Checking out the art scene on the Sunshine Coast can be daunting. There are a myriad of galleries, studios and shops spread out over a large chunk of real estate. And, depending on your tastes, the gems can be far flung. Certainly, if your aesthetic tends towards the contemporary and modern, the gems are rare indeed.
Without a doubt, one of these has to be Goldmoss Gallery on Lower Road in Roberts Creek. Bon and Lee Roberts (no relation to the creek) have transported a gleaming, contemporary gallery direct from the most stylish district of the city and plunked it amongst the trees and views of the verdant coastal landscape. In doing so, the have rightly left the pretension and stiffness behind, replaced by down-to-earth friendliness. It is a brilliant concept, and a wonder no one thought of it sooner.
A short walk up a hill from the car park area reveals a westcoast modern structure rising from the firs and cedars that could pass for an Erickson or a Thom. Inside, polished concrete floors, high ceilings, skylights and full-height windows create the perfect setting for the art. Also created is a respite for your soul during your gallery-hopping day.
Artists in their own right, Bon and Lee display their works here along side a growing stable of creators and collaborators. But, lest you think this is just some vanity project, the art is of a very high caliber and is tightly and thoughtfully curated around a central theme for each show (recent openings focused on "Infinity" or "Anatomy of Love" for example).
Word is quickly growing on the coast that these openings are the must-attend events of the region. If you are lucky, you may find yourself there on one of these afternoons, admiring great art and sipping a pinot grigio. You would be forgiven for momentarily thinking you were in Yaletown or Soho. But, one glance across the forest canopy to the ocean beyond will tell you that you have been transported somewhere else entirely. -

I know Lee and Bon spoke about doing this 10 years ago: their dream of starting an art gallery. Who wouldn't secretly want to open a high-end restaurant, bookstore, small cafe, or any other impractical proposition?
By God, they've done it, and done it better than I could imagine! They've created a magnificent jewel, nestled in the trees. The open floor plan gives (maybe) 1500-2000 sq feet of exhibition space, fronted by large windows with a view on the ocean.
Lee and Bon have such good taste that you're bound to see something interesting. Their gallery features modern, aesthetically-pleasing art, focusing on artists from the Coast. Today's opening (Infinity) featured paintings by Bon and five others, works on metal pins (hard to describe), Axel Stenzel's fun, quirky metal sculptures, and Lee's exquisite paper works.
I've been to a number of galleries in Canada, USA or in France, and this one ranks right up there among the best. Set aside a couple of hours on your next week-end trip to the Sunshine Coast and look up this hidden, rewarding treason.
