Review from Grace C.

Since I'm off work on Wednesdays during the summer, I try to make all my friends take the day off (cough, cough) so they can come eat and play outside with me. A few Wednesdays ago, I headed out for a dim sum lunch in my hood with one of my besties! We checked out Grand Dynasty, where I had been for dinners, but never for lunch.
We started off the meal with a fried goodie - this one isn't much to look at, but wait until you hear what's inside! There's taro paste, duck and enoki mushroom. This was my favourite by FAR! One thing about dim sum is that it allows you to sample without having to make a meal out of something. But boy, I could have 6 of these and call it a day!
We also tried their Baked BBQ Pork Bun. I know, on the outside, it's a little boring looking, but don't let that fool you! The bun is a steamed Chinese bun with a crumbly topping. And inside, there is a load of BBQ pork. If you don't like the traditional steamed BBQ Pork Bun they have at Kirin because it seems too plain, or the overly sweet baked BBQ bun at other places, this is the one you must try! It's so good you will wonder why they haven't made something like this before - a perfect hybrid.
Next up was their Deep Fried Bean Bead Curd with crab meat - loaded with crab and deep fried, this was good for you and bad for you at the same time.
One other item we ordered was the Chicken Wrapped with Fish Maw and Bamboo Pith. I've had this dish before in variations, usually with the chicken and fish maw totally wrapped in bamboo and hidden from sight. But this was a delightful surprise! Not only did they use black silkie chicken, the fish maw was the actual wrapping. Delightful to look at, but one out of the three pieces here was really dry. Not sure if that is how silkie chicken is supposed to be? Anyone out there know?
And to round of the meal, we also got the Fried Steamed Bun. Essentially it's a XLB you'd find at Chen's but with a denser skin and they fry the bottom after it's been steamed. So beware, yes, there is still soup loaded inside. Eat with caution.
As this restaurant is close to my home, I will be back. They have a lot of interesting things on the menu so it's best to go in a large group so you can sample the variety. -

I hear that Dim Sum is not too shabby here.
I'll have to come back again for that, but it's not very often I come to this side of Burnaby. I would have to make a special trip.
We had a very large group of people for a special occasion.
The dishes we had ranged from dungeoness crab to a deboned duck, scrambled eggs and brown rice that wasn't really brown rice.
(Please note this review is based on my personal experience here and how I would have compared it to other restaurants and similar dishes.)
Crab, I enjoyed, deep fried with an egg coating on top. Meat wasn't dry, gave it about 3.5 stars. Needed finger bowls, but I was prepared to get messy with it.
Eggplant was yummy, a bit sweet. 3.5 stars (uh oh, sugar, I could taste the sugar)
There were other dishes, that shared alot of the same ingredients, so it was a bit hard to define which dish was what. There was a common hint of sweetness in the dishes that I took note of.
Boneless duck was about the same as others, but again, they topped it with vegetables that were similar to the other dishes, so it didn't highlight the duck as much. It was surrounded by a nice bed of green vegetables, but the topping on top covered the duck. Flavour wise, a good 4, but overall a 3.5
The rice was not worth mentioning unless you like yuck, but there was a few others who loved it.
My brothers, the Japanese food critique and another didn't like the rice. 1 star.
Loved the soup! 4 stars, I had a piece of crabshell, but that seems to be unnavoidable at times which is unfortunate.
There was the scrambled egss with crab, bean sprouts and I think fish maw. My favourite dish there which I jokingly referred to as sweet bread. I liked that dish very much (a bit of crab shell, but that seems to be unnavoidable at times, which tells you they use real crab).....POW! 4.5 stars, no really? yeah. :)
Why?
Because it wasn't sweetened and it was the most natural tasting dish there.
No starch, no sugars that I could tell were present in the dish and it wasn't heavy.
It was also unique enough for me to take notice and say to self. "Hey, now this isn't something I come accross very often at banquets, nice!"
So during the meal and after, I kept wondering about that subtle presence of sweetness each of the dishes and wondered why they need to use sugars?
I practically passed out at the wheel trying to drive home from all that sugar and starch even though I tried to minimalize my carb intake. Thankfully the rice wasn't tasty to me or I would have been in a food coma.
If I wasn't so sensitive to the sugars and starches, I probably would have enjoyed my meal a bit more, but you know what? This place is really not bad at all.
It was a great chance for me to try out their dinner style food and see what the comparisons were like to others.
The service is good, the staffing are well prepared and considerate, the place is clean and the food is good. It's not a 5 star, but I think they're trying. Which tells me, I've got to try their Dim sum. I think that's where they're money is really at.
Do a little dim sum dance and then go gamble your life away at the casino. That'd make for a great day!
And you know what? 3.5 stars is really saying that they're keeping it real and it's solid. That's a good thing.
So, who wants Dim Sum? -

