These guys are good. The wife usually handles the clients and appointments and the husband handles the repairs.
It's a side job for them but they are very diligent and have high craftsmanship.
I did have the YLOD for my PS3. Found these guys via Yelp. They unfortunately weren't able to fix the issue and said it was extremely rare to have this occur. Mike recovered my game and refunded my money. It was an "FML" moment for me but they were helpful and provided some good alternatives (parting it out, using hard drive, recommending the different types of slim models and why).
I would have no issues going back to them. They've earned my trust. -

I'm going to keep this review simple.
What everyone else is saying about the Kruegers is true - they are legit and some of the nicest people I've ever met....err....well, I never met Mark but he definitely did a great job fixing my PS3. But I would have to say that the 5 stars was definitely earned by Joanne. Not only did she explain everything but she was amazing at telling me the risks of fixing versus buying a new one. She truly had my best interests in mind.
Also, it was fun trying to help her pick out the new paint colors for her house.
As for my PS3, it works like new and I'm still under their 3-month warranty which I hope I won't have to use.
Mark, great job BUT most of my thanks goes to Joanne and her amazing customer service! -

I have to tell you place was great. I called afternoon got a call in evening. I set up to drop my stuff off via text ( thank you for being in the 21st century ). I went to the appointment and they took care of the problem explained exactly what they did let me test it there and were super friendly. Great people to work with and price is worth it.

Not sure what 'phone service' everyone keeps raving about. My fat PS3 recently broke down and won't read games or movies anymore so I thought I'd give GH a try. I called around noon today and received no pick up so I thought no problem, maybe they're on lunch so I left a voicemail about my problem. It's now about 5 hours since I left that message and I've nothing so far. I'll be keeping it at 1 star until I actually get some kind of sign that this place still exists. I'd prefer to hear about how their services work ahead of time over the phone rather than walking in to the place only to find out they don't meet my standards or something.
p.s. I also called them last Wednesday but forgot to leave a message. They should really set up their messaging service to ring 3 times rather than the 5-6 times it rang when I called them until you get to hear the part to leave your own message. yikes! -

Nice professional setup in a residential Garage. Great phone service, very flexible scheduling appointments.
My PS3 did the YLOD and they fixed it within hours.
* It's important to understand that the YLOD is a design flaw made worse by poor ventilation or other environmental factors. Once your system gets to that point it is permanently damaged.
The process performed here is perfect for reviving a ps3 so you can de-authorize it, get the data off and then have the logic board replaced by sony or buying a new ps3. It will never fix the PS3 to brand new condition, and if you take it home and shove it between the cable box and the wall, it will eventually fail again.
They did a great job, and I was able to transfer my data off the PS3 and transfer it to a new slim model.
They also fix other problems such as BluRay drive failures.
Give them a call!Comment from Mark K. of Geeky Hacks 3/25/2011

My 120GB PS Triple Slim had stopped reading Blu-Ray discs. It happened after finishing a match playing Modern Warfare 3(the best video game ever. Not Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis). It had over 480+ hours of 8+ hour marathon sessions of MW3 in 4 Months. Plus another 375+ hours of Black Ops in a year. I wasn't really surprised that the drive failed. After searching for online repair shops, I searched Yelp and found Geeky Hacks. I called Geeky Hacks inquiring about PS Triple Blu Ray drive service. I set-up a drop-off appointment with Joann that same day within the hour. Joann was very accommodating and knowledgeable of how the service works. Her husband Mark was the one doing the repairs. She told me that the Blu Ray diode will be replaced and it will take about a week to get it done. I'm not going to knock off a star because of that. I have seen more or less 15+ Phat PS3s on the table. I guessed I must be behind in the queue. It's better than sending it off to be repaired on one of those online repair shops. And I have a 60GB PS3 in the closet that kept me occupied during the time my PS3 Slim was out.
I got a text from Joann stating that my machine is ready for pickup. I replied with the time to pick it up. Joann had me tested the PS3 playing NBA 08 and after playing for a few minutes, I was satisfied that it works again. It cost me $90 for the service. Joann told me to put it through its paces and to call/text back within 48 hours if there are any issues (i.e. Mechanical). Now that my PS Triple is back, I'll be busy trying to get MOABs. -

