Such a sexy little place!
There was a man sitting on the floor pillow with two women on his arms, feeding them cake...perhaps a wife, and a mistress? 2 mistresses? Who knows...
Soup was very overpriced but delicious nonetheless.
Latte was just okay.
They ask for your name when you order and put it on the board which you take back to your table to receive your order. I like to go incognito and give them my initials. ;)
There is a deli/bakery if you walk up the ramp where you will find more intriguing options; that's if nothing at the cafe tickles your fancy.
They deliver within the downtown core and cater...wooh! -

Best sugar donut ball w/ its specialty cream inside...yummy!
Great place to people watch too, esp. by the window ;)
It's worth the pricey $6/hr parking on West Cordova! -

I will typically sit in this cafe for hours with my notebook, it's just in my neighborhood and it's cozy, good ambience. They have TV, free wi-fi.
Some items are overpriced and not too worthy so be selective.
My choices when I come here are:
- Matcha latte
- Panini (Lucchese but I change the bread to walnut cranberry, my favorite)
- Pizza (I always have funghi) -

The breakfast bruschetta is beyond delicious. The only complaint I have about this sandwich is there are too many grape tomatoes on the plate. The baristas gave my coffee away also. Naughty naughty! This is a bustling, sleek cafe will have you satisfied and on your way in no time. It sure beats the Starbucks around the corner.

Lovely spot! After yoga class I was looking for a light Sunday brunch in the downtown area and was happy to find Giovane open and bustling but with still plenty of sitting room. With mostly an uppercrust clientele of travelling biz types and some sprinking of tourists (due to its location next to the Fairmont), the quality is on par with what you might expect from the neighbourhood. I ordered a portobello panino, which came with a small salad and pickles, and an earl grey tea (with soy milk). The total set me back about $13 after tax.
Service was prompt and friendly. I love that they personalize your placeholder with your name instead of a number. Nice touch!
My portobello was perfectly marinated and was well complimented by yummy tomato-walnut pesto, red onion, argula, provolone and a lovely olive panino bread. I was a bit worried when I saw that the dressing on the house salad. I had forgotten to ask for it on the side. I've noiced that the balance of vinegar and oil seems difficult to achieve and unfortunate attempts have often ruined salads for me in the past. But I was relieved and delighted to find a perfect mixture and prompted finished every last bite!
My only nit is that there is no free wifi. You are obliged to register through the hotel. Due to the number of business lunches that likely take place here, that seems an unfortunate hassle.
Other than that, I think Giovane is satisfying treat for the hungry urbanite. -

Perfect spot to get a coffee if you are walking around the sea wall. The lattes are totally par with the likes of Cafe Medina. The Macha Latte was amazing! The Mocha was average.
I am actually beginning to warm up to the Coal Harbour cafes. It's all about clean lines and good-posture inducing hard plastic chairs.
Oh do not make eye contact with the desert case. Deadly. :) -
Review from Amy T.
This is the little cafe inside the Pacific Rim hotel with the 6 foot letter "g" outside of their door. I had the panini and salad here for lunch with a friend and we both ended up ordering paninis.
I ordered the Lucchese panini which was Roasted chicken, gruyere, sun-dried tomato pesto and garlic aioli. It was good, but when I tried her Charcuterie panini, my eyes widened with joy. This panini had soppressata, prosciutto, Genoa salami, peperonata and fontina aioli. It was a cheeseboard wrapped up in 1 bite. The cheese was melted over the salty prosciutto and salami sandwiched between chewy olive bread. What a satisfying lunch on a cold day! A soup to go with the panini would have made it perfect. The salad that came with the panini was boring and tasteless. I didn't end up eating much of it. But I did end up eating half of my friend's panini! I love sharing! =P
The decor was modern with accents of yellow splashed throughout. It was just enough color without being too cheesey.
Giovane Cafe is a little pricey, but for the location, setting and ingredients, it was worth it.Listed in: Lunchin' Downtown

Coffee is fruity and acidic. +1 for compostable cups, -4 for slow service. Didn't try the food, but the treats are supposed to be good.

