Like Melissa F., I was born and raised out of this great little Hong Kong Style Cafe in Chinatown.  The mornings are hectic with the elderly Asian couples who tell some great stories about their past and some great stories about the medication they are on.  The evenings are really quiet but at 7PM, you can get free parking right out front of the restaurant until 8PM.

My favorite dish is the shredded chicken (or beef) on spaghetti.  After living in Boston for the past two years, I think I came here daily for lunch every vacation I had back in Vancouver.  This dish has the power to turn best friends to enemies when trying to share.  It is that good.  They have daily lunch and dinner specials for a very competitive price.  Their HK style coffee, hot or cold, is a great way to finish up the meal.

Whenever people ask me for the best spaghetti in town, I recommend Goldstone.  Automatically people cringe at the idea of spaghetti + Chinatown + HK Style Cafe...but they always come back with rave reviews.

Best pineapple bun in Vancouver (i go to Lido Baker in Rmd, even better!); the nice sweetness and crispy soft texture, a bit crumbly.  It's definitely most fresh in the morning, as they open early 7am.

their Baked pork chop over chow rice is also recommended.  Good size but not enough for leftovers.  Still cheap here, esp. their breakfast.

Cash only. easy parking: ground impark lot beside it, or the big parkade across the street.

Great joint to go for cheap, fast food on Canucks nite....oops, too late for that now lol

Still the same, serving cheap HK style food, Old Skool.  The waitresses are quite pretty here. No really they are. Just ask my sister Cherise.
This review is about a couple of months old. sorry for the lateness of it all.
What did I get? Curry and rice.

Reading Joyce's review brought memories of the days when Chinatown was like a home to me.

Don't forget, you don't have to eat here.  You can do take out too!

Honestly I can't even tell you if the food is 4 stars but to me it's comfort food at it's best.

I remember coming here as early as 1989 as a little girl with my family (pre-divorce lol). I'm pretty sure the place looked the same, and the food tastes the same.   Back then I didn't think it was weird that breakfast was served with a wiener instead of a sausage and that it came with the option a bowl of vermicelli with pickled veggies and pork.   East meets west.

Then after eating breakfast/brunch/lunch there, we would buy some buns to bring home and then keep shopping for groceries in Chinatown.

Every now and then, when I'm in Chinatown, I'll come visit Goldstone and have a combo with a milk tea.  I always get what I expect and it always tastes like my childhood to me.

I cannot remember when the first HK style cafe popped into Vancouver.  Then they started popping up all over and they spread like cancer, but in a good way.

I've been to quite a few.  This one is one of the "dirtier" ones in terms of cleanliness.  Other HK style cafes that I've been to are much cleaner.

The food is ok, and I have no complaints.  Whaddaya expect?  This is still just Honger eats and you can't turn it into a fine dining experience, especially when a granny is somewhere in the restaurant squawking out a dialect that I cannot comprehend.

One thing to mention is the custard tarts.  They have this je ne sais quois about them.  I tend to think that they are the best in town.

It looks like it's been around for ages, and that's because it has. Goldstone is a relic from old Chinatown, and their worn signage, ratty booths, tables with glass tops that have yellowed over the years, and mostly ancient clientele, give it a rich character you'll be hard pressed to find in newer HK Cafe's.

Most of the items on their extensive menu are very tasty. If you're a first timer, go with any one of the baked rice or pasta dishes or curry beef brisket and you're almost guaranteed a home run.

It's also great for lunch, the plates are well portioned and great value as most of them can easily feed two people. They're not open very late for dinner (8pm), so either head down early to eat with the old folks or take it to go.

So don't judge a book by it's cover, or in this case a restaurant by it's shabby decor. Goldstone is a treasure. It sparkles on the inside, figuratively speaking.

I can't help but love this place. My grandma used to take me here when I was a teeny tiny toddler (I think I was styling the bowl hair cut at that time *ponders*).

Our favourite mid-afternoon snack was HK-style milk tea, HK-style ying yang tea (half coffee, half tea), pineapple bun injected with a tablet of butter and black pepper steak chow mein served on a sizzling plate :)

Food: It's tad pricier than one would think for an oldschool HK cafe (10-12/dish) but just for the sake of nostalgia, it's worth it. The menu offers a variety of chow mein, fried rice, Honger sandwiches, baked goods and Honger drinks.

Atmosphere & Ambiance: This place hasn't changed since I was a kid and in many ways, I'm glad. The service is speedy and they treat you with genuine HK-style service here - definitely an experience. It may be big enough to be a ball room, and even though its looks are far away from there, it is Chinatown must eat.

I visited Gold Stone for the first time in a few years and it didn't disappoint.  The food was just as good as I remember.

