We met some friends in Banff this weekend and had to pick a decent place to go and have dinner. We chose Italian and Giorgio's in particular as it was on the main drag, looked decent and the outdoor display menu seemed to have something good for all of us! Who doesn't like Italian?
We waited a bit to be seated. From the first second we met her, the waitress was detached and seemed pre-occupied.
The place had a bit of an odd smell - I think the owners need to rip out the old carpet in there and update it a bit. Is it just me? I think carpets should be outlawed in eateries. The restaurant looked nicer from the outside, you will know what I mean if you decide to check this place out.  I think it wants to be fine dining but it is not quite there.
2 of us ordered apps. The calamari came out unbreaded and in a nice large piece surrounded by capers on the plate. I was told it was very good. The carpaccio was said to be very good as well.
My husband ordered the pappardelle with mushrooms and sirloin strips. He was not wowed by it stating that the sauce had a weird taste which it did.
One friend had the lamb and beef rigatoni. Now, I like my pasta el dente but this pasta was crunchy (I did try it). I cannot believe she did not send back this undercooked dish.
Another friend had the fettuccine with pesto sauce and was able to sub the chicken for shrimp. She enjoyed it.
I ordered a $25 chicken parm. The chicken was dry on top and I had to ask for a but of tomato sauce to moisten it. It was served on a bed of fettuccine alfredo that was well seasoned and somewhat balanced out the blandness of the chicken. No salt was to be found on the table - not good. The cayenne pepper made its appearance from my purse for this meal!
My portion was good, I was able to take half of mine home.
For $9, my husband opted for the tiramisu, his fave dessert but not on this occasion - he did not remotely enjoy it. It even looked very underwhelming and sad.
One friend got the chocolate gelato and she said it could have been sweeter.
So, the food was hit and miss, 3 stars. The pasta seemed to be fresh and not dried, I did appreciate this.
Service - I am being generous in giving it a 2. The waitress was absent most of the time, and forgot to split our cheques.
We all had one glass of wine or beer. Average.
    Atmospehere 2 1/2.

We won't go back to this restaurant while in Banff again, there are just too many other places to go and blow $100 per couple.

    Awful food:
The free foccacia bread was dry and very old, while the pasta dishes were bland and uninspired.

The ginger ale was watered down and refills cost over $3.00 (ridiculous).

    Awful service:
The service was the worst we experienced in Banff. The hostess was miserable and the waiter was uninvolved.

It's advertised by Banff brochures and is a definite tourist trap. AVOID! There are many amazing places in Banff, avoid this place.

The last time I was at this restaruant was during a junior high ski trip. That was MANY moons ago. I still remember the tortellini I ordered! T die for!

I returned there this past weekend. I was in Banff with my husband. It was his first trip to the Rockies and our 2nd year anniversary!

We were torn where to dine. Lots of options in Banff for fine dinning. I have to admit, I am not a huge fan eating out anymore. I have come to love cooking and having the ability to crack open a cookbook and cook just about anything leaves dinning out a bit undesirable.

We opted for Italian. Simple. Lots to choose from. Pasta, meat, seafood.

We started with a white wine and some calamari. The calamari was ok. My husband is from Egypt and we spent time there last year. The seafood is amazing. When you order calamari you are not eating batter, you are eating some very hearty squid.

The calamari in Alberta, thus far, is sub-standard. At Giorgio's the pieces of calamari are very small. You feel like you are just eating batter.

Next was our main dishes. I had the seafood linguine. It was ok. Something I can whip up at home. There was shrimp, clams and mussels. I think some scallops would have finished off the dish.

My husband had the duck with cannelloni stuffed with duck confit. It was paired with a fig compote that he was not very excited over.

The highlight was probably the bread basket. Nice, fresh bread!

Our bill came out to $82. Kept thinking the meal we could have prepared ourselves with that money. Pretty confident if we went to a different place the cost would have been over $100.

Great place for dinner although a bit on the pricey side. Portions are sizeable, food was good, service was up to par.

I had their spaghetti carbonara with a side of asparagus. I thought my meal was nicely done. My husband had the cannelloni, which was also pretty good. One of our friend just wanted spaghetti with marinara sauce and bison meatballs. The kitchen was kind enough to whip him up some off menu. Along with with our meal, we had a nice bottle of Italian wine. We were so stuffed at the end we didn't even have room for dessert.

This was our best dining experience on our trip to Banff by far. EVERYTHING we had was excellent here and the portions were generous! We had the Cioppino, the salmon and Canelloni. My favorite was the Cioppino, but I also loved the other dishes too. The service was excellent! very friendly waitress. 2 days later, we decided to go here again for lunch and had the Seafood Risotto. Mmmmm! My husband and I split one dish and we had more than enough on both of our plates to fill us and some left over. The prices are reasonable too. I'm surprised there aren't more good reviews of this restaurant. I highly recommend this place.