EDIT....Originally 5 stars but now..I am with Blaise P.
They are a nice small shop and I love helping out a small business as the next guy, but I am not happy with the outcome. After paying them the $, I got my PS3 back within the week. I have the original 40g backwards compatible and got raped by the YLOD. After about a month it died on me again and I got the YLOD..again..I contacted Geeky Hacks and they serviced it free of charge (cool on that, sucks on the drive), within another month-ish I got the YLOD again (3rd time). I contacted him again about it...never heard from him again. Now my original PS3 is growing cobwebs in my closet.
If you're the lucky ones and this helps fixes it then by far do it, but as for the few people like myself...it was not the greatest. I put a lot of faith, but to no avail did it deliver. It was a risk and I took it, but wasn't the best solution.
If you're in need of a quick fix..this is the place and maybe it may fix your ps3 forever...but for a few of us..it was only for a month
Why the 1 star rating...well at least for the 3rd time I got the YLOD, after I emailed him, he could have at least emailed me back saying he cannot fix it instead of leaving me hanging..I emailed him a few weeks b4 Thanksgiving.. -

Came here with a friend to get his PS3 fixed. It's your typical small DIY workshop from a garage, however, this place never gave me a shady vibe like other places have given. The wife handles the appointments and logistics, while Mark is the actual repair guy.
From my experiences from dealing with DIY repair guys, Mark is probably the best one I have seen. While others have gained experience from trial and error, Mark actually has a background with this kind of stuff. That alone can tell you he's legit! He allowed us to stay while he diagnosed the problem, and was friendly throughout. We were probably there for a little more than an hour, but it went by so quickly due to the interesting stories that he told.
Once my friend's PS3 was fixed, we were told about the warranty, which is a definite plus. If you need to have your PS3 fixed, definitely come here to Geeky Hacks and get it fixed the right away. It'll definitely be worth it! -

Send it to Sony.
My 80 gb backwards compatible PS3 got the YLOD in Sepember. I was angry that I was going to have to send it to Sony and wait several weeks for it to be repaired so I started to looking at other options. I was skeptical to use an independent repair service, but from the flawless reviews it was kind of hard to pass up Geeky Hacks. I decided to contact them. Geeky Hacks got me in right away and in a matter of hours I left with my PS3 working again.
First visit: 5 stars!
Not even two months later my PS3 starts to show symptoms of the YLOD again. It would turn on, but was consistently freezing every time I went to use it for something. I contacted Geeky Hacks again and I was told I could drop it off on the weekend, but it would take up to 1 week for the repairs to be done. 8 days later I left with my PS3 working again (no charge).
Here's why I'm encouraging everyone to stay away. When I dropped my PS3 off the second time I was told that the problem may be persistent. The first time it wasn't mentioned that this may be a recurring problem. I understood it to be a one time fix. However, on the last visit I was encouraged by Geeky Hacks to start looking for a replacement PS3 and backing up my data. That's not really standing behind your work in my opinion.
Had I just sent my PS3 to Sony and paid the $120, I would have had a new or certified repaired PS3 in a few weeks. It would have cost me a few dollars more, but it would have saved me some hassle. Now I feel like I wasted $70 at Geeky Hacks that I could have used towards an authorized repair or the slim 160 gb PS3 that I just bought last weekend.
The people at Geeky Hacks are really nice and I'd like to see a small family run business succeed, but I honestly feel like they've take on more than they can chew with these PS3 repairs. The long turn around time makes me wonder if they're taking on new customers or just fixing the same PS3s over and over again.
Lesson learned: Send it to Sony. -

This review is coming a bit late but better late than never! Mark and his wife Joanne (hope I'm spelling that right) are incredibly helpful and really nice about setting up appointments and getting the system fixed.
Both of them know how to handle the systems and mine came back in perfect condition working fine allowing me to transfer everything to my new PS3 after it yellow lighted.
I happened to go when Mark was feeling under the weather so I met Joanne instead and was surprised to see she was just as knowledgeable as Mark was said to be.
I think what I appreciated the most was that despite them having to go to day jobs and taking care of their kid, they still manage to fit appointments in between their daily lives. Worth every penny if you want to keep all your data on your PS3! -

I, like others, was plagued with the unfortunate yellow light of death for my ps3. I made an appointment and dropped it off the same day. The lady who I assume handles the business-y stuff told me that they wouldn't be able to get to it until the weekend. They had an awesome DIY shop set up in their garage and you can tell that the dude is legit.
I got called back earlier than expected and I picked up my machine the next day- but not without an appropriate system test. Everything worked out great and she even said that is for some reason the symptoms came back, they would rework my machine again.
A+ work. These guys saved me from spending too much on a replacement from Sony. -

