I work right by the stage for Grand Performances, so to me for a long time it was just a nice fountain set up for me, that was until one day, I went out to lunch and found that there was classical music being played on a piano and violins on the stage over by the fountains and ponds.
It was a great moment. The Water Court and Wells Fargo center nearby has more then enough places to go grab food and drinks to enjoy while you watch your performance. Every spot has an excellent view of the stage, and even if you sit in the above areas like I had, you still can hear the music fairly well.
The stage/ fountain has a theme for each season, for Christmas it was an amazing Christmas tree, with a little train that went around it. Now for Valentines Day there are large masses of flowers placed together in the shape of hearts by the stage.
My bf and I sat there having a quick snack before heading out to the museum afew nights back, and even though we were just sitting there munching on afew quick snacks and a coffee, the backdrop and the scenery made the moment feel even more special between us.
There are about 3 parking garages by the nearby Grand Central Market that cost anywhere from $5-$8 depending on what time you decide to go. I definitely recommend coming here for a free show, no matter who is playing, you can't help but to appreciate life and the person you're with while sitting by this beautiful setup amongst the glow of the Downtown buildings. -

I love the Grand Performances @ the water court! I fell in love with Afro Pop because of the Africa Fete series they used to have back in the early days. I also discovered the wonder of Diavalo Dance Theater here. I look forward to summer eves in Down Town LA every year because of GP. If you haven't gone to one yet you are truly missing out on one of the best (and not to mention free to the public) cultural events in the city. Tip, you can bring your own picnic with you as well as wine.
Take advantage of this great resource for music, art, and dance. -

Free outdoor concerts in downtown LA! This is a great way to end your night with friends, family or a date.
They have some chairs set up as well as amphitheater seating. I sat at the amphitheater with my friends and it was awesome because we were right in front of the dance floor. I went yesterday night. Yemen Blues was amazing and played this middle eastern folk music. Very dance-able. Watchu Clan was also very good, not as dancable but I still danced. :)
You can bring all your own food and drinks and have a party! Fo free! They ask for donations to keep the performances alive and I was glad to donate for such great performances!Listed in: Entertainment on a dime

One of LA's hidden treasures--I can't believe I had never heard of this place until recently. Basically, GP puts on free concerts in a beautiful venue (California Plaza), and encourages people bring their picnic dinners and blankets and all hang out together under the downtown sky. How awesome is that?
I went to Charles Phoenix's Special Los Angeles-Land Slideshow and had a blast. There were surprise guests, a kick-ass mariachi band (that could pull a tear from a tough old timer's eye), and even snacks/cake for everyone. You can tell that the GP staff works really hard to put on amazing shows and keep them free and accessible to the public. The people I met at the show were really cool, friendly, and seemed to go to the shows a lot (there seemed to be tons of "regulars"). The staff was SUPER-duper nice/friendly/accommodating. You can tell they love doing their jobs, and that makes the experience all that much better.
Just a few tips/things I would do differently next time:
1. Go early and get a seat by the "waterfront" - definitely cool for evening shows. If you're not going early to get a seat, bring a blanket for the open auditorium seating.
2. Bring some money for parking or figure out a place nearby to park. From what I hear, it isn't cheap! (but then again, I don't know! I didn't have to pay).
3. Load up on the snack/food/drink. There's not a lot of restaurant opens in the immediate vicinity after Starry Kitchen and a few other places close.
3.5 If Starry Kitchen is open, by all means go there and get Tofu Balls. Even if you brought food. Totally worth it.
4. Try something new - I never would have gone if a friend hadn't invited me, but GP really celebrates the culture and history of LA that can be so easy to overlook at times. Some of the performers are somewhat obscure (and some aren't), but they make it easy to go a bit out of your comfort zone and check out something different.
5. Donate a lil something!--all the stuff (besides parking, I think...) is free, and their staff is really really dedicated and hard working, as are the performers who dedicate THEIR time and talent to putting on a great show. -

