Review from Edward L.
Came here for some late night munchies, or "da lang".
Parking is plentiful here in the wee hours of the night. Can't say what it's like during the day.
Of note are the credit card stickers on the door. This sticks out big time as most other places are cash only in this town. Special mention here.
As the place was pretty deserted, the staff were quite attentive. Other than the time the watiress disappeared behind the counter and giggled like a little girl for a few minutes while getting a massage from the cook. Maybe they're dating.
The interior is mostly clean and looks pretty modern. No complaints there. Looks like they do seafood here, as evidenced by the tanks.
How was the food? Like most greasy spoons out there, but without the grease. My friends and I were surprised by the quality.
Thousand year egg congee, "mini-boat" congee - nice large chunks of stuff in the congee. Beautiful.
Deep fried baby fish - peppers mixed throughout, with deep fried garlic sprinkled on top. A bit interesting as most other places also mix the garlic bits for you.
Clams with black bean sauce - great flavour. I'm not sure about the freshness though, as many of the pieces were physically detached from the shell. Maybe it happened during the cooking process but I'm not sure. Tasted fine though. Pieces were not stale.
Deep fried pork intestine - served with sweet sauce. Oh baby. Nice large pieces, and they were stacked. Not greasy at all either.
I couldn't decide which dish was was my favourite. I think I found my new late-night haunt. Recommended. -

Another typical Chinese noodles and fried rice restaurant opened in Richmond.
We planned to go to next door Chou Chow restaurant for lunch, however, we didn't make any rsvn and no table for walk-in customer. Therefore, we came here to try.
Well.... nothing impress at all and just average food.
Congee was good but just a bit powdery. The stir fired chicken and prawn with flat rice noodles was huge and greasy. -

Was there tonight for late nite good (after the failing of both Deer Garden Signatures, see my reviews of them). I ordered one late night dish (fried ribs with pepper and salt), and one bowl of rice. The rice never came. I finished the ribs and never bother to ask for the rice again. One table had a big complaint about "free congee", and the waitress had a big talk with them. This is not the first time I saw complaints and the big talk and also apologies heard. Why do they have so much complaints from customers? I probably would have some too, although sometimes I didn't bother to.
A month ago I was there during a very busy time to make an order of a congee for take out (it's for someone else, so I didn't have a choice). I stood there for 20+ minutes waiting for the congee, while it was sitting on the counter for 20 minutes. Nobody told me that it was ready. I paid money already but I had no receipts, and no order number etc. Since they were super busy, I didn't find anyone to ask.
Often the tables were not clean, and several times I saw big pieces of left over food under the table. They had no time to clean the place, nor they inspect it before letting customers to the table.
The food is actually not bad. Wonton noodle is not as good as Michigan though. Other foods are actually quite good.
The waitresses they have are not very professional. Some act as if they come out from villages, talking with their fingers pointing, and don't have any sophistication. They don't seem to understand that "the customer is always right". I told the waitress that the rice never came. Her first response:
"I didn't charge you for the rice." (Yes, I know, I saw the bill).
"You should have told me to ask for the rice later, as I could have placed a double order, and then there will be big problem cancelling the order on the computer, as I have no authority to do the cancellation..blah blah blah."
(So why didn't she tell me that when I made the order w/ the ribs? She responded "One bowl of rice." repeated after me and that's it. Now the excuse?)
I have been going to this place since they opened months ago. Averaging about once to 5 times in a month, but less so lately because of their lack of service.
When I left, the owner came in, I could have said something but I didn't. Again, this is not atypical: good food, but lousy service and inconsistent cleaniness.
BTW, I am a Cantonese speaker so I can converse fluently with the staff there, communication is not a problem language wise.
Also , one time late night, the waitress told me that I was "lucky" to be able to pay by credit card as they were closing the system (that was 12am midnight, but they open till 2am). I wonder what if I haven't brought any cash with me to cover the meal? Why would I be lucky? She seemed so reluctant to accept the card, and also told me that my card didn't work the first time. When I saw it, it was not rejected, it merely asked me to select English or Francais (French sp?). How can she not understand the operation of the credit card merchant machine if she is the person handling it (the other waitresses do not do this function)?
They have a pretty busy business at busy times (weekend dinner time), but very quiet at late night and afternoon time.
I might go there again if I'm really hungry and don't care about the rest. But unlike in the past, it's difficult for me to take other people there. It's just not comfortable enough for some people that I know who expect better level of service.
Bad management and not fully qualified staff.
