I'm surprised there hasn't been a review for Golden Paramount in over a year!

I find it difficult to critique Chinese restaurants since their menus are endless - if there's something you crave and it's not listed, the chef can always make an exception and cook something up for you.

This particular venue is a stellar establishment. I've been here twice and have always left satisfied and stuffed. The staff are friendly, talkative and always making sure you've a clean plate in front of you. The food is your typical Chinese cuisine but this particular restaurant maintains a level of quality. At other places, I've been served dishes that have been too salty or burnt but Golden Paramount has never put themselves in that grouping.

Parking outside is shared with other stores along the same strip mall so it could be frustrating. Heed my warning.

This place is walking distance from my grandparent's house. It has some solid good chinese food. The waiters know my grandparents so we definitely get special attention but even without that the food speaks for itself.
I always walk out of here stuffed and satisfied.

Been here twice now, once for king crab and once fairly recently. Both times I've felt the manager was overly pushy and too quick to recommend the more expensive dishes on the menu while we ordered.

The average dish price was higher than average and while they taste good, you will be left hungry because the portions in this restaurant are ridiculously small. I felt like we were given child-sized orders by accident when some dishes arrived.

The restaurant itself was clean (thus 2 stars), but probably because the high prices and small portions have turned away any potential for repeat customers. The service was pretty standard for a Chinese restaurant in Richmond.

Overall, food was good (not amazing) and if you have an average appetite, expect to leave hungry due to the small portions. There are much better places to eat in Richmond.

Since my Chinese family and friends frequent this establishment on a somewhat regular basis, I've had the opportunity to sample a wide range of dishes. Two disclaimers: (1) the prices aren't cheap, but you do get quality food and service; and (2) like any Chinese restaurant that has an extensive menu that serves everything, you have to figure out which dishes are the good ones.

From anecdotal consensus, Golden Paramount has one of the best BABAO YA (lit. "eight-treasure duck"). This dish, which you must order in advance so that they can prepare it just for you, consists of a deboned duck stuffed with eight ingredients (usually something like glutinous rice, shitake mushrooms, chestnuts, lotus seeds, gingko nuts, smoked ham, shrimp, pork), then gently braised for hours.

On my last visit, we ordered Chinese FRIED MILK WITH PAN-SEARED OYSTERS. Note that this is not deep-fried milk, but rather more like a scrambled mixture of milk, egg whites, lump crabmeat and a handful of pine nuts or slivered almonds. It doesn't taste like milk, nor does it quite taste like egg whites, but has an almost buttery texture that doesn't overwhelm the crabmeat. The fresh oysters - which we substituted for the usual oyster-shaped tofu balls - were exceptionally well done. But they may have been a seasonal item.

As with any finer Chinese restaurant, the trick is to develop a relationship with the manager (the guy in a black suit who darts around the room) so that he can recommend dishes to fill your stomach while impressing your palette. Tell him you don't want regular white people Chinese food; that you want to try the chef's more special creations, etc.

My new favorite Chinese Restaurant. Authentic Chinese cuisine...try the sweet and sour pork. The pork is flaky tender and juicy and not rock hard. Ok so for the authentic Chinese dishes they stir fry milk with crab meat.
Also worth trying is the whole sole (fish) prepared 2 ways. They fillet the flesh and stirfry while the bones (edible v. good actually) they deep fry like fried chicken except it's fish bones. Underneath this is a full entree worth of sweet Chinese veggies.
Soup of the day is $10 (good for 3 - 4 people)
Fried chicken that is absolutely succulent (it's called Salted Baked Chicken on the menu)