If you haven't been, go now!! like right now!
A couple of weeks ago my friend and I decided to venture out to watch a free outdoor concert by a great eclectic band called "Watcha Clan", which was playing with "Yemen Blues" that Saturday. I had been to another concert at MacArthur Park and thought they were a cool and interesting band. So we went. My friend didn't expect much from it and thought that it was going to be empty. But once we get there (the concert had already started), there was just a sea of people sitting down and enjoying the performance. The acoustics were amazing! and they even had a little dance floor to the side, which was also packed with wine-guzzling happy people :)
There is a famima who had conveniently placed their small wine bottle packs right at the entrance for all to see. I guess it was the thing to do, so we said, what the heck and joined in on the fun, lol. Pretty good wine.
It definitely has a bit of an upscale vibe and a more mature crowd, but everything was just beautiful, from the lighting, to the atmosphere, the music, and the downtown skyline right behind. it was a magical night!
oh and did I mention that it's FREE?!!!!
This free summer concert series has a summer-long calendar filled with different acts of local and international scale; a very eclectic line up.
Great times and this is definitely one of the top things to do on a summer night in downtown LA. For those that want to continue the party afterward, La Cita bar is right down hill on Hill! haha. The bad thing is that they charge to enter (not sure if all the time, but definitely on saturdays. Boo!)
In sum, grand performances is nothing short of magical! :) -

May I just say "WHOA! I LOVE IT!" What is this to my ears...did you say FREE?! This was my first time coming to the Grand Performances. The Grand Performances is located in the heart of Downtown LA, in the California Plaza. Where the busy LA people stay up to hear the sound of life.
I love the setup that they had. They had chairs surrounding the water where the stage is and an amphitheater by where a dance floor is. A few restaurants were open for business along with Famima and Starbucks for quick bite/coffee/desert!
I went to see the Yemen Blues band and also the Watcha Clan. I really enjoyed hearing the very unique Yemen Blues band which brilliantly evokes African blues and "the thousand and one vibrations of the Sahara, Nubian, Gnawi, Touaregs, Saidi and Bambara." I really felt the music flow through my soul to find peace and harmony in the world.
I love the Grand Performances! Keep it alive and strong and going LA! -

FREE concert, in a GORGEOUS setting (the water court in the heart of DTLA), with GREAT themes (aka, yesterday was the traveling kosher pickle factory, which was just plain awesome!!!)
Tips: bring your beers, or get some from Famima in the court, grab some snacks and food, and enjoy the lovely LA night. -

Seats available if you forgot your blanket!
Wine/beer allowed!
Great for a nice night out.
Bring a sweater/jacket, it gets nippy here for some reason. -

Perfect.
Surpassed my expectations.
Musical acts that day happened to be way above average, and I had a blast dancing with friends and experiencing different beats and cultures.
The setup is so idyllic, California Plaza is truly a beautiful venue.
Getting there is super easy, parking is cheap and plentiful. One bumpy ride on Angel's Flight later, and you're in the middle of the party.
Very well organized! I love that there is a starbucks and subway and famima so you can buy food if you haven't brought a picnic to share with friends.
I can't wait to attend another one of these extraordinary events! -

If you haven't been to the Grand Performances you are really missing an amazing venue. During the summer there are different performances ranging from dance to music to film and in all different styles.
One the best performances I went to was La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc which is a French silent subtitled film on Passion of Joan of Arc. Along with the film there was a small quartet giving it a bit of intensity to the film.
If you come early there are cushions in the main seating area but there is seating at the tables and chairs on the side too. Oh and don't forget to bring your picnic basket with some wine and cheese. Then look up at the sky scrapers and starts. FYI the financial district is a ghost town at night so it is really quiet and relaxing. -
Review from John G.

