Review from Sarah O.
I've never stepped foot inside a vitamin/supplement store until recently, when someone suggested it was my lack of protein intake that was making me wake up feeling like I got hit by a truck every morning. And it totally makes sense- I'm vegetarian and don't eat much tofu, soy or nuts, I run about 10 miles everyday, I'm training in Muay Thai, and sometimes I tend to push a little too hard because I like the challenge. With that much stress on my body, I know I have to really be on the ball nutrition-wise, but I just refuse to drink protein shakes. I know that's sort of an ignorant state of mind but.. I'm not much of a supplement kind of person. I don't even take advil, for example. Or any other forms of "medicine." And I don't really care about they way my body looks as much as how well it can perform. But I'm getting older, my overall health isn't as forgiving, and I think I should cut myself some slack and get some assistance, considering I just about run about a marathon on the regular.
Alas, I went into GNC, the forefront of all things nutrition, trying to be open-minded and explore my options. The girl working was, first of all, dressed like she was going to a club. She had full-on nighttime make up, off-the-shoulder skimpy see through shirt, hair curled up, fake lashes, talking on the phone to her girlfriend about what they did last night. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. I went over and asked her about protein powders. She just directed me to the big tub of generic GNC brand. I asked her if there was a different protein recommended for each gender. She said, "Umm.. I don't think so," very unconvincingly. Then I asked her a few more elementary questions to which she had no idea about. Come on, I'm inquiring about protein, not some obscure magic powder. You should AT LEAST know about it working at GNC.
Then a lady came in asking where so-and-so was. The girl said, almost immediately, "We don't have it." The lady said, "I'm sure you have it. It's very popular and everyone carries it" The girl said, "I've never heard of it". The lady further affirmed her request by saying, "I've bought it here before!" That's when the girl finally started walking around trying to "look" for it. I understood then that she probably did this to every customer, just to shoo them away.
I ended up buying a couple single-packet multivitamins to try out. Apparently you need to pay $10 to join their Gold Membership that gives you a discount on the retail price. She tried to convince me saying, "If you purchase a membership, you will be saving $0.75 with your purchase today." I said fine, whatever. As she was ringing me up, I was doing the math in my head and her calculations were totally off. Way off. Why am I not surprised - she probably doesn't even know where her earlobes are.
I really don't appreciate people like this working at such specialized stores. People come here for professional advice and guidance for their health. People like me come here to be convinced to take more supplements. It honestly wouldn't be that hard to do at this point, if the worker was knowledgable enough. How in the world did this girl get a job here? Are there no kind of training involved in the hiring process? One extra star because I'll give the benefit of the doubt that GNC carries useful stuff to SOME people.