Sugar bun and black forest cake.
Sugar bun is one of Giovane's signature baked goods. The breast-implant-looking bun (coated with a generous layer of granulated white sugar) is one mean mean bun. The bun itself is very soft. Be careful when sink your teeth into it because the vanilla pastry cream will be oozing out all over the place. The filling cream is smooth and silky with a light hint of vanilla. The mean part about this bun is the not-so-sweet filling. Not-so-sweet filling means you can easily over dose on it. Cream lovers, consider your waist line warned. This bad boy sugar bun can do some damage if you allow it. This one I'll rate 4.5/5.
Black forest cake. 7 layers. This is another mean dessert due to its rich flavor. I managed to only finish half. Damage reduced by half - pat on the back. This sinful treat is comprised of complex flavors (chocolate, sour cherry, and vanilla cream) and multiple textures. 3 out of 4 layers are moist dark chocolate cakes with coarsely-chopped raw coco bits. 1 of the 7 layers is a sour cherry paste with a chewy bite. I personally prefer eating the layers individually rather than having it all together. When you take in all the 7 layers in one bite, what happens is the heavier flavors and textures will inevitably mask the lighter ones. Overall, I give it a 4/5.

Way too expensive!!! I will never come here again unless there is absolutely no other place that is open! That's what happened today - all other coffee shops nearby the Vancouver Convention Centre were closed, which is why I went to Giovane earlier this morning to get some coffee. $7.00 for a large brewed coffee and a baked good is ridiculous! And they did not offer any discount for providing my own coffee mug! They should at least offer a little bit of discount and encourage people to bring their own mug - less paper or material for them to use, which is always desirable.

The music and ambiance are lovely once you sit down inside. Pretty much all Italian food menu including the wines and cheeses. Ordered two types of crostini - roasted pepper with garlic and .
The flight of wines at $15 is a steal!! Their list of Italian cheeses has nice paring with condiments and pairs well with the wines. Three or four kinds of pizza - the one with egg wedges is my favorite!
Both times I went I've received excellent service with smiles even when it was busy. It's perfect place for a cozy night out. -
Review from Allen W.
I think the quality has slipped over the past year. Sad. My favourite sour cherry scones were under baked and not very good on my last visit, which had also been the case on another previous visit. Also, free wi-fi never seems to work.
Stopped by the other evening to discover it's now a wine bar at night.
Great -- just what Vancouver needed is more wine, cheese and charcuterie. Why can't a bakery/cafe, just be a bakery/cafe?!? You made great pastries, so why not make that the focus of your cafe?
If anything, I had been hoping you'd extend the evening hours so I could come by for coffee and pastries after dinner. But, nope ... now it serves wine, pizzas, charcuterie in the evenings. I'm SO over charcuterie (i.e. sliced meats so we don't have to actually cook anything but can charge you an arm and a leg).
And, aside from serving wine and sliced meats, the only difference I noticed was dimmer lighting and candles on the cafe tables. Um, wow.
I'll note that it was a Friday night at about 8pm and I saw one customer.
I'm less likely to now come during the daytime as it now seems the business is spreading itself a bit thin and can't commit to being the wonderful cafe that it once was when it first opened.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Great coffee, great service and awesome food.
They use 49th Parallel coffee/espresso beans... enough said.
All of their baked items are made fresh in-house, however, if you want any you really need to go before 3 as they're pretty much completely gone by then.
Sandwiches are original and, like everything else, made fresh.
I've heard rumours that their sticky buns are heavenly, but I've never made it early enough to grab one for myself- it'll have to be a summer project.
Giovane is your safest bet when you're taking out a client and want them to be impressed. -

Upscale casual breakfast connected to the Fairmont Pacific Rim. The place is marked with a large "g" with entrance on Cordova. I had the latte, fruit salad, and breakfast bruschetta - $17 total. Everything was fresh and delicious. Free wi-fi to boot.

Review from Irena L.
I like this place, food is not to die for (except their chocolate ganache cake), place is cool, and staff is courteous. It is a nice place to stop by for a coffee and a dessert. Their pizzas are not exceptional, but then again if you want an exceptional pizza you don't go to a cafe! Paninis are decent, I tried the tuna one, and proscuitto. I also tried their sugar bun (both vanilla and chocolate filling) which was tasty, but not my favourite (sorry to disappoint you). I like chocolate ganache cake the most. I also tried rasberry mousse cake, and didn't really enjoy it since the mousse is not fluffy, it's very thick;/
Not very impressed with the coffee, Artigiano and JJBean still do it the best! Teas are nice.
I would give it a 3.5 star because the place is worth a visit, and it's in a beautiful hotel. -