I went here to watch a performance of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson with my brother and a friend. It was my first time there and my first time seeing Miguel and his band. I can gladly say that I enjoyed both! The set-up of the venue is open-air, first-come-first-serve seating. There are tables and chairs setup around one part of the stage, some chairs and a bench area (auditorium style) situated closer to the stage that gets filled up reeeeal quick. Word of advice: Get. There. Early.
The stage itself is smack in the middle surround by a moat (sounds medieval yes but just look at the pictures posted by others, beeeeautiful!). Again open air so not only can you marvel at the stage and the performances, you can also soak in the surrounding L.A. architecture. Given the right artist or performance(s), the place can turn into the perfect date night spot. Great views, dancing, music. What more could you ask for! When I was there and from what I could see, you are allowed to bring a small picnic basket and enjoy a nice bottle of wine and some light food.
Despite the open-air vibe the music could clearly be heard and the way the seating is arranged, you can get a pretty good view of the performances from any angle (again I'm basing this off of my night there). Bring a jacket and/or blanket though because it can get a bit nippy at night.
During, before or after the performances there are several places to eat surrounding the place. They get a bit pricey but if you're really hungry or need a little night-cap they're there for perusal.
If you are going with a group I suggest carpooling as parking is either valet (expensive) or find-your-own paid parking.
I look forward to my next visit to Grand Performances as my first experience was quite enjoyable! -
Review from Novy D.
One of the best free open air entertainment venues in Los Angeles.
The venue is located right in the center of California Plaza next to the Omni downtown. We were lucky enough to snag great seats and bask in the beauty of the evening. Be sure to get there early to grab the seat of your choice; bleacher or side and back tables. Or bring a blanket and make yourself comfy right on the floor. Don't worry it isn't frowned upon.
The venue is very family friendly and easy going. Be sure to bring all of your picnic amenities and then some as it can be quite chilly in between the high rises. Everyone is there for the same thing, great music and a drama free atmosphere, which makes these events so inviting and friendly. Bring bottles upon bottles of wine and share with your neighbor. Bring a light dinner or order from any other the neighboring restaurants. Starry Kitchen is one of my favorites!
We can't wait for this summer's series of concerts!
Note: Show some love and support by donating GP what you can so we can keep this going. Look out for the orange buckets.Listed in: Outdoor Concerts

This is one of those events that makes you fall in love with LA and feel lucky that you live here.
I went for the first time last Saturday, with friends who spontaneously decided to see Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra and Build An Ark that night (experimental jazz/soul). We were lucky enough to go with a friend of a friend who is a donor to the organization and got us amazing front-row seats. Absolutely gorgeous venue, with fountains, water surrounding the stage, lights, and the DTLA skyline surrounding it all, on a warm summer night.
Very laid-back atmosphere. The VIP section consisted of lawn chairs, there was no set dress code, people can bring blankets, kids, etc. and people are also allowed to eat and drink whatever they'd like to bring. We bought a bottle of wine and some paper cups from Famima! and shared it among our group. My advice is to bring outside food and drinks, as the Famima! line is long (not much else besides Starbucks is open) and they also charged us $10 to uncork our cheap, less than $10 bottle of wine. Not cool.
The show was phenomenal. The staff and ushers were incredibly friendly. I can't believe that A) I haven't been before, and B) this is FREE. I plan to go back often this summer. Another tip, for another taste of downtown LA, the Angel's Flight is near the top of the stairs, and I found it by accident. Even though it only goes down the hill, take a full ride for the experience and for 50 cents, to get a little LA history. Plus, if you're a little tipsy, you and your friends can pretend it's a roller coaster. -

I've been to two of these concerts and had a great time both times. The concert stage is on water and the lighting is beautiful. The music was not really my style, but it was free, and the atmosphere was what made it awesome.
You can bring your own food and drinks, and the convience store next to it sells good sushi and drinks, and is open until 2AM. Plus, it's in DTLA so it is surrounded by restaurants and bars.
I've had such a good time each time I've gone, that I'd be willing to pay if this was ever not free. -

BF found out about grand performances after searching for free things to do in LA and surprised me by taking us here after dinner.
We saw a mariachi band, marionetts, and some comedian showing a slideshow of places in LA. We didn't really come prepared so we ended up leaving cuz our butts hurt from sitting on concrete and it got cold.
It looks like they have things going on every Friday and Saturday evening. We will definitely be brining wine and a blanket next time. -

Deserves all the five star ratings. Bring your own liquor. And if not, there is a small convenience store, conveniently storing liquor for you to buy and drink, which I did.
The events are excellent. It's world music, meaning it is from outside of the United States (somehow American music is not considered world music), The surroundings are skyscrapers, nice, dancing people picnicing and drinking wine, a great sound system, great performances.
Very good. -

This venue is a true LA gathering place. Every single summer I await the release of their calendar and start planning my weekends accordingly. They have presented such great bands as Novalima, Nortec Collective, Kinky, Buika, Dengue Fever, Ozomatli, Caravan Palace. I adore this place.
Great performances and FREE! Well you obviously have to pay for parking because well it's LA and that's how we do.
You can picnic, bring alcohol, dance, take pictures, record. Just the perfect gathering place to enjoy amazing music.
Arrive early to get seating, either in their amphitheatre-like stairs or plastic chairs so you can eat and enjoy the scenery. Once the music starts head down to the circular island and dance the night away.
Let's see what 2011 brings and see you there fellow Angelenos. -

