It isn't often that a shoe store can be packed to the gills on a Sunday afternoon and still provide attentive service. But the folks at Get Outside were impressively attentive both of the times I've been there, even though there have been what seemed like a bajillion people inside poring over the large selection of Toms, Hunter, Birkenstock, and Frye boots. Lots of other brands popular with the hipster kids these days. (Moccasins, seriously?). Prices are typical retail, so you're not necessarily going to find a hot deal here. It's all about the selection. Highly recommended, though. I know my feet are going to be quite pretty this summer thanks to my new kicks from Getoutside. :)

    LOVE this store.

They sell a wide range of Frye boots, but they also sell a decent range of Birkenstocks (took my mom here to buy a couple of pairs).

I also picked up some BIrkenstock insoles (well worth the $40), and the service was outstanding once you got a sales clerk to help you out.

The only problem is flagging down a sales clerk. They seem keen on avoiding you, and your blazing eye contact. I don't enjoy shopping here as much as I do in other stores, but if you get a good person, it's golden.

If not.... you might as well feel like you're the pink suede elephant in the room no one wants to talk to.

Still, BIRKENSTOCK INSOLES! :) (I must note that they didn't have enough stock either, so that was a mild WTF moment. You're a STORE. Stock up!)

    F*CK YEAH, shoe shopping!

This is probably my favourite shoe store along the Queen West Strip (loads of shoe stores here).

Getoutside occupies two separate retail spots right next to each other, giving you two rooms of shoe heaven. They have a very huge selection of inventory but they do not stock dress shoes or heels. Mostly casual stuff.

Everything is organized by brand, with each brand getting it's own shelving area. Vans, Converse, Keds, Hunter Rainboots, lots of tree-hugger type shite at the back too.

It's always packed. They do have a lot of staff. I experienced very good customer service there after 3 different visits this week trying to decide on which pair of Keds I needed/wanted the most.

I ordered online on the 16th of October. One week later, I called and left a message as I had not received shipping confirmation. I also emailed twice, with no reply. Finally, two weeks later I got a live person on the phone (after calling twice right beforehand, only to receive a message). Then they told me they sold of the boot I wanted AFTER I had placed my order. On top of that, they claimed they contacted me right away. There was nothing in my spam filter and there were certainly no phone messages left after my phone calls.

If I had not insisted on contacting them, they would have happily kept my money without delivering product.

Bottom line: poor customer service and dishonesty. AVOID.

Getoutside gets 4 stars for their great selection of boots... But I give them a MINUS 20 for their terrible service.

I'm a shopper, so I know good customer service when I see it.. It sure wasn't here. There was a black woman who totally ignored me when I asked her about the Hunter Gloss Rain boots.. Sure they're not $500 but they aren't cheap either so a little customer service would be nice.

THEN she asks some guy to get me my size.. he was equally as warm as she was - TERRIBLE! Perhaps because of the cold weather their face muscles froze since they couldn't even crack a smile.

Whatever, I bought the boots.. BUT if you expect people to be nice while you spend your hard earned money at their store - this isn't the store location.

A dying breed, especially on this stretch of Queen St, Get Outside is not one of those giant mall franchise stores buying up store space.  Get Outside has been around for years and doesn't look like it's about to leave.

The store is almost never empty, and a lot of that is because of the friendly staff.  The people selling these shoes are quick to show you options and get your sizes to try.  Then, they usually leave you alone while you try on shoes and feel them out.  It's a nice, no-pressure environment.  That said, the staff does seem to turn over fairly quickly.

It's also important to put that every growing and ever annoying "hipster" label on this store.  Hipster isn't necessarily a bad thing, and don't let that tag turn you away from checking this store out if you're into those styles of shoe.  However, this is undeniably a hipster joint.

Getoutside has the shoes I cannot find elsewhere.  THAT is amazing.