Why send your ps3 to sony and lose all your saved data and wait 5 or more weeks to get a refurbished one??? When you can take to Geeky Hacks for $70 bucks, they give you a couple months warrenty, and you dont lose all your saved data. Joann and Mark make it happen and they fixed mine faster then they initially told me, they have a nice set up with no secrets or sketchy vibes joann shows you everything and explains how its done, they "re-flowed" my ps3 a year ago and unfortunately it happened again, although my warrenty was up they still gave me a deal. joann makes your appointment quick and easy, you dont even have to call just shoot her a text, i highly recommend everyone to take your Ps3 to geeky hacks!!! Thanks Joann and Mark

Awesome PS3 repair right here in the bay. I cringed at the thought of sending my busted PS3 to Sony for $160 (and not knowing how long their service would take.. WTF?)
Luckily I found GeekyHacks in SF. I called them up and setup a drop off time, the woman was very friendly and she said it would be a bit longer than the normal same day turn around. About 4 days. No problem.
Mark was able to complete the repair ahead of schedule and I really couldnt be happier with their service. I would HIGHLY recommend GeekyHacks to anyone in need of PS3 repair! -

If your in SF and you send your PS3 to SONY, you're either an idiot or someone who hasn't heard of Geeky Hacks.
Sending it to SONY:
$170
Loose your data and wait three-four weeks to get it back.
Taking it to Geeky Hacks:
$70
Save your data and wait 1.5-3hours to get it back.
Mark is very friendly and very reliable. I once played RDR free roam w/ him and his clan and our avatar and mount set up was identical lol. Mark is a kind soul and I hope his business does well.
THANK YOU SO MUCH MARK KRUEGER! -

What a lifesaver... I feel kind of silly saying this, but when my PS3 took a dump on me I was MORTIFIED. After all, I am a grown man!
But you know what? I am a product of the 80's and the Atari generation so I will be a gamer for life and the prospect of me losing all my game progress and my fall print for my .50 cal sniper rifle was flat-out sickening.
Enter Geeky Hacks. In under an hour my PS3 was up and running again, no lost data, no lost fall print, no Sean going postal. Mark is a great guy too. Do not send it in to Sony for repairs! Save yourself the time and money and make an appointment.
Perhaps most importantly, tell a friend or anyone who will listen! I almost sent it in to Sony because I had no idea this was something that could be done... And I still would have lost everything!
Thank you Geeky Hacks! -

Thanks for fixing my PS3!
I was playing COD the other night and my PS3 just turned off. I got the blinking red light and the YLOD. The system wouldn't spit out the disc either. I was so sad and dreaded the thought of having to send my PS3 to Sony for a refurbished system. Luckily, my boyfriend found Geeky Hacks and coincidentally we were going to be in the area for a party(We live near Sacramento), so we decided to drop it off before we went to the party. We got a call in about 2 hours as it's stated on here. When we picked it up, he let us try it out. The great part about it was that he let us try it before paying. He really has a great setup and who knew someone could have that in their home. lol. He was a really nice guy and I am really happy he got my PS3 fixed. Thanks again! =) -

My PS3 stopped reading all discs a couple days ago and after doing a little research I found that it was probably the blu-ray diode went bad. Apparently this is the second most common problem next to the yellow light of death.
I had a couple of options,
Send it back to Sony wait around 3 weeks and pay around $170 to get a refurbished PS3 in return and lose all my saves and data.
Buy a new ( inferior to the PS3 fat) PS3 slim for $300 and lose all my saves and data.
Have the part replaced and keep my PS3 and saves and data.
After some research I found Geeky Hacks ad on craigslist. I contacted Mark and was impressed with his quick reply and how knowledgeable he was on the subject. He was able to schedule an appointment the next day.
He was very professional and explained the entire process, he tested my PS3 and confirmed it was a bad blu-ray diode, opened up the PS3 cleaned all the dust out, removed and replaced the entire drive not just the bad part. Tested the PS3 and confirmed it worked w/ all types of discs. The entire process took less than 20 mins and for a fraction of the cost of what Sony would, and most importantly all my data was in tact.
I have read stories of some shady people who claim to repair game systems but return the system damaged, still broken, or with someone else's system. Mark has worked with electronics for over 20 years and his equipment and work shop shows. He's also and avid game and understands how important your system is and makes sure things are done correctly. -

