Top notch Szechuan! Honestly the best I've ever had in the U.S. and China for that matter.
We ate here at least twice during a weeklong visit to Vancouver.. and spent the rest of our time thinking/ drooling about this place.
A must try that's worth the skytrain ride to get a taste! -

We have been this place for lunch few times for lunch and found it much more expensive than before!!
They charged $7 for a pot of tea and $8 for a bucket of rice. If you like the spicy dishes, you must love it.
Overall, the foods were delicious and served with good presentation.
Spicy chicken in chili oil - It's free range chicken but the chili oil wasn't that spicy.
Sliced pork on bamboo - The presentation was so special coz the pork hang it on the bamboo rack.
Stir fried Green Beans - it's was ok.
Stir fried Chinese mushroom - the mushroom was so dry and salty.
Fish fillet in wooden bucket - the portion was big but didn't taste good. -

We were visiting with our friends who live in Richmond and they recommended Golden Szechuan because they have eaten here before with much success. For 9 pm on a Saturday night, I was surprised that they told us there would be a wait. We had even called in advance and given the green light to come in since there were available tables. Our whole experience was coloured by the way we were treated by the hostess.
Our friend: We'd like a table for 4 and 1/2. We called ahead and were told to come in.
Hostess: Do you have a reservation?
Our friend: No, we called and were told that reservations were only for parties of 8 and you had tables available.
Hostess: it will be a 5 minute wait.
Our friend: Do you have highchairs?
Hostess: (Looking at me, an adult) You need a highchair? Then it will be 10 minutes.
There was one large round table right in front of the hostess stand that was available, plus a booth visible from where we were standing. 10 minutes from 5 minutes before she knew about the highchair? Seriously?
The hostess then asked us to move so she could seat a party of 2 that walked up behind us, then a party of 3 or 4 got the booth. The large round table sat empty.
Finally, our friends inquired why the people behind us got seated and we were still waiting. She eventually set the table for the large round table but tried to put the 4 with the highchair of us on the busy, corridor side of the table. Whatever. I made space for the highchair out of the aisle before she came back.
Service was just downhill from there. The other tables around us got their tea, their orders placed, even their food before we did. When we finally got someone to take our order they didn't speak English so they went to get someone else because apparently it was our bad to not be native speakers.
The final straws were that they tried to charge us $5 for tea but couldn't explain why and they brought our hot and sour soup without any spoons or a ladle for serving. The soup sat there for awhile until we flagged someone down. Despite our table being right in front of the hostess stand and service area, nobody looked our way. When the hostess saw us motioning for a ladle, she just looked at my friend, made a face and walked away.
Meanwhile the dishes started arriving and we had no utensils to speak of.
In the end, we were all pissed and left.
Should I mention that my friend is one of the nicest, most polite person I've ever met? That my friend is 7 months pregnant and I'm surprised she didn't go ape-shi*t on the hostess when she told us to move and there were no seats for us to wait in, yet an obviously empty table and nobody behind us with reservations?
A definite fail. Zero stars if I could.Listed in: Thanks for giving me rage

Gosh, it's pretty shocking to see some of the low ratings on here. This has pretty much been our "go-to" sichuan restaurant for the past few years. There's nothing comparable to it in the greater Seattle area, and probably likewise for all of North America. If you want to experience Sichuan food as if you were in Chengdu, this is probably the closest you are going to get.
Spicy chicken is typically delicious, loaded with hua jiao ma la peppers. To the person complaining about "numbing" spice-- that's a major feature of Sichuan cuisine, and highly sought-after (rarely found this side of the Pacific). Most of the spicy fish dishes are excellent, although we have definitely been burned by not asking what the "market price" is before ordering (it was good, but not $60 good).
The place is usually packed for dinner, not a lot of english being spoken. This is a pretty large upscale establishment, prices probably higher than I'd like, but then again there's really nowhere else that offers quite as authentic a menu. If you want real Sichuan flavor, this is your best bet this side of China. -