In Boston I had a girlfriend who had the most adorable pair of shoes.  Since I didn't ask the brand, I didn't know what to look for - I spent HOURS on zappos - HOURS.  I could not find those bloody shoes for about 6-8 months.

Then, on a particularly bad day last summer I strolled in with a girlfriend and there they were! (Doin' the happy dance)  It was a happy happy shoe day.  Shoes = Happiness.

They also have the most extensive collection of Frye boots that I have personally seen in the city.  Sometimes I like to go in there and hug them (the boots, not the staff) just for fun.  I also picked up a pair of Birk flip flops here this summer since they had practically every style.

One star off because it seems like they never have a shoe sale in this darned place.

My sister is obsessed with this store and she has good reason to.  This shoe store carries a variety of shoes that can not be easily found anywhere else.  Granted, the store is pretty much, full of mocassins, fryes, hunters, chucks, havianas, vans, and not much else.  Still for each brand, they sure carry a lot of variety.

The service was friendly and the prices were decent (never seen or heard of a sale here).   The only reason I wouldn't return is to stop myself from buying excessive amounts of shoes.

Note:  Apparently there is an online store. I checked it out and was disappointed in the site quality and ease of use.  Getoutside, please upgrade your site and make it better!

Hands down, best selection in the city.

If you can walk out of this store without seeing a pair of shoes you like, you either have terrible taste or no feet.

The staff suck. They couldn't care less about who comes through the doors and you often have to interrupt their involved conversations with one another to get help.

The prices might be higher than other shops by a few bucks. But overall, I find they have an amazing choice between high and low cost shoes. Tons under $100. Tons over $100.

But again, the selection is tops. Staff aside, I think at least half the shoes I own have come from Get Outside. Maybe more. They are always my first stop when looking for shoes.

Recently ordered from this shop and was super impressed with the speed of shipping, plus- my shoes fit great!

Wanted to pick up a pair of Birkenstock sandals (they make them in non-old man styles now) for an upcoming trip and was pumped to see that they carry all the styles in both 'regular' and 'narrow' fit. Not all of us have freakishly wide feet! Pretty excited not to have to suffer through agonizing side foot blistering while I break these puppies in...

Also grabbed a pair of Onitsuka Tigers by Asics which couldn't fit any better! It's hard finding funky lace up shoes that don't look like gym wear or have absolutely no water proofing.

Overall, very excited with my purchases and will definitely order from getoutside again.

I remember when this store was just one store and not two stores fused into one.  The original Getoutside is on the right-hand side and still houses the coolest of cool shoes.

Ladies, you won't find heeled things here but you will find a great selection of Converse ($60), Hunters ($100), and other sensible shoes.  Moccasins seem to be all the rage as well and so really, these shoes will allow you to "get outside" as their name suggests.

Boys can find the same selection of Converse ,Vans, Frye and even Fred Perry!  The left-hand side of the store seems to sell cheaper but trendy wellies along with a not-so-great selection of clothing for women.  They also have shoes for kids so kids can be cool too.

In 2002 I purchased my Favourite Pair Of Shoes Ever™ at Getoutside, but I've worn them so often that the brand name is completely rubbed out. They're black leather with a beige rubber sole, sort of like Asian ballet slippers with laces, and I've never been able to find a similar pair since. Getoutside no longer stocks shoes even remotely similar to this style - they've since been replaced by an obscene number of Vans, Converse high tops, Clarks and Hunter rain boots. I wish they still sold these shoes because I would buy 10 more pairs - most comfortable shoes ever.

The website describes their staff as "friendly and energetic" - I wouldn't call them UNfriendly or lazy, but I would never describe them as the former. They're just standard shoe store employees. More often than not you have to approach them for help because they're busy talking to each other instead of observing their clientele.

If you're looking for a pair of trendy, modern style shoes I'd recommend hitting up Getoutside and Groovy, both on Queen Street east of Spadina.

