Review from Justin L.
Grand Honour Restaurant is an institution on this block. Foodwise, it's the only reason not to tear the whole building down (besides Ebei Sushi next door, if you're still up for the all-you-can-eat schtick à la late-1990s). The bubble tea shop gets more watered down as the weeks roll on, and that poor placeholder corner restaurant stuck in the basement... nobody seems to stay for very long. But Grand Honour maintains some faithful clientele and is actually good.
Yes, it's known for its shark fin and abalone. This is where people come to eat these prized delicacies on smaller occasions (i.e. not at a wedding banquet). It's pricey though, so it's not like people come here to eat these everyday. Therefore, the rest of the menu is worth exploring, too.
My last visit was with family for a very casual dinner, actually. Fairly pedestrian. Nothing endangered, as you can see:
GREEN BEANS: nicely blistered and tender, with minced pork and shiitake sprinkled throughout.
FISH CLAY POT: large chunks of white fish that's first flash fried, then slowly simmered in the thick sauce with garlic and seitan.
EGGPLANT HOT POT: exceptional, with browned pieces of tender tofu that were simply delightful to eat.
BLACK VINEGAR PORK SPARE RIBS: yes, some pieces had more fat than meat, but these are spare ribs after all, not tenderloin. Fantastic texture and flavor. We finished the whole plate.
Service was courteous, attentive and honest. I remember the bill coming out to about $73 before tax and tip. But there was PLENTY of food for 6 adults--we ate too much--and we had leftovers of everything (except the spare ribs).
If you don't like paying for parking, just park down the street for free. -

Dishes are passable and pretty middle of the road - definitely targetted at an older Chinese clientele. We were warned some of our dishes would be spicy... it didn't come remotely even close. Service is better than your average Chinese restaurant.
This joint is supposedly famous for their abalone, squab and shark fin soup - which is odd considering it's too small to host a wedding reception. Meh. The shark fin soup was decent - nothing amazing. Squab was well seasoned - but not the juiciest I've ever had. All the dishes were pretty well-prepared - but nothing amazing.
Pay parking in the lot nearby - no parking redemption. -

One of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Food is delicious and service is not perfect but still very impressive. Usually there is a line up for dinner even if you made a reservation (they try their best since it is quite a small place). As far as I can remember, this place is one of the only places in Vancouver you can be sure that your shark fin and abalone is real.
I have noticed that sometimes finding parking is difficult since the parking lot is usually full by dinner time. But there is free parking along Granville Street (to the left/ south of the restaurant).Listed in: Best Chinese Restaurants in…

Like I mentioned, my mom likes to come here for dinner. That's why we're back again.
Food still pretty good and service was ok, we made the rsvn to avoid wait time.
The dinner menu didn't change much expect price increased.
We ordered a new dish that didn't publish on menu that recommended by waiter. Crab meat pan fried tofu w/spinach on top and seasonal veggie on side. Wow, that's so impressive and delicious.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Katie F.
Came here with friends who are regulars here since they love the shark's fin soup and abalone here. I wasn't that impressed. The service was very good and almost excellent for a Chinese restaurant :)
The dinner menu is extensive. We shared a number of dishes: beef, sweet and sour pork, salt and pepper squid, veggies, a tofu and fish dish, rice and a couple of others.
The coating on the salt and pepper squid is too dense and heavy and most of the meat dishes had too much fat on them (poorly trimmed cuts). The taste and flavor was good, but the fat and gristle in the meat was definitely a turnoff. -

one of the better quality chinese food i tested. they renovated so it's nice inside. fried squid and fried rice with dried scallop is excellent. it's actually not greasy and not too salty. restaurant was full, i wouldn't come here without rsvp.
waiters watching closely because the tables were in need, before we even completely left the table, tables were clear.
parking 5 bucks for 2 hours. attempt to redeem parking fee - fail.
