Review from Al G.

I think this was an excellent sushi restaurant trying new combinations of fish, spices, and textures to create new types of sushi,
Although the shop is a little small, I like the atmosphere of it. Plenty of parking out front. BYOB although the green tea was very good also. -

Love Gen Sushi! What a great addition to the 'hood!
Miso soup is chock full of seaweed and bits of tofu. The fish is fresh, the rice is perfect, and the rolls are interesting. They are a bit slow for take-out, but it is totally worth the wait. Some standouts for me: Final 4, Tuna Lover's Roll, and Dynamite roll.
I will definitely be back and plan on being a regular! -
Review from Sereia C.
I really love this postage stamp-sized sushi joint. It's super cheap compared to most. I read the first review...which said it seats 20 people. Maybe I missed something when I blinked, but there are only 3 tables, so it's better for takeout.
My friend and I did score a table here though a few weeks ago. Generally, as you know...whenever you go to a sushi restaurant you don't expect the waitresses to have much to say beyond "you ready to order?" and "more tea?"...so here we were surprised to have such a knowledgeable waitress who made multiple recommendations of her fav's on the menu (like ahi tacos and dynamite shrimp, which are now our fav's as well). Another surprise were the tunes....not often you hear Eminem and Snoop busting out tunes as you're downing your edemame.
The sushi was really good, the restaurant was clean, and the service was fast.
Another surprise was the free pineapple with our bill. You always get an extra star in my book when you give me free stuff. Let that be a lesson to all.Listed in: Drop it like it's...Raw.

Review from Food Doc F.
Watertown, MA
A couple of us had take out from there a couple of more times this week... things are getting better, the food was ready when promised... Their two or three roll special seems to be a hit with our crowd. Our delivery person always mentions that there never seems to be anyone sitting at the tables or sushi bar, just take out, maybe it's different in the evening. None the less... Gen Sushi is on the lunch rotation Oishi Des!!!!!!

Rough and Ready, CA
Brand new organic sushi spot. I generally dont do sushi so today I got a cooked lunch entree.
The chicken teriyaki lunch is amazing. It came with rice, crab sushi, shumai, miso soup and green salad. It was a steal at $9. The teriyaki chicken is delicious and tender and highly recommended. The crab rolls were fresh. I also got an order of steamed meat gyoza which were........AWESOME. Will defintely be going back! -

I ate there on Friday night. Food was excellent with very fresh ingredients. The sushi dinner was filling and had a good variety of Negiri along with some spicy tuna rolls all with very fresh fish and a wonderful presentation. The udon with tempura was a very large portion of soup and udon, and the tempura vegetables were of good size slices and fried to perfection, a great dish for a rainy day. The staff was supper friendly with great service, and the sushi chef was very fun. The two negative points are: it was very small only a couple of tables and the sushi bar, and it did not serve alcohol (blame Belmont for that), all in all I am very happy to have it in my neighborhood!

Belmont, MA
We (two adults w/ two kids) decided to try this new local place. The decor was nice and warm even though there were only two tables of four and a table of two. We've had many black cod with miso through out the years, and the one from Gen Sushi was one of the best if not the best we've had. I usually order the chirashi from a sushi restaurant, and the one from Gen Sushi was excellent. Great variety of fish, i.e. uni, scallop, & even toro. You can tell the owners are still working out the logistics, but the delicious food easily overshadow the not yet perfectly smooth operation.

Believe the hype...the quality of sushi here is amazing, considering that from the outer appearance, it doesn't appear to be a "fancy" place. I had the sushi dinner, which was 10 fine pieces of nigiri with 6 smaller pieces of spicy tuna roll. I love the fact that ALL the nigiri were high-quality (no egg, shrimp, etc.), including 1 heavenly piece of toro. Very much worth the price. I hesitate to give it 5 stars (due to the tiny size of the place), but definitely will be going back. Great addition near Belmont center.

Went here for the first time last night. I would definitely go again. There are only three tables, and a sushi bar, but the selection was as big as any sushi place 10x the size. We had edamame, the shrimp and veggie tempura (really good!) and the sushi/sashimi sampler. The sashimi was incredibly fresh. Portions were generous and the staff was very friendly and attentive. Loved the complimentary carved pineapple section after our meal.

The sashimi was excellent. High quality fish, well made and well presented. All the appetizers and sides have been great over multiple visits. Small place. Good, friendly service.

Wow, a new sushi place serving some of the best sushi in the Boston area.I am hesitant to rave about this place cause you might be sitting in my seat the next time I try to get my sushi fix. Finally we have a local chef willing and able to raise the level of culinary nuance with sushi. Clearly the chef loves what he does cause he makes his own sauces which right off the top, differentiates him from 95% of all the other sushi restaurants in Boston or anywhere else for that matter. You really don't need to use soy sauce here as the the chef's preparation is really that good and flavors that delicate. The soy sauce will simply over-power the subtle flavors . They have only been open for 3 weeks, so the word is not out as to how awesome the food and the high quality of fish thats being served here. It's a tiny place, maybe seats 15 people but it's definitely a place where you will be coming back again and again for his signature dishes. The fish taco is an amazing mixture of spices and blue fin tuna. If I rave any more about the place, you might begin to think I work for Gen Sushi or I am related to the owners, not the case, just love great food and this friendly place has it all.

Great new sushi place. Food was great - I had the Yasai combo and my husband got the Sushi dinner. We enjoyed both. Service was spectacular - we got a free appetizer as we waited, green tea got topped off the minute it went low, they couldn't have been any nicer! We are definitely going back and taking our friends with us!

This place is a gem! My boyfriend and I came on Thursday night last week and it was empty except for a couple waiting for their take-out order. We ordered the fried shumai it was some of the best shumei I've ever had. We were sent a complimentary order of edamame which were fresh and hot. We ordered the two special rolls of the day in addition to the toro special. Before our order arrive, we were served complimentary oysters on the half shell. What! They weren't on the menu but it was soooo nice to have them. They were awesome. Our rolls and sushi were really good and I was getting full. We also tried uni for the first time ever. I wasn't a fan but my boyfriend liked it a lot. The sea urchins are from Cali and are apparently better than the ones in Maine. Lastly, we finished the meal with green tea fried ice cream which was brought to our table a la flambe'. That was a pleasant surprise. Overall a very good experience. I've been back one other time for take-out and they seemed busier. I think they've been open less than a month. I'm always concerned for these places in an area that is primarily residential (not to mention sleepy Belmont) but I think this place will do fine. I like it better than Genki-Ya. It's tiny so expect the seating to be cozy. The sushi chef is really friendly and remembered me when I picked up my take-out. The wait staff is attentive and friendly as well. I will be going back. Great place to have in my neighborhood!
