Pizza is now, has for sometime been, and will continue to be a staple of the University student diet. Anyone who finds fault with this is advised to find solace in the fact that, more often than not, actual tomatoes were harmed in the preparation of the sauce, thus guaranteeing that some form of vegetable was actually consumed by the stressed-out students in question.
With this in mind... the Gino's on Main, located right across from McMaster University, is just what you'd expect a pizza shop near a campus to be: open late, lots of traffic between classes, not very big - only a few seats at a counter area, and just about as greasy as humanly possible (the pizza, not the seating area itself). Those who are taken from the warm embrace of campus (via a mysterious process known as "graduation") find themselves unable to stomach the thought of eating another slice there, but to cramming students or those merely enjoying a night of revelry, the tasty, tasty slices are more than a little alluring.
The slices are generous, and the selection of slices is simply astonishing to those accustomed to the standard "pepperoni, cheese or deluxe" at other, lesser suburban pizza vendors. On any given day there are twelve to sixteen different kinds of slices available, with three to four of those as various kinds of veggie. The various deals offered are welcome, too - the slice club cards may be gone (or back again?), but three slices for $5 was always a hard bargain to pass up. The deals get even better as you approach closing time - 5 slices for $5 at 6pm on a Sunday was not unheard of in days gone by.
One last thing: when I ran group events and needed pizza for 50 or more people, Gino's was amazing. I'd just phone up, say I had 50 people, and later that day, 20 some pizzas would arrive by car. There always seemed to be enough interesting pizzas (meat lovers, tex-mex, roast chicken, etc.) to keep everyone - including the vegetarians - happy, and after having them provide pizza for a few events, they started throwing in an extra pie or two or five every time. The same can't be said for Paradise Catering's pies, which people only seem to tolerate due to hunger (Broccoli? Fully congealed cheese? Really?).
