If you are looking for amazing Chinese food near UBC, this might be it.   I love their speedy delivery (and unforgettable phone number: 604-222-2223) and excellent food  (check previous review) so I decided to try dining-in for the first time.  I was really impressed by the cleanliness of the restaurant and the good lighting (not too bright, not dark)  and overall calm atmosphere.  I love how its in Point Grey, where it is so relaxed and quiet even during weekends.

Lunch is about $9, which includes rice, wonton soup or sweet and sour soup or spring rolls.

The squid curry and shrimp with vegetables were not at all greasy nor heavy which was perfect for lunch.  Vegetables tasted very fresh and to my surprise didn't taste so westernized.  However, the sweet and sour soup I had leaned more towards the western side (because of its sweetness)

So, I'd say it is a hit or miss since some dishes may be more westernized than others, but I don't have a problem with it so it was great.  Try their dim sum dishes!  I had their turnip pastry and it was delicious!! ($4 for 3)

Overall an excellent place to have a quick hot meal.

This has been my neighbourhood Szechuan restaurant for nearly 20 years (the majority of my life). They've definitely gone through their phases of good, to bad, to great cooks.

Originally when they opened this place it was called the PewKee Restaurant which earned them a spot on Jay Leno's Tonight Show in the famous headlines section where they make fun of funny headlines or signs.

Chinese food is often a difficult review because honestly, the best Szechuan in the Metro Vancouver area really is 2 stars above this place, but the worst places are many many stars below.

There are a several dishes worth trying:

Most notably the green bean special or the asparagus special when they're in season. You'll see them post paper neon signs on the walls of the various specials. These two dishes are simply to die for if you don't mind a bit of garlic, onions, oil fried green beans/asparagus, and of course pickled radish.

The ginger beef is above average. I wouldn't call it 'exceptional' and you can find better in Vancouver, but its better than most places which says a lot.

The deluxe orange peel chicken or the regular orange peel chicken has always been a favourite of mine. This dish has been one that's fluctuated in quality over the years, but lately they've returned to lean boneless chick breast which makes it just awesome.

Hot and Sour Soup. They've altered this dish to a more western appetite (which considering the area was a smart choice) so its not quite as strong both in sour and hot as you'll find in many 100% authentic Szechuan restaurants. A good place you'll find the sour gives you that little kick in your sinuses.

If you're not into spicy then I strongly recommend the minced chicken and cream corn soup. Now it's hard for anyone to get this dish wrong because its so simple to make, but nothing really beats this soup for lunch on a cold and wet Vancouver day.

They've recently hired a new waitress who is excellent. It's fairly apparent she's had some sort of hotel management training, perhaps in China, because she's particular about the details and service. Generally uncharacteristic of Chinese servers unless they've made a career choice of it. I know this is a terrible generalization but when you go to Richmond, especially for Dim Sum, you'll understand.

It's a couple who own the restaurant. The wife can usually be found at the front taking care of the money and the take away orders. The husband takes care of all the delivery. The husband is probably one of the most shy and genuine men you'll likely ever meet.

On my continuing quest for GB that comes close to the late, Great Wok I went here today for lunch to try their Ginger beef.  The dining room decor is what you'd expect; hand written signs, the pink tablecloths, black laquer chairs, but clean and uncluttered. My co-worker and I both ordered the House platter wnich comes with ginger beef, cup of wonton soup with 2 wontons, green salad, white rice, and green tea.  Wontons were tasty, broth average. The mains arrived with plates heaped high with GB, rice, and salad. The GB was a step in the right direction with a semi-crunchy shell and nice tangy sauce , yummy, but not quite there.... maybe I've got this Great Wok GB on a pedestal!

I'd give 5 stars for value (lunch for 2 for $20 tax/tip in) , 4 for flavor, 4 for service

    I feel i should clarify... it's:
As good as it gets... around Point Grey!

Even though i work around here, i used to refuse to go in because i never believed in the Chinese places outside of Richmond.  Was i ever wrong.

Ever since my co-worker bought me to this place a year ago, I've been going back there for lunch at least once a week, and sometimes even 3-4 times a week (yes i'm that hooked).

The food is very good and the price is absolutely amazing.  If you get the daily specials it's only $6 before tax and tip.  Even if you order off the menu is $8 before tax and tip.

My fav dish from this place: Ginger Beef...
[the reason why i go back every week, i need my fix!]

Delicious food!!!! My boss ordered dinner from here for all of us and everything was really tasty.  I don't imagine it was too expensive and it's super close to UBC which is a plus (for us)!  My favourites were ginger beef, sweet and sour prawns, egg rolls, chow mein noodles...

I will have to update my review to make it more useful when I order from there myself.

Superb Szechuan dishes at very reasonable prices. We especially liked the Singapore Noodles and the Beef in Black Bean Sauce.

The house special ginger beef must be one of the best dishes in the city-Perfectly crispy and sweet. Other personal favs are salt and peppery cod, spring rolls, and all of their noodle dishes. This place is a gem.

This review is pretty much just for the wonton with red pepper and peanut sauce...it's awesome!!! I also had the dai ching chicken and the eggplant, which were tasty...but the wonton reigns supreme.
