Review from Angelo T.
After a day of heckling white-haired old people at the library, we dragged our obnoxious butts into Chinatown. I really had no idea what Sarah Louise was rambling on about and expected to make polite comments about her fav place.
Wow I guess I didn't have to lie. With so few "hole in the wall" gems in the city that each of us hold secret (mine's Wa's and Kaffir Lime :D) you gotta appreciate the experience of discovering these places for the first time.
The owners were indeed adorable. The old man kindly showed us the menu and pointed at the pictures on the wall and did his best to explain what was in them, while his wife kept shoving chinese treats to us like we were children who stopped by to see their great aunt.
The food prices are great, $20 definitely covers two people for lunch. I had their curry noodle soup and sniped at whatever Sarah Louise ordered. And wow the tofu chunks were the most tastiest almost-meat bits I've ever tasted, which I dare say is better than the pork served on ramen in most Japanese restaurants in the city.
So yeah five stars. Gawd, I'm such a conformist. Anything Sarah Louise is into I'm follow suit because she's the hippest person I know. -

Wow, I am amazed by Good Fortune's progress within the last month and a half. Today my little brother and I decided we would give take out at this place another chance, and I am very glad we did.
First of all, the host (and I'm assuming owner) of this establishment is absolutely ADORABLE. Soooo friendly and sociable. He greeted and recognized us right away, and even though we told him we would be taking our food to go, he sat us down with a pot of loose leaf white tea while we browsed the menu. He was extremely helpful, and tried explaining to us "the best deals" even though we knew what we wanted.
We ended up ordering the dumplings, bbq "pork" fried rice, and the dry "ribs," "shrimp," and "chicken." He told us it would be 15 minutes.
When we went off for a second, and came back within 15 minutes, low and behold, our food was waiting for us, on time!
To feed two of us with leftovers was just over $20, which is a great deal for Calgary. These prices are extremely reasonable. He sent us home with take out menus and I will definitely be back. I think that if things keep going well, Good Fortune might actually live up to its predecessor White Oak II, which Veggie Fusion Express (the other restaurant that was in the space just before Good Fortune) definitely did not.
Stoked, and hope business picks up and keeps up for these wonderful people. But if any of you soulless meat eaters come to this restaurant, and then leave poor reviews because it didn't "taste real," like I've seen at other vegetarian Chinese food places, I will give you an ear full. Just sayin'.
I will continue to support Good Fortune Vegetarian House. :)Listed in: vegan friendly in calgary, a november of yelp
