Gene's ginger hot chocolate is the bomb diggity. Sip on a cuppa that, bring your laptop, book, notes, buddies, and spend a solid few hours hanging out. This is well worth the visit to prop down and study or work.

The decor is minimalist, and the tables are long and sort of communal. There are windows that seem to wrap around 2/3 walls of the triangular-shaped space, that means tons of natural light even on grey days!

Definitely check out the vegan brownies, so dense and delicious!

ive visited this place several times...coffee is decent enough, but man oh man..come on guys! what kind on an attitude problem do the Staff have? i come from london, england where the serving staff in the retail business are legendary for being stuck-up and with their heads up in the clouds, or sometimes just downright ignorant...but at Gene....well, i have to say that this place takes the pee!

so what if youre situated in a hip place...so what if youve got arty-farty hipster types flocking into your place....thats no excuse for behaving so badly with your customers...after all, if theyre not there...your business would close...simple!

ok..thats my rant over! now..about the place itself...man, oh man...please close down your business and let me rent it out....its one helluva place and i know for sure...as sure as the sun rises every morning, that if i took it over...i would have people lining up to get in, way down both kingsway and main streets!! no joking!

I'm always so on the fence with Gene.

It's a BEAUTIFUL space, I wish they'd managed to keep the Bocci light they had up for a while last year (the green one) - it added some great ambience to the space when the sun wasn't shining.
I think their collection of geraniums is super cute and it's hilarious that they have to keep reminding people NOT TO WATER THEM.
They grew some veg outside last summer I think - that was pretty cool.
Gene's got a great ginger hot chocolate - they even have almond milk!  I wish they'd bring in some more muffins or something..

Here's the thing though - oh my goodness, SMILE!  also, I dunno, maaaybe be a bit speedier? Or say hi or something when you serve me?

It's why I don't really stop in other then to see some pals that I spot through the window.  I just don't really feel welcome there too often.

This Spring I think I might spend some more time in Gene, maybe it needs another chance and I just need an excuse to sit in the window, bathing in sunlight.

This is the best mocha in Vancouver. It's dark like my soul, and thats the way I like it! Seriously though, lovingly equipped with minimalist reclaimed ambiance, cool staff that'll shoot you a warm smile here and there and some of the best coffee in the city. Like the Clockwork Orange Korova Milk with a bit more zip.

Yeah yeah yeah, has anyone mentioned the hipster-y atmosphere? It doesn't actually make me FEEL uncomfortable and what were you expecting on Main and 8th?!

Espresso drinks are nothing spectacular, but not bad by any means. Just ok.

The space itself is gorgeous. Lots of seating in a little space. Tons of light. Lots of outlets for laptops. Good music.

I hummed and haw-ed on adding a 4th star because I actually really liked the to the point, no-small-talk service.

Very simple place but with a fun twist. Like the way they put it on the corner with windows showing both streets on either side.

    The barista was very sweet.

I only ordered a black coffee because that's all I wanted, but it was really delicious. It has to be if it is to be consumed straight. Good spot!

Gene, can I come live in you?

With tons of light pouring in from every angle, Gene's exposed beams, white walls, and mountain glimpses make for my kind of inspiration space. So long as I'm not in any serious hurry, Gene is a great space to plug my headphones in and work a few hours away. Sitting alone in this bright and clean room makes for the perfect creative environment while I down a (couple of) delicious Americano(s). The Americano, by the way, is where it's at when ordering at Gene. Smooth, rich, and strong, this bad boy keeps me alert for hours.

While I can't necessarily live in Gene, I can at least visit every once in awhile. Well worth it, I'd say.

How the hell does it take five entire minutes to grab my money and make a bloody mediocre hot chocolate when nobody else is around?

Slap a smile on and pull your head out of your bottom. I know it's a dreary existence, being a hipster and such, but don't sprinkle your drinks with malaise. Everyone who works here and visits here always looks downright depressed.

On my birthday, my brother and I were on our way downtown, and happened to be stopped at the light right next to Gene, so we rolled down the windows and cranked up the volume, dancing in the car to Lady GaGa, giving a taste of genuine cheer to the somber ghosts sitting outside.

