Garrison's was the ONLY place I would trust to cut my hair before my wedding.  As much as I hate to see myself in pictures, I have to say at least my hair looked great.

The folks at Garrison's are fun, attentive and focused on getting the job done while not making the experience suck.  Like Luis A.  My barber retired and left me high and dry.  I am so thankful to the folks at Garrison's were there for me.

Shout out to the guys at Garrison's!

Strolled in after reading a review on BlogTO. The atmosphere/beer while you're there piqued my interest.

The space was great - very relaxed. Cool dudes working there. Chatted about music the whole time. Felt like I was hanging out with some friends.

Haircut was very good - I think I'll switch from John Steinberg because it was about 40% less expensive, faster, it's all cool dudes (as mentioned above), and there's the beer.

$35 for a cut, 25$ for a shave (or $50 for both - I didn't get the shave because I was short on time...but it sounds better than first imagined - almost....spa like). Only a dude from the UK is involved instead of a tiny Asian woman. Still. Next time.

    I'll be back.

    edit:
They do long hair, too. Don't be fooled by 'barber shop' stigma.

It's not often I get my hair cut on a Monday. Not ever to be honest. That's why when I picked up the phone to make an appointment at Garrison's, I knew magic was about to happen. A barbershop that is open seven days a week? They must be insane.

I was right. Though Garrison's and White Squirrel (the coffeeshop, not the elusive downtown rodent) are neighbours on Queen West, Garrison's subtle black door presents you with rising stairs. The delightful voice that took my appointment was nowhere to be found but Alan was waiting for me on the couch. Alan takes to you like you've known him for eleven years. Our conversation was extremely inappropriate -- just the way I like it. If he wasn't a genius with the scissors, I might have been offended, but this was a great cut. (If I do say so myself.)

Then came the shave. For $50 I got the shave and a hair cut that clocks in at just over an hour. Spa-like is one way to describe the experience, but I prefer to use "heaven." A gentle lather is applied to the face, followed by a scalding hot towel. And I mean your entire face. I closed my eyes just in time and kept them that way the whole time. Then more lather, then a shave. Another lather, another shave. A hot towel. Lotion. And an ice cold towel to close the pores.

You'll feel so relaxed you might want to stick around a while. But then I would remind you that other people would like to get their haircut too so GTFO. Don't come here too often, or I will harm you.

    Walk-ins welcome.

Obligatory Title Pun: Securing a STRONGHOLD on my beauty needs.

Menu Readability: Their website has an animated favicon. How'd they do that?

Need to mention: They give you free ____ here.

What this place teaches me about myself: I need to start my week with a shave and a haircut. Always.

I am a little nervous about giving this place 5 stars as it might make it harder for me to get in for a haircut.

For 20 years I was in Aurora and had the same barber/stylist.. She was great. Since moving back to Toronto in 2001 I have had a dozen.

    That has changed now.

Al was my barber today and it was fun. It was hot so he got me something to drink and then started with the cut. He took his time too. No in and out style of haircutting. Just a nice time of having a haircut in an old fashioned barber chair and having a conversation.

Most important was the cut was excellent. My wife Teena agrees.

Yep, looks like I have finally found a place in Toronto to get my hair cut!

One of the worst haircuts i've had in recent memory, and also one of the most expensive!  It took about 3 weeks before it started looking decent.  For $45 I expect more.

If your goal is to be in the heart of Queen West hipsterdom when having your hair cut, by all means go to this place and drink a beer and take in the scene.  If you're more interested in getting a good haircut at a decent price, go somewhere else.

To top it off, the guy who cut my hair was not gentle, often poked me with the scissors and pulled my hair when using the razor.

When my barber of 20 years retired, I've been lost in the world of continuos bad hair-cuts, until I met Alan at Garrison's.  The shop is retro-cool and right away I was welcomed with a warm hello and something to drink.

I was taken back to happier times once a sat in the big plush leather barber's chair. Alan took his time and paid great attention to my haircut, I will definitely go back.

Met Sydney and Allan and they were able to take me right away. Sydney took the time to find out what I wanted. And I got a very attentive, unrushed, cut.

I also opted for a beard trim and shave. *That* was great. I haven't had a hairdresser who paid attention to my beard or go-t for a long time (Eric @ Donato's to be exact--where did you go dude!).

And Sydney was really a pro with the straight razor. If you haven't had shave with a straight razor it's worth the try. It's the closest you'll come to a spa day as a man without feeling, mmm, effeminate ;-)

I don't think I would call the place retro... it's just Queen W. Like getting your hair cut at Czehoski or something.

Anyway, without even mentioning the über-reasonable prices, it was great.

Best cut I've had in years. Typically I wouldn't go to a Barber as I don't want my head shaved, but it isn't that kind of Barber, it is a modern barbershop. Cool music, beer, rustic and welcoming. Great people and inexpensive at $35.00 for a great cut.

Great hair cut in a relaxed environment.  The option of having a beer is great.   Had the shave as well - first time without razor burn from a straight blade shave.