Upon the recommendation from a friend I went out to find this cafe. Turns out it's actually accesible from West Cordova as opposed to Canada Place.
Appropriately priced for being in an upscale hotel but the pannini as delicious. The waitress suggested an appropriate wine and nobody hassled me despite hanging out and working for quite some time after I finished my meal. -
Review from Ramon V.
Giovane, I'm taking off one star. The ol' 8oz / 12oz / 16oz 2-shot Americano pricing is the oldest trick in the book, and too many shops are doing the same thing. If you cared about your coffee, you wouldn't serve a more watered down drink for more money than a smaller, richer one. Let's fix it. Do a triple shot large, or get rid of the price increase for the 4 extra ounces of hot water.
With that out of the way, it's not a bad shop. The treats are unique. Giovane is licensed, and you can treat yourself to a selection of beers ranging from Whistler to Unibroue breweries.Listed in: Vancouver Americanos

I can't help but notice there are hardly any comments on the espresso or coffee!
My husband is an espresso snob (he's Italian) and he claimed Giovane's was one of the best espressos he has ever had! This is coming from a man who does not hand out a compliment very easily.
I had a soy mocha as this is my beverage of choice and it was awesome. They use real chocolate and it is thick and divine.
I cannot comment on the food as we go only for the espresso! -

Giovane Cafe at the Fairmont Pacific Rim celebrated its one-year anniversary with a small, quaint, intimate little tweetup to celebrate the occasion, replete with free sticky buns.
The cafe is pretty cool. It feels like a little treasure chest in the Waterfront area. I had never been. It's something you walk past a millions times. It's hard to miss the giant yellow "G" and scooter out front.
It was a nice little get together, mingling over coffee and treats. The vanilla bean pastry cream buns were quite good. -

BIG expectations... total Pizza BOMB. As a real estate pro n expert pizza maker, I had great expectations from Giovane. I mean this is afterall one of the nicest hotels in ALL of Vancouver! So any pizza that comes from a retail tenant should be at the very least, GOOD!
The decor is very moderne n stylish and fits right into the Fairmont. Today I am only reviewing their pizza. I speak f exp... I truly understand pizza inside n out!
I stepped fwd to order a fresh or from the fridge pizza, lady says, this is what we have. Wow, v nice, 3hr+ pizza sitting on albeit v expensive stone out in open air... (well, I'm sure I wouldn't get sick) as she cont'd to explain that it would be reheated... but geez, this is sup to be a first class joint n they are serving old room temp pizza w no option of any from fridge or the back. I understand they don't specialize in pizza, that is even more reason why they should display their pizza in a warmer or have "fresher" options f the back. Don't get me wrong... I was still going to order my pizza, until, until I discovered... the lady didn't know approx how long the pizza was made (it was def quite old) nor did she know how it was made... certain styles can be reheated n still taste great!
Eat in pizza should be GOOD, there are no excuses... everything is under ctrl... even time. They don't specialize in pizza so I don't think a truly classic italian thin crust (yes, true Italian style has very LITTLE TOPPINGS) would be good as it is only good when made to order... definitely something on a warming plate/cabinet or from the fridge... there is a v well known joint on Denman which does this very same pizza in room temp shelf thingy, which imo is v v WRONG!!!
I walked away empty handed :( and v sad because the Fairmont is one of my fav buildings dtwn and really want to eat and like this place! Oh well... after reading all the great sticky bun reviews... I look fwd to reviewg about Giovane sticky buns! -

I'm downtown literally everyday but I never heard or knew about this cafe.
This is my new favorite cafe in town. Had a delicious cafe late and espresso today from a very pleasant lady. I forgot to ask what coffee they use but it was very sweet.
Had the Sugar Bun and it was great as well.
A really big, spacious and really cool cafe in downtown Vancouver. Who would have known? -

I was a daily regular at Giovane when they opened back just before the Olympics. I had close to 30 days straight of their crazy good Sugar Buns before my buns began to feel less like sugar and more like loaves. Lately I drop in for old times sake usually once every other week.
Highlights are the custard filled Sugar Buns (worth at least one visit on their own) and a contemporary decor that is reflective of the Fairmont Pacific Rim's clean stying and uber cool set. They use a 49th Parallel coffee bean repacked with their Giovane logo. Staff training is reasonably good but not as consistent as some of the local stars like JJ Bean or 49th Parallel on 4th Avenue (which ironically uses the same bean). I always order an 8 ounce cappuccino and they really don't get the crema consistency or fused micro bubble foam throughout the cup like I really want. It is more like a latte and the crema is not really smooth. A temperature modulator might help.
The food is aways good. Have ordered paninis, salads and of course the Sugar Buns many times. Desserts are also quite good.
Overall the Sugar Buns are amazing but the coffee experience lacks a bit of finesse for my rather fussy expectations every morning. For the price and surroundings I would expect a bit more. -