Very solid dim sum place. Came here on a Sunday. Luckily we reserved a table early as it was jammed and still people waiting for tables after 1:15pm.
This restaurant is attached to the Casino, but you can only access the restaurant through outside. Outdoor parking is plentiful right next to the restaurant.
The ambience is great, high ceiling, gigantic chandeliers. The flatware and cutleries are very elegant as well.
Food quality and quantity are definitely above average. I always judge a dim sum place by their shrimp dumpings. The skin is made perfectly here, not too sticky and not too think. But I find their turnip cake is not up to par, very starchy.
Prices are on the high side, very close to places like Kirin. Perhaps the lack of competition around the area justifies for the premium pricing. Recommended. -

I found it shocking that on a Friday night, Grand Dynasty was virtually empty - and this was during the usual peak dinner hours (6-6:30pm).
You would think that being situated next to a casino at the start of a weekend, there'd be more people, right? Wrong. My extended family and I occupied just one of the four tables (that had dining patrons) in a virtually empty restaurant.
The food here was okay at best. Here's why:
- Peking duck was pretty standard as well as their lettuce wraps.
- Soup was flavourless unless you added red vinegar.
- Deep fried oysters were flavourless (and surprising came with no sauces).
- Crab was too salty though cooked perfectly. The "Chinese donuts" that accompanied the crab were fried beyond edible.
Service was decent. Our plates were changed regularly and the servers seemed polite from what I gathered.
However, reverting back to why it was empty on a Friday night.. I suppose I've answered my question. The taste and quality of food trumps service in most cases. -

This restaurant has very nice plates! It has a nice decor and a good place to bring out of town guests.
I've been here for both their dinner and dim sum and the quality has been very good. Food comes out piping hot and the portions are not too small. Although the prices do lean to the more expensive side, it's not by much as compared to other restaurants of similar calibre.
Overall, a very nice place to have an authentic Chinese meal. -

Grand Dynasty is a fairly brand new Chinese restaurant, they opened last week so I'll cut them some slack.
First off, this restaurant is located in the same building as the Grand Villa casino. You will find the entrance outside next to the outdoor parking lot.
Decor looks nice but the restaurant itself is small. Therefore, my first tip is reserve a table if you don't want to wait.
Second tip, be prepared to pay a lot. The dishes are small and the prices range from 3.50 for a small to 6.75 for the chef specials. With that being said, the average price per dim sum dish is around 4.50.
The portions here are small and disappointing. The lack of options were disappointing as well as there were about 38 dishes including dessert.
I have never seen steamed beef balls that small. In terms of taste, it was ok but I've had better for sure.
I would suggest to wait and try this restaurant as it's probably going through some growing pains at the moment. It's definitely wasn't worth the money and unless their portions get bigger, they may have some trouble after the fascination of a new restaurant dies down.
Ps it's cash only. -

Chinese food. Hmm... for this one it is hard to write more than that. There did seem to be a challenge communicating some of our desires to the wait staff. If the food experience made up for this gap I would rate the experience higher but alas it did not.
Not being from the area I do not have anything to compare it to but if you speak the language this might be a good one to dig deeper into.
