I was out and about in the south-west of Ottawa. I had time to kill before picking my wife up from her book club. Now, Ottawa - in case you have never been here - has more pubs than Dublin. Okay, maybe I am stretching the truth a bit there. But, I am not far off. There are a hell of a lot of pubs in this town. I am becoming quite choosey when it comes to deciding who gets my business. When I stumbled across Grace O'Malley's, I couldn't help but notice that the parking lot was JAMMED with cars. And, inside was quite crowded too. What was particularly interesting was that it was a MONDAY evening, and not a weekend. The food is typical pub fare (burgers, fish & chips, chilli, quesadillas). They also serve a wide variety of beers on tap (Keiths, Stella, Hoegarden). There is a huge patio (for when the weather gets better), they also have pool tables and video games - but please, don't go to a pub to play video games!

My friends and I were searching for a quality pub in the east end that we could relax, people watch and have a pint. As a wild and crazy college student, I used to go to the west end location, but it just got old. Gracie's East is a much more relaxed/mature environment...well, still a party on a Saturday night, but not full of drunk college kids, haha. Seriously, the west end location is set up like a meat market.

We arrived around 7 and were able to be seated in a booth. The 80's hair band that was playing that night was setting up around people finishing dinner. The server was a nice girl who looked really young...actually, they all did, but nonetheless, was very polite. You could tell she was new, but still did pretty well with our orders before the place filled up, but we did have to wait a bit when it got busy...Saturday night, understandable. The decor is more interesting that the west location...exposed "rocks and trees" with wooden and warm tones....kind of like if you were in a bar at the bottom of a tree house..haha strange, I know.  My boyfriend and I ordered drinks as did our friend. We stayed about 3 hours with drinks/shots and a finger food platter thrown in. The menu is regular pub fare, but they do have a deal where you can pick 3, 4, or 5 finger foods for a reduced combined price. We got chicken fingers/onion rings/zucchini for $15. I almost thought I was watching Hot Tub Time Machine since most of the people were dressed like they were stuck in the 80's... Pretty entertaining, and the band?? AWESOME! The female lead singer rocked it, and it was a nice change from celtic music they tend to lean to, but I've never been disappointed by the live music at Gracies.

Cant wait to check out the patio in the summer...it looks nice!

This week it was Grace's for breakfast. As we are not regular Pub folk, this was our first visit to Grace O'Malley's and we weren't sure what to expect. As you might expect with an Irish Pub, the interior is rather dark with the typical relaxed Pub atmosphere. The wait staff were initially a bit reserved but pleasant and eventually warmed up once we got into some conversation. Our choice from the breakfast menu was the classic two egg breakfast. At first glance the price seemed a little high but not outrageous. As it turned out, the breakfast we got was huge and everything was done perfectly. Well worth the little extra cost. I should probably note here that, for those with a smaller appetite, they do offer a one egg breakfast with portions cut in half. All in all, an exceptionally good breakfast experience. Unfortunately, Grace O'Malley's only does breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 AM to 3 PM, but it's a great way to start your weekend.