I've been to this restaurant three times. The food is good, but that's the only positive thing I can say.
My biggest complaint is the dismissive attitude of the staff. They make you wait if your party is too small because they want to fill the tables with big parties first. Twice they have refused to give me a booth because there was only two in my party - even though there were many empty booths. As for the table service; there are many staff, but they often ignore you.
The prices are too high for what you get, e.g. $10 for a tiny appetizer consisting of few sticks of celery and a chunk of tofu. And stay away if you don't like very spicy food.
I won't go to Golden Szechuan Restaurant again. -
Review from Anne B.
I had a bad feeling walking into the restaurant at 11.30 on Sunday and the place was completely empty. Completely. Based on experience with other places, usually the place should be packed at this time.
Anyway, the good about this place was that the food had flavor. The bad, it just wasn't good for me. A few of the dishes we ordered had a pepper type spice. It was good adding the heat, but it had this numbing effect on your mouth. Made me feel like I was having an allergic reaction; at least I know the table of 9 was all facing the same feeling and it wasn't just me.
We had planned to go for Xiao Long Baos, but since a friend wanted Szechuanese food and they had them here, we obliged... The frozen Xiao Long Bao I get from Uwajimaya were better. I know I know, for Xiao Long Bao I should head to a Shianghainese place.
Price. Oh my.. the bill was almost $200!! I've never paid this much at a Chinese restaurant, for lunch (or dinner). There was 9 of us, but still, I think the food was way over priced. I can't even think of what would have been the most costly dish. Nothing spectacular. -

Came back to try the tan tan noodles and It was just about as good as it was when I went with Jenny the first time. This time I went with my brother. It was busy @ dinner time. The food just kept coming out of the kitchen to all the tables. This was a good thing.
We had:
Tan Tan Noodles - 4 stars out of 5. Very good. probably still one of the best in town.
Spicy dumplings - spicy, but not too hot. good flavour. I gave it 3.5 stars
Ma Po Tofu - too salty, not enough szechuan pepper flavour. So I have to say Shanghai Cuisine still wins (even with their awful change to adding ketchup!!) 2.5 stars.
We wanted to try the spicy boiling fish slices (a cheaper dish than the one I tried last time) and were hoping it would be better. Next time.
For now, sorry guys, the star rating fell, but I'm sure it'll get right back up there soon!
The place is busy so it's doing something right!Listed in: Flavours of Qong Qing

Review from TheyCallMe R.

This place should really be reviewed in two ways:
1 - as a lunch place, based on the lunch special
2 - as a dinner place, based on the full menu
Let me just state that this review, and 5 star rating, is for the lunch menu.
The lunch menu at this place absolutely ROCKS. For just under 8 bucks you get soup, rice and choice of one dish from the lunch special menu. You have to ask specifically for the lunch special menu... they won't hand it to you when they seat you.
The hostesses at this place have attitude... when you ask for the lunch menu they'll roll their eyes and scrounge around in the hostess stand for some ragged pieces of 8.5x11 paper - compared to the dinner menu these things look terrible, with manual corrections and food stains on them.
But don't be put off! Bring a few friends and each order something. The entrees come on individual plates, and are easily enough to share with 2-4 people! The food is absolutely FAN-TASTIC! As someone noted below, the Ginger beef is a bit non-traditional but we like it anyways.
Give this place a try. At sub-$8 per person for lunch it's a screaming deal and the food is definitely worth it.
Notes and Etc.:
-I am not Asian, and speak only English. Never had a language problem that couldn't be solved using the menu and pointing.
-For dinner I'd rate this place a 3. Food is great but value drops pretty severely. -
Review from Glo F.
This was our last meal before we leave Richmond/Vancouver. We ordered:
The cold tripe appetizer - it was spicy but not overly spicy, it was delicious.
Braised green beans - it was just okay, nothing special.
Ginger Beef......BIG disappointment. The beef was cover in a light batter and deep fried and than saute with a sweet sauce with onions.
House special Chicken - this dish was recommend by the server, they told us it was very hot...see picture. Don't let the peppers fool you, it was not that hot, the dish was a little flat to me, you can really taste Szechuan peppercorn flavor, but we didn't see any in the dish.
I felt the dishes was a little overpriced, but I like they have the authentic type of food for the region as well as a large variety. Too bad there was only two of us. It's really a Szechuan restaurant not Szechuan but we serve Cantonese dishes too.
Services was good, attentive. Roomy booths and large eating area. But please vacuum your floors, why is that so hard to do. Ambiance, okay for first date or evening with friends, but nothing romantic. -

Wow, the food is excellent here, as good as any Sichuan restaurant I've eaten at in California or China.
A bit pricey but worth it.
