Pig, Pike Place Market Gum Wall or Pike Place Fish Market. Though I see that they have many performance venues and artisan shops that makes the gap between these markets respectably close.

Food vendors and eateries are primarily housed in one building and I found the selection to be not as large. Though there are some shops here that Pike Place does not have an equivalent for like Oyama Sausage Company with its selection of pate and Zara's Deli with its selection of fresh pastas and other Italian deli offerings. And places like Laurelle's with items like meat pies that are not the easiest to find in Seattle.

I think Pike Place Market is better overall, but there are a number of places here with some interesting finds that make it worth a visit.

P.S. Parking is a bit scarce here. But there are several places on Granville Island that you can park for free for three hours. You need to look for green signage. There are also pay lots here too with signs colored in blue with pay/payant on them to tell you this. Also, there are many pedestrians walking around without awareness of cars, so be on the lookout if you are a driver. And head's up if you are a pedestrian!

Another place which could be a great deal cheaper.

Most of the stalls are overpriced. And some of them are even more expensive than wholefoods - which does not make sense at all.

If you are looking to walk around and look at some good produce, meat, cheese, and seafood or are looking for some really high quality products and dont care too much about price hen this is the place to go.

5 stars because when I do go, I don't look at the prices.

Looking for some sort of organic yogurt? Or maybe some fresh tomatillos? What about some fresh and local fruits and veggies? Oh, and maybe a bottle of wine to go. Everything and anything is pretty much located at the market! There's even a bagel place! (Score!)

I'm in LOVE with Duso's Italian Foods at the market! There are so many types of pastas, along with yummy cheeses your conventional supermarket lacks.

The place can get extremely crowded with tourists though. It's like walking through the hallways at school when people are trying to migrate from one class to another. (Not pleasant. And usually really stuffy and hot in the Summer months.)

Best of all, you can eat your Spanakopita or your slice of pizza right by the water after you leave the market! Just watch out for those Seagulls... Sometimes they are devils in disguise.

I can't recommend the Granville Island Public Market as a good place to eat. For the past couple of years a large part of the indoor seating has been blocked off for "remodelling", but I've never seen any progress made on that project. As it stands currently, there are literally more food vendors than indoor tables.

Yesterday my fiancée and I went to Granville Island to stock up on spices and decided to eat some lunch while there. We both ordered food and walked the entire food court area looking for seating. After about fifteen minutes we gave up and decided to eat outside.

I took three or four steps outside before getting attacked by two or three enormous seagulls, some of the largest I've ever seen. One flew straight at my face, and the other landed on my arm knocking my plate over. These are some of the largest gulls I've ever seen in my life, and it's no wonder. Numerous vendors sell pouches of bird food with the explicit purpose of encouraging you to go outside and feed them.

I'm not usually one to complain in forums like this, but this was a very scary experience and I think it's important to warn others about it. Especially if you have small children, do not come here to eat. There's hardly any indoor seating, and the birds outside are an aggressive and dangerous menace.

What a great place! I've been here many times, but it's always a pleasure. It's pricey I gotta say, but everything is fresh and mostly local...delicious cheeses, artisan breads and pastries, fresh deli, fruits, veggies...nom nom nom nom...
You have to visit this place!
Woke up this morning (with a slight hangover, I gotta admit; don't judge me) and it's sunny outside (I thought I was still dreaming, since sun doesn't visit often anymore;/)...anyways, I decided to meet my friend for lunch at Edible at the Market on Granville Island (what a great place!)...afterwards we browsed through the market and spent our weekly budget on all the goodies over there...but it was so worth it, and I'll so do it again! Right now I am enjoying some brie with strawberry preserves, a glass of wine and crackers (all from BC), I know, awesome...

I love going to the Granville Island Public Market!

Fresh produce, quality meats, specialty products and seriously the best cheesecake you will ever eat (ever!). This place has a little something for everyone. Just walking around and window shopping (stand shopping?) is a delightful experience. It can be a bit on the pricey side at times, but alas, it's worth the experience.

Got the hankering for some fresh fruits? They've got it. Fresh veggies? Everything you could think of! Feeling like making your own grilled fish or steaks? Salmon, steaks, and meats galore! Souvenirs for friends? TONS.

There's a ton of food choices in the cafeteria too just in case you need to refuel before shopping a little bit more.

A must-do for any tourist in Vancouver. I know I'll definitely be back here on my next trip to Van-City!

I haven't been here in a long time, but I love a public market because of the variety of what you can find here.  There are a lot of everything, but I didn't find anything that really stood out.  The produce prices are fairly reasonable and comparable to other supermarkets in the area.

But I really love Granville Island for the artisans and the things they make here.  It's a melting pot of media, styles, and influences.

Ah the smell of fresh strawberrues and abundance of bright colors to appeal to the weary traveller.   Think Farmer's Market indoors. This was a short walk in the artsy district of Granville Isle with two preschoolers in tow.
Food court choices were limited and I ended up just getting a pb and j on a bagel!
There was a nice bakery that I found after the fact, but it was too late.
    Oh well....

I think I should just live on Granville island. I mean, it's got everything a person could ever need -- fresh fruit and veggies, butchers and fish mongers, flower shops and bakeries, coffee and art supplies, books and clothes, a community centre, galleries and restaurants, even a school!

Ah, but I suppose they don't really allow that do they? Instead I'll just have to hop back on the aquabus and wait until my next visit...

Lucky for me, Granville island isn't only a weekend destination. No, the variety and quality offered here dictate that it be an almost daily one.

Fantastic! The afternoon started with an awesome mini boat cab ride out to the island docks. Great views of the bridges at sunset.

The vendors here are lovely especially the artists. Beautifully crafted Native Indian arts and crafts.

The food looks outstanding. My favorites were the specialty artisan pastas and raviolis, wow what outstanding flavorful options!

There are numerous restaurants by the water to dine at.

Only downfall, this place is NOT cheap.

I can just say this place is incredibly overwhelming, with all the selections of fresh produce, fish/seafood, cheeses, and food stalls for bakeries, chocolatiers, florists, and many varieties of prepared hot and cold foods. Had I more time during my first visit last weekend, I would have ventured into trying the fresh produce; instead, I grabbed a sock-eye salmon roll (à la fresh spring roll in a rice wrapper-style with noodles and veggies) from the Fraser Valley Fruit Bar & Salads stall, as well as a little butter tart from the Stuart Bakery.

The only thing lacking is more inside seating for those wanting to have some eats on-site; on good-weather days, there's more to be had outside, and even at that, it was crowded. So yes, I definitely need to make another visit to Granville Island Public Market.

After searching practically all of Vancouver and Richmond, I finally found fresh mangosteens, soursop, passionfruit and longans here. You don't have to fly to Asia to find these fruits!

Granville Market reminds me of a smaller and less touristy version of Pike's Place. There is a ton of fresh produce, prepared foods and souvenirs. Located right under the Granville Bridge and along the water, it's the perfect setting for a nice outdoor lunch.