So my PS3 gives out on me. I'm in the middle of enjoying a match of SSF4 and it just plain dies on me. I'm devastated but not as much as I should be.
This is now the 2nd time that my PS3 has died on me, the first time due to a disc read error and I was able to send it in and fixed or replaced I should say under warranty.
My first instinct was to call Sony and so I did and had it all set up and ready to seemingly be sent out for a total of $180 to have it fixed/shipped.
I mention it to a couple of friends that it broke on me yet again and one suggest Geeky Hacks. I'm very hesitant at first but check out the yelp page and see all of the glowing 5 star reviews and consider it. The price is right, the guy seems legit but I second guess myself.
I decide paying over $100 less and being able to keep my saves is worth the risk. I arrive when Mark asks me to and am greeted, he shows me his workshop explains the problem and tells me it'll be done in about 90 minutes.
It was done in about 70-80 minutes and I arrived back and we discussed it. He let me test it out just to make sure that it worked.
All I can say about Mark is that he's extremely nice, very professional, talented at what he does and I recommend him to anyone who has a problem with their PS3. I also mentioned that I stripped the screws on my hard drive bay and he said that he'd be able to help me with that too. The guy is a life saver as well as a money saver. -

My PS3 has been down for more than 3 weeks. I googled all the problems and even youtubed it and finally realized it was something I couldn't fix.
So I e-mailed and called Sony and you all know how that goes. At the end of it all it cost $175 with shipping and it takes a few weeks to get your refurbished one back. So I was between buying a new one or just sending it in. Then a friend mentioned craigslist.
I contacted one person and he called me and told me to meet him at a parking lot then he would call me back when it was ready. I am NO DUMMY! So I sent Mark a message and with in 30 minutes he called me. It took a week/half before I got to him but when I arrived at his place, I was comfortable.
I saw his shop in the garage and I knew then he was legit. He explained what happened and replaced my drive where the blu-ray diode was connected with a refurbished one and then he used his compressor to clean it. With in 30 minutes my PS3 was working.
I like the fact he explained what he was doing while I was watching him because I learned some new information. Every question I had, he was very informative.
Now I am back online playing and my son is happy as well!!
I told him I would stay in touch with him and recommend him to friends.
OH BTW he only charged me $100. $70 for the part and $30 for his labor! Instead of paying $175 with Sony.
Thanks Mark! -

"I've experienced the dreaded YLOD on my Playstation 3 on more than one occasion and I decided to look for an alternative. I did not want to send it off to Sony's Head Office and wait several weeks to get it back; not to mention the shipping costs. After reading several good reviews about Geeky Hacks I decided to try them out. Mark, the staff member who helped me, is very knowledgeable and friendly. I can safely say he is an expert and know his way around a PS3. I waited for a few minutes while he did a diagnosis on my machine and immediately told me what should be done. In less than 2 hours he was able to fix my PS3. Amazing! Imagine, I saved more than $100 if I had to send it to the manufacturer and it only took me two hours! At first I was worried that the warranty will be forfeited, but since Geeky Hacks is just a few blocks away that doesn't bother me at all. They really deserve a five star rating! For those PS3 owners who experienced the Yellow Light of Death, I highly recommend you go to Geeky Hacks for repairs.

Like any typical issue with any mechanical moving part, its gonna break, overheat, crash, etc. sooner or later. Well, that is just what happened to my PS3 two days ago of this posting. I got the YLOD after about 3 and a half years of playing it to its fullest. Mind you, this is the 1st generation PS3 so it is definitely out of warranty. So, after reading a couple of "quick fixes" and watching some YouTube videos, I realized that there was no other way to get this fixed rather than send it back to Sony and pay the ridiculous repair rate that they were charging. Then, I read that they would send me back a refurbished console and erase all of my data...I was like OH, HELL NO!!! There has to be someone that can fix this without erasing anything and can get me gaming that same day...
After searching on the Internet, I realized Craiglists maybe a great place to search for someone that has experienced in PS3 repairs. After searching through several ads, I came across Mark and Geeky Hacks. I called very early the next morning and was surprised someone picked up. Spoke with his friendly wife, told her my situation and she explained to me the process of how they would fix the issue and scheduled an appt to come in that same day (07/11/10). This was a plus off the bat.
After arriving at Geeky Hacks, Mark and his wife showed me around the workshop and then Mark took my PS3 and verified the problem of the typical YLOD. I also explained to him that I got a Red Dead Redemption stuck in the drive and he said that he would be able to get it out. He told me to come back in 1.5 hrs and he should be able to get it up and running. Fast forward to 1.5 hrs later...came back and Mark got it fixed and up and running and got the disc out. He told me to test it before paying (another +1 on service). While playing, Mark realized that the fan was running louder than normal and he, himself, was not satisfied and said that we wanted to take a look at it a little further before I go home. After about a half hour, he diagnosed the problem, fixed it, I tested, he tested it and everyone was happy.
There is nothing but great things I can say about the service and quality that Mark and Geeky Hacks provides. He answered all of my questions and he explained everything that he was doing while repairing my PS3. Mark makes sure that you go home satisfied and that your console is back to its working condition for your gaming pleasure. I, strongly recommend Geeky Hacks to anyone if your PS3 has any problems or has the YLOD. I'm very confident that Mark will be able to fix it and get it back to you that same day!
Thank you Mark for fixing my PS3 and I will definitely be recommending you to everyone that I know that comes across any PS3 issues! -

