Review from Jennifer M.
London, ON
A new eatery in downtown London always tends to get my attention and this one was no exception, especially as I often walked by it on my way home from work. The location is a bit off the beaten path (aka Richmond Row or King St), but close enough to JLC and some offices to drum up pre-event and express lunch dining guests.
Why is it called Gigs? Well, live music naturally. Unfortunately, my friend & I discovered that could mean "matinee" performances that start before 5pm. What, why? If I wanted live music, I'd go to a bar. The dude was performing acoustic over a very loud sound system, which is an oxymoron, right? Well, it was near impossible to hold a conversation. Luckily, my friend & I were nearing the end of our meal when this "entertainment" began.
As for the food, meh...nothing special. I ordered chicken nachos and my friend had a club house sandwich (something offered only on the express lunch menu...but we were given them at 3:30...??). I had difficulty finding something I really wanted and was debating on two dishes (grilled cheese w/seafood sammich vs nachos) when I got the server's opinion. I went with the more substantial nacho plate and spent my meal picking off the black olives and jalapenos because I had no idea those were the toppings...with a few tomato pieces throw on almost as an after thought. What about the peppers? Meh. My friend's sandwich looked much better and she said it was about average in taste. At least it had shaved chicken not deli meat, she said. Indeed.
Another odd thing that happened was our server asked if we could settle our bill with her as she was ending her shift. This was even before we had a chance to sample the food. Hm. I'm too easy going and ended up tipping more than I would've had the bill come later. Smart server, really. Heh. Her relief seemed quite put out that she had done this, though as he was more attentive to our table as we were finishing up. I did leave him a wee tip, just for that reason.
This is definitely *not* my "must go" spot in downtown London, but the pickings are slim -- for the casual/pub grub stuff, at least. I don't really want to become a restaurant snob, dammit.
