Review from Steve S.
As restaurants go Garrick's Head won't be winning any beauty contests. It is a dive, dive, dive...
BUT!!!!
It's dill battered fish and chips with crusty fries are worth all the I feel dirty, need to wash my hands constantly, perhaps take a full body shower now that I have just sat down here feelings that this place can bring out.
Big TVs showing sports shine from the walls and you can mistake the TV watching of the cook as some serious stalker like staring if you are seated at the right (or wrong) table...
So stop in, bring sanitizer, sit away from a TV, eat the wonderful fish and chips and don't say I didn't tell you so! -

Much like any pub you have ever visited. Friendly staff and decent beer selection. Several TVs on different channels. Felt more like a locals' establishment, and not as corporate/touristy like Irish Times and Bard and Banker.
The place has definitely seem better days, and for those old enough to remember when the odometer in a car "turned over" at 99,999 miles . . . . the odometer has turned over on this place. Probably time for a little freshening up.
A twist . . . . a real fireplace.
Worth a visit and beer if you are in the vicinity of Bastion Square. -

Est 1867 - this bar has Character. I've been coming here for over ten years & many more to come, no doubt. Pub fare is elevated to a higher standard while retaining affordability & great flavours. Great burgers! Personable & attentive staff. Juke box always has the place rockin. Sitting next to the wood fire place is pretty darned cozy in the winter, then the people watching from the patio in the summer is too entertaining.

Good location. A nice stop to make when bar hopping. Wednesdays they have a special of a burger and a pint of beer for $12.

On a beautiful day in Victoria, new to the land, I found this gem for lunch. The special was very filling. It consisted of a burger, half order of fries, and half salad, with a pint o beer. All for 12.50. BOOM. Sold. The waitress and bar guy were very nice and I had great conversations with both. I sat out on the patio and people watched as I ate. This place gets it.

I liked this place a lot. Just about the only 'normal' pub/restaurant I found in Victoria. The service here was great, the food was very good, the portions were huge, and they have a very good beer selection. All for about the most reasonable prices I found in Victoria.
Why only three stars, then? Because their yam fries, while tasty, turned my stomach in knots for the next 24 hours. If I hadn't indulged in the fires, I think this place would easily get four stars. -

To be a true fan of the Garrick's Head, it helps to spell it correctly and so that is where I am left...a true fan. I have been a regular and an irregular of the Garrick's Head since I moved to Victoria many years ago. There's a reason it's still around amongst those other three "updated" places that opened in recent years. Sure one could say it's their overflow, but I prefer to think it's the dependability. The Garrick's Head has made very few changes, including the decor. Where they lack in fancy light fixtures they make up for in the bar staff. They always have a fun charm and actually welcome you. They come around often and seldom let a pint sit empty at your table. This is what I like. The stuffy places can keep their high maintenance girls, I'll take a pint of cider in less than two minutes anytime.
The food is where the last star went. Frankly, a pub is not where I seek fine dining so I know exactly what I'm getting. But where the Garrick's fails is they've been trying too hard lately, but I've long since forgiven them, and so should everyone else. There's a lot of pressure across the square and I can't blame the owners for trying.
My whole point is, if you just want to sit and enjoy a pint, maybe catch part of the game and just catch up with a book or an old friend the Garrick's Head is the perfect place. -

Always full at dinner time in the Summer, so try to get there early, especially if there's a game on. The last time I went to the Garrich's Head, I had the beef dip sandwich. It was HUGE and very tasty. Friendly, attentive staff make the general feeling in the Garrich's Head a good one. The menu is typical pub fare, the beer list carries local brewery's, and the outdoor patio is an excellent place to sit and chat on a hot Summer night.

We went during the day when the crowds were light...actually non-existent. While you would never guess it, had the most delicious hummus plate for lunch. Really, really good. Paired it with a nice beer I don't recall (they don't carry Lighthouse Lager for some reason). Left very happy. I remember the waiter being a cutey. But boys in Canada usually are :)

Loved this place. Food and drinks were great. Shots generous. Helpful staff that were super friendly and more than happy to give suggestions about their wonderful city and other businesses. We had to stop in this watering hole a few times each day. Just to take the edge off! One of my favs in Victoria.