I went on Friday July 16, 2010 with my boyfriend. It was his first time going and probably my 5th or more time. I go here every summer for at least one concert and always bring out of town visitors to this place. The location is great, you get some fresh air, and the acts are always wonderful, even if you have never heard of them!
Did I mention it's completely free?!?! Go as often as you like - all you have to do is pay for parking and food. I've never done this, but I'm sure you're welcome to have your own picnic. Just make sure to get there very early as sits fill up fast and certain areas have a better view. -

After having an incredibly rough day I decided to make my day even rougher......I got on the 101 and headed towards downtown L.A!!!!!
Now I am a VERY satisfied valley girl. I only go over the hill for church and auditions. And I especially steer clear of Downtown L.A. I was a bit biased to this area of town due a SKID ROW outreach that I attended during the M.L.K day of service. Those were the most terrifying 2 hours of my life. After that experience I vowed to NEVAH EVAH set foot in Downtown L.A again.
I constantly bypassed yelp reviews for any establishment in that part of town and even cooled off on some friendships with people who lived in DTLA. YES yall,l it was that serious!!! I was traumatized. I admit it...I was a Valley snob.
And then one simple Yelp event changed my life forever!! My fellow Yelper Kristine A. posted an event @ Grand performances. It was a free screening of IL Postino starring the ridiculously talented Plácido Domingo!!! OMG!!! WHAAATTTT!! FREE, Opera, AND Plácido Domingo, I couldn't pass this event up. Yes I am an "Around the Way Girl" who loves herself some opera! :)
But wait...It's in Downtown L.A.....after pondering for the next few days, I decided to put my bias aside and head down to "Lil Baghdad" a.k.a Downtown L.A. I hopped in my car giving myself about an hour to make it there. I made sure that my windows were rolled up tight and that I was locked in my car safely. And I'm off, right off the bat traffic is terrible, and it takes me more than an hour to get there!! UGH! I sit in traffic grumbling in my car "Plácido Domingo betta kill it tonight, because this trip is absolutely irking me!"
I finally find parking, a block away from the Grand Location. I park and as I get my card to pay the attendant says "Oh I'm sorry Ma'am, cash only!" What!! After a pathetic pout the attendant looks at me and says "It's okay, go ahead and park." Now I have lived in L.A for almost 5 years...this has never happened to me, NEVAH! And I didn't even have on my flyest "Freakum Girl" dress. This may be a good night after all!
So I park, clutch my purse and take off running in my silver sequins Dorothy slippers. This is Downtown L.A....I don't wanta get raped, robbed, and cut up into lil pieces. I finally make it to Grand Performances, and it's packed!! All are out to witness this event. The stage/set up was just breath taking, and romantic....kind of wished I had Reggie Bush on my arm this night! I actually said "WOW" aloud...like I was at Disneyland or sumtin...but I was not expecting what was before me.
I parked my ebony bum on the cement bench, and fell in love with Plácido Domingo. IL Postino was amazing!! Grand Performances set up a glorious event, that was divinely classy and sooo well organized. I couldn't stop applauding them. When the donation bucket came around I gave every dollar and cent that I had in my pocket...while wiping away tears. I had a beautiful night, met some amazing people, and cried tears of joy and appreciation for wonderfully executed art.
As I STROLLED to my car I came upon Rosa's Bella Cucina truck (I heart this truck..it makes my tummy glad!)!! No zeppoles though..next time for sure! And get this...I even strolled the streets of Downtown L.A...ALONE!! I saw the sights of a place that I looked down upon earlier and now walked away an enamored fan of this beautifully restored part of town.
I will be back!!! No I mean it...I'm hitting up the standard tomorrow!! :) Told yall I was a new fan of Downtown L.A. I had a blast! Thank you Kristin A., Yelp, and Grand Performances for blessing me with this wonderful opportunity to turn my frown upside down, erase my bias and get to know the rest of L.A. I encourage you all to join Grand Performances mailing list, befriend them on facebook, and even follow them on twitter to find out about their FREE events. So worth the drive (If your coming from afar) and traffic to experience whatever they put on! (Get there early..they're popular! Bring a portable seat just in case you run late, seats go quickly at this event. Or bring a cushion for the cement bleachers. Bring CASH for parking, and bring food too, they encourage it.!) Thanx Grand Performances. You made my night!!! -