I'd just emerged from the Mount Pleasant library, in need of a quick coffee fix. Gene was directly opposite, so over I went! It's possibly the brightest cafe I've ever been in! Would be great for reading and drawing in :) Also the view down Main to the mountains is great; don't think I'll ever tire of looking at them.

I approached the counter, and the guy who'd been standing behind hurriedly ran to the side, sat down, and started browsing on his laptop. I wasn't quite sure if he worked there or not!  He was doing his best to ignore me, but after enough of a glare, he looked up and said, "Someone will be along soon." Another minute, and a friendly smiley lady came out, and made me the strongest latte I've ever had in my life *head explodes* ;D  Very bitter too, not quite what I was after, but not bad either.

Turns out the guy did work there, and was just being a weirdo :S

    What the!?!?!
Sunday morning, 9am. I walked into this place and was first of all shocked by it's ghetto-ness (i.e., fake teeth hanging from the door, i can do without. It's not cool or eclectic, it's just stupid). And i love me some ghetto, but this place needs some work. It also needs some heat. I swear it was warmer outside. But we were going to get coffees to go so no biggie...

Except for the 'barrista' or whatever who was clearly challenged this morning by life in general, and specifically by orders of coffee and croissant. I have never seen someone struggle so much to get a croissant off of some wax paper. Wow. It was like performance art. Only problem was...uh, we all kinda wanted coffee and this guy really could not deal with multitasking.

So my friend ordered a  mocha, he took the order by pressing about 20 buttons on the computer screen. Then when I said i wanted an americano and it would be on the same bill, you would have thought I just told him I ate his cat Fluffly for breakfast. He then, seemingly distraught, proceeded to press another 30 buttons on the screen and told my friend the total was 9$!!!! WHAT THE!?!?!? Uh, dude. No.
He then, sighed and, you guessed it, pressed another 20 buttons on teh screen, did not tell us the total and just gave us some change. Good lord.

Oh and now it's coffee making time! At this point, there was a line up of about 5 people. Oh and did I mention the other staff person who was walking around putting baked goods out and turning on the music...again, what the!?!?! Help the dude out!!!
    *head desk*

Ten minutes later (no joke) we got our coffees. Pretty decent and what warranted the 2 stars.

But I can tell you, I won't go back if I can help it. I don't care how hipster you are this was piss poor service.

Awesome little local coffee shop. Yes the staff and the regulars are a bit eccentric, but so what, it adds to the character of the place. If you want a sterile joint go to Tim Hortons down the road.  The most important thing here is the great coffee they make. They also do really good muffins. Just don't be in a rush, this is not a nip in, grab a coffee and run out kinda place.

You know what, I don't like Gene. And that is a shame, because it's in my neighbourhood and occupies a great piece of real estate. I wish I did like it there! But the atmosphere is just so damn oppressive. This is a joint for pretentious hipster art types, and it shows - it's uncomfortably quiet, and the only thing I feel when I go in there is "uncool". And I'm kind of a hipster myself.

Also, I've heard great reviews about the coffee, but the two or three times I've gotten some there it's tasted bitter or burnt.

It's great that they offer both soy and almond milk - and I remember that they used to also offer hemp and rice milk, though this is no longer the case. Unfortunately this is just not the type of place for someone like me. I feel like I'm making people uncomfortable if I have a conversation at normal volume. I just feel... watched. Maybe it's because it's basically a fishbowl.

Three stars because I understand how this place is great for some other people. I have plenty of friends who I like despite their pretentious attitudes, and they seem to like Gene, so whatever.

so i don't start off on a negative note, here are the two positives that earned  them the two stars.
1.) great location!! this place is soo beautiful.
2.) offering almond milk.  it's my favourite, so i'm happy to find it.