We ordered baked pork chop on rice, beef brisket curry, pan fried noodle with beef and soup.  Every thing was tasty and inexpensive.  The food was classic Hong Kong style.

Ok, my Chinese-Canadian friend is born and raised in Vancouver so my group trusted him on his restaurant selections.

He said this place is really affordable but very good. So okay, we went ahead. He suggested this beef with curry. Chinese cuisine with curry? Are you kidding me? He was not kidding! But darn... it was so awesome. Soooo good! He also ordered us "hongkong style coffee". We asked what's a "hongkong style coffee"? It's actually just regular coffee with creamer and sugar... don't ask me ha! But no complaints, it's good.

If you are a tourist, you might not notice this restaurant. But everything here is very authentic (I'm not sure about the curry...)  - it feels like you are in Hong Kong, which is a good way.

We also ordered custard and coconut bun. Good stuff.

Sometimes you go to a restaurant over and over, not because the food is especially great, but just consistently good enough and it's convenient based on where you live.  Then over time you begin to build a certain loyalty to it. That's how I feel about Goldstone.

It is one of the oldest HK-style cafes.  Like other HK style cafes it has a very extensive and diverse menu: baked pork chop on rice, baked spaghetti, spam sandwich etc.  My recent favorite is the Western Fried Rice, which is a ketchup base with wieners and other mixed veggies. The curry brisket is always good, makes me sweat on the back of my neck.

A few observations about this place:

    1) Time Warp - I don't believe this place has been renovated since it first opened. As part of the historic decor, it has the biggest clock (appears to be 4, maybe 5 feet wide) I've ever seen indoors.

    2) Clientele - It is mostly a seniors hangout. There's also a table at the corner reserved for the police. Since the police is often around, you can rest assured gangsters won't like this place, perhaps a bonus if you like to avoid that crowd.

    3) Uniforms - Like the interiors, the staff's uniforms perhaps also haven't been updated since the place opened.  The green and red uniforms remind me of xmas elves costumes, they're very cute.

I really wouldn't want them to change a thing, I hope Goldstone stays around forever.

I have been a customer of Goldstone for over 25 years.  I have seen the owner's CHILDREN grow up in this place- haha.

This is by FAR the BEST casual diner chinese food in the Greater Vancouver Area.

    Menu MUST haves:
Baked Pork Chop on fried rice
Chicken Spaghetti in red sauce (they have a good one in white too)
    Crispy Chow Mein.

If you go during 11-3 they have delicious lunch specials.

In a neighbourhood that was vibrant, then slowly died, and is now gentrifying, this place has remained a constant and the reason it has is because the FOOD is just so delicious.
Have never been disappointed with this place.  I will continue to frequent this place as long as nobody drives them out

    Long Live goldstone!

Baked pork chop over spaghetti!! Yummy!! I love HK Cafes and usually seek one out when I'm in Los Angeles. Thank goodness for all the Yelpers because I thought this restaurant was pretty dang good. Granted, when I walked in at 6pm (they close at 8pm), it was empty with only about 2 tables occupied, that was okay because the food was outstanding. The portions are enormous. My husband and I each ordered a dish, when I think we should have just ordered one and shared. And yes, we can eat a lot!! =D I would highly recommend coming here if you have that craving. And one more thing, this is a CASH ONLY establishment.

Needed greasy food to cure a night of major inebriation..... and thought of BBQ pork. McDonald's was not enough!

I had heard good things about the buns so I decided to try theirs. As I sat on the bench and took my first bite... the bun did not seem fresh. The bread was cold and tough and dry... not happy. I was happy to finally get to the pork on the 3rd bite.

I waited until I got home to nuke it.. I was so hoping it had just come out of the oven.... it just sucks when I have to make improvements to my own food. I would rather make it myself than have to pay for a half ass job.

Like Melissa F., I have also been going here on and off for years, and their Baked Pork Chop on Fried Rice is my favourite.  The pork chop recipe is spot on, and today after biking up a good appetite they must have read my mind and gave me an enormous one for the $7.00 meal with drink.  My hot Hong Kong style milk tea was smooth and creamy with just the right acidity and bite to make it a perfect pick-me-up.  My fiancee is addicted to the 'Soy Sauce King' fried noodles, which we order from their breakfast special menu sometimes, although it can be a little hit and miss, sometimes dry, and not enough 'wok hei' as we call it (the innate flavour derived from the searing heat and seasonings in the wok).  Today was one of those slightly off days, but it was still tasty.  And to top off the decadence, I highly recommend ordering a Pineapple Bun with a slice of butter to go with your milk tea... heaven!