* Ok - but still not there... *
I just had to give this spot a try based upon all of the extremely positive Yelp reviews - particularly those that discussed the excellent house-made Italian style thin crust pizza. Vancouver is seriously lacking in that department, so I just had to visit and try it out.
My conclusion? Vancouver is still seriously lacking in that department.
While the pizza I had was better than many of the ones in Vancouver, it still wasn't amazing.
What could make it better:
1) The crust. It was soggy. As if they had baked it and then let it sit on a plate accumulating moisture and then reheated it. Not a big surprise considering I saw a few pizzas sitting on the counter waiting for people to order them. I imagine that even though it took 15 minutes I still somehow got a reheated one. It also didn't have that slightly charred flavour I love in a good pizza crust.
2) The toppings. They were stingy. There was a single basil leaf that had been sliced into 4 pieces that were on 4 slices of the pizza. A single leaf. Come on. The spicy salami had about 6 small slices and they had no noticeable heat.
3) The presentation. They cut the pizza into little slices. Just serve it whole and let us cut it as we like. The presentation ended up looking more like a frozen pizza you bake at home that comes pre-sliced.
4) The counter staff could use some additional training - she wasn't the normal level of professionalism you would expect from a Fairmont based upon watching her interactions with the (granted) slightly difficult customers in front of me on line.
5) The free wifi. Wasn't working.
Overall it wasn't terrible. But it wasn't something I would rush back for either.Listed in: Vancouver European Food

Review from Vincci L.
On a weekday morning, this place is busy!
Finally got to try their breakfast here. Order up front, then you pick up your drinks and they bring the food to you. This morning, I opted for an Italian Sausage Strata with onion, sausage, tomato, sweet pepper, parmigiano, and croutons, and an iced latte with almond syrup.
The iced latte was smooth and delicious as usual. We waited for about 10 minutes for our food, because they needed to heat it up.
When we received it, we got it all packed up in a bag. Not what we asked for. We unpacked it, asked for some plates, and dined on them instead.
One bite into the strata and it was lukewarm, almost cold. Hmm. I thought I had to wait for my food because they were heating it up. I'm pretty picky about the temperature of my food.
The flavour was good though, with bits of the veggies dispersed throughout. It also came with a side bowl of fruit.
Given that it's Fairmont owned, prices here are a bit higher than usual. For the $9 that I paid for the strata, it was a bit much.
Despite all that, they still have wonderful desserts (pumpkin cheesecake!) and their famous sugar bun. Also, I know that the iced latte here is always made perfectly, so I will come back here, maybe just not for breakfast.Listed in: Sweet Treats.

Vancouver, BC
In the walking portion of my commute, I pass by Waves, Artigiano, Blenz, Starbucks and Take 5 - just add a JJ Bean on my route and I think that's pretty much every 'gourmet' coffee chain in Vancouver (note the quotation marks). Giovane is also on my route - given the shining reviews, I should be damned lucky right?
Giovane is damned ritzy for a coffeeshop being attached to the Fairmont Vancouver and can easily identified by the large yellow lowercase 'g' out front or by the yellow sidecar. There are a few nice touches - I especially like the grapefruit-flavoured pitchers of water.
Well - I haven't sampled any of their food or baked goods, but I've been here a few times for coffee. My poison: black Americanos. Giovane's Americanos are very smooth ($3 for large) - would probably be best enjoyed over a idle afternoon conversation. However, a bit lacking for the java jolt that I'm after early in the morning (or - well - any other time I want espresso). I'm accustomed to bolder shots and tasted overly watery to me. On a second try, I asked the barista to hook up a long shot -- a bit better but still weak in my book. While really smooth - just not my cup of... coffee. -

An up market italian cafe sports bar located within the new Fairmont Pacific Rim. The long room is street side with matching long windows that looks out onto Waterfront St. towards the corner of Burrard St.
They are open early for breakfast and serve a topnotch 49th Parallel espresso. The morning menu has fresh made brioche and offers a lovely Breakfast Bruschetta topped with poached eggs. Also on the menu is a large panini selection, and freshly made daily pizza, made with italian love from the bakery within.
Speaking of their bakery, it is fired up all day and fills the room with the sweet aroma of fresh made cinnamon rolls & brioche.. Does it get any better.Listed in: My morning coffee crawl