NOW, the rant on why i'll never go back!

i waited at the counter for nearly two minutes as the two servers buzzed back and forth by me without acknowledgement.  dudes, i have been in customer service for 10+ years.  if you're too busy to help me, say hey and let me know you'll be with me in a second!  i'm patient, but i hate being ignored.

the server who finally helped me didn't even tell me the total for my order.  i told him what i wanted, he turned away and started talking to someone else, and held out his hand toward me for money!! give me a break, that is just plain rude.

i ordered my latte with caramel flavouring and it didn't taste as though any had been added at all, but i didn't feel like being that person and complaining.  my latte was quite tasty otherwise--but my friend ordered the same drink as mine and hers tasted burned and similarly without the flavouring she asked for.

not to mention, they didn't call out any drinks, which is kind of annoying--when two similar drinks get placed on the counter simultaneously, it's nice to not have to hassle someone to find out which is which.

all in all, this place is not worth a re-visit

In a town with quite a few coffee shops that take their brew seriously, I can't really justify getting an attitude from a barista for the privilege of purchasing a high priced Americano.  So that is why the low marks for Gene.  Yes, they make a good cup of coffee.  But the service here is
sub-par and downright unpleasant at times.  The last time I went in there, I found myself wishing I had just walked the extra block up Main Street to Cuppa Joe or Kafka.

Excellent, excellent espresso drinks, some of the best in Vancouver, and wonderul croissants, both plain and chocolate. If you go mid-morning, you may be lucky enough to get a warm one... OMG, so good!

Yes, it's known for it's lacklustre service, but since the service, IMO, isn't downright bad, I'm fine with it. I've been there enough times to know what the baristas are like. For example, if you're the next person in line and they're making a drink and you're just standing there waiting, they won't say "I'll be right with you" or acknowledge you in any way until they are ready to actually serve you. However, the usual guy (he must own it?) remembers what my drink is, which I apreciate, even if he doesn't engage in conversation.

It's a total hipster hangout, which sometimes gets on my nerves, but I'm there for the coffee after all, so I let it go. It's a tiny space, with an unfinished look, and they seem to keep rearranging the interior. On nice days you can also sit outside and stare at the Lions way off in the distance or watch the hipsters pretending that they aren't trying desperately to be cool. ;)

I absolutely adore this place. The place itself that is. The way the building is shaped, the abundance of windows, the art, even the way it's been decorated in a purposefully "I didn't think about decorating too hard" manner.

That's sadly where my adoration stops though. I have yet to get a decent cup of anything here. And the people working behind the counter always seem really snobby, and way too into catching up on gossip from the weekend to actually pay attention to the customers.

For some strange reason though I continue to go back. So maybe the blame actually falls on me. I just want so much to like this place, maybe one really good experience here will change my view for the better.

    Here's hoping...

As part of the gentrification (i.e. cannot fit into a pair Cheap Mondays and without a creative slacker job) of my neighbourhood, Gene is cooler than I am.  Better looks (i.e. clientele), better address and better culinary skills.

The coffee here has been rated some of the best in the city and it is in fact so good, that they would be popular even if it was just a cart on a nondescript corner. Coffee is strong and traditional - half caf, 2 pump princesses be warned.

I love that this is a great place to sit (if you can get a seat) and people watch. And I don't find the service to be snotty, quiet but nice actually, but the crowd can be. The great thing is, they are too cool to stare for long.

I love the breakfast wrap; what a concept to actually make a breakfast wrap that tastes like real food (Starbucks...I am talking to you) and they also have this yummy apple filled pastry that is worth the calories.

But I really love Gene because it meets my great cafe standard: a comfortable, good looking place with its own personality where you actually want to sit for a couple of hours. And it is within tripping distance of home. And I get lazy.

you know that scene in wayne's world where wayne and garth get mysteriously pushed out by an invisible force while eerie music plays because they don't fit in? welcome to gene.

jammed full with androgynous hipsters dressed like homeless people who've walked their fixies up the hill (only to ride back down with no helmet afterwards) you might have to stand to drink your coffee, but that's actually not such a bad thing because it's just one less step to getting the heck out the damned door.

oh and the service is bloody terrible. you make coffee. i do whatever i do. we're people. get over yourself. the only reasonable explanation for the staff's behaviour is if perhaps as a condition of employment one must ensconce a carrot firmly up one's rectum prior to each shift.

and the coffee, yes it's fine, but it's coffee, and guess what? in vancouver, there's lots of good coffee, so i'll get mine elsewhere. i go to the community centre right across the street from this place, so it would be convenient, but it's just not worth it.

and the decor is awful. how is it that the place looks so terrible when i'm pretty sure every staff and regular customer has gone or is going to emily carr?

and it's effing freezing. get some heat.

