I haven't been to the stall at the old farmer's market yet, but I definitely see a trip in my near future. I attended an Academy Awards watching party at the Khyber a couple months ago where there was a Gateaux Rose cupcake booth. First off, the cupcakes were gorgeous. I had the perfect chocolate cupcake topped with honey-infused boiled icing which was piped on the cupcake in the shape of a rose. The ratio of cake to icing was just right, the cake was moist, fresh, tasty and decadent without being rich, and the icing had just the right level of sweetness and flavour. Simple, old-fashioned goodness with just a hint of a fresh and modern twist.
The James Franco cupcake topper sure didn't take away from the tasty quotient, either.
Despite my love of cakes, cupcakes, etc, I rarely enjoy paying $3 for one cupcake. However, Gateaux Rose is an exception to the rule. In fact, after eating my cupcake I mentioned to my friend that I was going to buy another one as a treat for my lunch at work the next day. She nodded and smiled knowingly, and I proceeded to buy the second cupcake, returned to my seat, and ate it within 5 minutes. I think I showed respectable restraint for those 5 minutes, don't you?
In addition to the blog, they have an Etsy shop where they sell the loveliest fondant cupcake toppers (really sweet birds), however they are quite pricey. http://www.etsy.com/sh...Listed in: Caketonite

Gateaux Rose makes the best cupcakes in Halifax. They're made with imagination and a lot of love. Try walking by their Brewery Market stall and turning down one their perfect, pretty desserts. It's near impossible.
They made me a batch of cupcakes that really stole the show at my family's Christmas dinner. Turkey? Great. Veggies? Tasty. But then I produced a tray of cupcakes FILLED WITH SALTED CARAMEL and topped with a citrus mousse. Holy Cats!
Gateaux Rose is also different because the ladies who make the goodies are NSCAD grads. Their cupcakes look as good as they taste, with intricate designs and wee marzipan accessories.
Basically, I'm in love with these cupcakes and want to marry them and have a life-long, fulfilling relationship. We'd be so happy together! -

Gateaux Rose, I want to give you 5 stars yo, you're everything I like in a consumable product: local, up and coming, and you make cupcakes!
So, here's the deal with Gateaux Rose as far as I can gather: They are a new bakery in Halifax currently operating without a shop front HOWEVER they have a kick ass website where you can see all sorts of details pertaining to their own unique cake menu (past work), pricing and my favorite: recipes!
Having stumbled upon the Gateaux Rose website a couple days ago (and with a trip to see the extended familia in my very close future) I decided to venture a go at one of their recipes, and more specifically: Thanksgiving browned butter sweet potato cupcakes with whipped cream cloud frosting. Bitting off more than I can chew you say? You might be right...
Gateaux Rose, I could have really used a 'yield' amount. ie- this recipe will make so many friggin cupcakes that you will run out of little 'cake tins to cook them in and will be flogging cupcakes at random strangers in the hopes of keeping your weight to within 10 lbs of whatever you weighed p.c.e. (pre-cupcake endeavor) Really... i'm headed to see family and this is still an obscene number of cupcakes to have around even dispersed amongst a group.
Come to think of it, there's one more detail that would have been really relevant: a bake temperature and bake time? Assume this detail didn't quite make it onto the website but that's ok becccaauuuseee...
THESE CUPCAKES ARE AMAZING!!! My icing didn't turn out as pretty as yours G.R. folk but I appreciated your little tips about how to tell when my sugar was done cookin' and such: 'it'll look like a gummy ball at the bottom of a cup of water' was surprisingly accurate.
Gateaux Rose does all sorts of speciality orders whether it be a birthday, baby shower or any other celebration this is definitely the new spot in town to try out! The thing I liked a lot about the orders pictured on the website was that they were all unique and individual and seemed to have been created with a specific person in mind. ie- no stock 'this is how we do a wedding cake' sorta stuff. The folks at G.R. can also be found some Saturday's (check their website) at the Brewery Market!
I really love your online recipes too G.R. but a simplified version of some things would be useful for those of us that don't tend to have: cream of tartar and honeyed dates hanging around.
Great cupcakes! Can't wait to try a market morsel of your own baking! -
Review from Sue A.
I had my first Gateaux Rose cupcake Saturday and instantly became a fan. I was killing time at the old Farmers Market at the Brewery Market when, to my surprise, I saw a table with beautifully decorated cupcakes labelled Gateaux Rose. I had been waiting to get my hands on one since I had seen these cupcakes on the internet. Operated by two former NSCAD students, Gateaux Rose is a relative newcomer to the local cupcake scene in Halifax.
My husband and I each devoured a Triple Chocolate cupcake (chocolate buttermilk cupcakes filled with rich whipped chocolate ganache and topped with soft chocolate mousseline butter cream topped with a cute handmade fondant pumpkin) while my older daughter swooned over a Strawberry Delight (pale pink frosting atop a light chocolate cake). My younger daughter had a gourmet version of an Oreo--a swell looking chocolate sandwich cookie.
The cake part was divine--nice and light with a chocolate center. The frosting was incredible, full of unsalted butter taste that melts in your mouth. The cupcakes were slightly smaller than those from a well known competitor, but with so much flavour, the size seemed perfect. At $3/each, these edible lovelies are competitively priced and worth every penny.
The only thing I minded was that the cupcakes were baked in cupcake papers. Normally this bothers me, but in this case, the paper served to catch the quickly falling crumbs.
In a quick chat with one of the two adorably dressed bakers, she told me she used to teach Wilton cake decorating classes. She learned a lot about undesirable ingredients, mainly shortening, used to create cupcakes and frosting that appear beautiful but taste less than delicious. Consequently, GR embraces the use of natural ingredients such as unsalted butter and buttermilk to achieve a tastier end result.
In a display of community, the two bakers also share their recipes on the internet so you can try recreating their heavenly products at home.
The two hope to be at the old Market every Saturday. I know I plan on seeing them every Saturday!