Los Angeles, CA
Ever since I started working in Downtown Los Angeles a few years ago, I made it a point to venture out and discover different parts of the city. I was happy to find Grand Performances so close to the office on a hot summer Friday when all I was doing was looking for lunch. I wound up lounging for a couple of hours and went way beyond the time I allotted myself. I returned often when I found out they routinely set up concerts throughout their summer seasons.
The day concerts are a different vibe than the evening concerts. Most people are too busy getting lunch or just passing time until their lunch hour is over. Often, and sadly, the performers are neglected and under-appreciated.
The evening concerts are when the Water Court comes alive. The people are there for the music. People come out for the free concert and camp out for the best seats they can. (Most of the vantage points give you a good angle, btw) You can spread yourself out in the upper sections and fight for a seat, or you can swindle your way into a VIP section on the floor. You can also shake your booty in the little atrium down below. The sound has never been an issue for me. GP seems to crank it up, so if you're just walking around you can still enjoy the music.
The music is so varied. So many interesting artists and different types of music genres are featured and highlighted throughout their seasons. You wouldn't be disappointed just to show up even if you did not know who was playing a given night or day.
Considering its a free concert, you would expect hordes of idiots and douchebags since they allow alcohol on the premises during the performances (WTF). I'm still surprised that I haven't encountered or seen any idiot behaviour in the 4 years I've come. A much better attitude than I've seen compared to other places (e.g. Hollywood Bowl). Bring your picnic basket of food, and some wine. If not, check out one of the vendors that might be open late for the concert.
GP access is easy. You can park below in the California Plaza parking lot for a few $, or come up Hill Street via the Angels Flight. If you come during the day, you can take a quick shot down the DASH A route.
Grand Performances is a gem of Los Angeles. Open to all ages, types and cultures. It makes for a great evening with family and friends... for FREE. FREE.
FREE.
If you see the red bucket passed around, don't be an asshole. Show some love and drop in some $. Keep GP going. They also have drop boxes throughout the venue. Skip your latte and support a great event. -

I first stumbled onto Grand Performances in the 1990s, walking randomly to the downtown library. Then, one evening, I hear Hugh Masakela playing in the middle of what was a fountain during the work week. Soon afterwards, me and my group (daKAH Hip Hop Orchestra) were playing there.
I find myself at GP shows often, and am stoked that one can now procure a slice during concerts. There have been many different types of stuff that has graced the stage. Stuff from all over the world. One of the cooler results of the diverse programming is the equally diverse audiences that attend. What an incredible case for cultural diplomacy, and the powerful potential that the arts have to connect people to one another.
I know it's summer when I'm chillin at a Grand Performances show. -

I have some dating advice for the men out there: As a music and arts centric person... but one also on a budget.. I can assure you that a concert is the way to my heart. Add beautiful scenery like water fountains and neon lights, backdrops of downtown LA skyscrapers, PLUS the ability to bring to your own food/alcohol/picnic baskets/blankets, and BAM! I promise you'll get laid. Not to mention, you barely had to spend any money, save parking and some goodies to munch on during the show.
Grand Performances is one the many establishments/activities that I am proud of as an LA resident and wish I had known about sooner. Although Yelper Dee D. has invited me several times, this is NOT how I imagined it.. it's BETTER! A beautiful, amphitheater style setting plus glam, an artsy crowd, and eccentric acts or wold music at a free price tag. I am hooked. I can't believe something like this is FREE! This isn't your regular small town free show in a park.. this is a full-on production!
The crowd was universal and laid-back with everyone dancing and enjoying alcohol and a night-time picnic. No drama here! The sound quality was terrific and the lighting was better than most national-touring bands on major labels. Plus, the employees who run this production OBVIOUSLY care about the their jobs and the public as I met with the director afterwards to suggest a Hungarian band and he immediately told me to email him and was very interested versus not having enough time for measly old me.
So if you are out of a job or simply have a low budget but want some top-quality entertainment... head to Grand Performances.Listed in: Recession Proof Activities

Take the metro (as not to deal with traffic) and head to the California Plaza Water Court, as during the summer Grand Performances holds FREE concert series, noontime and evenings.
Beautiful location within downtown LA. Near MOCA if you're into art and make a day out of it. Dress warm during the evenings.
Check out the performers through the website calendar. Bring people you know (family, friends, a date, a meetup group) and make it a social gathering. Hopefully you don't sit by people who chatter through the concert though... hate that. -

