Have been going here for several years now.  Usually I only go here for the baked goods (they have good dan tat's (aka. chinese egg tarts at $1.10), coconut buns (3 for $1.80), my friend got pineapple buns but they have everything - cha siu bau, etc.).

Went today for lunch and the place was packed with people!  Menu is pretty funny - they have a "special" for basically every time of the day. Anyways, service is fast and efficient.  Waitress is very nice and you get free tea.

We ordered green onion cakes ($4.25) which were nice and fluffy.  Typical chinese onion cakes and came with a hot sauce that gave it a little kick.  My friend ordered the noodle soup with BBQ duck ($7.25 I think) and I ordered the noodle soup with shredded cabbage and BBQ duck ($7.25 medium size).  Mine came with a ton of different vegetables (bean sprouts, snow peas, chinese choy/cabbage, etc.) which I liked as it seems you can't get enough veggies when you go to a chinese restaurant.  Bowl was pretty filling.  I finished it but my friend only ate about half of hers so she took the rest home.  Those bowls are definitely deceiving - after eating half, it looks you barely made a dent!

Total price of the bill was $20 before taxes = ridiculously good price. Cheap and good tasting food is always a win in my book.

Ah, Garden Bakery. You're my go-to if I want Asian-style baked goods, like taro or coconut buns, and you have the best little custard fruit tarts! I wish I go there when things are more freshly baked, because there's nothing like sesame seed balls filled with red bean when they're hot and fresh, and perfectly gooey. Still, you fill the hole in my heart when I want cheap and tasty baked goods. No frou frou fanciness here, just taste.

I normally don't sit at the restaurant, as Double Greetings is my greasy Chinese go-to place, but once in a while, I've eaten here and haven't been disappointed. You're also one of the few places that sells deep fried pig intestines -- gross for some, yum for me! My widening belly can attest to that!

It's too bad you're in a slightly sketchy part of town. It's not your fault that a homeless shelter is half a block away. I just hope that the upcoming gentrification due to condo developers, Epcor tower, and possible arena won't push you out due to rent, and rather elevate your business so that people don't judge you for your slightly shady outside, so they can have a chance at your egg tarts and more.

What do you do when you're driving downtown at 1 AM with an empty stomach?

Head to the Garden Bakery! It's a good late night dinner place and they have pretty cheap food. I went with four other friends of mine and we shared 4 dishes for about $36 bucks.
It gets pretty busy on the weekends between 2-3 am because that's when the club-goers come here.

I haven't tried everything, but the peaches&shrimp and beef chow fun were really good. I didn't really like the taste of the yung chow (shrimp/BBQ pork) fried rice, but I didn't mind the chicken fried rice.

Anyways, Garden Bakery is sketchy looking, but the foods not bad if you don't mind the extra oil Chinese food has.

I've been going to them for years. Mostly in the evenings after work or just to meet up with family and the staff there is always really friendly and very accomodating.

If you're a regular they even give you a complimentary soup and the food comes out literally 5-8 minutes after you ordered. They're fast, friendly, cheap and very very good~ I highly reccommend it.

Although at night it can be sometimes skeptical because of the location but even checking it out during the day they also have a lower section with selections of baked goods that's cheap for lunch as well!

Cheap, late night eats with very very efficient service. In the 7 years I lived in Edmonton, I eat here at least once a week. And now when the hubs & I visit, we always stop by Garden Bakery.

They have good beef chow fun, fish maw soup (very good), black bean spare ribs, salted fish chicken fried rice!!!

The bakery makes good fruit cocktail cakes and chinese baked goods. Their mini fruit tarts are great for potlucks n parties!

    One Word, DIARRHEA !!!!!
came here late at night and its your typically cantonese cafe food with like chow mein, fried rice and noodle soup....ordered the baked seafood rice, fried tofu and shimp roll (which is absolutely terrible). Typically lousy service from a chinese restaurant. The only good i can say is the hk coffee

    Never coming back here again!!!

The night time crew is amazing!! We go there all the time now, and the servers are so friendly!! I love it here. The service is fast, the food is delicious, and the price is cheap! It really can't get any better than this. Oh wait, it can! They close really late! Went there at 2am one time and they are still open for business.

This review is strictly for the dining experience after 5pm. The morning crew surprisingly are not very nice compared to the night time crew. But if you work downtown and need a quick bite, I would still recommend Garden Bakery as top pick!

You guys are awesome!!! Keep it up!

My friends suggested coming to the Garden Bakery for a bite to eat after some clubbing, and I reluctantly agreed. I'm always a bit hesitant to go out to restaurants extremely late at night, cause you always hear about gang shootings and stuff at, well, restaurants extremely late at night! And I hate to play into stereotypes, but I think this is a valid concern! Anyway, there was nothing to worry about that night.

They serve a mix of Chinese and Vietnamese food here. I wasn't too hungry so I just ordered the spring rolls. They were alright, a bit too greasy though, even if spring rolls are usually greasy anyway. We were able to find a large table for the eight of us, which is always nice, and service was really quick. The lights were pretty bright there, and the decor is kind of tacky and lacking overall, but somehow it doesn't really seem to matter. I think people are just happy there's places like this where they can have a hot meal at late hours.

The Garden Bakery is a treat. The upstairs restaurant might look a bit like a cafeteria--the lights are very bright in there--but I don't think this place is trying to go for a romantic ambiance. They served me water is a pink plastic cup--it brought me back to my kindergarten days. Still, the cup was functional and cute, so there's nothing wrong with that.

The food was really good, and the servings were plentiful. I had the usually Szechuan-type food, like ginger beef, spring rolls, wonton soup--it was all very tasty, and the prices were definitely reasonable.

But the Garden Bakery experience isn't over once dinner is finished. After dinner, I headed downstairs, where there is an attached bakery. There are so many yummy treats like cakes, cookies, biscuits--they all make the perfect dessert.

Garden Bakery is a huge Asian bakery in Chinatown. The large main area features a variety of buns, cookies, cakes, and other treats, many of which are uniquely Asian items like buns stuffed with taro root, or cakes made with various kinds of beans. Customers take a pair of tongs and a tray and pick out what they want, then pay for everything at the front. There is also a restaurant upstairs serving a variety of Chinese foods.

I mostly come here for the bakery, however. I end up leaving with a decent selection of treats for well under ten dollars.

I have heard the restaurant has new owners.  Food more consistently good and servings are larger at a reasonable price.  Very fast service.