A raw space with lots of light. If a coffee shop could embody a home it would be a studio space/loft with lots of light, exposed beams, some brick and lots of metal. I think a sculptor or painter would live here.

The Americano I ordered went down fast and smooth. I probably should've had my own to go mug...felt a little bad for asking for a disposable...and I wish they had raw sugar (not brown sugar)... But regardless, an hour later -- I was bouncing off the walls -- Yowser! that's some strong brew-tastical beans Gene's got!

    Oh Gene.

This cafe is definitely not tucked any in any inconspicuous corner. It's very conspicuous standing loud and proud on the corner of Kingsway and Main Street.

And they certainly have a good reason to be standing loud and proud: THE COFFEE! Oh the coffee! So smooth and velvety, and yet powerful enough to fuel you for the day...

And the ambiance = beautiful and unique! With windows on both sides showering in an abundance of natural light, you almost feel like you're sitting outside (minus the rain) when you're enjoying a cup of coffee here.

What?! They're STILL renovating? This has got to be one of those do-it-you-self jobs.
The "renovating" does not stop people from being pulled into Gene like magnet to metal. It's the coffee. It's certainly NOT for the personality of the proprietor (eek) I wish she would at least pretend she knew how to smile. Well, maybe it's the endless "renovating" going on around her that makes her so cheery. NOT.
But the Coffee ! the Coffee! man it's SO good.

Gene became my new favourite place for coffee last summer. The quality of their espresso is about the best I've had outside Italy and the informal atmosphere is great when I bring the kids along. It would have got a 5 except for the recent changes in layout that they made a few weeks back.
They have expanded the counter area parallel with Kingsway so that it takes up about half of the already cramped space. They also seem to have raised it above the floor of the public area by about six inches which means the staff have to really lean over the top to serve you. I don't know what they were hoping to achieve, but I hope they don't think they've got it right.

You could sum up Gene by something I saw stuck to the espresso machine a few weeks ago. It was a Westender review of Artigiano's off Robson being the Best Coffee in the City. Underneath the staff wrote, "yeah right buddy".

This place is not an Earls' chain dressed up like Italy for people who've never been to Italy. There is not 14 staff ensuring you are out the door in 4.8 seconds. It's not coffee run through a dirty sock full of feces and called a double Americano.

I wouldn't suggest going to Gene if you are in a hurry. Most people who live around there and go there consistently know other customers so having a minute to chat is a bonus not a drag. I don't go for coffee to power through the next 12 hours of meetings, I go to relax.

If you need "How can I help you?" service, this may not be the place for you. People are working, the machines take a while as they are making one of the best Americano's in the city. I am reminded I am not the center of the universe. Someone else said it earlier, "it's just coffee". Is it realistic for everyone to be so ecstatic to see you?

I stress the service issue because I respect honesty and have a low tolerance for bullshit. They are being themselves. I'm not always in the mood to pretend the world is perfect either. I personally get more vibe and judgment at The Diamond in Gastown or Slickety Jim's (also slow, slow service).

I suppose I should point out that half of you reading this waved glow sticks around at raves and have had at least three stupid haircuts or bad wardrobe decisions in your life. C'mon, you remember. So using the word hipster like it's the new N word may not be fair. Most of the reviews here that go on and on about hipsters feel more judgemental than anything I experienced there.

And for the record, Anita (the "high waisted pleated pants girl" with the "death stare") is not the owner and quite lovely once you say hello from time to time.

Excellent location, beautiful architecture, well designed, lots of natural light, able to sit inside or outside on two sides of the triangular building - either on a slab of concrete or tables and chairs.

Gene makes a delicious Americano, very smooth. Great service, interesting & creative owners with great fashion sense.

It's easy to spend hours here whether hanging out with friends, or hanging out with a laptop or a book or your latest creative endeavour.

I don't really know what to make of this place.  Yes its good for people watching but to be honest the crowd was really intimidating and I felt like I I really stuck out like a sore thumb amongst all the funky dressed artsy people tapping away on their macbooks.  It just wasn't what i expected; the place was a bit shabby (they use the same chairs I had in elementary school), the drip coffee was nothing special, the service was so-so.  You should just go check the place out for yourself, the location and the building its in is very cool but I feel like you have to be an art student of some to mesh with the vibe and the crowd of Gene and appreciate the decor.