My launch model PS3 had the blinking red light problem a year ago. It was placed upright. I placed it horizontally and it worked for another year until a month ago. Since my PS3 has hardware backward compatibility so I don't want to send it to Sony and have it replaced by a slim PS3. I searched for a local shop that repairs PS3 and found Geeky Hacks. My PS3 was fixed before the Thanksgiving weekend. It has been running fine since then. I highly recommend giving them a shot if you need to fix your PS3!

Mark of Geeky Hacks is a true gentleman , running his shop out of his house he offers simple reliable service . I came to him with 2 60gb first gen ps3s , one had a ylod w/ broken disk track and the other was smashed up beyond belief , in afew hours he offered to fix my ylod and faulty blu ray for a fraction of the price if I was willing to give him the destroyed ps3 for salvage parts . I accepted . After all the work was done he showed me exactly what happened and gave me a 30 minute informative lesson on ps3s , everything from ylod causes and ps3 anatomy to teaching me how to swap out my hard drive , he went way beyond the little job I paid for and was such a great help my gf and I felt it only right we pay him a little extra. Thank you again Mark

Update. Mine died again just after 3 months and was told i passed 3 month warranty. i decided to take it apart myself and try to fix(i don't recommend). i'm not sure if Arctic Silver 5(i called geeky hacks, they recommended AS5) compound turns white after 3 months, but thats what color the compound was on mine after they repaired.. i applied some Arctic Silver 5(silver in color)&heated up the MoBo.. it's been working fine.. i know it's gonna YLOD again.. Cuz if a "pro" made it last 3 months, my back alley technique shouldn't last very long..AGAIN, i don't recommend fixing it yourself.. i had nothing to lose.. Sony dropped there price, but also give 3 month warranty..Sooooo, Geeky Hacks can fix your PS3, but for how long.. It's not a "cure all" or you would get more than 3 months warranty...

So after Like a week and a half of getting the YLOD I found Mark at Geeky Hacks.(cool guy) He's got what u need to be up and running in what he says an hour and a half. I dropped off at 1:10, he called me for pick up at 2:20. He showed me that it works, let me play MW2, and even asked if he can take a pic of my custom painted PS3. (he had it for an hour and could have done it without my knowledge) YLOD? Call Mark.

Though I'm just repeating what others have said at this point, why not pile on some more? Similar story, Ps3 went down.. I panicked.. came across Marks business. Short time later, it's working perfectly. Mark & Joayn are unbelievably nice, and got me taken care of in exactly the time quoted. This guy is brilliant, I think he knows more about the consoles than Sony technicians. I'm hanging on this business card for as long as I own a playstation.

Awesome service. I called him up and he pretty much diagnosed my problem over the phone...it was the diode for the Blu Ray that had gone out. He said that it's a fairly common problem and that he could fix it easily.
We set up an appointment for a few days later and when I arrived, Mark was as friendly as could be. He set my console up on a workbench and expertly opened it up and removed the old Blu Ray. After a quick cleaning of the dust inside the case, he had the new drive installed in about 15 minutes.
I was super impressed with his knowledge and expertise in fixing this problem. He talked me through everything that he was doing, tested the console in front of me to make sure it worked and even reset the system to the factory defaults. It's working great and now I have ANOTHER gaming console as well as a Blu Ray player.
$100 bucks including labor and parts. Sony had quoted me a minimum of $149 plus shipping...and I'd be responsible for a box!
I highly recommend Geeky Hacks! -

Sent email Saturday morning after my PS3 stopped reading any disks. I had an answer back in less than 10m, an appointment in 30m and a working PS3 that afternoon. All for $90.
Yes, I could have ordered that part and fixed in myself but this way I didn't have to wait for UPS and the time I would have spent tearing the machine apart I got to spend with my family instead. Don't get no better than this... -

Kinda late but better late than never.
My son's PS3's blu ray drive died. They replaced it while I waited. This was back in June 2010 and the PS3 has been solid, ever since.

Replaced PS3 laser as the PS3 was not recognizing any disk. Very helpful and responsive.
