We first heard about Gen Sushi from our (most excellent) server at ZEN Sushi in West Vancouver when we asked her where she would recommend for a more reasonably priced raw fish night out.
We've since been back several times and have yet to be disappointed. The restaurant itself isn't very striking - they have two units side by side with a wall knocked out at the back to connect them and the decor is pretty dated/generic. But the food and the service are always excellent. Everyone is very friendly, our tea and water cups rarely go unfilled and the food is prompt and fresh.
As far as your basic budget sushi needs go, it's a good bet. -

As one of the few people in Vancouver who isn't overly fond of sushi, I rate the places based on the non-sushi options they might have. Gen Sushi has a good selection of things like gyoza, tempura and the like, but they're not that good. I enjoyed the kushiyaki - prawns and scallops on a stick - but mostly because I am a fanatical scallop lover. I had to ask twice for my items to come out, because they were forgotten - service was slow at times but friendly.
Portions are enormous though, so if you're starving and on a budget, Gen Sushi will fill your mouth hole. If you've got the time and money to be a little more choosy, there are better options. -

Great prices, delicious standard fare sushi. The perfect place to go if you're in the area and looking for decent cheap sushi, but not worth a special trip.
The non-sushi options were not particularly fantastic, which is why the three stars. Now I know it's a SUSHI place, but I always get a side of gyoza and I couldn't finish them as they were just not great, which is a negative for me. -

The food is pretty standard fair. Sushi chef's are not Japanese, so not quite the same. This place gets great reviews in the NS News, but I don't quite see it. The service is OK, the food is OK and the prices are OK. My biggest problem with Gen is the cleanliness - it's not. I've found hair in the Agadashi Tofu twice! That's just not good enough.
Should never do this, but I looked in the kitchen, and it just looks dirty. My wife's stomach never seems to agree. Maybe we are clean freaks! -

The food is not bad but prices are unreasonable, way too expensive. A wakame salad of size one bite is 5 dollars. Other places sell 10 times more for 4 bucks!!!