I was here for Dakah. The show was amazing but this review is for the venue.
5 stars.
Mini amphitheater to the far right, two sets of rows up above - center stage, more to the far left, downstairs chairs and plenty of room for everyone. This venue only made me imagine how many concerts I've been to that should have been here.
A pool of water surrounding the stage. Thoughts of being a floating device watching the show clouds my mind.
There was no security hassling anyone. It was truly one of the best events I've been to this summer..... as of now.
Ok, back to Dakah.... Hip hop Orchestra? Say what? A 70 piece band? Damn right. I seen a few familiar faces on stage. No, Im not talking about Macy Gray who came out rocking a tough dress and hair as beautiful as it always is. I was talking about sir Jedi on the decks. props to him. UPDATE!!!!!!!! STILL a HUGE FAN... Now I'm talking about Movies That Matter series at the Grand Performances...
Here was the description:
GRAND Performances, Movies that Matter film series
August, 15 2008 "The World According to Sesame Street"
350 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, California 90071
Cost : FREE
This film explores the drama and complexities behind producing international versions of the world's most-watched children's television program. The documentary shows that social impact and change can come from the most unlikely sources, including a team of Muppets.
Now, those of you who REALLY know me, or want to know me, or have read my profile where it says: "Don't Tell Anyone Else But... I like Grover", know that I have a Sesame Street Fetish of sorts. I mean, I am not "turned on" by Sesame Street, but there is something about the characters that elicits a joy from all of my pours that is so primal it can only be related back to the smiles and warm fuzzies this show gave to me as a child. I moved all over Canada and the US when I was a kid and was awestruck by the show's metamorphosis to mirror the culture of where we were -AWESOME & AMAZING!
That said, this past Friday night, I had a date. When we were planning this, he asked me where I'd like to go. When I initially took the risk and told him I'd love to see him but I'd want to go to this Sesame Street movie, he laughed and thought I was joking. At first I was going to let him off the hook, have him take me to a nice restaurant, out dancing, whatever. Then, I thought... "HELL!!! I'm not getting any younger and if this dude is at all really serious about getting to know me (instead of just getting in my pants), he's going to have to deal with the fact that being on Sesame Street or involved in the organization is on my bucket list."
Like it or not, I called him back and laid it on the line. I want to go to this performance. And, guess what? He gave the right answer: "Michelle, anywhere I go, with you, I know I'm going to have a good time!" A gem, or WHAT??? So, we made our plans to attend.
Despite the socially-conscious spin of the film, when Friday night rolled around, even I was feeling the pressure of dragging some poor guy along to fulfill my Sesame Street joys (not to mention a little guilty that my friend Skylar's going away party was this night and I was going to have to miss it).
But, off we went into downtown LA.
Best part, the guy I was on a date with was Bangladeshi. We get to the performance center, the moon was full, the weather was perfect, the outdoor setting - WONDERFUL, and we discovered that the movie was based on working in 3 countries during political upheaval to produce Sesame Street - Kosovo, S. Africa, and BANGLADESH. When we saw that on the screen, I looked at him, he looked at me, and we were AMAZED. The movie was perfect, inspired conversation about culture, relevance, world events, children, education, social issues, and TOTALLY opened him up to share more with me about his culture and life acclimation to America. I mean, Sesame Street is the bomb!!!!! (No pun intended as we saw segments around issues of civil unrest in Kosovo too.)
The audience cheered, I squealed with joy, we clapped for the successes of these 3 stories on the documentary. It was phenomenal and made me love Sesame Street even more (also earned major bonus points for my date's faith in me).
Needless to say, after THIS start to our evening, the dinner, drinks, and dancing were also just "perfecto".
I love grand performances in the summer time. They do a wonderful job, and this movie made me sooooo happy!
(p.s. Thank you to John M for his review of R-bar and reference to Sesame Street, which reminded me to review this movie and event series).Listed in: Joints to Frequent (Near work…

