In the end this place is a great find. They replaced the shank on an engagement ring, resized a cameo ring and replaced two posts on a pair of earrings for a couple of hundred bucks - most of it was the pricey gold needed for the shank replacement.
This is definitely a place to get jewellery maintained by a local shop in downtown.

So far I have only been into this establishment to drop off some things to be resized and repaired. On entering one notices the smell of cigarette smoke and that the people behind the counter are wearing jackets - because it is cold. Clue - this is not an upscale, sit your arse down on velvety seats kind of place.
The reason I give it 3 stars is because of the can do attitude to what I thought would surely be a 1/2 hour discussion, including hemms and hawhs, about nope can't do that, gotta send that piece away, maybe it can be rebuilt. Instead, it was a short 5 minute exchange of, yup, that's no problem, sure!
Stay tuned for the update when the work comes back. If the result is anywhere half decent, then this place will definitely gain another star or two.