Getoutside shoes is an awesome store! The Queen Street located is their original location (they recently opened a bigger store on Yonge Street, South of the 401).  They have a lot of cool, different shoes - shoes that you won't be able to find at your local mall.  From Converse, Puma, Ben Shurman, to Tretorn and everything in between. I bought a hard to find pair of Tretorn rainboots there.

They have a pretty good supply of Converse (chuckies) as well as an ample supply of rainboots. There's a few shoe stores along the south side of Queen, so I'd hit those up as well (this one being one of the last two before you hit Spadina - if you're heading west bound).

You can shop online and there's free shipping within Canada, so it's good to take advantage of that - if you don't mind waiting for your shoes.

As a firm believer in comfort, sneakers remain a large part of my wardrobe, and Get Outside has the most thorough collection of the fun and colourful shoes requisite for my urban wandering lifestyle.

[winking, pointing at strangers, running hand through hair, youknowwhati'msayin']

You're not going to get your clunky running shoe here -- it's all about hip fashion, though it may sometimes lag a bit behind what's cool in other cities. However, as far as I'm concerned, Get Outside has a clear understanding of the hipster's Ten Commandments. Somewhere around number 5 or 6, it reads, "Thou shalt own at least one pair of Chuck Taylors or Vans in thy wardrobe."

    Done and done.

I've bumped up my review to five stars because it was a one-stop shopping heaven for winter boots for my boyfriend in the middle of a snowstorm. The girl helping us was GREAT, and she even humored me when I wanted to try on all the sale moccasins (which I still want to go buy...hmmm...).

Plus their website is SO useful -- take a look online before going in the store and you'll have an accurate idea of what to expect. I'm going to say this place is my favourite shoe store in the city? Yeah. It's the one.

I totally agree with Lynda's review - it is an awesome shoe store.

But I have to say, for any Birkenstock lover, they have a GIGANTIC collection of these bad boys. Every type of style, colour, number of straps - you name it, they've got it. Plus, they recently took over the store next door to them and expanded their space. They now sell clothing but their main focus is certainly on shoes.

They have a crazy selection of Converse, Puma, Adidas and a ton of other crazy brands and styles that I've never seen before. I bought my brother a beautiful pair of Ben Sherman's for his birthday (they even gave me a discount because I bought the display pair!) The sales people are super friendly and very attentive. This is a great shoe store and a great place to get awesome and unique kicks!

A popular stop for shoe shoppers on the Queen West strip, Get Outside offers many high-quality brands at relatively reasonable prices.  Pick up a pair of Birkenstocks or splurge on a pair of Frye boots (a celebrity favourite as of late).  While the staff do have a bit of the "Toronto" 'tude, they are also no-nonsense when it comes down to it, and will honestly recommend or discourage purchases based on personal experience.

I will admit that I am not a girl and as a member of the less fair sex I do not have an un-natural obsession with shoes.  I do like them and when it comes to buying things I wear, shoes are probably my favorite thing to buy.  Get Out Side is a very good shoe store, they have a good selection and enough staff to help a basketball team should they all wander in at once.  The one thing I didn't really like about Get Out Side is that I had trouble telling the men's shoes from the women's.  This shouldn't be as big of a problem as it was because usually women's shoes are clearly not made for men, but as this was a sporting sort of shoes store the lines were vague.  I am a man who is confident in my gender and my sexuality; but that doesn't mean that I want to find a shoe and start to really like it and then realize that we really weren't made for each other.  All I can suggest to the proprietors of Get Out Side is that a sign would be very helpful. Despite the gender ambiguity of the store, I would recommend it because they do have a good selection and the store is nice and airy and has managed to avoid the arrogance that can often come with a Queen West address.

Great shoes, great selection and if you're a patient person you can even grab the odd sale sometimes on your favourite brands.  I find I'm rarely quick enough to get there so my size sells out quickly.  It's a popular store so you have to keep visiting the website or sign up to get emails from them to monitor when the sales start.