Another fun and free summer event!!!
Bring your own wine!!!!
Caravan palace was amazing! ! Its gypsy jazz sort of like Cirque Berzerk if your familiar. Fun crazy electrifying beats that had young and old dancing! The crazy French got a little out of control, maybe still celebrating Bastille day, but they got the crowd in a frenzy and people were dancing in the fountain. Fun! Fun! Fun! Did I mention, BYOB!
The set up is great. Plenty of parking for $7.50. Right in California Plaza near MOCA and Omni hotel. Easy breezey. Since there was a crowd two entrance helped lighten the load. Even leaving wasn't bad.
The half dome open air set up had great views even if you show up late, the stage has water in front and fountains shooting up behind the stage. It was gorgeous I felt like I was in NYC. Too cool and too metropolitan to be LA, right?
The crowd was having so much fun. Everyone was friendly and polite. If you don't bring your own picnic, there are restaurants open. We grabbed a pizza slice to continue my NYC stay-cation. Lively, fun, friendly and free. What more can you want.
The have a variety of concerts Friday at 12 & 8 and Saturday at 7 ish. Check online they say being live things can vary.Listed in: Low budget Stay-cation for…

*** ever heard of an "haegum" before? ***
it's a two-stringed instrument w/ a rod like
neck attached to a hollow wooden box ...
it sorta resembles a prototype to violin but
as Korean-born Kang Eun-II says "it's not
free". well she has unbelieveable freestyle.
from traditional Korean folk tunes to an MJ
tribute, Haegumplus performed really well.
to see 8-9 musicians play melodically sad
folk tunes then break into "Billie Jean" then
"Ben" then "Beat It" was joyful to witness. ;)
my kid even stopped playing Nintendo DS
to say "i like that, are they gonna play more"?

How can you not give 5 stars to this spot?
The venue is enclosed within a circle of towering downtown la skyscrapers. The sound quality is not sacrificed from being an outdoor spot. In fact, the tall buildings surrounding the venue provides great sound treatment.
I saw one of my favorite musicians "Ojos de Brujo" from Spain here. I thought I would never see them in the states, but Grand Performances made it happen!
There's room for dancing, sitting, and to even have a picnic with a few friends while enjoying a great show.
I'm not aware of free parking, but $5-$10 for parking split amongst carpool buddies for a free show is well worth it.
I always look forward to the summer in Los Angeles thanks to Grand Performances! *High-five* -

The free summer concert series has been going on for many years, during lunch time for the office workers and on the weekends, including night time performances. Live music from asian, latin, mexican, and modern to hip hop, KCRW, orchestra, dance theater, etc. There is also an occasional film screening and festival. Saw an awesome show here last summer, Kinky and Sidestepper.
Very cool spot, among the high rises and located in the pristine area of Bunker Hill. Very diverse crowd, depending on the time and type of performance. People of all types gather to listen and watch these really awesome shows, made available with corporate sponsorship to promote the best of global culture. Wine and beer available about $5. People hang out around the Watercourt stage - on the steps, in their windows, on the floor, or on the benches. Parking is available in and around the area.
6-10-07 Update
Ozomatli @ Cal Plaza - Summer block party kick off event with three bands starting 3pm Sunday afternoon. On Grand Avenue, instead of the watercourt stage due to size of crowd. A couple of booths for info, and band stuff like t-shirts and cds. Huge crowd, other then 20 feet back from the stage, the best spots seem to be standing on the seats in the bus stop structure and in the walk way, behind the railing of the closest office building.
I didn't see the wine stand that is usually around, but I could have missed it. I made it in time for the headliner, the last band to play Ozomatli. Over 10 members, with 1 chick, mostly latin hip hop. T-shirts, shades, jeans, caps, bandanna, etc. The girl member only sang one song, I would have liked to see more of that. The band and the crowd tossed it back and forth. Lively, band members dancey all over the stage, at one time 3 horn instruments, lots of drums. Weekend parking at Cal Plaza $7.50. The best parking, $5 on street behind California Plaza, go east on 6th street, north onto Hope Street. It's on the right side, with an open lot. Take the escalator or stairs all the up to get to Bunker Hill. It's a ways up and sometimes the escalator doesn't work.

