Review from Sue A.
I've been a 2x+/wk regular at the Park Lane Goodlife for the past two years.
Located in the lower level of the Park Lane shopping mall, the layout of the club is kind of strange with the exercise studio, change rooms and most strength training equipment being located on the ground floor. The cardio equipment and group cycling and yoga studios are accessible by scaling quite a flight of stairs. The cardio equipment has the cardio theatre where you can plug in a pair of earphones and watch one of the many tvs.
For the most part, the club and the change rooms are very clean although the odd time the change room smells a bit strange. I never shower there so it's not a concern to me.
The main thing I do there are group fitness classes with the odd bit of weight training. The group exercise schedule has a wide variety of Les Mills classes. I love the Les Mills BodyPump classes which are a lot of fun and mostly taught by excellent and motivating instructors. The exercise studio isn't the greatest space, but it gets the job done. The class I like the most is group cycling on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Taught by a true cycling enthusiast, these drills will whip you into shape in no time.
Lately the gym has added a TRX rack. Apparently classes will be happening soon on this medieval looking piece of equipment. I look forward to seeing fifteen people exercising on this contraption.
The crowd during the week is mostly university students and personal training clients. It's never very busy and you get on the equipment you want without having to wait. The club is co-ed, but anyone would feel comfortable here.
The guy works the desk in the morning during the week is fantastic. And best of all, goodlife validates parking. $1 for an hour or $2 for 2 hours. The savings off regular rates is almost motivation enough alone to get me there.Listed in: 30 Day Yelp Challenge

Also not a fan of this particular location..
As soon as the doors open by the reception area, all the meatheads lifting in front of the mirror pause (in unison) to twist their necks in anticipation of seeing a female walk by. This place reminds me of the nude beach scene in that movie 'Eurotrip' when all the guys yell "A girl? GIRL!!!!!" and chase after her.
I wish some of the patrons would just be normal and try NOT looking to hook-up at the gym of all places. Other than that the facilities are clean, conveniently located and I love the instructors in the body combat classes. -

Not a fan.
And it's not entirely fair. There are lots of things to love (good location, great classes, wonderful class schedule) but the cons are also strong.
The biggest issue, let's talk about the people. I'm not talking about the staff; they're almost always great. I'm referring instead to the other patrons. I often get the feeling this is a "Look at me! Look at me!" gym. Which is not what I'm looking for in a gym. The body types here aren't as broad as some other locations; you're dealing with mostly fit 20/30somethings who are going to maintain their good bodies. And, hey, good for them. But there's definitely a lot of flash as well. Too many guys making too much grunting noise when lifting their weights. Too many women wearing crazy-expensive workout wear in yoga classes.
The equipment is usually in good repair and most people seem to know how to use it most of the time. The layout is a bone of contention. In theory, I like the idea. In reality, I always find it awkward and difficult to navigate.
So, while it may not be for me, it definitely deserves 3 stars at least.Listed in: April 2012 - The Underdogs

Ugh. Good Life (formerly Nubody's), I just can't make up my mind about you.
On the one hand, you're extremely convenient - close to my work and home, and open at all the times of the day I would ever want to visit you. You're fairly clean, and your equipment is plentiful and mostly modern, so these are good things.
On the other hand, the showers in the women's washroom sometimes give off a not-so-faint smell of sulfur, the outlets for hair-dyers are often non-functional, and your front desk attendants are sometimes friendly and sometimes fully ignore me when I'm coming and going. The good and the bad more or less balance each other out, so while I'm not planning on taking my patronage elsewhere at this time, you're not exactly knocking it out of the park for me. -

When I'm looking to work up a sweat, this is my gym of choice. Conveniently located on Spring Garden, this facility is bright, spacious and features a wide variety of weight and cardio equipment. Peak hours at this location can be a little crazy, but for the most part it is tolerable (unlike other local Nubody's I've visited).
This particular facility is co-ed, which may deter some ladies from joining, but Nubody's tries to be extra accomodating by providing women with a smaller, internalized 'mini-gym', complete with all the equipment available in co-ed quarters. Personally, I prefer the co-ed sections because of their spacious size (and so that I can gawk at toned, athletic men pumping iron: among them my fiancé, who often tags along for his own workout sessions).
Some will argue that Nubody's prices are inflated when compared with other gyms, but really, you get so much out of membership here that the price is absolutely justified. Besides the plentiful equipment (meaning no lengthy waits for weights- pardon the pun!), there are a number of classes which you can attend on membership (I'm partial to spinning and aerobics)- and these are great not simply for the physical well-being they promote, but also because they encourage social engagement between classmates. It's an all-around enhancement.
Bottom line: If you're interested in a fitness club that gives you all the bang for your buck- Nubody's/Goodlife at Spring Garden is the place to "make you sweat" -

Nubody's Fitness is a very popular gym. And its understandable why. They have great trainers, a large selection of equipment and tons of classes. The gym itself is very clean and tidy. The only downside is they cater to both new and experienced fitness fans. The reason why this is a bit of a downside is because I don't think I have been to the gym once, where I didn't hear weights slamming on each other or watch someone tear apart a piece of equipment because they didn't know how to use it.
I think I will recommend that anyone who joins Nubody's, or any gym for that matter, be given a mandatory tour and instructions on how to use the equipment so as not to injure themselves or anyone around them. And the staff should be told to stop people when they see them using equipment improperly.
With that out of the way, lets get back to the good stuff. The gym is very large, especially for being in the middle of downtown Halifax. It is also tucked inside Park Lane Mall which is great! Because you can work out for two hours before getting a large popcorn with butter at the movie theatre which is right across from the gym.
My favorite part of Nubody's is the variety and amount of cardio equipment. The best piece of equipment in my mind is the rowing machine. And they have two so I never have to wait.
Nubody's is a really good gym. They have the highest prices in the city but only by a few dollars. You get what you pay for in my mind and now that gym memberships are tax deductible in Canada, the cost is a lot easier to swallow. -

Another coed fitness centre, this location is one of Nubody's busiest clubs with something like 3,000 members.
The Club is found on the bottom floor of Parklane Mall and attracts many of the mall-workers. The Club tends to be especially busy between 6:30 - 8:30 am, during the lunch-hour, and then again from 4:30 - 5:30 pm. While the classes are included with your membership, they tend to fill up very quickly (especially the spin classes) so you'll want to be sure and arrive early so that you can sign-up and ensure yourself a spot.