Wedged between Kingsway and Main is Gene, an architecturally funky café wrapped in windows and complete with high ceilings and very white walls. The interior's a little stark for me, and as soon as you enter you know you've come to a place that's aiming for chic and sleek, a style that doesn't often touch my heart but no doubt wins over many a minimalist.

I did enjoy their menu items however, especially this rare find: almond milk, banana, fig, and spice smoothie. Their coffee also rates a mention and I think this might be their pride and joy.

Gene also has wi-fi but when I came to settle in and do some work I had problems hooking up to the Internet. The owner himself came to help me and spent quite some time fiddling with my machine, but to no avail. I appreciated that he tried so hard to sort out my computer problems, but it was a shame I couldn't stick around after I finished my delicious smoothie. I would of liked to, as this place has are some great long wooden tables at which to perch where you can tap away and watch the Main Street action go by.

This place wins one bonus star for it's location and one star for it's great breakfast wrap. It loses points for snobby service, long line ups, and always being out of the breakfast wrap. I know it must suck sometimes to have an actual job, but really do the 2 people i have seen work there really never smile? It is kind of a shame since it is what i would say sums up what gives the 'hipsters' in my neighborhood a bad name. I will stick to my coffee shop 'Our Town' around the corner.

I just had the worst experience here today. a friend and i met for coffee with our well behaved two year old sons, and were basically asked to leave because people were working. the kids were not loud, they were well behaved but we got the death stare from the woman who i believe is a manager or owner (high waisted pleated pants girl) when i walked in with my two year old today.

with the new community centre open directly across the street you'd think they'd welcome the business. apparently not. to top it off the coffee wasn't great, and the lemon loaf was dry and tasted as if it was a week old. i give it no stars (but yelp forces you to pick one), two thumbs down, i will never return and have let my network of friends know about it. boo gene!

This place needs to learn that a cafe needs more than cool architecture and hip clientele. I've been here five times and the coffee is consistently off. I won't even mention the service. If you want a real coffee, go to Caffe Artigiano, 49th Parallel or the Elysian Room. Heck, the new My Chef across the street does a better Americano!

The corner of Kingsway and Main is sort of an East-meets-West in Vancouver. The long diagonal of Kingsway abruptly ends and presents you with the vista of downtown. At this vantage point, sits Gene. A unique triangular shop with a raw canvas of an interior, slightly art-school workshop and slightly industrial deconstructive. The coffee is great, although the menu is a bit messy. My americano was rich, and as well-made as some of my favourite places. However, the best part about this place is on the outside: The apparently pilfered "Tim Horton's Coming Soon" huge sign from up the street. Love it.

I'm only giving Gene two stars because they are so god damn slow and most of the employees act like you're wasting their time when ordering. Which sucks because the coffee is great. Just step up the customer service a touch and try and feign a 'thank you' and I'd go back. Until I hear otherwise, I'll be staying away from Gene.

I always dig having my espresso here at this trendy cool hip funky main st cafe... So worth the wait for that bold jolt..... The line up can be long at peak times but the laid back feel is peaceful while you wait... Plugging into wifi while sipping on my macchiato can easily cause an hour to slip away.

Gene is one of my favorite weekend indulgences. The quality of their coffee is the best I've found so far in Vancouver. Next to that, their vegan chocolate cake is as good as it gets as far as desert goes. The space is great both for catching up with friends, as well as for reading and getting work done. While there are about 100 coffee shops within a 5 block radius, this one is by far the best in terms of quality of menu items and atmosphere provided.

This little angular, odd shaped space serves an amazing cappuccino in the cutest charming little glass cups-almost like a water or wine glass looking glass.  The staff is friendly and hipster, very Mainesque, but professional and friendly.  The mix of people is eclectic, refreshing and cute.  The small tables and wooden bench type of seating is made better by a leather cushion backing that heals the most achy tuchases.   The free internet is well worth the price of a coffee.

Coffee shop nestled in the tip of a flatiron building, Gene is a pretty sweet place to grab a coffee and go, or sit in the window and people watch. Not good for hanging out a long time, because it's cramped and busy. It's also not so great for groups. But if you want to stop in for a sec and take a break, it's an awesome place to go.