APPLE PIE SIGHTING!
... apple pie galette to be exact... and I saw it the first time I walked into this place.. but this time.. I ATE IT... and at $6 a slice, it was worth every bite.
I knew what I was getting into... and I say to myself -
"Rach - seriously... you are spending six dollars for a measly piece of pastry.. you can make it yourself at home.... do you really want to do this?"
YES I DO!
This galette was layer after layer of sweetness and thinly sliced apples, with the pastry that wraps up and slighly over the top. Having it heated up was great because it was warm and tasty, and the pastry was super soft and easy to cut into.
Sharing with my boyfriend and watching the world cup game on the only TV in the entire cafe, I would consider it a cute date on a saturday afternoon.
Upon leaving, we got an iced latte to go... I think they use 3.25% milk.. this drink was so creamy it tasted like ice cream... uber satisfaction... watch out skim milk drinkers!Listed in: World away from Starbucks.., I Love Apple Pie :)

Review from Awesta M.
I was meeting some friends here for dinner and drinks. We seated ourselves and the waitress came over promptly to provide us with
menus/wine lists.
Figuring out the pizza choices was easy but the wine was more difficult. The waitress sent over the sommolier to give us some recommendations. I'm always a little wary of this tactic because of the whole upselling aspect. But the sommolier was extremely helpful. Never tried to upsell us just gave us information about the wines we were interested in and even a little extra information about corks (which I genuinely enjoyed because I'm such a neophyte).
The pizzas were delicious. They were thin and tasty and were waaay to easy to eat. The wine was exactly what we expected which was great. I thought the overall experience was great.
The only thing I would say that it's kind of a weird place it's trying to straddle. It's a little bit more expensive then a regular sandwich shop (and nicer) but not nice enough to be as upscale as it's trying to be. -

I love the G spot.
First time coming here, we were on our way to Whistler and decided to drop in for breakfast.
It's not cheap, but the qualtiy is good. I hear the cakes are even better, but I can't eat the cakes or the cookies or the pastries or whatever. I did have a coffee and a paninni type breakfast sandwich.
If I worked downtown, I'd come here more often. It's as simple as that.
A metropolitan trendy place to have your quick lunch, coffee of whathaveyou's.

The clean-looking minimalist and yet comfortable cafe is a perfect spot for a light continental breakfast on the weekend. There is ample seating in the cafe - banquettes, bars along the garage door size windows, fireplace, and tables for 4 in the middle.
With our morning coffee today, we shared a cinnamon bun and a sugar bun with creamy custard. Both were delicious and, yes, sinful. We sat by the window watching the occasional cars going by on Cordova Street on a quiet Sunday morning.
My only complaint - They close at 8pm. -

North Vancouver, BC
A very strong 5 stars for this little piece of Euro heaven in the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel. First of all: the Sugar Buns. A beautifully perfect sweet bun filled with vanilla cream. Not too sweet, not too rich. Also available in a chocolate version.
The sandwiches are on house-made breads and come with a small salad. Delivered to your seat warm and delicious. The salad is not the usual pinch of organic greens from a plastic container. It is a variety of "greens" and is a nice treat.
The cakes and desserts are imaginative and beautiful....and the coffee is some of the best in town. This is a new fave for me....the decor is colourful and tasteful and there are artsy magazines, books and gift items available for purchase.
I'm anxious to try their breakfasts..... -

The Genovese was tasty, but not my perfect sandwich in quite the same way as the Portobello.
The only negative thing I have to say is about the side salads. The best way I can think to describe them is lawn clippings dressed in the way a spa smells - eucalyptus, lemon and rosemary. I chose to skip it the second time around.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Located inside Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel so you can expect this place to live up to it's location.
GF and I just needed a quick bite before we explored Vancouver. Ordered the Lucchese panini with a side of fruit for about $10 CDN. The girl taking our order knew we were splitting the meal so she asked if we wanted her to split the meal. I thought she was just going to slice the panini in half and give us one plate. She delivered it to our table on 2 separate plates! Delicious and light breakfast to start the day.

Is there a more beautiful letterform than the lowercase G?
Is there a more tempting sight than the crema of a freshly poured espresso?
Is there a more annoying form of writing than the rhetorical question?
The Fairmont Pacific Rim has opened a street-facing cafe in their newest Vancouver location (I count five now), ostensibly to offer a slice of their guests' charmed life to the rest of the plebes walking by.
As one might expect from a high-end hotel, the food prices are unconscionable, but at $2.50 for a12oz Americano, the coffee is quite competitive -- and quite good.Listed in: Coffee time
