Review from Cody S.
This is a Hong Kong cafe. Don't let the name fool you. If you can understand that, having western and eastern food on the same menu is ok and quite convenient.
Having said that, this is one of the better HK cafe's in Richmond and certainly one of my favourites. I'm pretty sure every time we have come here was for the wide array of choices on the menu, fast service, and decent prices. I'm a big fan of curry in these kinds of restaurants so I always go with the beef tongue yellow curry on rice. I always, for some reason, like to eat mild curry and rice after a long Friday or Saturday night...the tongue is always a good bet if you like tender fatty meat. The baked dishes, especially the creamy seafood on rice, are also on my favourites list.
The atmosphere is really kind of dull and sterile feeling. Sometimes the place is kind of cold, sometimes way too hot. It doesn't need to be anything more than it is, though. I like it. -
Review from kath r.
My meal here the other night might single handedly be one of the worst meals I've eaten in a long, long time. I was starving and I still didn't finish my food.
Finding ourselves in Richmond late on Sunday night with a hankering for Asian food beyond Chinese and Japanese (friends) and a craving for Laksa (me) we ended up at Ginger and Garlic Malaysian Restaurant and Grill.
The name should've tipped me off. Sure, my granny uses both ginger and garlic in her cooking but they're not ingredients i think of when describing Malay food to new diners (sambal, belacan, tamarind, turmeric).
I'm not sure what type of restaurant used to be here, but from the looks of the decor I'd go with Mediterranean (the twisted grape leaves and columns made me think Italian or Greek). There's very little in the way of ambiance and the inattentive staff weren't overly welcoming, after sitting without a menu for too long, I had to get up and ask for one.
The menu was overwhelmingly huge and included more than just Malay dishes, separate pages for Chinese and Western food (a very bad sign) also featured.
We ordered:
Roti canai; one tiny bowl of very sweet and rich curry and one nuked roti.
Chicken satay: 6 just cooked sticks of satay accompanied by a thin peanut sauce, and no ketupat (rice cake) or red onion, just a couple of rubbery pieces of cucumber.
Pineapple fried rice: a big heaping yellow yet unappetizing plate of cluggy rice with plenty of pineapple and not much else.
Kung Pow chicken: lots of little corn pieces, chicken and green peppers in a thick and very sweet sauce.
Laksa: very rich curry paste, lots of small shrimp and chunks of fried tofu atop a mass of vermicelli noodles.
Overall, the food was unappetizing, very rich and about as far removed from authentic or even fusion that one could imagine. I won't be back and I certainly wouldn't recommend eating here. And there's no liquor license so not a Tiger beer to wash away the taste :( -

The food is actually pretty decent for its price. Service is above average than that of other Hong Kong style restaurants.
The thing that bugs me is that when I order desserts, unless it is a very common order, they make an excuse to not serve it (ex: ice machine broken, or sold out of a certain ingredient). I'm assuming they just put the dessert items on the menu so it looks nice buy they don't actually make the desserts.