Epic.
Amazing.
Shabooya! Shabooya! Shabooya Roll Call!
This should be in the "Not For Tourists- Los Angeles" book if it isn't already.
This is why I moved downtown. I can spend almost every weekend during the summer going to the Plaza's summer series. It's like the Hollywood bowl, except much more intimate. And free!
A documentary on the international implications of Sesame Street one night. Horn-laden afrobeat another night. Traditional music from (insert name of random country other than the United States) another night.
And of course, this is the stomping ground of the legendary, grammy award- winning, LA-groomed Ozomatli. This past summer, members and musicians from Ozomatli and the Beastie Boys formed an experimental Banda/Mariachi band that played some great banda music in addition to covering some classic 80s covers and gave out free chorizo for your abuela to cook you for breakfast.
Tips: Bring your own food, wine/beer/liquor of choice, and be prepared to have a great time. Leave the drama at home because this eclectic, diverse crowd isn't about that.
Oh yeah, did I mention it's free!? But try to donate something, or tell some rich friends to donate a huge amount of dough, because this is definitely something that shouldn't end.Listed in: My Neighborhood

What more could you ask for?
1. An Awesome summer night in DT LA
2. BYOB - legally!
3. BYOChair (and having your own space)
4. Great music from daKAH Hip Hop Orchestra
This was my first Grand Performances venture at California Plaza. I am damn glad I checked it out. California Plaza is the perfect backdrop for an awesome free concert in the middle of downtown LA.
We all go through the battles and heartache of traffic jams and pollution but this type of event makes living in LA all worth it. Grand Performances did an awesome job. This is a perfect way to spend some time with friends, have a few drinks (and not pay $9 for beer), listen to awesome music (FREE!) and surround yourself with the coolest Angelinos. -

If you've never been to California Plaza and experienced Grand Performances, then you just don't KNOW--- so you better ask somebody! Or just read this review...
Simply the best free summer concert series LA has to offer. This venue is beautiful and so calming. There are plenty of places to chill; lots of tables with umbrellas and tons of chairs. Bring your blanket, a great bottle of wine and you're set. The stage is surrounded by water and little "islands" filled with beautiful flowers. Shimmering waterfalls and sprouting geysers highlight the back of the stage area. It's even more lovely at night. And if you're willing to step out of the tiny rock/hip-hop/R&B box, you'll find that this place has a lot to offer. Performers come from all over the world and bring with them a wide variety of musical genres--- Flamenco fused with trip-hop, bhangra beats enfolded into samba, euro/afro-pop cumbia... need I say more?
You can grab a quick bite to eat at one of the many restaurants in the area. Or put together a great picnic with friends. You can't go wrong. Be sure to get there at least an hour early to score the best seats.
One last tip: If you just feel like sitting down, cool. But if you feel it in you to get up and dance, then go for it. DANCE!!! This is the spot to do it. -

Free concerts!!! This ain't the cheap park productions in your local suburban neighborhoods. No offense to the cheap park production but the acts here are top quality. The venue at California Plaza is amazing & the atmosphere is perfect. You're surrounded by friendly people having a good time & who are here for a good time.
This past Friday we got Cucu Diamantes and she was amazing. I felt obligated to make a donation in the red donation bucket cause we were having such a good time.
Whether you are on a budget or not check it out. It's a great thing to have in downtown LA. there are ton of eateries around and if you're super lucky the Kogi truck and Coolhaus ice cream truck will be around.
If you don't have a great time, it's you buddy not the venue. :) Cheers -

I didn't get a chance to go this season, but when I did it was totally fun. You're in downtown LA with a whole bunch of other people: teenagers, families with little kids, couples, young professionals...a very diverse group of people who have decided to spend an evening enjoying wonderful works of various artists from ethnic dance groups to musical performances. The Watercourt is the stage for the performances, a fountain whose size can be adjusted in order to provide a stage. Each season there are at least two international performances. It's truly a cool experience bringing together the community of Los Angeles, and it's free!
The performances start in June and run until October.Listed in: Free Summer Concerts...Super…

A well-designed urban public place in downtown LA?? Can't believe I hadn't been to the California Plazauntil this summer. Came here the first time to check out daKAH (LOVED THEM--my sister bought their album after!) and the second time to support Natusol during the shindig they had for Mayor Villaraigosa. $5 parking @ 5th and Olive in the lot.
In terms of surroundings, there are many places to sit and chill...the place is landscaped very nicely with water surrounding most of the area by the stage. There's even a fountain that shoots up water incrementally. Like a baby Bellagio fountain =).
Acoustics here are really nice throughout the California Plaza. Good enough to hear the singers even with their bands. I would love to come again and check out some of the other performances. People even brought blankets and beer!! Thanks to everyone who helps make this event possible. We need more events like this in LA! -
